What a glorious weekend it was with many activities to do and see. I spent Saturday at the Bedgerabong Races, watching Security Code set a track record and sang happy 80th to one of Bedgerabong’s old timers, Dan Herbert. On Sunday morning I joined the Walk to D’Feet MND around Lake Forbes.

Councillor Susan Chau and I are attending the Australian Local Government Women’s Association NSW annual conference until tomorrow attending a number of workshops.

Please join us in celebrating Forbes Heritage 2017 next week. There are a number of events to attend including a Musical Mystery Mausoleum Meander with Rob Willis at the Forbes Cemetery on Sunday, the Discovering our Doctors interpretive panels at the Forbes Medical Centre on Monday, a trivia night at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Tuesday and the Heritage Presentation Evening at the Town Hall on Wednesday. To find out about more or to register your attendance, call Council on 6850 2300.

If you would like a say on programs and services the Forbes Library should provide in future, the first meeting of the Forbes Focus Group is on Thursday, 11th May at the Forbes Council Chambers. Confirm your interest on mail@forbes.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 6850 2300.

Have a great weekend! Cheers, Councillor Jenny Webb

On Tuesday we commemorated Anzac Day, which is our day to pay respects to those who made it possible for us to live the way we do today. Considering the in- clement weather on the day, I congratulate those who came out in the rain to attend the services and participate in the march.

At last week’s Council meeting we approved a loan of $100,000 to the Forbes Men’s Shed. This loan will be repaid over a period of 20 years and will help build the new shed on Union Street.

Also at the Council meeting it was de- cided that expressions of interest would soon be called for community members to participate in our Section 355 Committees under the five Community Strategic Plan themes of Society and Places, Economic Development, Infrastructure, Environment and Leadership and Governance. We will let you know when expressions of interest are being called.

Council’s draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan is now on public exhibition until 5pm on Friday, 26th May. Councillors are very pleased with the plan and I encourage you all to read it and make any comments. It is available to view on our website www. forbes.nsw.gov.auor or at Council’s administration offices.

Bedgerabong Races are on tomorrow and it will be a great day out. Council will have a marquee and I encourage you to come and say hello to Councillors and staff in attendance.

What a great Easter weekend. The Good Friday Camel Races were well attended and highly successful. The event is a great credit to Kerry Dunstan and Lee Marsh as well as all of the community groups involved in the day. On Easter Saturday the crowds gathered at Apex Park for a very success- ful Easter Festival run by Havannah House. There were three-legged races, egg and spoon races and of course a giant Easter egg hunt. I know it was a very popular event because my grandchildren attended and they had a fantastic time.

Last Wednesday we held two public meetings for community members to find out more about the draft Our Forbes Shire Community Strategic Plan 2017-2027. There were a number of people in attend- ance and I thank those residents who took the time to come along. The public exhibition period for the plan finished yesterday and it returns to the May Council meeting for final approval.

Yesterday was our April meeting and one of the items on the agenda was our Disabil- ity Inclusion Action Plan. This plan is now on public exhibition and can be viewed by visiting www.forbes.nsw.gov.au or our administration office.

Anzac Day is on Tuesday and I encourage you all to attend the Anzac Day Services. The Dawn Service starts from 5.15am with a march from Templar Street and the mid-morning service starts from 10am with the march commencing at Cross Street.

Have a great weekend and don’t forget the Farmers Markets are on tomorrow from 8am to 12pm at Victoria Park.

Forbes hosted the NSW Lions Youth of the Year state final on Saturday night at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. A Mayoral reception was held at the Town Hall before the event and it was my pleasure to wel- come all the state finalists of the five districts of Lions and their families to Forbes. The contestants presented very well and the winner was Ava Del Tufo, who was sponsored by the Pambula Merimbula Lions Club.

Youth Week was such a fantastic event last week and it was great to see so many young people involved in the activities. Students from Forbes High School and Red Bend Catholic College had a great time during their Colour Runs. At YouthFest on Friday night there was spectacular talent on display.

Over the weekend, Council staff promoted the draft Our Forbes Shire Community Strategic Plan and attended the Rotary Ipomoea Markets and the Bedgerabong Country Fair. Yesterday we had two public meetings in the Forbes Town Hall. We are still encouraging residents to make sure they have their say. The plan is on public exhibition until 5pm next Thursday and can be viewed at www.forbes.nsw.gov.au or our Council administration offices.

This is going to be another great weekend in Forbes with the Good Friday Camel Races and the Easter Bowls competition. On behalf of Council, I wish everyone a lovely Easter break and please drive safely.

There has been a number of swimming club members from Forbes competing in championships in Canberra and Sydney. During our recent visit to Sydney, Maureen and I were privileged to watch a number of our young people from the western region competing at the aquatic centre at Olympic Park. My cousin’s grandson Tom Mattiske was among those we saw swim and he did very well.

On the weekend we had the Armstrong Siddeley Car Club of Australia host their rally in Forbes. I attended the presentation dinner on Sunday night and it was a very pleasant evening getting to know the members. Our Council staff were given a great wrap on the way they helped them organise the rally and they were very impressed with the support they received from Forbes Shire Council.

The Forbes Triathlon Festival was a great event on Saturday from all reports I have received. We hope to continue this great partnership into the future.

It’s Youth Week this week and there have been some fantastic events for the youth of our town including colour runs for Forbes High School and Red Bend Catholic College as well as a Youth Week Awards presentation night. Tonight is the last event for the week with Youthfest being held at King George V Park from 6pm.

Tomorrow night Forbes is hosting the Lions Youth of the Year NSW State Final. The Lions Youth of the Year is a very important program that recognises the leaders of the future.

From all reports the President’s ‪Lunch on Saturday was an outstanding success. The guest speaker Vince Sorrenti had everyone in stitches with laughter and had a very captive audience. The rodeo was also a great success and I congratulate the organisers for putting on such a well-run event.

The Best of Regional Art exhibition opening was held ‪on Friday night. It is an excellent exhibition featuring artists from throughout the Central West. Cr Susan Chau did a wonderful job opening the exhibition. If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, make sure you visit the Town Hall today or ‪tomorrow between 10am and 4pm.

At last week’s Council meeting we endorsed the draft community strategic plan for exhibition. The exhibition period started today and will ‪finish on 20th April. There will be public information sessions ‪on 12th April so please make sure you come along and have your say. Council staff will also be attending a number of events and community group meetings to discuss the plan and gain feedback. This is your opportunity to have your say on the strategic direction of the Forbes Shire for the next 10 years.

The Armstrong Siddeley Car Club of Australia is hosting a rally next weekend in Forbes and there will be a display out the front of the Town Hall ‪from 9am to 12pm next Saturday.

Last week I went to Bedgerabong Public School with Cr Jenny Webb, and we handed out reusable water bottles to the students. As previously mentioned this initiative is to encourage students to reuse water bottles rather than using disposable bottles that end up in landfill. All primary school students in the Shire will soon have a Council water bottle with Forbes Public receiving theirs next Wednesday.

Phil Donato hosted his first constituent day in Forbes on Tuesday. He had a number of appointments. He is very appreciative of the use of the committee room supplied by Forbes Shire Council. His next constituent day in Forbes will be 16th May. To make an appointment, call 6362 5199 or email orange@parliament.nsw.gov.au

Our March council meeting was held yesterday. One of the agenda items was the Forbes Community Plan 2027. This new plan will be on public exhibition and our community is encouraged to have their input. I will keep you updated on the engagement process. Tomorrow is going to be a big day for Forbes. The Forbes Rodeo is on at the Forbes Showground and gates open from 10am. The President’s Lunch is also on with almost 900 guests expected to attend.

Forbes hosted the Local Government Heavy Vehicle Access Forum on Tuesday at the Town Hall. It was a great event. We heard from a number of speakers regarding heavy vehicle regulations and it was very informative for those in attendance.

The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Awards were held ‪on Saturday night and I congratulate the winners, especially Darcie Morrison who was awarded the Forbes Advocate 2016 Sportsperson of the Year.

The Forbes Seniors Festival has been a great success and we had a fantastic turn out for the seniors variety concert on Sunday. Thanks to Neil and Jane Gilmour for the great job they did in helping to organise the event.

Forbes has been announced as a Celebration Community for the Queen’s Baton in the lead up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The baton arrives on Monday, 29th January and we are currently organising the festivities for the day.

On Wednesday, Council organised an In- ternational Women’s Day Breakfast by the lake and from all reports it was a great success with 90 tickets sold.

Last week was the opening of the Forbes High School Wellness Hub and I would like to thank those Councillors who attended the opening. I was also in attendance but a late arrival due to another commitment.

The Wellness Hub is a great initiative with Forbes High partnering with local services to support students and families by offering professional support programs and counselling.

By all accounts last week’s Barefoot Skiing Tournament was very successful with over 40 participants with many locals taking part. Show skiing and fly board demonstrations proved particularly popular.

This week I visited St Laurence’s Parish School and Forbes North Public School to hand out reusable water bottles. This initiative will encourage young people to take advantage of Forbes’ terrific drinking water and to discourage the purchase of bottled water. Most disposable water bottles end up in landfill and shorten the lives of rubbish tips, not to mention the fact that the bottling and transportation of water is extremely damaging to the environment. Eventually all Forbes Shire primary school students will receive an environmentally friendly, reusable water bottle.

While at Forbes North Public School I was able to sit in on the student parliament. They were undertaking a very similar process to council with its Community Strategic Plan. It was great to see our next generation of leaders developing their plans for the year.

Forbes North is celebrating their 60th birthday tomorrow and is holding a fair in- cluding a variety of stalls, rides, food and drink, birthday cake and school tours. This is a great opportunity for former students to go and see how much the school has changed and developed.

The Forbes Seniors Festival starts on Sunday with a variety concert in the Town Hall at 2pm. Seven talented local acts will perform. Entry by gold coin donation.
