Rook Again, Outdoor Chess Push

December 10, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

ROOK, LINE AND SINKER: Dave Cutler, who has a solid Chess rating of 1250 (grandmasters are 2600-3200 while novices start at 500) is looking at starting a local Forbes Chess Club with regular outdoor games along Forbes picturesque lakeside. Pic submitted.

Local primary school teacher Dave Cutler grew up playing chess with his grandfather. It was something they just did and a memory he holds dear to this day. Chess, for the uninitiated, is not only a popular sport played across the world by approximately 600,000,000 people, but also mandatory in Armenian schools for children over six years and one of the few that allows anyone of any age, race, sex or denomination to play.

“Chess gives everyone a chance and helps improve memory function,” said Dave Cutler.

“It is a great way to connect with people of all abilities and walks of life and relies only on tactics and strategy – not strength, size or speed,” he said. “And most importantly, it’s fun!”

Cutler, who plays online and with local friends, is keen to push a Forbes Chess Club and start playing outdoors amongst the town’s amazing scenery. Having just travelled around Australia during the COVID pandemic with minimal disruption, he’s as qualified as anyone when he says Forbes is among the most beautiful towns in the country and ideal for outdoor chess matches.

“The Queen’s Gambit has sent the world a bit chess mad so now is as good a time as any to see if there is any interest in a regular catch up,” Dave said.

“It is also a great workout with some players losing up to 6000 calories from mental exertion while playing,” he said.

“I am happy for anyone to contact me and register their interest so we can start a local club. Who knows, we may find the next Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov or Beth Harmon!” Just don’t call it Lawn Pawn!

Time To Get On The Deuce At Forbes Inn After Phoenix Nom

December 3, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

In what surely must rank as one of the best local sports stories of the year, Forbes-trained greyhound Jungle Deuce will represent NSW in the million-dollar Victorian based TAB Phoenix race at The Meadows after being voted in by the public.

Voting for the People’s Pup began on November 22 with greys such as Wow, Zipping Kyrgious, Cash View, Light And Lilly and Bandit Ned among the fancies to get the nod in the $1.145m spectacle. Yet at the death, like most of his wins, the Raymond Smith charger got the nod when voting closed earlier in the week. Smith, who once had legendary Feral Franky, is no stranger to big races and will quietly be confident of bringing the $750,000 purse back over the border.

As a result of the public vote, Jungle Deuce will now line up on the big stage in one of the most anticipated greyhound races in recent memory and arguably the biggest. The Forbes Inn have also jumped on board so trot down on December 18 for all the action. If you aren’t on the Jungle Deuce now is the time!

Applications Open For $200 million Sports Boost

Modern and inclusive sporting facilities are the focus of a new NSW Government $200 million fund to encourage people across the state to enjoy the benefits of sport, regardless of their age, gender or ability, with applications now open.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund will invest in new or upgraded venues across the state with $100 million available in 2021/22 and a further $100 million in 2022/23.

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said for some people, existing community sport facilities may not meet their needs and even discourage them from taking part.

“We want to actively encourage gender inclusiveness and accessibility in our facilities so that everyone can get out and play,” Mrs Ward said.

The Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund will offer funding through a competitive grants process and is a key initiative of the NSW Government’s jobs-creation sports infrastructure plan, providing a construction boom. Grants of between $1 million to $5 million are available, with applications for the 2021/22 round closing on Friday, 25 February, 2022.

Magpies Name Coaches, Signings

December 3, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

GROUP MERGER TALK: Group 11 and 10 have been having ongoing discussions regarding a proposed merged group in a bid to make competition stronger and games more competitive. Players like Charlie Staines (pictured) have benefited from strong group competition however a new league would help junior players immeasurably. Pic courtesy of NRL.com

The Forbes Magpies are gearing up for a big 2022 season with coaches and signings named over the past week as well as discussion surrounding the inevitability that Group 11 and 10 may come together sooner rather than later.

Former Forbes Magpies premiership winning captain Jake Grace is set to return as well as “95 per cent of talent from 2021” and the addition of kiwi stars Dawson Nanai and Alvin Maungaati (both Ron Massey Cup players with Western Suburbs Magpies) also joining the Forbes Magpie nest suddenly makes 2022 look vastly different.

Both Nanai and Maungaati are currently contracted playing European rugby and will finish there before they return to Australia for the new league season.

In other news, the club looks in great hands for the new year with Cameron Greenhalgh at the helm for first grade while Andrew Burton will take charge of reserves and Ben Godden the 18s. Brad McMillan will take the U21s in a pre-season comp and Jared Demaniel will look after the ladies league tag squad.

While the club has been on the front foot with coaching appointments and signings and securing the future, talk over the past few weeks has centred around a combined competition between neighbouring Group 10 with Group 11. It is a concept the club has supported before in the right format and inevitably will be the preferred option to give the 18s and first grade more competition.

Games against Bathurst, Blayney and Orange would happen more regularly and the Magpies remain keen on the idea. Both groups remain a strong rugby league nursery for the NRL with players such as Joel Thompson, Charlie Staines, Matt Burton, Isaah Yeo and many more all coming from the region. It can only help the game in the bush.

Play On: Further Government Funding To Boost Sport

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

In a real win for regional sport and the disability sports sector, a further $2.4 million will be delivered by the NSW Government to support the sports sector as it emerges from COVID restrictions, to help increase participation across the state.

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the Organisation Support Program (OSP) is on top of the recently-announced $25 million Sport and Recreation Recovery and Community Rebuild Package – a program that has already benefited locals.

“The COVID-19 lockdown has had a major impact on everyone’s lives, including our sport and recreation sector,” Mrs Ward said.

“We want to make sure all our sports lovers are getting back to doing what they love most across all codes, from cricket to football, netball to hockey, basketball to tennis,” she said.

“As restrictions ease, this funding package will help increase participation and improve community health and wellbeing at a time when it couldn’t be needed more.”

Ninety-four eligible State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) and State Sporting Organisations with a Disability (SSODs) will share in the ongoing funding package. It will support the sector in holding competitions, activities and programs across NSW as it returns to full operation following the restrictions and builds on the Sport and Recreation Recovery and Community Rebuild Package.

“The NSW Government’s comprehensive support will ensure sports don’t just get back on the fields, courts and pitches but have sustained success into the future,” Mrs Ward said.

This is big news locally as many sports groups have had little to no activity in 18 months. For further details, see: www.sport.nsw.gov.au/grants/organisation-support-program.

Magpies Sign NZ Big Guns As Legend Returns

With former legend Jake Grace set to return as well as 95 per cent of talent locked up, the addition of kiwi stars Dawson Nanai and Alvin Maungaati also joining the Forbes Magpie nest makes 2022 look great. Panthers Premiership Parade

November 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NRL PREMIERS 2021: The winning Penrith Panthers NRL premiership winning squad were on hand in Penrith on Saturday to celebrate the club’s third premiership with fans. Forbes Charlie Staines (standing third from left) was a part of the special day that saw the victory bus tour go through Penrith all the way to BlueBet Stadium. Pic courtesy of NRL.com

The Penrith Panthers premiership parade was held last weekend with Nathan Cleary, Charlie Staines and co. taking a double-decker open top bus through Penrith to a packed BlueBet Panthers Stadium where they were given the keys to the city by Penrith City Mayor Karen McKeown OAM.

There are also plans for Western Division fans to get in on the action with a similar celebration penciled in for Bathurst in January however dates and times as well as location are yet to be confirmed.

The Panthers celebrations had to be put on ice initially after COVID lockdowns and restrictions across NSW not being lifted until November 1. Yet despite this, thousands turned out along the streets of Penrith and at the heartland for a slice of the action and to commemorate the clubs third premiership. Among them was Forbes local Charlie Staines, who played an instrumental part in Penrith’s success over the past two years. Now with a premiership to his name, 2022 promises to be a big one not just for the club but him as well.

After scoring four tries on debut in Round 9 last year against the Cronulla Sharks, Staines, 21, has played 23 NRL games and scored 20 tries – a phenomenal effort.

This year, Staines also had games with multiple try scoring efforts. In Round 5, Staines scored two tries for Penrith in a 30-10 victory over Canberra and only four rounds later it was Cronulla who copped it again when he bagged a hat-trick in a 48-0 schillacking.

In Round 10, he scored two tries in a victory over Titans then two weeks later repeated the dose in a 30-4 pasting of wooden spooners Canterbury. In Round 18, he nabbed two again, against the New Zealand Warriors.

What a year it was – congratulations Charlie and the Penrith Panthers!
