Netballers On The Up After Carnival Performance

July 23, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

TEAM BOND: Ava Walsh, Hannah Stanmore, Georgia Cole, Ebonnie Hopely, Kaylar Emery, Lily Boyd, Annie Banks, Laura Scott, Piper Hanrahan, Libby Dallimore Front-Jenny Boyd, Amanda Emery and Robyn Kenny. Pic courtesy of Forbes Netball.

The Forbes Netball Association Under 17 representative team recently competed at the NNSW Hart Senior State Titles in Bankstown before Sydney was impacted by COVID restrictions.

The team was one of the youngest teams playing in the age division, made up of players turning 15 and 16 in 2021, and playing against experienced players who were 17 years old, making the assignment a tough one for Forbes.

The majority of players were representing in the State Championships for the first time, with only two players having any representative experience from younger years.

“The team competed in regional training carnivals in Forbes, Bathurst, Parkes and Dubbo. Unfortunately injuries plagued the team in the later stage of preparation,” coach Robyn Kenny said.

“The first day of the State Championships was a learning curve for the team, with Play-ers Player for day one going to Ava Walsh”. Day two saw the girls lift their playing intensity, with some great netball, and nail biting results. Players Player for day two was Lily Boyd.

Day three was by far the best of the three days, as the team kept improving their positional play, timing and support of each other.

This resulted in another two wins and some very competitive games in the other three games. Players Player for day three was Georgia Cole.

“Overall, this was an outstanding experience from all the preparation and training, then a fantastic weekend for all the girls to build up their friendships. Their team spirit was always at a very high level,” Robyn said.

“The girls were a first-class example of what playing netball is all about – building friendships, sportsmanship, team spirit, taking on challenges and never giving up in any situation. Congratulations to all the players, you were a pleasure to coach”.

Forbes Jockey Club Gets Make-Over In Time For Showcase

July 16, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

GET YOUR TICKETS FAST: Go to www.123tix.com.au/events/19333/forbes-cup-2021 to get your tickets to the Forbes Cup on August 1. Numbers are limited and COVID restrictions will apply. Check the Forbes Jockey Club Facebook page for updates and latest info.

More and more improvements seem to be happening at Forbes Racecourse every week with the Kerry Nicholson Bar and now the Jockey and Stewards rooms getting a makeover. From Forbes Jockey Club volunteers to Shane Sallaway Painting – it’s all hands-on deck in time for the Forbes Cup on August 1.

Since the announcement Forbes Jockey Club August 1 Cup meeting was to be shifted to the Sunday and upgraded to Showcase status, meaning each race carries a minimum of $30,000 prize money, Forbes Jockey Club has been hard at work renovating the facilities in time for the meeting. This has included everything from track and garden maintenance through to the Jockey and Stewards rooms – now one of the best in the country racing.

The Forbes Cup weekend promises to be special despite restrictions. With COVID forcing many events to downsize or post-pone and outbreaks in NSW increasing, tickets however will be extremely limited.

Other highlights of the weekend will include:
• Forbes Cup Calcutta on Saturday July 31 at Club Forbes. Tickets are $40 and COVID restrictions will apply at the venue;
• Forbes Jockey Club has invested an additional $10,000 in prize money on top of what Racing NSW contributes to make the Forbes Cup a $50,000 race;
• Forbes Jockey Club will also host a marquee. Tickets will strictly be limited and at $120 and race goers will have drinks and canapes included;
• Col Hodges, celebrating his 50 years of race-calling, will also be celebrated with a race named in his honour in a real treat for race-lovers and the Hodges family.

For more information on the meeting, or to keep up-to-date with announcements, read-ers are encouraged to follow the Forbes Jockey Club on Facebook. Given the latest COVID developments the event is subject to NSW Health restrictions on the day.

Platypi Women’s Only Highlight On Tough Day

July 16, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

TRY TIME: Forbes Women’s Platypi had a tight draw with Orange Emus 12-all last weekend to remain in finals contention.

It was a tough Saturday at home for the Forbes Platypi Rugby Union club with losses in three men’s grades and only a 12-12 draw with the Orange Emu’s Women’s side the only result to crow about.

Forbes Colts continued their disjointed season marred by a pandemic and a lack of continuity with a disappointing 50-0 loss to the junior Emus. The Colts were never in the hunt and the result continues a slew of blow outs for the young side.

Seconds were marginally better but were fleeced to the tune of 36-7 by a dynamic Emu’s side that bullied the Platypi from the opening whistle and put pay to any chance they may have of finals football. Firsts couldn’t repeat their previous heroics going down 38-19 and slipping down to fourth on the Central West Blowes Menswear ladder behind Bathurst. They now sit on six wins, six losses and +6 points difference.

In the Women’s it was a tit-for-tat end-to-end battle with neither side being able to gain any real ascendency and the points shared in a thrilling 12-all draw and what must surely be a precursor to the finals later in the season.

Forbes won’t play again until they face Orange City in Forbes on July 24 in a must-win for all grades if they are to play semi-final football. A loss for Firsts and Dubbo may be clipping at their heals for fourth spot. A win, and a home semi-final beckons against Bathurst, potentially.

Orange Emus remain in first place on 47 points after the weekend’s win over Forbes while Cowra (43) and Bathurst (36) are second and third respectively as we approach the nitty gritty end of the season in the Central West Blowes Menswear competition.

Tough Scoring In Saturday Comp

July 16, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s Men’s golf comp was an 18-hole Stroke sponsored by the B&M Tooth. A field of 67 players traversed heavy conditions making for tough scoring. There were not too many scores that bettered par on either scratch or nett.

Division 1 was won by Laurie O’Connor with a 71 nett, even though he had a double bogey on the last hole. Runner-up on count back was Jonathon Morell with 75 nett, who snuck past Barry Parker.

The Division 2 scores were closer with Robert Scott managing a par on the last to finish with 70 nett, one ahead of Isaac Vale on 71 nett who bogeyed the last.

The ball sweep went to 78 nett on count back, so please check in the Pro Shop. The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Dukes, 18th – B Thomas. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Brad Ashton, who was still quite a way from the hole. There were no visitors.

The Sunday Stableford Medley saw quite a few players out enjoying sunnier conditions, although it was still heavy underfoot ensuring scores were quite unremarkable again.

The winner was Andrew Quirk with 30 points, and quite a variable day. Runner-up was Ethel Coombs on 29 points, on count back from Rob Elsom, a visitor from Wynnum GC in Qld.

Your names should already be in for the LVDGA Mixed 4B Champs at West Wyalong (18 July), but late entries may possibly be taken.

Saturday 17 July is a 2-Person Ambrose Medley sponsored by Brine Cure. Sunday 18 July has a Stableford Medley at home, with the LVDGA event at West Wyalong.

Big Test Looms For Charlie And Company

July 16, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

This Sunday July 18 against a desperate New Zealand Warriors looms as a danger game for Forbes Magpies junior Charlie Staines and his Penrith Panthers who have been forced to move to the Sunshine Coast bubble after NSW deals with another COVID outbreak.

Coming off a thrilling 13-12 win against a bold Parramatta Eels last round, Penrith will be forced to do it without a number of Origin stars including halves Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai. Yet Penrith seem to relish these challenges.

In a 12-10 win over the Storm nearly three months ago and again two weeks ago against the Eels, Penrith got the job done without Cleary and against the Eels without Luai and Edwards as well. It is the kind of luxury of depth most teams can only dream about but it means nothing come Sunday for Charlie and company if they can’t hold out a Warriors team running out of time to make a September run.

The following week sees Penrith take on Brisbane before a mouthwatering rematch with Melbourne on July 31 in Melbourne in a game where Cleary, Luai and co are expected to return.

Golden Eagles Dark Horses For League Title

With wins over Grenfell, Peak Hill and Cargo, the Eugowra Golden Eagles were brave in their 18-10 loss to second place Manildra Rhinos last weekend in Eugowra.

Despite the loss, Eugowra sit in fifth in the Woodbridge Cup in what is a blue-chip year for the club on 13 points behind Molong Bulls on 14 in fourth then a trio of teams out in front including Canowindra (25), Ma-nildra (23) and Trundle (21). Eugowra and Molong do have a bye owing with Eugowra having a weekend off this weekend but other immediate contenders for the finals below them on the ladder Peak Hill (12) and Cargo (10) also have a scheduled bye weekend approaching.

Eugowra will tackle Condo after the bye before a season-defining home game awaits against Molong in three weeks.

Magpies Plucked By Tigers

At the start of the season both sides fought out a gallant draw but this time it would be different when the Forbes Magpies took on the Nyngan Tigers. In a game that was largely one way traffic, an under-manned Magpies side fought hard but inevitably lost 34-10.

Forbes is running out of time if they have ambitions of playing finals football.

Panthers Best In The West

July 9, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

It wasn’t pretty and it was arguably their worst game in two years but the Penrith Panthers have won a scrappy match against a game but directionless Parramatta Eels.

Forbes Magpies Rugby League product Charlie Staines started at fullback, a position he is familiar with from his junior days here in Group 11 and had an indifferent night in difficult conditions.

In a game where the Panthers were always playing catch up, Parramatta scored first before Penrith took a 6-4 lead to the sheds.

As both sides traded tries in the second half in a real war of attrition, it soon became apparent that the Eels were only really hanging in due to Penrith’s disjointed attack that resulted in 15 errors. Penrith’s defence held solid all night with both Parramatta tries coming from fortuitous circumstances.

At 12-12 with time expiring, Dubbo CYMs player Matt Burton nailed a field goal to make it 13-12. Even a late Liam Martin check on Waqa Blake for a questionable penalty that allowed Mitch Moses a chance to kick a penalty goal from 30m out couldn’t change the result.

Penrith has the bye this weekend.
