From The Bush Wins Forbes Cup

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FORBES CUP WINNER: Gayna Williams trained From The Bush holds out Reward Seeker and Toulon Brook to take out the Bankstown Sports Club Forbes Cup for 2021 last Sunday at Forbes Racecourse.

The Gayna Williams Bathurst trained From The Bush has beaten Reward Seeker by 3/4 length with Toulon Brook third in a time of 1:38 to win the Bankstown Sports Club Forbes Cup over 1600m last Sunday at Forbes Racecourse in wet, gloomy conditions.

With rain and COVID dampening the flagship day, a solid turn-out was on hand all things considered, to watch the “deepest field to ever contest the Forbes Cup” according to caller Col Hodges who was celebrating 50 years as a caller. It didn’t disappoint.

Forbes Jockey Club started with a strong eight-race-card and $270,000 in prizemoney on offer. The record prize money saw some very competitive racing with She’s Smart taking the chocolates in the Shead Nicholson Class 2 Handicap for Claire Lever while Lockdown Gamble won the preceding event.

Yet all eyes were on the main event and jockey Anthony Cavallo rode the five-year-old brown gelding to perfection holding off more fancied rivals on a heavy track that copped more rain throughout the day.

Coming from barrier 14, From The Bush was carrying 55kgs and had brought solid form into the showcase event with four wins from only ten starts to go with two seconds and a third. The horse had never won at this distance having only won at 1400m so the challenge was there to go where it hadn’t gone before and it did.

Sitting among the leaders with the straight in it’s sights, From The Bush scooted to the front leaving challengers in its wake as they headed for the post. The Poet’s Voice cross Endaxi sprinter had just enough to keep a swarm of contenders at bay.

Cavallo was ecstatic with the win, with $22,000 going to winning connections from the $50,000 purse, while second claimed $8,950 and third a handy cheque for $5,000.

LPSSA Success For Forbes Students

Both Forbes North and Forbes Public School have plenty to be happy about after some outstanding results at the Lachlan PSSA Champs last week. With restrictions playing havoc with postponements and delays, the anticipated carnival was finally held last Friday July 30 in Parkes. Both schools have a number of students off to Dubbo for Western Athletics in Week 8. Well done and watch this space for more stories over the coming weeks!

Magpies Soar In All Four Over Jets

Forbes Magpies first grade side returned to the winners circle in emphatic fashion with a resounding 54-18 win over an injury ravaged Narromine Jets at Spooners Oval in Forbes last weekend. It was a timely win for the Magpies and a reminder of the potential the club has after reserves also got the job done in a hard fought 12-10 win of their own. The Magpie juniors also took care of business saluting 52-14 while in the League Tag the local girls also got the nod in a tight tussle 8-6.

Platypi Have Tough Day At Office

Forbes Platypi First XV side look set to finish fourth after losing to Bathurst Bulldogs 28-19 at Anne Ashwood Park in Bathurst last Saturday. Ironically, it also appears likely both sides will clash again in two weeks in a rematch on the same ground irrespective of last round results. Forbes play Dubbo tomorrow in Round 15 of the Central West Blowes Menswear Cup at Grinstead Oval with First XV kick off at 3:15pm.

Forbes Winter Show Postponed

The Forbes Winter Show has been reschedule for the 24th October. The lockdowns in three nearby LGAs, together with the restrictions on anyone who had travelled through those areas, combined with the fact that we shouldn’t be encouraging travel through those regions, made it too difficult to run our event as planned, a Facebook post stated.
We are looking forward to our new date in October when the COVID situation has hopefully settled down. Sorry for the disappointment and thank you all so much for your support. Refunds on all pre-entries, less nomination processing fees will be put through the system today.

Magpies Go Down In Arm Wrestle

After last weeks loss to CYMS, Forbes had a point to prove this week and while they didn’t get the chocolates, the 24-14 loss to Macquarie Raiders was a big effort. Forbes will be kicking themselves for the litany of missed chances and could well have beaten their more fancied rivals. Onwards and upwards though in some promising signs for first grade.

Little Magpies Win Goodwin Molloy Cup

Forbes has taken out the 2021 Goodwin Molloy Cup. Stemming from a rivalry that goes back to 2014 and named after former West Wyalong and Penrith player Matt Goodwin as well as Forbes Stalwart Craig Molloy, the cup is played across all competitive grades with the glory going to the team with the most wins on the day.

Allstars Back To Drawing Board

It was a game to forget for Forbes Allstars who came crashing back to reality with a 3-0 loss to Parkes Wanderers at home. After a good run of results, the Allstars had every reason to be confident but the Wanderers got the win.

Staines Try The Difference In Tight Tussle

July 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

MATCH WINNING TRY: Forbes Magpies junior Charlie Staines had a try disallowed and scored the match winner in Penrith’s 18-12 win over Brisbane last weekend. Staines and the side will now turn their attention to tomorrow night’s clash with Melbourne. Photo courtesy of Penrith Panthers.

For the second week in a row, the Penrith Panthers did it the hard way against less-favoured opposition. This time it was cellar dwellers to Brisbane Broncos who they outlasted 18-12 to remain in equal first with Melbourne going into this Saturday night’s blockbuster.

A tryless first half saw only a penalty goal and a Dylan Edwards 40m two-point field goal separate the sides as Penrith went to the main break with a narrow and unconvincing 4-0 lead. The Broncos were arguably the better of the two sides and both teams were unlucky to have tries disallowed one of which was Staines.

Yet despite the effectiveness of Brisbane’s stalling tactics and the sloppy conditions, one always had the feeling that if Penrith were to click it would be very difficult for an underwhelming Brisbane side to negate. That’s exactly what the Panthers did to start the second half.

Tries to To’o and Forbes junior Staines (off arguably the flick pass of the season from Stephen Crichton) and suddenly the mountain men had an 18-0 lead with 20 to play. Not to be deterred, Brisbane dug deep, narrowing the margin to just six with five minutes remaining.

While Penrith were able to repel the Broncos coach Ivan Cleary must surely be concerned with the record 66 missed tackles his side allowed against a team running second last. As good as Cleary, Yeo and co are who are out, if Penrith defend like that come Saturday, the Storm will be far less merciful.

With Nathan Cleary expected to return, Isaah Yeo to undergo HIA tests and the possibility of former NSW player Tevita Pangai Jr also lacing up for the Panthers, this weekend’s grand final rematch might well be the game of the season!

Wet Course No Bother To Golfers

July 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

With the rain through the week and the difficult ground conditions Saturday’s scheduled 4BBB event was changed to an Individual Par Medley, sponsored by Everest Auto Repairs. The field of 57 players managed to navigate around the course, with scores reflecting the difficulties.

The Handicap winner was Terry Griffiths 3-up, on a count back. On an equal score Isaac Vale once again put in a marvellous performance, with all the good work on the front-9.

The Scratch Winner was John Betland with 3-up, also doing his best work on the front-9. Runner up, on count back, was Steve Betland with 2-down and nipping past Peter Dawson.

The ball sweep went to 2-down. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Men: T Griffiths, Ladies: D Scott; 18th – Men: M Littlewood, Ladies: Nil. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Jake Shaw.

Due to the inclement conditions there was no Sunday Stableford Medley.

Here are another couple of notices about upcoming events – the Bogan Gate Open had originally been scheduled for September 12 but was moved to August 1. This has now been cancelled due to community health concerns.

The LVDGA Men’s 4BBB scheduled for Parkes on August 1 has received no nominations and is likely to be cancelled.

Don’t forget the 3-Person Ambrose on Sunday 15 August, and the Temora Open on the same weekend. Refer to the brochure in the Pro Shop for Details.

Saturday July 31 is the re-scheduled 4BBB Stableford Medley, weather permitting, playing for the Hawke Trophy. Sunday August 1 has a Stableford Medley.

Forbes Showcase This Weekend

July 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Jockey Club 2021 Forbes Cup is on this weekend in what promises to be one of the best days on the regional racing calendar in recent memory. From stellar fields to packed galleries, the event is sure to be a great day out!

The FJC has been flat out at the track from designing new facilities for female jockeys to new rails and bar extensions – the venue has never looked better according to many and the track is in excellent condition despite heavy rainfalls throughout June and July.

A massive boost in prize money has seen the annual event moved from a Saturday to this Sunday, August 1, for the first time in half a century to accommodate the new status. As a showcase meeting, the event has attracted some excellent competition as well. There’s even a country maiden worth $40,000.

The Forbes Jockey Club has remained in discussions with Racing NSW about COV-ID restrictions, and at this stage the club is all set to welcome locals however the event’s long-time supporters from Bankstown Sports Club won’t be able to attend this year due to the Greater Sydney lock-down.

Tickets can be bought online via 123tix. com.au and secure their tickets early. Look out for the posters around town and scan the QR code for a link straight to the Forbes races options.

General admission is just $10 or $5 for pensioners however there is a VIP marquee where for $120 you’ll get canapes, drinks and a race book.

All events will be run as per the COVID-19 restrictions on the day.

July 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BIG END OF SEASON: Forbes Auto Sports Club has just released their calendar for the remainder of 2021 and it looks like a sensational program for members and novice level riders who want to join. Photo by PeeWee Photography

Forbes Auto Sports Club big 2021 program continues with more dirt track action planned and an updated calendar for the remainder of the motorcycle season.

Due to postponed dates the Forbes Auto Sports Club have confirmed new dates heading into the end of the season.

On September 18 there will be an MX Clinic followed by Round 2 of the MX Championships the following day September 19. On September 25, there will be a Ride Park DT.

October 16 and 17 will see Round 3 of the DT and MX Championships while on October 31 there will be another event – Ride Park MX.

Athletes Ready For COVIDSafe PSSA Events

July 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

In what has already been a disruptive year for junior sport, a ‘clear’ path for PSSA activities may finally exist.

With most of metropolitan NSW in lock-down, adjustments have been daily in line with public health orders. New wording from the NSW Government clarifies where school sport stands currently within West-ern School Sports Association (WSSA) – which includes Lachlan PSSA.

“Inter-school sport and physical activity, including the Representative School Sport pathway (team and individual), can occur across Local Government Areas (apart from those in Greater Sydney) with COVID-safe practices in place. This includes gala days, trials, knock outs and carnivals.”

This means the Lachlan PSSA Athletics is back on track and the event will take place under COVID safe practices at North-parkes Oval on Friday July 30.

At this stage the event can have spectators that must adhere to our COVID safe plan, including all adults registering using the provided QR code, social distancing where practical, use of hand sanitiser, disinfectant wipes and all adults to wear a mask. Spectators will only be allowed into the venue after registering and must wear masks.

Check the PSSA Facebook page for latest updates and information.

Golfers Master Wet Conditions

July 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SMACK: Frank Hanns shapes a drive down the fairway in the 2 Person Ambrose last weekend.

The 2-Person Ambrose Medley played in Saturday’s golf comp, sponsored by Brine Cure, was played in difficult conditions. However the field of 68 players managed to cast aside the heavy ground and wet and windy aerial conditions to post good scores.

The Scratch Winners were John and Steve Betland, whose 64 was a masterful display of power golf which included eight birdies and no bogeys. Scratch Runners-up were Jacob Bernardi and Josh Coulthurst with 68.

The Handicap winners were Isaac Vale and Jake Hemming with 64 ½, ahead of Runners-up Graham West and Duncan Sharpe on 67 ¼.

The ball sweep went to 71 nett. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Men: P Kay, Ladies: H Davidson; 18th – Men: B Thomas, Ladies: Nil. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Alec Edwards, a visitor.

The Sunday Stableford Medley had a good field of players who were determined to make good of the weather, and to score well.

The winner was Jacob Bernardi with 38 points. Runner-up was Stuart French on 35 points. The ball sweep went to 32 points on count back, with Louise French being the lucky one. The NTP’s were not recorded.

Here is a ‘heads up’ on two upcoming events – the Temora Open 15 August with a 2-Person Ambrose on the Saturday, and the ‘Bermagui Week of Golf’ scheduled for 11-19 September. Refer to the brochure in the Pro Shop for details.

Saturday 24 July is a 4BBB Stableford Medley, playing for the Hawke Trophy. Sunday 25 July has a Stableford Medley.
