NSW COVID Drama Deepens

July 16, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said this week that the lockdown pain is set to continue until the number of COVID cases in the state is “close to zero”.

The number of COVID cases has steadily climbed throughout the past week from single figures the first week of July to 112 locally acquired infections in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday July 11. A third of those were still active in the community.

Despite well over 100,000 tested in NSW in the past week at the time of publication, a multi-media advertising blitz, multiple testing sites, numerous vaccine centres, a plethora of online information and a strong emergency services presence, it seems many are still not getting the message. The Premier was at pains to get the edict across.

“If you have symptoms, your first stop should be a COVID test, and stay home until you get a result”.

She said in the coming weeks, NSW will have mass vaccination hubs across many regions – expanding the ability for people to access the vaccine.

“Overwhelmingly, we don’t want people to leave home unless they absolutely have to,” she said.

Is Hard Water Dangerous To Drink?

July 9, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council would like to reassure the community Forbes’ water supply is safe to drink and comfortably meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

“Recent reports have circulated back to Council regarding broken kettles due to water calcification problems in the Forbes area,” said Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM.

“It is far from being dangerous to our health I can guarantee you, the dissolved minerals actually are beneficial for those consuming the water,” she said.

“Council has been accessing the town water supply from our Bore fields since March 2021 to enable our Water Filtration Plant to undergo necessary upgrades. We anticipate to switch back to river water in October 2021 once the upgrades are complete. The public may not have noticed any change to taste as our water technicians monitor our water several times a day to ensure the water is safe and treated to the best possible levels. In addition to manual testing, Forbes also has multiple online an-alysers ensuring it is safe to drink.”

$100 Million For Farmers Impacted By Mice

June 18, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NSW Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway, is encouraging primary producers experiencing financial hardship due to the mice plague to apply for rebates for the purchase of the critical mouse plague control chemical zinc phosphide.

Mr Farraway said this is part of the NSW Nationals commitment to supporting primary producers in Central West who have been battling with the devastating wave of mice in regional NSW.

“This new funding will offer primary producers in Central West financial relief by providing a rebate of 50 percent on zinc phosphide purchases, up to $10,000, to help cash flow and confidence to place advance orders on zinc phosphide ahead of spring,” Mr Farraway said.

“Communities in the Central West have done it tough off the back of drought, bush-fires, floods and COVID-19 and the last thing we needed was these vermin terrorizing us in our sleep and destroying crops.

“The NSW Nationals are building a safer and stronger regional NSW and these rebates are part of our commitment to supporting our agriculture sector which gives so much to this state.”

NSW Nationals Leader and Deputy Premier, John Barilaro said the NSW Government was working with manufacturers to shore up supplies of zinc phosphide to ensure the State’s farmers are prepared to stamp out a possible spring surge in the mouse population.

“When the mouse bait and treated grain programs were announced I said there would be more support to come and today I’m pleased to confirm we will extend the program to include primary producer rebates for zinc phosphide,” Mr Barilaro said.

“We will make sure any baits produced with zinc phosphide are earmarked for sale to NSW producers first, and we will continue to work to connect manufacturers with Commonwealth support such as the International Freight Assistance Mechanism.”

Committing To Quit On World No Tobacco Day

June 4, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) was on May 31, with Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) encouraging smokers to ‘Commit to Quit’ as part of a World Health Organisation (WHO) a year-long global campaign.

Tobacco smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Australia. In WNSWLHD, 12.4% of the population smoke tobacco daily, compared with the NSW state average of 11.2%. Smoking puts people at an increased risk of severe complications and death from COVID-19, and is a major risk factor for diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and diabetes.

The WHO has released a list of ‘More than 100 reasons to quit tobacco’ which includes; tobacco’s negative impacts on physical appearance, the risk of second hand smoke to family and friends and negatively affects every organ of the body among others.

WNSWLHD, District Smoking Cessation Coordinator, Nakarri Ferguson, said, “The benefits of quitting smoking are felt almost immediately. Within six hours, your heart rate slows and your blood pressure becomes more stable. Lung function improves within two to twelve weeks, coughing and shortness of breath decreases in one to nine months and your risk of stroke, cancer, and coronary heart disease continues to decrease the longer you don’t smoke”.

“The 2021 WNTD theme encourages smokers to make the pledge to ‘Commit to Quit.’ If you are a smoker and need help to make a quit attempt support is available. You can discuss quitting smoking with your General Practitioner, Aboriginal Medical Service or call the Quitline on 137 848 (13 QUIT)”, Ms Ferguson said.

For support to quit smoking call the Quit-line on 13 78 48, or visit www.icanquit.com.au

Six Million COVID-19 Tests But No Room For Complacency

June 4, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NSW has reached a major milestone in its fight against COVID-19, with more than six million tests conducted since the beginning of the pandemic almost 500 days ago.

More than 3.5 million people have been tested for COVID-19 in NSW, with almost 1.4 million people being tested more than once.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the NSW community should be very proud of this milestone.

“As recent events show, COVID-19 can re-emerge at any time, even after lengthy periods of defences against COVID-19 as they allow us to detect new cases early and prevent further transmission,” Dr Chant said.

“NSW has one of the highest COVID-19 testing rates in the world and reaching six million tests reflects the fantastic efforts of the people of NSW since the beginning of this pandemic,” she said.

“I want to sincerely thank everyone in NSW who has come forward and been tested and urge you to continue to do so – if you have even the mildest of symptoms it is so important you come forward and get tested.”

Of the 3,514,483 people who have taken COVID-19 tests in NSW, 61 per cent (2,138,516) were tested once, with 39 per cent (1,375,967 people) tested on multiple occasions. More than 52,000 people have been tested five or more times.

People in the 30 to 39 year age group accounted for the highest number of tests (1,077,602, 18 percent of all tests), followed by those aged 20 to 29 (923,657 tests, 15 percent) and those aged 40 to 49 (855,231 tests, 14 percent).

There are more than 300 COVID-19 testing locations across NSW. To find your nearest clinic, visit: www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/clinics or contact your GP.

Forbes New Grain Treatment Site

May 28, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes is among 20 regional locations across NSW where the Berajiklian Coalition Government will establish grain treatment sites to help combat the ongoing mouse plague.

“Pending approval, sites will also be set up at other western NSW areas including Nyngan, Condobolin, Coonabarabran and Coonamble, while Merriwa and Walgett are also on the list,” said NSW Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall said.

Mr Marshall also confirmed his hometown of Gunnedah, Dubbo, Holbrook, Inverell, Mudgee, Jerilderie, Narrandera, Scone, Tamworth, Moree, Narrabri, Wagga Wagga and Warialda as the other areas where sites will be situated.

“Instead of the initially suggested ten sites, we’ve now made our grain treatment even easier for farmers to access and doubled that number to 20,” Minister Marshall said.

“These mice are a scourge on our regional communities, but these 20 sites will be strategically located throughout the state’s most affected areas, from Warialda to Wagga, and Condobolin to Scone, to help ease the burden on our farmers,” he said.

Farmers can register for grain treatment through their nearest Local Land Service office, with sites to operate in rotation and by appointment to ensure safe chemical handling and access for staff and customers.

Mr Marshall said the treatment sites would complement the measures already put in place by the NSW Government to support landholders. “Our workshops educating farmers on best practice to manage mice continue to be well subscribed and well received,” Mr Marshall said.

The free grain treatment is part of the NSW Government’s $50 million support package to manage the impacts on regional communities, which also includes bait rebates for households and small businesses, community workshops and targeted pest research.

What’s Your Disability Story?

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

People with a disability, their families and their carers discovered how they could tell their story at the Disability Royal Commission. Lawyers from Your Story Disability Legal Support are coming to Forbes next week to help people tell their disability.

Your Story solicitor Rachael Vincent said the service was created to support people with a disability, their families, carers, supporters and advocates. “We understand there are many people with a disability who may want to share their stories with the Royal Commission,” she said.

“People can share all kinds of experiences with the Royal Commission. This could include negative experiences, or ideas about how we can create a more inclusive society for all.”

“But we also understand that many are worried if they do, their lives may be made worse. That may be through discrimination, or changes to the delivery of their essential services by people who may still be involved in their care. We’re here to empower people to be able to share their stories safely.”

Your Story Disability Legal Support is a joint initiative between National Legal Aid and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, set up to give legal support and advice to people wanting to share their stories with the Royal Commission.

Local staff from Legal Aid NSW and Aboriginal Legal Services NSW/ACT, who know the community and local issues, provide the services on the ground in Forbes.

All of the stories gathered in Forbes will inform the Disability Roy-al Commissions final report, which is expected to be presented to the federal government in the second half of 2022.

The report will make recommendations about how we can make changes to improve the lives of people with disability and empower everyone to live safely and participate equally in society.

Western NSW Businesses Urged To Register For Dine & Discover

March 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Business NSW is encouraging businesses across Western NSW in the hospitality, entertainment and tourism sectors to register for the NSW Government’s Dine & Discover program.

The call comes as the four $25 vouchers have started to become available in several Local Government Areas across regional NSW this week.

“This was a popular announcement from last year’s State Budget, and it’s important our region’s businesses in tourism, hospitality and entertainment register now to benefit from the program,” said Business NSW, Regional Manager – Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe.

“No one needs extra encouragement to have a meal out or enjoy some downtime after the past year, so I encourage Western NSW businesses to register now so they can reap the rewards when the program opens here soon,” Ms Seccombe said.

“Customers are likely to spend much more than the $25 the voucher provides, and they have the opportunity of opening their business up to a whole new potential client base and encourage repeat visitation.”

There will be two distinct categories of voucher, ensuring as many businesses as possible can benefit from the program.

“Two vouchers can be used for eating in at restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and clubs from Monday to Thursday, excluding public holidays,” said Ms Seccombe.
