It promises to be a great end to the swim season and hopefully with no more disruptions.

New League Season Will Be Special

The new merged competitions this year promise to create a lot of interest in country rugby league. Whereas previously we would never see Forbes v Bathurst or Orange outside a pre-season trial, we now get a chance to see where the real strength in the region lies. It should make for a cracking season and already Forbes players are training hard after two years of disruptions.

January 21, 2022 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire will benefit from the latest round of projects rolling out to deliver new and upgraded facilities, infrastructure and programs that make a big difference to everyday life in the bush.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier Sam Farraway said projects like these build upon the NSW Government’s vision to help make regional NSW the best place to live, work and visit.

“In the Forbes Shire, we’re going to see $414,077 invested into 4 projects across the shire. South Circle & Grinstead Oval will receive $200,000 to construct two new female change rooms as well as the refurbishment of the existing male change rooms. $52,143 will be invested into the Youth and Community Centre to create access to the existing mezzanine level to improve storage, installation of a rock wall, widen the access ramp at the front entrance to ensure accessibility and compliance with the Council’s Disability Inclusion Plan as well as the installation of new lounges and a TV,” Mr Farraway said.

“Spooner Oval will receive $161,754 to upgrade the canteen. This project will see the Canteen overhauled to improve safety, meet modern food handling standards and support local volunteers. The final project to be funded from round 4 of Stronger Country Communities Funding is the Forbes Heated Pool which will receive $180,000 to upgrade to meet National Standards as well as the construction of new change rooms and amenities at the pool,” he said.

“This builds on the NSW Government’s ongoing support of the Forbes Shire through the Stronger Country Community Fund delivering over $2,000,000 in funding from the first four rounds invested across the Shire.”

December 17, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

TEEING OFF: Jeff House tees off as Max Haley watches on at Forbes Golf Club recently.

The Saturday Men’s golf competition was the December Monthly Medal Stroke event, sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, and also incorporated the ‘Medal Of Medallists’ for 2021.

Tony Cogswell (69 nett) won the ‘Medal of Medallists’ on count back from Peter Cowhan. Tony had one hiccup, but Peter’s putter misbehaved quite a bit when it mattered.

The A-Grade December medal was won by Phil Duke, also on count back from Kim Herbert when both finished on 67 nett. The B-Grade medal went to Bruce Chandler(68) from runner-up Tony Cogswell (69).

The best score of the day went to the C-Grade medal winner. Steve Grallelis (66 nett) was comfortably in front of Dave Bernardi (71) to earn the honours there.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett, on count back – check in the Pro Shop to see if you earned one. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Kim Herbert, 18th – John Betland. The 3rd Hole

Super Pin went to Todd Callaghan, smooth-ing a delicate shot to finish 1.7 metres from the pin.

There were no players in the Sunday Stableford Medley, with many people look-ing to family time away from the mozzies.

There will be much interest in the Ham Day comp tomorrow Saturday December 18. This will complete the serious stuff for the calendar year 2021. Stableford Med-ley’s are scheduled across the Christmas and New Year break with the January Monthly medal set for January 8, 2022.
Meanwhile the Sixes comp has kicked back in, with quite a few good scores recorded in the past week.

Head Pro Adam held a Mizuno Equipment Day last Tuesday and is scheduling some more equipment days in 2022. Speak to Adam if you are interested in trying anything specific.

WORLD CHAMP: Hayless Redfern is a World Cham-pion in Kettlebell after taking home the gold in Bendigo recently. Pic courtesy of Donovan Chin Sports Images

Haylee Redfern has had plenty of positives in her life but to represent Australia and then win her first World Championships in Kettlebell at Bendigo recently might just take the cake.

The Forbes local, who was originally meant to travel to France to compete, busted it out 10 hours ahead of the other 16 competing countries in the IKMF World Championships and did enough to get the gold.

“I’ve been talking about qualifying & representing Australia in Kettlebell Sport for some time now. Years in fact,” Haylee said in an online statement thanking her supporters after the win.

“I’m incredibly grateful we were all given the opportunity to still participate and on Australian soil,” she said.

Haylee was the overall winner not for one – but both lifts and secured her first ever Master Of Sport in both lifts!

“I didn’t get to stand on that podium on this occasion nor do I have medals to show for it yet though they are en route to Australia apparently. It’s why I worked so darn hard at those countless 4am training sessions!”

Drane, is also an official team member next year of the Oceania Junior Cup and with form like this, will no doubt feature

Golfers Come Flooding Back

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

At one point it seemed like there wouldn’t be any golf for weeks on end but after a great deal of work, the course staff were able to prepare nine holes to allow for the commencement of competitive golf on Saturday to the delight of players and partners everywhere!

Saturday’s Men’s comp was changed to a stroke event, sponsored by the FGA, where the players traversed around the modified back-9 twice. The 16 competitors braved the swarms of mosquitoes to get some exercise.

The winner was Wayne O’Neill who managed a 71 nett. He scored the same on seven holes in his two circuits but managed to improve by two shots on the 14th to snare the win. Runner-up was Alf Davies with a 72 nett, compiled with resounding consistency despite the heavy track and humidity.

The ball sweep went to: 74 – C Dwyer; 75 – I Vale, Troy Howe; 76 – P Barnes on count back. The NTP’s went to 18th first time – C Dwyer, 18th second time – nil.

Sunday had a small field in the Stroke Medley. Phil Maher was successful with 72 nett, followed by Brian Everest on 76 nett. There was no ball sweep and no NTP’s.

The re-programmed 3-Person Ambrose set for Sunday December 12th has been postponed into 2022, when the course will be able to support a full 18-hole event.

Do not forget that the Summer Sixes comp is up and running again, and make sure you get your Christmas present ideas sorted in the Pro Shop.
