Securing Children’s Safety

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Children across the Central West will be more secure following the training of 12 new Authorised Child Restraint Fitters. The fitters come from across the region – Lithgow, Dubbo, Forbes and Wagga Wagga.

The training was conducted by Mobility Engineering, who have been contracted by Roads and Maritime Service to oversee the Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station network in NSW for the past 20 years.

“Two in three child restraints are not being used properly. If you have trouble fitting or adjusting your child restraint, visit an Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station.”

The free one day training course was comprised of theory and practical sessions. During the theory session participants learnt about the different types of child restraints, the National Laws and vehicle modifications. During the practical session participants were required to correctly install three child restraints with and without gated buckles.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, welcomes the new Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station in Forbes – Forbes Auto Electrical.

“Thanks to Forbes Auto Electrical for attending, becoming a new Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station and helping to keep children safe. They will join our existing Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station in Forbes – Jelbart Dawsons.

“The correct selection and installation of child restraints is vital. It is important to make sure that your precious cargo is safe and buckled up every time they are in the car – whether it’s a five minute or five hour journey,” Ms Suitor said.

Get Your Flu Shot Now

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Flu vaccinations are now available at both Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies.

Why should you have a flu vaccination?

• Having an annual flu vaccination is the best way to prevent catching and spreading the flu.

• Each year, the flu causes an estimated 13,500 hospitalisations and more than 3,000 deaths among Australians aged over 50 years.

• Last year (2017), Australia experienced one of the worst flu seasons in recent years.

• While in some cases, influenza vaccination may not prevent a person developing the flu virus, it can help to reduce the severity and/or duration of the flu and potentially prevent further serious complications.

• It is important to have the vaccine each year to continue to be protected because your immunity decreases over time and flu strains change year to year.

For people who are over 65, aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or who have chronic health conditions, you may be entitled to a free vaccination from your GP.

Drop in any time…

There is no need to make an appointment, just call in to either Pharmacy and our accredited Pharmacists are available to provide you with a flu shot straight away.

However, if you would like to make an appointment you can ring Flannery’s on 685 2111 or Life on 6852 2001.

Supporting our Community

For each vaccination given, Life and Flannery’s Pharmacies will be making a donation to two local organisations, so when you have your flu vaccination you’ll be given a token to choose which charity you want us to donate to.

Incapacity…Physically And Or Mentally

What might happen when you become unable to look after yourself is something that most people do not want to think about. While that is understandable, not having instructions in place can have unwanted effects.

Most people know about making a will and having instructions in place for when they die, but planning for being incapacitated in some way is very often overlooked.

Unfortunately, although you might be incapacitated in some way and cannot attend to things like paying your mortgage, keeping the car registered and so on, these things do not go away. Doctors and other professionals cannot make decisions about how to treat you and keep things in order when you cannot do so for yourself.

That is why it might be wise to draw up a set of instructions, to be carried out by a trusted family member, friend or professional, about how to manage your financial affairs and health decisions when you cannot. There are any number of reasons why you might not be able to manage: age, sickness, you are going overseas on your trip of a lifetime to climb Mt Everest…

In New South Wales you can appoint someone under an enduring power of attorney to look after your finances and an enduring guardian to make decisions about your health. Both documents are enduring in that they can operate even when you cannot. Both can be tailored to suit the level of care that you think you might require.

If you think that you, or a member of your family, might benefit from this sort of planning, we at MATTHEWS WILLIAMS can help you not only with the formalities, but with advice about the sorts of matters that might matter. Do contact us.

Primary Students “LEEP” Into High School!

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

For 42 primary students, the introduction to high school came a little sooner than expected, with the commencement of Forbes High School’s Lachlan Engagement and Enrichment Program (LEEP) last term. Primary students from five local primary public schools had the opportunity to take part in the 2018 program.

LEEP is a program for gifted and talented students from stages 2 and 3 in the Forbes area. It is run by the staff of Forbes High School and promotes the collaboration of the High School with the local public primary schools. The purpose of LEEP is to enhance the exposure to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for primary school students.

Ms Edwards, Forbes High School Relieving Deputy Principal said. “Creating strong partnerships and connecting to our partner primary schools and families is important to our school.”

Students are supported by professional and dedicated staff, with Mathematics Head Teacher Mr Player and Science Teacher Ms Hall, leading the two groups through various mathematics and science lessons throughout the day. Each stage spends half a day in Mathematics and the other in Science participating in a range of activities that cover Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and practical and applied Mathematics.

“Providing opportunities for students to be able to extend their learning is important to do and necessary for students to reach their full potential,” said Jason Nottingham, Relieving Principal. Currently LEEP focuses on Mathematics and Science for stages 2 and 3, with an emphasis on a hands-on approach to learning and application of design and problem solving.

Western NSW Leads Australia For The Number Of Immunised 5-Year Olds

April 19, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) is pleased with a recent announcement that Western NSW leads the country in the number of fully immunised 5-year olds, with new data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). This compares with a national rate for fully immunized 5-year olds of 93.5% in 2016-17.

“Immunisation is a critical component in building healthy communities and reducing preventable hospitalisations,” said Andrew Harvey, CEO WNSW PHN. “We are thrilled with these new immunisation numbers that show families in Western NSW continue to make the right health choices for their children,” continued Mr Harvey.

WNSW PHN works closely with general practice and Local Health Districts to provide immunisation education and promotion programs for nurses, doctors and Aboriginal health workers. This includes an annual immunisation conference held in Orange and Dubbo in partnership with the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance to be held on 3-4 May 2018.

WNSW PHN is one of 31 Primary Health Networks across Australia established by the Australian Government that work to support and strengthen primary health care. WNSW PHN works closely with general practice and Aboriginal community controlled health organisations to improve quality and access to primary care in the community. WNSW PHN also funds a range of services to meet identified health needs in areas including mental health, drug and alcohol, suicide prevention, chronic disease, after hours services and older persons care.

The Western NSW Primary Health Network area covers 433,379 square kms and includes both Western and Far West NSW Local Health Districts.

The Biggest Morning Tea

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club will be hosting The Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council Australia at Kiacatoo Hall on Friday, 25th May.

The club held the same event last year and managed to raise $922 for Cancer Council with the help of some locals calling in for a cuppa and lunch.

Once again, the event will offer morning tea at 10.30am and lunch at 12.30pm.

If you are in the area, feel free to join them for a cuppa, morning tea, lunch or stay for some fun and entertainment during the afternoon. There will be raffles, skits and musical entertainment. Everyone is most welcome.

The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club is based in The Lachlan Valley around Forbes and Orange. The club was formed in 2003 as Forbes Country Caravanners. In 2007 the name was changed to The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club, drawing members from far and wide, including Dubbo, Nowra, Wooli, Molong, Orange, Bathurst, Parkes, Tumbarumba and one member from Victoria.

The club conducts approximately nine rallies per year as well as a roving rally over a three week period. The most popular rally is the week long bush rally in May, usually along a river. This gives members the chance to try their hand at camp oven cooking, often getting very competitive.

The club currently has a membership of 132 and a total of 70 caravans/motor homes and is the fourth largest caravan club in New South Wales.

One of the joys of belonging to a caravan club, are the new friendships that are formed and enabling members to embark on journeys in the safety with others.
