Wash Outs A Plenty Over The Weekend

November 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

WET TRACK: The Forbes Autosports Club Round 3 MX Forbes Long Track was called off on the weekend after the track was deemed unsafe to ride. Pic courtesy of FASC.

After 18 months of little to no sport, rain was the last thing needed. From cricket to croquet to the Forbes Long Track Round 3 MX – most sporting events that weren’t under a roof were called off this weekend due to extensive rain and major flooding.

Senior and junior cricket were called at the end of last week after showers late last Friday scuppered any chance of play and as rain went into Saturday other junior sports followed suit as did seniors. By late Saturday afternoon the only sport was on television.

Meanwhile the track at the Forbes Autosports Club looked more like quicksand. Officials inspected the site and were hopeful of some racing but the God’s refused to listen as more rain fell while the track was being assessed forcing the club to cancel late.

The club will refund nominees in the Forbes Long Track and may still yet look for another weekend in the future to hold their race meet if possible so watch this space. Refunds can be obtained by calling the FASC Office on 0409 918 019.

Field Of Dreams For Bruce With Life Membership Award

November 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FIELD OF DREAMS: Bruce Field with his Forbes Croquet Club Life Membership Award given to him by President Elvy Quirk at the Forbes Croquet courts last week. Bruce has been a tremendous supporter of the club since its inception and continues to be a valued and contributing member.

In the 1989 Kevin Costner film, Field Of Dreams, a farmer has a vision about turning his barely profitable farm into a baseball field because he had a dream. If you build it, they will come.

When the Forbes Croquet Club began, founding members also had a vision and Bruce Field was recently awarded life membership for his tireless efforts throughout helping build the local croquet club into what it is today. The club stalwart, like many in the club, has worn multiple hats since joining with late wife Lorna in 2009. At 91 in 2018, he won the Perpetual Trophy for Golf Croquet for most games won that year.

Bruce Field, like many volunteers at the club, has often been one of the first out marking courts or helping newcomers to the sport who are trying to learn the rules.

Bruce is one of many volunteers who are the lifeblood of any community group and a cornerstone to their success.

“When he received the Life Membership Award he was quite surprised,” said Forbes Croquet Club President Elvy Quirk.

“He is a valued and well-liked member of the club and we are forever grateful for his fellowship,” said Elvy.

Now, the Forbes Croquet Club now meets twice a week, on Tuesday mornings down near Frog Hollow and again on Saturday mornings. Games include Aussie Croquet and Golf Croquet among others and more families are beginning. It’s a great way to catch up post-COVID.

Congratulations Bruce and the Forbes Croquet Club. You built it, and they are coming!.

Sports Bites

DIGGING IN: Forbes Magpies players, coaches and members all helped local Forbes Unit SES workers and volunteers fill sandbags last weekend as floodwaters rose. Matty Jack and Mitch Andrews pictured.

Magpies Do Their Bit

The Forbes Magpies Rugby League Club has stepped up to help the SES Forbes Unit fill sandbags as floodwaters peaked. It was a big turn out by the club when Forbes needed it most. Great job!

Jungle Deuce 2nd At Sandown

Starting in the eight box a second favourite at $2.80 behind Indy Matilda ($2.60), the Raymond Smith trained Jungle Deuce was always in for the contest. Indy Matilda was starting in the two and looked more likely given the draw. But it soon became apparent True Collinda at the tidy odds of $7.50 had caused an upset while Jungle Deuce had to settle for second with Tiberia Bale in third.

Rain Mars Drane In Asia Talent Cup

He may have started from position 19 on the grid for Race 1 and 2 but Tom Drane was certainly up for the challenge when the Racing Asia Talent Cup was cancelled for the weekend. Drane told followers in a post he will be “back at it next weekend and will keep everyone posted.”

2022 NRL Draw Not Bad For Staines’ Panthers But Questions Linger

November 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Charlie Staines last year in Dubbo after Penrith put a score on South Sydney before repeating the dose in a narrow grand final win 14-12 in October. Charlie will be hoping for more game time this year after some of his former teammates have signed with rival clubs. Pic courtesy of Sharon Swindle.

For Charlie Staines and his Penrith Panthers, the first step towards defending their 2021 title will be against fellow contenders Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, on Thursday March 10 in what shapes as a mouth-watering contest to open the new season.

For Staines, work has already begun despite grand final victory parades in Penrith and Bathurst yet to be held. He will have first shot at the vacant wing spot left after Paul Momorovski left for the Roosters and Brent Naden and Matt Burton signed with the Bulldogs. The bigger question will be whether Stephen Crichton lines up inside him or someone else should he suit up next to NSW flyer, Brian To’o. Nevertheless, with Tyrone May also gone and Dean Whare departing last season as well – Penrith’s stocks suddenly look a little thin in the outside backs. Who will play inside Staines next year?

While coach Ivan Cleary and the Penrith Panthers brains trust have time to resolve their shortage of outside backs, the 2022 draw sees Penrith take on South Sydney in a grand final rematch in Round Four and two games against other heavyweights Melbourne and Sydney Roosters among others including rivals Parramatta.

In another boost for the game in the bush and our region, an equal record number of regional fixtures will be played with Bathurst, Dubbo, Mudgee and Wagga among the ten locations the NRL is taking the competition in 2022 in a real win for country rugby league fans.

Yet for Staines and the Panthers it is all about a good pre-season and getting combinations right for round one against the Sea Eagles. The 2022 NRL season may well be the one where Forbes Ferrari Charlie Staines finally leaves his mark!

Smith’s Chargers Fight Hard At The Meadows Without Success

November 12, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Raymond Smith had a number of his chargers in at The Meadows last Saturday with Jungle Deuce in the feature of the night the $150,000 TAB Top Gun Sprint over 525m against the crème de la crème of the greyhound racing fraternity.

Coming from the eight box, Jungle Deuce ($18.80) was always going to have his work cut out trying to beat debatably the fastest greyhound on the planet in Aston Rupee, the South Australian Glenn Rounds trained $2.20 favourite and that’s exactly how the script played out.

Despite a sterling effort, Jungle Deuce couldn’t catch the nimble KC and All by As-ton Millie flyer who scooted away from the field to win by nearly one and half lengths from Tiggerlong Tonk and Do It with Jungle Deuce back in 6th.

The race before Midnight Flash faded to 7th from the two box while in Race 6 The Top Gun Stayers, firm favourite Miss Ezmae ran a credible 4th behind Gypsy Wyong, Zipping Niseko and Super Estrella – the latter two she defeated last start. While Smith will be content he will also know it was his race to win with Miss Ezmae who put in one of her poorer recent performances.

Regardless of the results, his greyhounds have had a tremendously successful year breaking records and dominating on the rural NSW circuit especially in Bathurst of late.

For the Smith clan it is now a chance to regroup before assessing the next move for his kennel of champions – watch this space!

Good Golf Shines Through The Wet

November 12, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

HAZARDOUS AFTERNOON: One local was struggling to find his ball at the back of the 9th on Saturday probably wishing he was on the 19th.

The Saturday Men’s golf competition was a Stableford event, sponsored by Shirley Redfern. It was an early start for the 37 players who were keen to finish and then watch the Country Championships players. The Div-1 winner was Jack Dobell on count back from Ken Sanderson, with both finishing on 34 points. Jack managed a 4-pointer in the count back holes that got him through.

The Div-2 had the better scores overall. Alec Edwards (Parkes) had a clear lead with his 38 points, finishing ahead of Will Moran (Wentworth) on 36 points. The field then clustered behind them.

The ball sweep went to 32 points, on count back – check in the Pro Shop to see if you earned one. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Bede Tooth, 18th – Jonathan Cutler. The 3rd Hole Super Pin went to Jack Dobell, joining other recent winners with a fine shot finishing 1.2 metres from the pin.

There were no players in the Sunday Stableford Medley due to the Country Champs and unpredictable weather.

This weekend has the annual Forbes Nissan Classic with a full field on both days.

Epic Slugfest At NSW Country Golf Champs

November 12, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

For the 96 players that turned out for the NSW Country Championships, it was ACT’s Harry Bolton who got the job done, holding his nerve down the stretch to fend off a determined Jones Comerford from Dubbo.

While it wasn’t Nicklaus and Watson duelling in the sun at Turnberry in 1977 after overnight showers, it was close to the next best thing. The winning team on the day was ACT-Monaro (8-under) ahead of New-castle (4-under). Lachlan Valley finished in a credible 6th spot.

Bolton had to do it the hard way after starting behind first-round leader Dominic Falk, and never found his groove until the 5th where his birdie three suddenly gave him the spark he had been missing. Comerford meanwhile birdied five of the first nine holes in a hot start and was the man to chase as the players headed to the back nine.

As Bolton held firm, Charlestown’s Jye Pickin also made his move up the leader-board culminating in a riveting shot for shot war of attrition over the closing holes with Bolton and Comerford.

Birdies on 12, 13 and 16 helped but a bogey on his last hole of the day – the 17th saw him slip back to -8 for the tournament.

In the end though, it was Bolton’s consistency and ability to make the right play at the right time that got him and the ACT team home. Birdies on 15 and 16 got Bolton to -9, and a brave up-and-down on the last was enough for the spoils.

The win books him into the Golf Challenge NSW Open at Concord Golf Club in March.
