Currajong Charity Golf Day

August 23, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Mark down Sunday, 4th November in your calendars for the inaugural Currajong Disability Services Charity Golf Day at the Forbes Golf Club. The 10am shotgun start, three-man ambrose event is open to non-golfers through to members with an 18 hole or 9 hole to compete in.

Forbes Golf Pro, Simon Houston feels that it is a great addition to the local golfing calendar. “We are thrilled to be partnering up with Currajong, as they expand throughout the region and we are excited to be able to hold this event. It should be a tremendous day with an array of prizes on offer,” said Simon.

For Currajong Disability Services Communications, Marketing and New Business Development Manager, Dane Millerd, the day is important for Currajong, who along with other NDIS service providers have had to look at a range of ways to fundraise and generate revenue.

“A percentage of the fees, plus raffle and auction item proceeds from the day will go to Currajong Disability Services,” said Dane.

“We will also have a barbeque on the day and call upon members of the Forbes community impacted by disability to come down and participate.

“Whether you play or not or even want to volunteer or sponsor or donate, we will happily welcome you with open arms,” he said.

“Interested players, sponsors or volunteers can leave their details with the pro shop or contact Currajong Disability Services.”

Currajong Disability Services can be reached on 02 6863 4713 or dane.millerd@currajong.org.au.

“Approximately 20 percent of the population is affected by disability in some way,” said Dane.

“We encourage everyone to participate because you never know when you or a loved one may need an NDIS service provider like Currajong Disability Services.”

Local olive farmers, Greg and Clare Gibson of Gibson’s Grove, were invited to showcase their products at the Grape, Grain and Graze Festival (a wine and food festival) held at the Sydney Showground at Olympic Park on Saturday, 11th August.

The prestigious invitation was extended to them because they were awarded ‘Champion Olives’ at the last Sydney Royal Fine Food show and also participated in the prestigious Presidents Award.

They were joined at the festival by four other award winners as well as over 2,000 wines, which had been judged shortly before the festival. Gibson’s Grove continues to show the high standard of their produce.

Prime Minister Announces Further Drought Support In Forbes

August 23, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Prime Minister was in Forbes on Sunday to announce further support for drought stricken communities.

“We are ensuring to provide help to farmers right now,” said Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull at HE Silos in Forbes. “We are making changes to ensure farmers are even more resilient, as our farmers are the best in the world.”

The assistance provides immediate relief to communities, tax breaks for fodder storage and simplifying the application form for Farm Household allowance.

An additional $75 million will be given to 60 councils, of which 30 are in NSW to address local needs. “This will mean farmers would be able to pick up water for free from the town stand pipe for instance,” said the Prime Minister.

“Agriculture is a very big part of the Riverina and Central West and we will make sure we continue to closely monitor it and I will too, as the Local Member, make sure we certainly continue to have the farmers’ backs,” said Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.

The grants will also allow Councils to employ local contractors to undertake repairs and maintenance, upgrade or build new community facilities and hold events and undertake drought-relief activities.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said: “We know drought is felt as hard on the main street as it is in the back paddock which is why our drought response is designed to help farmers as well as the towns and communities that surround them.”

Helping Young Drivers Not Become A Statistic

August 23, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

“Believable”, “very realistic”, “a real eyeopener” – these were some of the sentiments of over 400 Year 10 students from across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Council areas that attended last week’s mock car crash demonstration held at Parkes High School.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said the mock car crash demonstration is the cornerstone of the Not A Statistic! Youth Driver Education Program.

“This program is one in a suite of projects we run annually targeting young drivers in a bid to lower our local youth road toll,” said Melanie.

Nine local high schools took part in the program, which included a morning and afternoon mock car crash demonstration at Parkes High School’s Multi-Purpose Centre, as well as pre classroom lessons held at each of the schools.

“The mock car crash demonstration started with a short film that set the scene about how the crash occurred and introduced the youth actors. Then the curtains opened and the audience watched as the youth actors called ‘000’ for help.

“When emergency service personnel arrived they were confronted with two severely injured trapped passengers, one dead passenger and a very emotional driver.

“The mock car crash demonstration concluded with victim impact statements which highlighted what life has been like for the driver, her surviving passengers and their families six months on.

“There are not only physical scars from a road crash but far reaching emotional ones too. And not just for the passengers but their families, their friends and the emergency services that attend the scene.

“I played the role of the narrator during the mock car crash demonstration, so I was in a great position to watch what the students were doing and how they reacted. They were all glued to the car and the actors – you could hear a pin drop. I think the message really hit home to them about the trauma involved in car crashes because it was so very realistic,” said Melanie.

This year the program celebrated its 10th anniversary with the launch of a commemorative book. The book catalogues the program’s origins, purpose and achievements, as well as lists all 100 past cast, crew and helpers and contains endorsements from the mayors and local emergency services involved.

Over the last 10 years, there has been a 27 percent reduction in crashes on local roads involving a young driver.

Are Your Bones Healthy?

August 16, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Flannery’s Pharmacy will be hosting a Bone Density Clinic in-store on Wednesday, 29th August.

Your bones are living tissues that are both flexible and strong. They act to support and move your body, protect your organs, create white and red blood cells and to store essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus. Throughout your life your bones are always changing and remodelling. You can think of it like a bank account, into which you make deposits and withdrawals.

“Osteoporosis occurs when too little bone is formed, too much bone is lost, or a combination of both occurs,” said Tracey Edwards, Pharmacist at Flannery’s Pharmacy.

“When this happens your bones become more brittle and can fracture more easily,” said Tracey. “Ideally, you will have made more ‘deposits’ than ‘withdrawals’ during your early years to create the strongest bones possible”.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include increasing age, being female (especially post menopausal), a family history of osteoporosis and/or a history of fractures as an adult. Lifestyle risk factors include low dietary calcium intake, low vitamin D intake, low levels of physical activity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and low or excessive body weight.

“The heel ultrasound test offered by the pharmacy is a screening test that gives a snapshot of your bone health,” said Tracey.

“Screening tests alone cannot accurately diagnose osteoporosis but they can be used in conjunction with your personal risk factors so that you and your GP can decide which course of action is best for you”.

If you would like an appointment for the Bone Density Clinic, please call instore or phone Flannery’s Pharmacy on 6852 1111.

Cost is $20 and bookings are essential.

Freight Changes To Support Farmers

August 16, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The NSW Government’s new improved access for heavy vehicles carrying supplies and stock to drought-affected areas was welcomed by Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless.

The new NSW Class 3 Drought Assistance Dimension Exemption Notice, which came into effect this week, will allow more hay to be transported per truckload, reducing costs for farmers.

Rick said with 100 percent of NSW in drought there has been a greater demand to transport hay. “We know freight is a huge cost so the more hay we can get on one load the cheaper it is for our farmers.”

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals have committed more than $1 billion in drought assistance to date. This is another step designed to help assist farmers at this difficult time,” said Rick.

Drought applications are being prioritised through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) portal, by including the word DROUGHT in the reference section of the application.

For any questions transport operators or farmers may have contact the dedicated hotline 1800 952 292 or visit www.rms.nsw. gov.au/drought-freight.

You’re Never Too Young To Have A Will

August 16, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Writing a Will is often seen as something that can be done in the future or not being necessary. However NSW Trustee & Guardian is encouraging everyone over the age of 18 to consider it now. Even if you don’t think you have much, a Will is still important as you may have more assets than you realise.

For anyone that has ever worked full or part time, you may have a superannuation policy that would be paid out if you passed away. Some super funds also include life insurance policies so these can be sizeable assets.

If you own property, a bike or car you may already have thought about what you would like to happen to these items if you pass away. You may also like to include tools, jewellery, furniture or tech gadget purchases in your Will.

For those in relationships or with family and friends to think about, a Will can also help ensure your wishes are followed and the things you care about are looked after. Perhaps there is a charity or cause that you are passionate about and would like to acknowledge them in your Will.

NSW Trustee & Guardian is the state’s largest Will maker and can help get you started if you haven’t had a Will created before. They’ve got the experience meaning there’s no Will too large or too small for them to handle. They will be holding a Plan Ahead Day at Forbes Court House on Wednesday 29 August, where you can make or update your Will or Power of Attorney documents. To make an appointment, call 1300 723 037 or start online: tag.nsw.gov.au/planahead

*Fees may apply.

How To Rediscover Your Fitness Mojo

August 16, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Being active doesn’t just make you feel good, it is good for you. The list of benefits is long and sweeping as almost on a daily basis, scientists identify new health perks of regular physical activity.

To make exercise part of your routine you need to prioritise and commit.

Start small: Think about your current fitness level and start with something achievable, but slightly challenging.

Aim to be active for 20 to 30 minutes per day. If you want to do more, gradually increase the duration.

Make it a non-negotiable: Rather than viewing exercise as a ‘nice to have’, treat it like any other element of your daily routine.

Like having a shower, eating breakfast and going to work – you don’t really think about it, you just do it.

Set a goal: Having an exercise goal to work towards, such as a fun run, gives your training focus. Plus, you’ll enjoy a real buzz crossing the finish line of an event you’ve dedicated time working towards.

Find a buddy: Having a friend to meet regularly and train alongside keeps you accountable, provides a social aspect to your activity and means you can motivate and support each other on tougher days.

It’s too cold: There’s no such thing as bad weather if you’re prepared for it. Cooler weather actually provides the best conditions for exercise. You only get cold if you’re standing still.

It’s too hot: In really hot conditions think about taking your activity indoors, or choose to get your exercise via a refreshing swim.
