Forbes Phoenix

Our Bloke -Jarrod Amery

May 24, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve been living in the area for 13 years and bought a farm on the New Grenfell Road two years ago where we now live. I like the people, climate, agricultural landscape and close proximity to services.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work on my own farm and leased farm land. I love being a farmer. I love the challenges associated with running a profitable business.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I really enjoy shooting rats in the sheds at night with the kids, cooking a barbeque, motorbike riding in challenging terrain (Great Dividing Range) and going camping with the family.

What are you really good at? I’m not sure if I’d call myself as “really good at”, but you generally become good at what you love and I love my wife and kids and being a role model to them.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Bring injustice in our world to its knees – poverty, abuse, sex trafficking, slavery, hunger, war, violence – to see people freed from these bondages.

What is your pet hate? The lack of respect of others.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. When I took my family on a camping trip to Broken Hill, Tibooburra and Innamincka to Cameron’s Corner.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I grew up and went to school in Forbes but after marrying a farmer 25 years ago, I’ve had to commute to work in Forbes or stay home.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? ChapterTwo. I enjoy meeting new people and making them feel good about themselves.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I drive home trying to avoid the roo’s. I love having my family around or catching up with friends.

What are you really good at? I’m really good at cramming every last minute as I never have enough time, which always makes me late. I am also good at not being able to switch off… or is that a bad thing?

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would want to be able to control the rain when needed!

What is your pet hate? Dealing with Telstra. I’m no good at puzzles. Oh, and I am OCD about the interior of the car being clean.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Being young and in Year 6 and going on a school excursion, discovering Sydney. I thought it was just the best thing ever.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

May 17, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

George Barnes: My favourite childhood memory is summer days and no school.

Christene Gorton: Going for drives with my mother and father and also my grandparents on Sundays in Sydney.

John Ryan: A childhood memory I certainly cannot forget was when I fell off a horse!

Who is your favourite sportsperson and why?

May 10, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Lilli Cronin: Hurdles athlete, Sally Pearson. I like how fast she runs and her style of jumping.

Poppy Constable: Usain Bolt because he’s really good at what he does and he is caring and kind.

Hannah Cudaj: Susan Pettitt because she pushed through difficulties within netball of being cut from the Australian team and worked hard to eventually make her way back into the team.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes for 30 years. It’s a friendly town in beautiful surroundings. I’ve found it a great place to bring up a family and a good place to do business. I find tonnes of stuff to do, so never a dull moment unless I want one.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I currently work at News On Rankin. They are a great and happy bunch of people, all working towards positive outcomes that make it a pleasant workplace. I enjoy getting around town delivering newspapers and receiving smiles and waves.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like to read books, play Internet games, visit friends and my folks and go to church. I also enjoy mountain climbing with my son. I love cooking, playing guitar, song writing, storytelling and volunteering on the local radio.

What are you really good at? Talking! If you could have a super power, what would it be? A super sense of humour. I like to see people laughing and happy.

What is your pet hate? Definitely flies!

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Mushandike, which was a school excursion when I was 12. A family trip to Zimbabwe with sight-seeing of Victoria Falls, Kariba Dam and the Inyangas. Lake McDougal in the Tribal Trust Lands – getting bogged in quicksand, boating across the lake, watching the hippos at play and listening to the night sounds of the African bush.

Why is Anzac Day so significant to you?

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Jemma McLennan: It is important because of all the people who fought for our country and who are still fighting.

Hugh Mackay: To remember the soldiers who died in the war for us so that we could have a good life today.

Shirley Taylor: My father was in the war and he went through terrible things afterwards

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have been in Forbes for just over seven years now. I like the country lifestyle… I never thought I’d be a “farm girl” but I actually enjoy it.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work for Council and operate out of the Visitor Information Centre. I really like meeting visitors and residents alike and hearing some of their incredible stories of travel or the history of our town.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I love to dance. I dance two to three nights a week doing ballroom and modern and have recently taken up women’s soccer. I’m not sure that soccer helps me to unwind though.

What are you really good at? I can sing pretty well. I think I am pretty good at my dancing too.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would probably have to go with flying or teleporting. This way I could visit my family and friends scattered all over the country and overseas and see the world in a flash… and save a few dollars too!

What is your pet hate? Spelling errors, not being listened to and people dragging their heels when they walk.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Travelling overseas with my sister to Italy (Rome, Naples and Florence), also France (Paris and surrounds) and then on to New York and Nashville solo.

What would you like to be when you grow up?

April 26, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The little ones from Goodstart  Early Learning answered.

James Gamble: A firefighter, because my mummy goes to the fire station.

Ash Sinclair: A racecar driver, so I can go super fast!

Annabella Scott: A mummy. I just like being a mummy.

Max Hogben: A builder just like dad.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes all my life except for 18 months. I like living in Forbes because of the friendly people and relaxed lifestyle.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have been a Learning Support Officer at Parkes Christian School for two years and a tennis coach for more than 30 years. I like helping students reach their full potential.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? In my spare time I like to restore old furniture, play tennis and catch up with friends.

What are you really good at? I think I’m a pretty good dad.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? If I could have a super power, it would be the ability to have super human endurance.

What is your pet hate? I don’t have one. Tell us about your best holiday ever. All my holidays have been great but the one to Europe was special… it was when I proposed to my wife.

Would you rather visit the past or the future?

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Jessica Byrnes: I would like to visit the past. It would be interesting to see other eras and people from the past and witness their different experiences.

Mel Judd: The future. It would be nice to see how wealthy I’m going to be or where I’ll be living.

Taylor Bliss: The past. To see how life was simpler and safer then. Specifically Forbes because everyone says they had such a great time.
