Braving The Shave For Breast Cancer

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

When Marg Stirling of Forbes started frequenting the gym as part of a rehab program for her back and knees, the thought never crossed her mind that she would be so inspired to help women diagnosed with breast cancer that she would shave off all her hair.

During Marg’s physio treatments she became aware of a group of ladies also visiting the gym that were there for breast cancer exercises. She already knew quite a few of them and got to know some of the others during this time.

“Once I got involved with the ladies after seeing them as well as hearing of the others, I thought it would be nice to do something to give back to them and others that might go through the same thing.”

In that came her motivation to raise funds for women living in Forbes and surrounding areas that are going through breast cancer and who are in the care of Lachlan Health Services McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Dianne Green.

The intention of raising money is to buy material headwear (which can be quite expensive) and stock, replace and maintain wigs at the local Wig Library, run by Janice Cassidy of Cassidy’s Hair Salon in Parkes.

Dianne explains that when women go through chemotherapy, losing their hair is one of the most daunting realities. “Looking in the mirror and realising that it’s not the person down the road with breast cancer, ‘I’ve got breast cancer’, can be overwhelming. For these women being able to wear a wig or headwear is crucial.”

The Wig Library services all people living around the Central West that is losing their hair because of cancer treatment. “People come to us to find a wig that suits them.

We style it to suit their face and we also shampoo wigs that are worn very often. It’s all free of charge and they can have the wig as long as they need it,” said Janice. “It gives the majority of people more confidence. If you look good, you feel better and it also protects their tender scalp from the sun.”

Marg will be hosting her first fundraising event at the Forbes Inn on Sunday, 8th April. To purchase tickets for the event or to donate to her cause contact Marg on 0412 023 043.

On Saturday, 16th June at the Forbes Rugby Union Club, Marg will finally be shaving her hair, which she will then donate to make a wig from.

Croquet News And Results

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 24th February

A gentle reminder to all the Forbes seniors is that Seniors Week commences on Friday, 16th March. There will be a great array of activities and entertainment happening in Forbes that week. Feel free to come along to the Croquet Club on Tuesday, 20th March and join in the hilarity that occurs each time we play.

Tuesday’s game saw Colin Bradley (a regular visitor to Forbes) win two games. Well done Colin. Clean sweepers on the day were John H. Browne, John Cole, Merv Langfield, Bill Scott and Libby Smart. The data sheet is showing some very competitive contenders for the end of year presentations even at this early stage.

Don’t forget the birthday lunch on Tuesday, 6th March at 12 noon held at the Post Office Hotel.

Clean sweepers from Saturday’s Aussie games were Veva MacCullagh, Elvy Quirk and Lorraine Todd. Excellent results girls!

4BBB Par Golfers Score Well

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

During Saturday’s event, a 4BBB Par sponsored by Highlands Design, the 56 players managed to score very well.

Peter Tisdell and Richard Smith combined well to score +11, finishing one shot better than Greg Webb and Peter Tilden on +10, who got there on count back. The unlucky ones to miss out on the count back were Rod Besgrove and Barry Shine.

The ball sweep went to +8 on count back, being distributed to: +11 – P Tisdell/R Smith; +10 – G Webb/P Tilden, R Besgrove/B Shine; +9 – D Mylecharane/L O’Connor, R Morris/S Kirkman; +8 P Maher/M Spice, G Newport/D Bayley.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Bayley; 18th – S Sallaway. Overall there were six 2’s scored, with four on the 9th and two on the 18th. Peter Tilden scored a classic ‘2’ on the 9th, while Alby Callaghan and Dan Bayley matched each other with monster putts for 2’s on the 18th.

On Sunday the weather was mainly drizzle and consequently there was no Stableford Medley comp. There was a group of players from the Parkes Services Social Golf club, who played the course early and enjoyed the fun.

On Sunday the Pennants teams were in contest at Parkes. This was a mixed results day for the Forbes teams. The Div 1 team had a 3/2 win against Cowra. That assures the Div 1 a place in the semi-finals.

The Div 2 team had a bad run, losing 4/1 to Duntryleague, while the Div 3 team also had a loss – 4/1 to Cowra.

The Div 4 team continued their strong performance, winning 3/2 against Cowra.

This also puts the team into the semi-finals.

On Saturday, 3rd March the Parkes Club will be holding their competition at Forbes, as there course is closed for the day. Their comp will run separately to our Monthly Medal.

However, this is a good chance to contest the Twin Towns Championship. The best scores from each comp will be collated to determine this.

Red Bend Catholic College Forbes

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Red Bend Catholic College is a co-educational day and boarding school in Forbes. Red Bend has a proud heritage. Prior to 1977, the Catholic education of students in this region was provided by three secondary schools: Our Lady of Mercy College, Forbes; Our Lady of Mercy High School, Parkes; and Marist Brothers’ College, Forbes.

In February 1977, the three schools combined to form one co-educational high school, called Red Bend Catholic College, at the site of the former Marist Brothers’ College on the banks of the Lachlan River. This merger, as symbolised on the College crest, brought together the great teaching traditions of the Mercy Sisters and the Marist Brothers.

Since that time, the College has expanded in numbers, in teaching areas, and in facilities. The boarding residences, the swimming pool, the multi-purpose hall and performing arts centre, and the design and technology centre have complemented the strong characteristic features of the main College building.

These days the College educates 740 students and offers 150 boarding places.

Red Bend Catholic College will hold their annual Open Day on Sunday, 11th March from 11am to 2pm. Guided tours will be running on the day and prospective families will have the chance to meet the principal and staff. For more information call the College on 6852 2000.

Our Bloke – Neil Toole

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Neil Toole

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? Other than living in Sydney for 10 years, I have lived in Forbes for my whole life. Forbes is a great place for a balanced family lifestyle and most of our friends and family live here.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have worked at Jemalong Irrigation as the General Manager for 14 years.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? Squash, waterskiing, bike riding, camping, fishing or a game of cards with friends is always good.

What are you really good at? Corny dad jokes.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Teleportation. The world’s your oyster.

What is your pet hate? People with a sense of entitlement and indifference.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Our most recent trip to Africa and seeing what the kids got out of it, but by default, isn’t the next holiday always the best wherever it may be?

Tullamore Irish Festival In A Proud Tullamore Community

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Join other festival goers this Easter weekend and head to Tullamore for fun, enjoyment, music, dancing and good Irish fare.

Tullamore residents weren’t content to see their community lose population, services and to a certain extent, heart. They decided that by working together to produce a festival, not only would they have a focus but they would attract people to their small town in the Central West. Thus was born the Tullamore Irish Festival.

The annual Tullamore Irish Music Festival celebrates the entire range of all things Irish – that is, the Irish, the near-Irish, the stereotypically Irish and the not-really Irish.

This year, the Tullamore Irish Music Festival is celebrating the best of two great cultures. John Williamson will be flying the Australian flag with a two hour concert on Saturday afternoon and flying the Irish flag is the Barley Shakes and Blackwater Irish Band. Maria Forde will also be doing a show in the Tullamore Catholic Church on Good Friday. She has the voice of an angel and you will be disappointed if you miss out.

As well as great music, the festival also will be offering Irish food, Irish dancing and a shearing demonstration. The main day of the festival is Saturday, where from 10am to 8pm there is constant entertainment provided, firstly through the street parade and then to the Festival Village where the entertainers start their full program. On the other days there are activities such as Tullamore Irish Festival Art Exhibition, Stations of the Cross, farm tours, Good Friday concert, local self guided car tours, Ecumenical service and a Hooley on Easter Sunday.

Tickets are $60 for the entire weekend and kids under 18 are free. Stay the weekend and camp under the amazing stars and get into the Irish spirit.

Habits Homeowners Need To Break

March 1, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Bad habits are so easy to fall into but in the end, we know they only make us miserable. Here are some bad habits to break now for a happier you (and a fuller bank account):

Taking Long, Steamy Showers: Spending 20 minutes in the steam may be good for your pores, but it’s also great for mould and mildew. Run the fan while you’re in the shower, squeegee the walls afterward and scrub that grout every few months.

Keeping Out The Sun: Shutting your shades on winter days might seem smart. More insulation from the chilly weather, right? Your energy bill disagrees. A sunny window can warm your home and lower your heating costs.

Compulsively Buying Bargains: Finding a deal feels so good, but cheaper isn’t always better. In fact, budget buys might cost you more in the long run. For instance, dollar paintbrushes will leave annoying streaks, requiring a costly re-do.

Running A Half-Full Dishwasher: Your dishwasher wastes water unless it’s completely full. Dishwashers do save more water than washing by hand but most machines use the same amount of water regardless of how many plates you’ve put inside, making a half-empty cycle significantly less efficient.

Going On A Remodelling Rampage: Don’t break out the sledgehammer for a demo three weeks after moving in unless your home needs serious, obvious work. Give yourself time to understand the home’s quirks before renovating.

Packratting: You know clutter is bad, but you just can’t help it. You had to put that unused exercise bike in the spare room instead of by the road as a freebie because what if? Plus, there’s so much in there already, and decluttering seems like such an insurmountable goal. If the task seems impossible, clean out a drawer or reorganize your counter, and then you feel the satisfaction of having done it. It becomes easier to do the next small thing.

Just remember that breaking habits takes time and a lot of slipups. It’s important to be kind to ourselves when we fail. When we create new habits, we’re building new wiring, but it’s not like the old

wiring disappears. Don’t turn goof-ups into give-ups.
