Steers Might Steal Sydney Show

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The cattle team of Red Bend Catholic College is competing in the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Ten members of the team left on Sunday with the school’s two trade steers and eight purebred limonsins.

They were setting up on Monday, prior to the steers being weighed, scanned, and inspected on Tuesday. Judging of the eight purebred school steers took place yesterday and the two trade steers will be judged today.

Last Thursday the team took the animals through their paces shortly before leaving for Sydney. “The students learn a great deal about animal behaviour,” said Cattle Team Coordinator, Susan Earl.

“It is essential the students gain their trust as during the competition they lead the cattle into and around the ring and stand with them as they are judged.” The students confidently lead the animals, weighing up to 500kg or more, with an encouraging whisper in their ear or a gentle pull on their halter needed at times.

“The animals can become a bit sooky when they are in a strange place so they often seek comfort from the students,” said Susan.

Students elect to join the team making a solid commitment to raise, train and care for the cattle not only during sport but also on a weekly roster at lunch time, one afternoon a week after school and at times on the weekend.

Local Area Athletes Dominate Triathlon

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Close to 300 athletes competed in the six races of the new look Forbes Triathlon last weekend, which now forms part of the NSW Tri Series.

In the longest of the six contested dis- tances of a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run, Nick North from Bathurst won in a time of 4.00.48 with Rhys Clarke (4.06.46) from Werombi second and Leigh Chapman (4.12.00) of Penrith third. Nick said he was grateful to have a race in his own backyard.

In the Women’s Ultimate distance it was Jessica Richards of Orange that took the win in a time of 4.37.43 ahead of Alex Larkman (4.47.41) of Bondi and Shannon Chapman (4.52.35) of Mudgee in third place.

Jessica said the course was deceptively tough with winds increasing in the afternoon and the flat topography of the bike leg meant there was no rest on downhills as there was on other courses.

Saturday’s event was made possible by droves of volunteers to raise funds for local community groups and charities. “The Forbes triathlon festival is only made possible by the hard work of our fantastic volunteers,” said Jody McClaren the volunteer manager at Elite Energy.

Outlaw Team Spitwater Debut In Front Of 10,000 Fans

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Outlaw Team Spitwater from Forbes made its public debut in the Australian V8 Superboats in front of more than 10,000 fans in regional South Australia last month.

For Justin Roylance and his team, the event was their first real opportunity to debut their all-new Outlaw Team Spitwater package, which had been developed by two young V8 Superboat talents from JRE Race Engines.

“Our aim was to put the boat back on the trailer every run, and we achieved that.” Despite qualifying sixth fastest, Justin missed the cut for the second final after an electrical gremlin put paid to their chanc- es of making the podium. We’ll take away what we learnt and come back at Griffith over Easter looking for a podium.”

Like the Keith event in South Australia, Griffith is arguably the toughest V8 Super- boat challenge of the year.

Spirit of the ANZAC: Year 9 students from Forbes High School travelled to Orange re- cently to see the Spirit of the ANZAC Cen- tenary Experience. The exhibition contains various interactive displays, which allowed students to take a self-guided tour through 12 different zones; each zone representing a different aspect of Australia’s involve- ment in World War I. The students learned how and why Australia became involved in the war, they saw first hand experiences from young men and women involved in the war and the aftermath it had on Aus- tralia and the young people who fought to defend it.

Jemalong Residential Village Expansion: The expansion of Catholic Health- care’s Jemalong Residential Village and its merger with Mater Aged Care has been officially approved. The development will bring together two of the longest serving aged care services in Forbes, adding new retirement living dwellings that are modern with integrated aged care services.

Construction will start mid-2017, at the existing Jemalong Residential Village lo- cation on Edwards Street for a state-of- the-art integrated aged care campus, 36 private rooms, a dementia specific space, chapel and a new retirement living village consisting of 20 units. There will also be modern health and wellness spaces, dining areas, an activities room and communal gathering spaces.

Stage one is scheduled to open in mid- 2018. Please call 1800 551 834 if you are interested in learning more.

Here’s your chance to fly: Plummeting towards the ground at 180km an hour from 14,000 feet above. The Phoenix is sending a reporter to see what all the fuss is about. Skydiving is a popular bucket list item and there is a good reason why – the adrenaline rush of free falling is but one. Bucket loads of emotions enter while dangling from a plane and then falling towards earth: excitement, fear, adrenaline, more fear, excitement, awe, gratitude, exhilaration and pure amazement!

Adrenaline junkie or not, skydiving is a chance to overcome your fears and feel free. Places still available this weekend to Skydive in Dubbo with Skydive Oz. www. skydiveoz.com.au/skydive-dubbo/

Kinesio Tape: Help Or Hype?

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

In 2008 Kinesio tape (K tape) was donated to 58 countries for use during the Olympic Games. By the 2016 Olympic Games it was hard to miss; brightly coloured strips of tape decorating the arms, legs and torsos of many high profile athletes. With this exposure, the use of K tape has become increasingly popular amongst the general population. The question must be asked – does it really work?

In a nutshell, K tape is brightly coloured, stretchy tape that is designed to stick to the skin. Proponents of K tape claim the adhe- sive backing on the tape lifts the skin, creating channels of less pressure. They claim it increases blood flow and lymphatic drainage and reduces pressure on nerves, muscles, tendons, stimulates mechano-receptors, improves sporting performance and decreases swelling and pain after injury.

The inconvenient truth for any K tape believer is that for every research paper that shows a positive effect there is another one that shows little or no effect. Numerous systematic reviews have analysed the research data and none have reached any firm conclusions.

Many therapists will argue; if the athlete thinks it helps with pain and performance why not use it? I do not agree. If pain is helped by the use of K tape then it is unlikely there was significant tissue damage in the first place. In this case, tape isn’t needed and shouldn’t be used as a crutch.

Sure, an athlete may feel better after putting some tape on but I prefer the athlete to get better and back to sport by moving without fear. For the fitness of you.

To Hell And Back

April 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Brothers 4 Recovery were in Forbes last week with their inspirational yet spine chilling message.

The honesty of Ed Daley, Steve Morris and Jeff Amatta is beyond brave as all three men have been to hell and back with alcohol, drugs and gambling addictions.

As clean and sober men their mission now is to empower communities and youth to implement the tools to recovery.

Ed’s message is don’t waste your life! He said it was dancing that helped in his recovery. “I needed it for my soul.” Ed completed Certificate IV Community Service and is working as a support worker.

Steve who is ashamed his addiction led him to “lie and steal to feed my filthy habit”. He challenged everyone to “find that why in your life.”

“I turned into the man I didn’t want to be,” said Jeff. “I started drinking very young and before I knew it I was injecting even though I feared needles.” His advice was to con- centrate on education and be with positive people.

In the words of Brothers 4 Recovery: “If we want a good life we need to do good things.”

People Our Passion

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Neighbourhood Central’s motto is: People our passion – service our strength, and the Forbes branch is living it every day. “Our aim is for our clients to remain independent, at home and to provide them with a choice of opportunities,” said Monica Wren, administrator of the Forbes office. “We can assist with transport either to attend medical appointments, social events or do shopping. Trips may be subsidised depending on eligibility and some taxi vouchers are available,” said Monica.

“We are very proud of our new Hyundai people mover and everyone is delighted. Our previous vehicle seated four – we can now comfortably seat seven!” More than 25 people volunteer as drivers, client support in transit and for library deliveries. “Thank you just never seems
enough for our volunteers. They are such kind, selfless people who make the world a better place to live in. I’m so proud of them all,” said Monica.

Neighbourhood Central also assists with delivering reading material from the library, offering craft group activities, as well as opportunities to socialise. “We hold a range of social events, including a monthly morning tea where 40 or more people regularly enjoy a chat and guest speakers.” The Morning Magpies craft group is currently at capacity, but an additional group is being organised, according to Monica.
For all bookings and enquiries call Monica or Lauren on 6851 4550 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

Bizkeys: The Police respond to crimes at all times. Sometimes businesses are subjected to crimes when they are closed. The NSW Police Force maintains a confidential and secure database, called Bizkeys, where business owners supply a list of key holders with contact details. It is an important and very useful tool if say for example, a window of a business premises is broken at night, the police can ring so the business can be secured again. Business owners are encouraged to contact the Crime Prevention Officer for the Lachlan Local Area Command, Senior Constable Daniel Greef, on 6862 9936 or gree1dan@police.nsw.gov.au for a business keyholder form.

Skywriters: Writers and aspiring writers are invited to join the Big Skies Collaboration Skywriters project to author stories, in any genre, about their own or other people’s relationships with celestial phenomena in our southern sky. Skywriters Hub will be launched at the Forbes Library on Thursday, 6th April at 1pm. The Skywriters Project is led by Forbes-based author and scholar Dr Merrill Findlay. Participation is free, and anyone with an interest in writing or storytelling is invited to take part. Sign up at the Forbes Library or at bigskiescollaboration.wordpress.com/projects/skywriters/

Forbes Business Chamber: At the March monthly meeting, Sally Duff represented the Forbes Shire Council to work on strengthening a productive relationship between the chamber and council. The first social media workshop was very successful and well attended, while some fantastic social media ideas are coming through from the youngest committee member Stevie-Leigh Morrison including a business of
the week and regular Instagram post.

Poultry auction: Sam Mackay’s auction last Sunday attracted a huge crowd with 1,058 head of poultry and 128 registered buyers! Not bad for a 15-year-old!

#MONTEfamousreview: Bel – Melancholia, Twenty one year old Melbourne musician Bel, has released a beautiful dark electro pop EP named Melancholia. Written with the premise: There is a beauty in sadness and what would happen if we embraced darkness similarly to how we embrace the light? Building on this idea Bel used her lyrical writing skills and talent for creating beautiful melodies to produce an
EP that will sweep you into a new world of emotion and thought. It is a stunning example of the dark electro pop genre.

Turn The Tap On; Save Money And The Environment!

March 30, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Council’s initiative to encourage young people to drink tap water instead of buying bottled water has reached all the schools in the shire. In the late 1980s when Australia was introduced to buying bottled water, many people thought it was a big joke. Who would be
so silly to buy bottled water when you can drink it for free from the bubbler, or fill up your glass or trusty drink bottle from the tap?

Well marketing triumphed and unfortunately today we continue to buy bottled water in droves. But not in Forbes! All primary students received a reusable water bottle as Mayor Graeme Miller did the rounds and visited the final school last Wednesday. Forbes Public School Principal, Dafydd Thomas said: “We are grateful to Forbes Shire Council for providing this sustainable initiative as it supports the students learning and understanding of the importance of recycling to reduce landfill. All 300 students were given an environmentally friendly, reusable water bottle.”

Students answering a question from The Forbes Phoenix were all aware of the vast number of disposable water bottles ending up in landfill and its negative effect on the environment. Australians purchase about 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink bottles a year, but only recycle 35 per cent of them. The 76,700 tonnes left behind either goes to landfill or ends up as rubbish. In addition the cost of bottled water is exorbitant with Australia alone using more than 300,000 barrels of oil a year to make PET bottles.

Add the cost of transport, and the amount spent on buying bottled water, while it is possible to get the same product virtually free from a tap. Isn’t it time you follow the lead of the students and make bottled water a thing of the past?
