The Sun Records Allstars Return To Oz!

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Direct from the USA and due to popular demand across Australia The Sun Records All-Stars will return to Australia in 2018.

Showcasing the music and the artists of the time, this show is a timely reminder of the birth of Rock ’n’ Roll and the incredible musicians that contributed to the history of music of the time.

The 1950s was the birth of Rock ’n’ Roll and many would say it started in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Records and Sun Studios was launched by legendary American producer Sam Phillips, quite appropriately on January 3rd, 1950, and became the launching pad for numerous Rock ‘n’ Roll greats, most notably Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison.

The music recorded in that building went on to become the foundation of modern music – everyone from The Beatles to The Rolling Stones to Foo Fighters went on to credit these great musicians as providing inspiration and love of music that shaped their music careers.

The Sun Records All-Stars is an all singing, all playing tribute to the origins of Rock ‘n’ Roll where it all began in the 50s at the famous Sun Records.

This was the day that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, also known as the “Million Dollar Quartet” got together in a tiny studio and along with Sam Philips, changed music forever.

The show is presented in two parts, featuring all the hits that captures the imagination, the passion and the phenomenon of this incredible era of music with authenticity and dedication.

The Sun Records All-Stars are playing at the Bathurst Panthers on Saturday 25th March 2018.

Our Bloke

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Kerry Dunstan

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve been living in Forbes since 1974. I find it to be a great, friendly town with very helpful people.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I’m retired now and of course busier than ever. I was working for Mcfeeters Wool for 37 years before that, which is a long time in one job.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like to be with family, relax and watch the races and football. Just casual things that most blokes like to do. What are you really good at? Fundraising for charity.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? To raise a lot of money for charities, so that all of them always have plenty of it to help people with. Simple as that!

What is your pet hate? People that say they’re bored and have nothing to do. There’s no need for them to be.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. We did a bus trip about twelve years ago to the Northern Territory that was very good and will have to be my favourite holiday adventure.

Small Investment Maximum Protection

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Dental traumas from a sporting injury can include chipped, cracked, fractured or knocked-out teeth, a broken jaw, or damage to the nerve of the tooth, the tongue, the cheeks and cut to the lips.

Unfortunately, a single case of dental trauma can lead to a lifetime of dental treatment in order to maintain the strength and health of the damaged tooth/teeth, not to mention the expensive costs involved.

Often repair work can not last forever, so damaged teeth can become a lifelong problem.

We regularly get phone calls from very nervous parents urgently wanting to book an emergency appointment because their son or daughter had their tooth knocked out or experienced some form of dental trauma whilst playing sport. A lot of these injuries can be prevented if only they had been wearing a good protective mouth guard at the time. Not just any ordinary mouth guard (like a stock mouth guard available over -the-counter) will do, but a professionally fitted sports mouth guard custom-made for the sports your child is playing.

One size fits all or ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards are ill-fitted and loose in the mouth, they offer limited protection, are quite uncomfortable to wear and can sometimes make breathing and speaking difficult. No wonder kids don’t like to wear them! If you ask me, I think they are a complete waste of money and wearing them can be even more dangerous during impact as they can do more harm than good.

For a custom fitted mouthguard, visit Forbes Family Dentists in 2 Templar Street or call them on 6851 5505.

MAYORAL NOTES

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Thank you to the Forbes Shire Council staff, in particular Grants Officer Andrew Rawsthorne, for compiling highly successful grant applications of over $430,000 for major and significant projects in our community announced this week.

The funds are part of the State Government’s Stronger Country Communities grants and round two is now open. Council will be looking at more projects with different groups. If your group has a project or is interested, contact a Councillor or Andrew. Applications close on 4th May.

Councillors also met to review the flood plain study, with a draft expected in the next few weeks and a document for community consultation to be released following that.

Today is a huge day for Kerry Dunstan as he undertakes his Seventy for 70 Thousand WALK from Condobolin to Forbes to raise funds for two local cancer charities, Can Assist and the Breast Cancer Support Group. I will be ready and raring to welcome his party to town when they arrive.

I urge anyone who wishes to be involved in the Community Reference Panel to express their interest now. It is a great opportunity for people to be involved in and represent the community and advise Council on the service levels and delivery.

Maureen and I are looking forward to attending the rugby lunch on Saturday. This will actually be our first time in attendance as we are usually on babysitting duties, so I am very excited to be able to attend this year.

Kind regards

Mayor Graeme Miller

Baker’s Cyst

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

A Baker’s cyst, also known as a Popliteal cyst, is a swelling at the back of the knee joint. Baker’s cysts are fairly common and are associated with chronic swelling within the knee joint. They occur, most frequently, secondary to degenerative disease within the knee joint such as osteoarthritis or meniscal degeneration. The main sign that a Baker’s cyst is present will be a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind the knee.

This may be tender to touch with pain and stiffness often worsening as the knee is straightened after activity or when squatting or kneeling.

Just as a door hinge requires oil to reduce friction and allow smooth movement, similarly, the cartilage and tendons in the knee joint rely on a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid circulates around the knee joint and in and out of various fluid sacs called bursae that communicate with the knee joint. Sometimes when a structure within the knee joint is damaged or inflamed too much fluid is produced. If this fluid gets trapped in the popliteal bursae it is called a Baker’s cyst.

If a Baker’s cyst is suspected, the whole knee joint should be assessed thoroughly as treatment involves treatment of the underlying cause. Once the cause has been addressed the swelling generally settles down. Sometimes the bursae might be drained or surgically removed but if the underlying cause of the swelling is not corrected the swelling will just return.

Strengthening exercises for the lower limb can help to improve joint biomechanics and to decrease the load on the knee.

For the fitness of you.

Electronic Land Conveyancing And PEXA

March 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The complex laws of contracts still apply to land conveyancing, but the method solicitors undertake conveyancing is changing as we go down the electronic pathway.

As the NSW Government has imposed electronic settlements through a company called PEXA, it will become compulsory in the near future for the more common conveyancing settlements to happen electronically. Note: Settlements are when the final monies are paid while at the same time transfers and deeds are handed over, mortgages are discharged and/or mortgages are created on land.

Forms still need to be completed, but they are done over the internet. Settlements still take place over the internet, but registration, paying stamp duty and other payments are done electronically and much quicker than the current paper system.

Some transactions are already compulsory, for example, stand alone mortgage discharges can no longer be done on paper but must be done through PEXA and thus electronically. For those who have paid off their mortgages and simply want to have their mortgages discharged, they should approach their financial institution and solicitor to arrange registration of that discharge to avoid the mortgage still being registered on their title.

All solicitors and financial institutions will need to be registered by 1st July, 2018 with PEXA so that settlements may take place. There will still be the need to have a paper contract and some paper settlements for less common transactions will still need to happen.

Here at MATTHEWS WILLIAMS we have been registered with PEXA from almost the inception of electronic conveyancing and we can help you. Do contact us.
