MAYORAL NOTES

September 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

What great weather we had for the Forbes Show on the weekend. Council’s stand at the show was awarded the Best Commercial Display – Outside for the third year. I thank all Councillors who came along over the two days as well as the staff who were involved.

Acting General Manager Max Kershaw and I attended the Elvis Festival media launch in Parkes on Monday. The festival program looks bigger and better than ever. We are very lucky to have Max acting as our General Manager until a new General Manager is recruited. Max is very experienced and we welcome him back to Forbes for this period.

Council has very carefully considered the future of its rural landfills and from Monday, 6 November changed operating hours and closures will come into effect. These changes include Bedgerabong and Garema landfills open limited hours and staffed while open, Ootha will be controlled via an agreed access system with residents and Wirrinya and Warroo landfills will be mothballed. Let ters will be mailed out to all residents who will be effected by these changes.

This weekend is another busy one with the Boscars Forbes Business Awards on tonight and tomorrow night the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show presentation dinner. Maureen and I are looking forward to attending these great events.

I would like to wish the Forbes Platypi first grade team all the best in the grand final tomorrow in Orange. It’s been a great year for the Platypi and I hope they bring home the trophy.

COUNCIL COMMENTS

Max Kershaw has returned as Acting General Manager after the departure of Danny Green. It’s fantastic to have Max on board as he has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and has a long history with Forbes through his family. Max will be in the position until a permanent replacement can be found. I’d also like to wish Danny all the best in his new endeavours. I appreciated his support as a new Councillor.

The NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show took place last week. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the public tasting as my brother’s 50th was on the same night but I hear it was a very successful event. I am looking forward to the presentation dinner because last year was absolutely brilliant and I’d encourage everyone to support the event on Saturday, 16th September. Tickets are available from BWR Accountants.

I am also looking forward to the Forbes Show which gets underway today. I’ve been supporting and attending the Forbes Show for many years and it always brings back fond memories of family, food and fun.

The show displays the best produce, stock, craft, photography and art our community can produce. Cool conditions are predicted but I’d encourage everyone to come down or at least a few hours.

New Acting General Manager

Max Kershaw has returned as Forbes Shire Council’s Acting General Manager after the departure of former General Manager Danny Green. He will serve in the position until a permanent replacement can be found.

Max has more than 42 years’ experience in local government of which he worked 21 years as a general manager. He mostly worked at rural councils of similar size and scale including Gunnedah, Warren, Narrabri and Harden. Max said his priorities during his short tenure would be stability and the maintenance of high quality services to the Forbes community.

Forbes Shire Council will embark on an extensive recruitment process over the coming weeks and months.

MAYORAL NOTES

August 31, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

I attended NAIDOC celebrations last Thursday when about 900 school children celebrated indigenous culture.

I also had the privilege of presenting the Forbes Senior and Forbes Junior Indigenous Person of the Year Awards respectively to Cath Bowden for her work to promote Wiradjuri culture and Matty Duke for his academic and sporting achievements.

This week also saw another great Forbes event when the NSW Small Winemakers Show got underway. The show fills a niche for small winemakers to showcase their product against their larger counterparts. Tonight the public tasting takes place at the Youth and Community Centre from 6:30pm. I’d encourage as many residents as possible to support the event and sample top wines from across NSW and the ACT.

Last weekend the Forbes Shire’s sporting talent was on display. I attended the Platypi vs Dubbo Roos game and it was great to see our boys overcome Dubbo. In not so good news the Forbes Magpies were unsuccessful in their clash with Parkes. Con gratulations to the Platypi and commiserations to the Magpies.

I also attended the junior soccer and junior netball grand finals. The manners of the children were truly a credit to the clubs and their families. The other thing that occurred to me while attending these events was how lucky we are to have such top quality sporting facilities in Forbes. They are a credit to our community and to our parks and gardens staff.

MAYORAL NOTES

Last Friday I was able to attend Vietnam Veterans Day at the Cenotaph while the park was full of children for Reading Down Town Day. I was impressed with the respect the children showed the veterans.

On Saturday Cr Webb, Cr Herbert and I attended the Bedgerabong Show. It was great to get out and give residents the opportunity for a chat and feedback.

I’d like to thank Cr Miller for representing Council and presenting at the Sand and Grass Greens golf tournament. The event was very successful and looks likely to continue to grow.

On Sunday Maureen and I attended the Orange Male Voice Choir performance. The choir were again magnificent, but I’d also like to congratulate the young dancers from Kristen’s Dance Studio, who were simply fantastic.

Our current General Manager, Danny Green, will depart this time next week. Acting General Manager, Max Kershaw, will begin the same day so we can ensure continuity of service. We’re looking forward to working with Max and continuing the good work Danny started during his time with us.

On Tuesday, Matt Clifton was in town to meet with stakeholders and discuss Vanfest. At this time of year ticket sales normally haven’t started, but in excess of 6,000

have already been sold.

There are still some tickets left for Grazing Down the Lachlan. This has all the makings of an extremely successful Forbes event and I encourage everyone to purchase their tickets at www.grazingdownthelachlan.com

MAYORAL NOTES

August 17, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The General Manager and I attended the Centroc quarterly meeting in Canberra last week. It was a worthwhile and productive meeting in which we discussed issues of importance for the Forbes Shire and wider community.

Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health, Ken Wyatt, was one of the speakers. I asked about the issue of increasing respite care and he agreed it is something the Federal Government needs to examine. I also asked about the recognition and remuneration of the wonderful people working in aged care, and Mr Wyatt told us to expect news on this matter very soon.

The Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport talked about the upgrade of the Pacific Highway, which is expected to be complete by 2020. Other highways will then be considered. We will lobby strenuously to ensure that flood-proofing the Newell Highway is high on the government’s priority list.

The Minister for Regional Development discussed the significant amount of money in the funding pipeline. Rest assured Forbes Shire Council will be working hard to have some shovel-ready projects prepared to take advantage of this funding.

Vanfest’s Matt Clifton tells me that around 6000 day tickets have now been sold. This is great news for Forbes as the thousands

of visitors will provide an enormous boost to our local economy.

Finally, the Orange Male Voice Choir will perform at Town Hall from 2pm on Sunday. It’s one performance not to be missed.

MAYORAL NOTES

August 10, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

This week we received news that Council’s General Manager, Danny Green, has resigned and will leave Forbes Shire Council. Danny has served us very well and under his leadership we have put in place a number of initiatives and projects that will serve the Forbes Shire Council well into the future. Danny has taken the difficult decision for family reasons and while disappointed Council accepts and understands his position. We wish Danny and his family all the best.

I’ve just returned from the Australian Livestock Marketing Association Annual Conference where we heard a number of ways to better operate and market the Central West Livestock Exchange.

We inspected the Gracemere Saleyards, which are leased by Ripleys from Rockhampton Shire Council, and were impressed by what we saw. At the conference, I stood aside from my position on the board. Cr Jenny Webb was successful in gaining a position, and will serve on the board for the next 12 months.

Vanfest is shaping up as one of the best ever. It’s early days but ticket sales are well above expectations, which is great news. More sold tickets increases the economic benefits Vanfest will bring to Forbes.

Council has heard a number of people express concerns about the state of the saleyards. The saleyards are dry-cleaned with a bobcat. Due to recent rains the clean could not take place. Rest assured we strive to present this facility in the best possible condition.

Council Comments

August 3, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

As you know Forbes Shire Council recently ensured that the Vanfest music festival will continue to be a key attraction for Forbes. This year it will run over December 1 and 2. This is a massive win for Forbes and we need the community’s support in welcoming all visitors to our beautiful town.

Vanfest may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we can’t deny the benefits to Forbes. Up to 7000 people attend the event each year, delivering an enormous economic injection to our Shire.

This year’s massive Vanfest line-up includes the likes of Amy Shark, Tash Sultana, Thundamentals and Dune Rats. I haven’t heard of any of these bands but young people from across the state have, and tickets sales have already exceeded any previous Vanfest.

This week is Local Government Week and on Monday we had visits from a number of groups interested in learning more about local government. Learning Ladder in particular discussed some important matters and passed a resolution to have ice cream for afternoon tea.

The motion was carried unanimously. Planning for Australia Day is about to kick off and Council will soon call for nominations from community members who want to help. It would be great to see as many community members as possible get in and help make the 2018 Australia Day celebrations bigger and better than ever.

Mayoral Notes…

July 27, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

We arrived in Rockhampton for the Australian Livestock Markets Association annual conference and annual general meeting on Tuesday. At the time of writing this on Wednesday, the conference was in full swing. The speakers have been excellent so far and I will report more on this next week.

On Monday we announced that Council has secured the future of VANFEST through a leasing arrangement. This means great benefits for the community and is in line with the strategic regional development strategy of the NSW Government. Council’s ongoing support will ensure the music festival continues to boost our economy through the added resources Council can provide, allowing the event to naturally grow and prosper.

The CCTV security cameras at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre are now installed and recording. This should deter a lot of the vandalism that has been occurring down there in recent times. Next week is Local Government Week and we have a number of early childhood centres visiting during the week. This is a great opportunity for children to see at a young age where Council have their meetings and find out more about Local Government.

Don’t forget Council’s next Scrap Metal, Organics and Bulky Waste Clean-Up is commencing from August 7. Please put your rubbish out for collection on Sunday, August 6. For more information visit www.forbes.nsw.gov.au or call Netwaste Customer Service on 1300 725 415.

Have a great weekend.

The 70th Anniversary of the Rotary Changeover Dinner at Garema Hall was a great night on Saturday. The Garema Hall is looking fantastic and the work that has been done out there is a great credit to the community members involved. Next week Councillors Jenny Webb and Phyllis Miller, Director Engineering and Technical Services John Zannes, and myself will be attending the Australian Livestock Markets Association annual conference and annual general meeting in Rockhampton. This will be my last board meeting as the meeting dates clash with Centroc meetings.

On Saturday, I met the Deputy Premier John Barilaro when he visited Forbes. It was a great opportunity to discuss grant funding that may be available for Forbes to repair heritage buildings and infrastructure, especially old sporting infrastructure. The Mixed Bowls Competition held on Sunday was a great event with credit to the organising committee. The weather was beautiful and teams came from across the Central West, one team was even from the Philippines.

Yesterday was our July Council Meeting and I will report more on this next week. The Delivery Program was one of the items on the agenda and will be on display for comment if it was endorsed for public exhibition at the meeting.

I hope you have a great weekend.
