Baker’s Cyst

July 5, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

A baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is a swelling at the back of the knee joint. Baker’s cysts are fairly common and are associated with chronic swelling within the knee joint. They occur, most frequently, secondary to degenerative disease within the knee joint such as osteoarthritis or meniscal degeneration. The main sign that a baker’s cyst is present will be a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind the knee.

This may be tender to touch with pain and stiffness often worsening as the knee is straightened after activity or when squatting or kneeling.

Just as a door hinge requires oil to reduce friction and allow smooth movement, similarly, the cartilage and tendons in the knee joint rely on a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid circulates around the knee joint and in and out of various fluid sacs called bursae that communicate with the knee joint. Sometimes when a structure within the knee joint is damaged or inflamed too much fluid is produced. If this fluid gets trapped in the popliteal bursae it is called a baker’s cyst.

If a baker’s cyst is suspected the whole knee joint should be assessed thoroughly as treatment involves treatment of the underlying cause. Once the cause has been addressed the swelling generally settles down. Sometimes the bursae might be drained or surgically removed but if the underlying cause of the swelling is not corrected the swelling will just return.

Strengthening exercises for the lower limb can help to improve joint biomechanics and to decrease the load on the knee.

Inter-school friendships formed: Approximately 150 Year 5 students from Forbes Shire primary schools, spent three days at Lake Burrendong Sport & Recreation Camp last week. The annual excursion allows students from the four local primary schools to learn and grow together over three days, and is proudly subsidised by Forbes Shire Council. It is a way for these students to make connections before they head to high school. Once at Lake Burrendong, the students participated in a variety of fun and challenging activities. Forbes Shire Council has been supporting this excursion for several years.

Another chance to have your say: After our recent discussions with the community around Council’s levels of service we are now looking for 20 enthusiastic shire residents to take part in a one day workshop to fine-tune our overarching Community Strategic Plan. If you are a big thinker with lots of ideas for our amazing shire then this is the opportunity for you. We are looking for a panel that reflects the diversity of Forbes and for people who will have a say. Are you from the farming sector, a volunteer, a sportsperson, have a business, are into the arts, represent the indigenous community, or are you an active young person or re tired? New to town or have been here for generations? Nominees must be available for the workshop on 22nd July. To apply send an email to community@forbes.nsw.goV.au, listing your full contact details and your reasons for applying by Wednesday, 11th July. Enquiries to Nina Hooper on (02) 6850 2300.

Volunteer/s needed for Parkrun startup: We would love to start a Parkrun in Forbes/Parkes but need a passionate community member or small team to make it happen. There is a lot of support and help offered from the head office, but the drive must come locally. If anyone is interested in leading the project please contact eventsupportau@ parkrun.com. Parkrun is a simple concept: turn up and walk, jog or run 5km or if you’re a junior then 2km. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part. Parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing.

School Holidays: The last day of school for Term 2 is today. We wish all families a safe and happy holiday break. School resumes on Tuesday 24th July.

Forbes Pony Club member, Katie Townsend travelled to the Central Coast this week to compete in the State Showjumping Championships.

Wellness Hub Wins Health Award

July 5, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes High School Wellness Hub has again proven its significance by being named winner in the Spotless ‘Keeping People Healthy’ category at the Western NSW Local Health District’s Living Quality & Safety Health and Innovation Awards held recently in Dubbo.

The Spotless ‘Keeping People Healthy’ award is aimed at initiatives that promote healthy choices, prevent ill health and improves the overall health and wellbeing of the community.

In 2016, Forbes High School observed an increase in complex, student psychosocial needs, impacting the mental health and wellbeing of their students.

This project aimed to establish a Wellness Hub on site and increase access to health services. A multi-disciplinary team was established to create the Wellness Hub, provide outreach services and evaluate progress.

An impressive 207 occasions of service were recorded during the first 12 months of operation.

An extract from the Summary of Award Winners said: “This is an excellent example of how a locally-led project can improve health outcomes for youth and families.”

Staff and teams from across the Local Health District submitted entries leading up to the awards, with projects focussing on ways better health results can be achieved for patients through innovation.

In total, 77 projects were received across 10 project award categories. Award finalists presented their projects at a symposium, allowing projects to be showcased to staff and managers from across the district so that innovative ideas could be shared.

Care For Farmers – Donate Small

July 5, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

As the current winter continues to be a mostly sunny one, the drought tends to pop up in many conversations. One woman has decided it is not good enough to just talk about it, but to do something for the farmers.

“We can all help to give the farmers a hand up,” said Karen White. She started last Thursday asking her friends on Facebook to put together a care package and immediately had a wonderful response.

“Getting animal feed is priority for the farmers at the moment, which means there might not be much left for other daily necessities.”

Karen’s idea is to put together packages with anything from toothpaste to teabags, something for the kids or something to help mum and dad wind down. “A bottle of wine and a bag of nuts could give them some time to relax and not think about the drought for a while.”

Karen said the idea was not to spend a fortune and as little as $4 items would make a difference. She also suggested bags of dog biscuits to help keep the working dogs fed.

Karen will be collecting donations for the next two weeks and a friend will help with the distribution.

Donations can be dropped off at 50 Hilda Street in Forbes.

The Ripple Effect: Every day about eight people in Australia lose their life to suicide. Of that eight, six will be men. People in rural and remote areas are twice as likely to take their lives as those living in the cities. Di Gill from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program says that it is extremely important to know the signs of depressionso that we can help a friend or family member before they get to the stage that they think that suicide is the only solution. ‘The Ripple Effect’ is one man’s story, of the impact of him attempting to take his life on those around him. ‘The Ripple Effect’ is showing at Forbes Services Club Cinema on Monday, 16th July. Look at What’s On for details to get your ticket.

All Smiles At “The Friendly Eisteddfod”

June 28, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Eisteddfod now in its 25th year is celebrating its diamond anniversary. The eisteddfod opened its doors last Friday at the Forbes Town Hall for the music, speech and drama, piano, vocal and schools components and will conclude on 22nd July at the Forbes High School after dance. For the duration of the eisteddfod, organisers and volunteers will welcome more than 500 competitors and 15 schools, representing close to 60 towns.

A reason for the Forbes Eisteddfod’s ongoing success is attributed to the committee’s ability to make all competitors and their families, locals and visitors alike, feel welcome. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Forbes Eisteddfod is affectionately known as “The Friendly Eisteddfod” and is a result of the positive and uplifting experience competitors leave with. This also being one of the reasons why participants return.

Jen Kelly has been bringing her children to the Forbes Eisteddfod for the past 10 years. “It has been such fun again this year! The ladies are always so friendly and the children love catching up with old friends and making new ones. It’s such a great way to encourage confidence in performers and gain skills in so many different areas,” said Jen.

It’s clear that the Forbes Eisteddfod committee have the secret to hosting a successful eisteddfod and that this event will continue to grow and be around for many more years to come. The cream of the crop will feature at the Grand Concert held on 28th July.

Free Child Restraint Checks

June 28, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The annual free child restraint check day is Thursday, 5th July from 8am to 11am at Forbes Pre School Kindergarten.

Forbes Shire Council are making sure that children are safe and secure on car journeys with free child restraint checks provided by RMS authorised child restraint fitters next week.

Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said that the free child restraint checking day is important in ensuring the safe travel of young children.

“There will be a parents/carers session from 8am to 9:30am, followed by an open session from 9:30am to 11am,” said Melanie.

The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk in the event of a crash.

“Most of the restraints we checked last year had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child, such as tightening straps, checking clips and replacing loose bolts,” said Melanie.

Bookings are essential, phone 6861 2364 to secure your place.

There will also be free barista coffee and a colouring-in competition with a $50 prize.

The strength of the ‘amazing’ brand will help to promote Forbes as a place to visit, live and invest.

“The bus is due to travel to Leeton for the McLeod’s Daughter’s reunion and will soon be heading to Sydney for a cruise ship transfer. We will be promoting Forbes everywhere we go,” said Mel.

Australian Record Set for Lambs At CWLE

June 28, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Once again the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE) is proving to be a livestock selling centre of national significance with an Australian record set at this week’s sheep sale.

A pen of prime second cross Dorset lambs was sold for $260 by vendors Mathew and Joanne Randall from Trundle.

Agent Randall Grayson from Forbes Livestock (FLA) was the agent orchestrating the sale.

General Manager of Forbes Shire, Steve Loane said that the Central West Livestock Exchange continues to be a major asset for the community of Forbes.

“Even in these drier conditions we are seeing some big yardings and quality livestock,” said Steve. “A big congratulations to the vendors and their agent.”

The Central West Livestock Exchange is looking towards an expansion so that livestock movement through the facility can be made more efficient. This will greatly improve saleyard operations, lifting Forbes into the top five cattle selling centres in the state.

The Central West Livestock Exchange has an annual combined throughput of 1.5 million sheep, cattle and pigs.
