Safety Concern Prompts Heated Pool Closure

March 8, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Heated Pool has been identified as having significant structural failures and has been ordered closed by the facility’s insurer.
In a joint statement, the Forbes Heated Pool Committee and Forbes Shire Council announced the facility has been deemed unsafe by a structural engineer and are awaiting further direction for the future or interim use of the pool.

The Forbes Heated Pool Incorporated has been a community run facility for 50 years. The committee had recently approached council for assistance as the facility’s condition was declining and it is located on Crown Land.

Concerns regarding the building lead to the engagement of an independent structural engineer, whose report identified “the building as it currently stands is not safe for use by the public”.

“This is a devastating blow. It is such a valuable community asset. The heated pool is a well supported and much valued fixture in our community,” Forbes Shire Council General Manager Steve Loane said.

Heated Pool Committee President, David Hodder said the safety of patrons is paramount. “If we did not follow the order to close down
the heated pool we would be in a complete breach of public liability, the WHS Act and individuals could potentially face criminal charges if something were to happen,” said David.

“Our committee is committed to do what we can to make the facility structurally sound. “All current members will receive their annual fees returned on a pro rata basis and we are working with council for members to have free access to the town pool for the remainder of the season.

“While the heated pool is a massive asset for our town and region for everything from  Learn to Swim to Occupational Therapy and rehabilitation it does have its limitations. We currently have more than 722 individual users but are limited due to its size.

Once the heated pool was closed, the committee started contacting users and stakeholders to advise them prior to the public announcement. The Heated Pool Committee and Council has already begun to identify and actively seek external funding to improve and upgrade the town’s pool precinct.

Monthly Medal Winners Fire Well

March 8, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s event was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Michael Robinson Real Estate, and was contested by a field of 73. Forbes also hosted the Parkes Club for the Twin Towns and the CWDGA Pennants. The A-Grade winner was Mark Collits with a nett 69, on count back from Todd Callaghan, also on 69. Phil Maher was unlucky to miss out on count back also. The B-Grade produced the best round of the day with Barry Shine recording a nett 65. Slightly behind, was Niel Duncan with 67. The C-Grade was clearly won by ‘Adam’
Andrews with 67 nett. Runner-up was Richard Smith with a 71, who continues his steady form.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, being distributed to: 65 – B Shine, 67 – N Duncan, A Andrews; 69 – B Everest, B carpenter, M Collits, T Callaghan, P Maher; 70 – C Barrett; 71 – R Smith, L Little; 72 – A Davies, D Churchill, B Slack-Smith, L O’Connor, D Earl, K Herbert; 73 – M Watts.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Martin Woods; 18th – R Webb. The visitors included Ben Mackay (Bathurst) getting a practice round in and Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee), who kept Bob Grant on his toes.

The Parkes Club was closed for the day, so the Parkes players had their own comp at Forbes. The club captains used this opportunity to feature the running of the Twin Towns Shield. This was run over three men’s grades, a ladies grade and a vets grade. The best five nett score cards in each grade were collated for an overall score. Forbes were the resounding winners, finishing with a healthy margin of nearly 100 points.

On Sunday, 4th February there was no regular Stableford Medley as Forbes hosted  the CWDGA Inter-Club Pennants. There were 70 players from Bathurst, Cowra, Duntryleague and Parkes clubs, playing across four divisions. They were all trying their best to help their team make it into the semi-finals. As Forbes was the host, their teams did not compete on the day.

Some divisions had clear winners already while other divisions were on a knife edge. The end result of five weeks of round-robin play is that the Forbes Division 1 and Division 4 teams have made it to the semi-finals. Parkes teams won the Division 2 and Division 3 groups.

The semi-finals being contested by Forbes teams will be run at Duntryleague on Sunday, 11th March, where coincidently both teams will face opponents from Dubbo. The Parkes teams will face their opponents at Dubbo.

Saturday, 10th March is ‘Pink Day’ at the Forbes Golf Club. Players are encouraged to wear something pink in support of the Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group and to provide a donation on the day. Let us really make the course stand out!

The LVDGA Veterans AGM will be held on 15th March at the Golfie Hotel, commencing at 9.30am. This will be held before the 18-hole event scheduled at Forbes that day. Players are requested to bring a plate for morning tea.

Red Bend Cattle Team Steer Towards The Royal

March 8, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Red Bend Catholic College cattle team will be representing their school at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on Friday, 23rd March at the Sydney Olympic Park. The team of 10 students will be attending the Sydney Royal, one of the most prominent and prestigious cattle shows in Australia, for a week and have been preparing their steers for the show since last year. It will be the 15th Sydney Show that the school attends.

With just over two weeks to go, Cattle Team Coordinator Susan Earl said the students continue to handle, groom and wash the animals in the lead up to the show where they will be presenting steers for the Hoof and Hook competition.

The students feed the animals, keep the water troughs clean and perform other jobs during most lunches, after school and sometimes even during sport time. “They have also been teaching them how to walk around the ring and how to stand with their feet. A cattle cane is used to help the steer stand square to enable the judge to see the animal from the side, back and front.

“What we are producing is the best steer that has the most amount of meat on it withthe right amount of fat in the right places,” Susan said. According to the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) of NSW, up to 30 breeds of Beef cattle will compete in the Sydney Royal Cattle
Show, with up to 1,200 nominations.

“Sydney Royal Competitions set the benchmark for agricultural excellence that underpins Australia’s agricultural performance
ensuring a viable and prosperous future for our rural communities. “For Sydney Royal competitors, a win is testament of achievement at the highest level,” the RAS website states.

“It is recognition of dedication, ability, uncompromising diligence and sheer hard work.”

Last year the Red Bend cattle team had one of their biggest years when they took home two gold medals, two silvers and a bronze and were named Reserve Champion Heavyweight Carcass. Susan believes the students benefit from the agricultural activity in many ways.
“They get the opportunity to experience a bigger world out there. “I’ve been doing it for a long time and just love it! Not only is it a pretty special competition to be a part of but it also gives the students a chance to learn more about the cattle industry and to see Sydney.”

The scheme commenced on Thursday, 1st March and will run through until Thursday, 31st May in a bid to reduce fatigue related crashes on NSW roads. The ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme offers drivers who have travelled more than 100km from the address on their drivers licence a free cup of tea or coffee from any of the 94 participating businesses in Western and South Western NSW.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said that since its inception in 2010, over 6,000 free cuppas have been given away by 185 participating businesses throughout 161 cities, towns and villages in Western and South West NSW.

Melanie said.

Drivers can use the ‘Free Cuppa’ website www.freecuppa.com.au to find participating businesses near them and also get useful information on the scheme on the ‘Free Cuppa’ Facebook page.

Eligible drivers can also enter the draw to win a prize and fuel vouchers to the value of $600.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update

March 8, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

After a hesitant start on Wednesday the market gained momentum leaving most MPG’s 10-20 cents dearer at the close. Thursdays market saw strong support for the better style fine wools, which gained more ground in the last designated superfine sale for the season, while the broader end retreated up to 30 cents in some areas.

The skirting market performed with mixed results. Wools carrying less than 2.0% vegetable matter (vm) and possessing good length and strength results were highly sought after and therefore dearer for the week, faultier lots and those with less favourable results were highly irregular, tending cheaper.

The crossbred market also had varied results. 25.0 to 28.0 micron were generally 10 to 25 cents dearer, however the broader types lost 10-15 cents. The carding market also suffered further corrections this week after a solid start, with all types and descriptions suffering general losses of between 10 and 30 cents, with the Southern region least affected.

46,490 bales are currently rostered for sale week commencing 6th March.

Grants To Bring Local Heritage To Life

March 8, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

A new round of grants under the NSW Government’s Heritage Near Me program will see $2.8 million directed towards projects to protect unique local heritage around the state. Heritage managers or owners in the Orange Electorate are encouraged to apply, Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless announced last week.

Applications are now open for this year’s Heritage Activation grants, which are designed for owners or managers of local, publicly accessible heritage items, from buildings to parks and monuments to special natural and cultural places.

“These grants recognise the importance of bringing local heritage spaces and precincts in our community to life to conserve their heritage significance,” Rick said. “The Heritage Activation grants are for projects that actively encourage community interaction and participation with publicly accessible heritage items that are listed on a local council’s Local Environmental Plan (LEP).

“This program supports local communities in their efforts to conserve and celebrate their stories, places and values. I encourage all heritage managers or owners across the area to apply for this funding,” Rick said. Past grants have allowed heritage managers or owners, most often community groups and local councils, to undertake conservation work, improve accessibility to their heritage item, add interpretation to a site, or  reuse an old site for a new purpose.

Applicants can apply for support for their projects for amounts from $10,000 to $100,000. Applications close on 20th April for projects that begin after 1st July.

For more information on the Heritage Near Me program, visit www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritage-near-me-incentives, call 02
9873 8544 or email heritage.nearme@environment.nsw.gov.au.
