Next Generation $20 Banknote Design Reveal: The Reserve Bank revealed last week, the design of the new $20 banknote, which will be released into general circulation in October 2019. As with the existing banknote, the new $20 features portraits of Mary Reibey and Reverend John Flynn. Governor Philip Lowe said of the new banknote: “Improved security and ease of recognition are important characteristics of the new $20 banknote. The same innovative security features from the previously released $5, $10 and $50 banknotes have been incorporated to help keep them secure from counterfeiting.” These features include a top-to-bottom clear window that contains dynamic elements, including a flying kookaburra that moves its wings and changes colour, and a reversing number ‘20’. The $20 features Acacia buxifolia and a Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). The new banknotes also has a ‘tactile’ feature to help people who are blind or who have low vision to distinguish between different denominations of banknotes. On the $20 banknote, this is three raised bumps on each of the long edges of the banknote.

A billion reasons to celebrate: Return and Earn has given NSW a great first year birthday present – one billion containers were returned through the scheme by December 2018. The NSW Minister for the Environment, Gabrielle Upton said she was pleased to see the program achieving these huge milestones. Gabrielle said that Return and Earn has been an outstanding success and changed the way people dispose of empty drink containers. More than half the drink containers brought into the marketplace by beverage suppliers (54 percent) are now being recovered, compared with the 32 percent that was being collected through yellow bins before Return and Earn kicked in. Minister Upton said the figures for Return and Earn’s first year speak for themselves. To learn more visit https://returnandearn.org.au.

Botanical Gardens Receives More Funding

February 28, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Organised sport has been undertaken at the Forbes Botanical Gardens Sports Fields for over 100 years with a variety of groups making use of this great facility.

Therefore another announcement for further funding of $178,000 for the Botanical Gardens made by Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack at Victoria Park on Monday was welcomed. This funding is on top of $150,000 funding from Council, $146,000 Asian Cup and $135,000 NSW government money. This will help fund upgrades to the grounds including new change rooms and toilets at the sportsground.

“For the first time facilities for the elderly and disabled will be available at the Botanical Gardens,” said Forbes Mayor, Phyllis Miller. “The grounds are used by over 5,000 people a year to attend sporting events held at these fields.”

Announcing the grant, Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack said the Infrastructure Grants provides funding for sport and recreation facilities such as these. The new amenities and change rooms are marked to be built this year.

The project benefits not only participants in soccer, athletics, cricket and touch football but with Forbes’ central location and the current popularity of the fields as a location for regional carnivals, the proposed upgrades will benefit clubs and participants from right across the Central West.

Forbes has one of the highest levels of participation in soccer by women in the Central Western NSW. The proposed new facility forms an integral part of plans to grow and develop female participation in soccer not only at Forbes but across the Central West NSW.

Huge Boost To Support Student Welfare And Mental Health: Every public high school across the Orange Electorate will have two dedicated experts to ensure students have access to vital mental health and wellbeing support. Nationals Candidate for Orange, Kate Hazelton said an $88 million statewide investment by the NSW Nationals will mean that every public high school student in the Orange Electorate will have access to highly-qualified mental health professionals that they can confidentially speak to about bullying, anxiety, stress or any other difficult issue they may face. Up to 100 additional fulltime school counsellors or psychologists, as well as 350 student support officers, will be employed across NSW public high schools. Importantly, these experts will have the ability to refer students who require greater assistance to mental health services. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro said the investment would provide vital support for communities in regional NSW.

Forbes Paves the Way Forward For Agriculture: Forbes Shire Council identified in 2017 the need for a strategy to manage how the Shire moves forward in the agricultural sector. GHD Consultants were commissioned to facilitate an Agricultural Strategy with the aim of driving continued growth across primary industries in the Forbes local government area and unlocking new market and growth opportunities. “The strategy is multi-faceted in its approach; considering land-use planning, land capability and water availability,” said Forbes Mayor, Phyllis Miller. Online surveys, targeted interviews and two community consultation workshops took place with the public to develop this strategy. A reference group worked closely with Council and GHD to formulate this document. On the 25th February, Forbes Shire Council along with Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack and NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair will launch the strategy at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange.

Mayoral Notes

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

It has been a very dusty week here in Forbes and one that seems to be a common occurrence these days. The seniors of Forbes have been celebrating the NSW Seniors Festival. The celebrations started last Friday at the Jemalong Retirement Village with afternoon tea and a few great old songs. This Sunday, 24th February the Seniors Variety Concert will take place in the Town Hall to complete the festival.

This Thursday we have the first sitting of Council for the year and an extra large Business Paper to get through. Just a reminder you can view the meeting on Facebook Live or come and sit in the chambers to see how the decisions are made.

The white picket fence around Grinstead Oval is really taking shape and looks amazing. It is so great to see the Farm Trade workers coming together to put the fence up and in time for the President’s Lunch next month. Our Drought Co-ordinator, Sally Downie has been working with them to ensure everyone can still meet the needs on-the-land as well as earn some money.

The Youth and Community Centre is currently undergoing minor renovations. This great little hall has so many users and the improvements are being made to accommodate the Forbes Toy Library and playgroup.

We can’t wait for Emma Pask’s performance at Town Hall this Friday night. Mitchell Conservatorium does bring some amazing artists to town and we should all support these acts, so more will come our way.

God Bless.

Your Mayor,
Phyllis Miller

Head Shave Fundraiser To Support Locals

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

A loyal Forbes resident all her life, Marg Stirling started feeling about 12 months ago the need to do her part for local women diagnosed with breast cancer.

The inspiration came during a time when Marg started frequenting the gym as part of a rehab program. She became aware of a group of ladies also visiting the gym that were there for breast cancer exercises. “Once I got involved with the ladies after seeing them as well as hearing of the others, I thought it would be nice to do something
to give back to them and others that might go through the same thing,” said Marg.

Last Monday, Marg’s inspiring initiative to help local women living with breast cancer, finally came to fruition when she was able to present a cheque to the value of $6,700 to Lachlan Health Services McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Dianne Green and Janice Cassidy of Cassidy’s Hair Salon in Parkes. These funds will be allocated towards material headwear (which can be quite expensive) and the local Wig Library, run by Janice.

The Wig Library services all people living around the Central West that is losing their hair because of cancer treatment. “People come to us to find a wig that suits them. We style it to suit their face and we also shampoo wigs that are worn very often. It’s all free of charge and they can have the wig as long as they need it,” said Janice.

As part of Marg’s fundraising efforts she organised a luncheon at the Forbes Inn in April last year where more than $900 was raised through ticket sales, a raffle and also generous donations.

The shaving of Marg’s hair was done at the Forbes Rugby Union Club as part of their Ladies Day held in June with a couple of hundred people bearing witness to Marg’s big moment. Before the shave, Marg’s hair was plaited in preparation to be used for a child’s wig.

“We had items donated from various businesses and people in town which was auctioned on the Ladies Day. Among the auction items was a signed Sydney Swans jersey, Forbes Rugby Union Club football, Mahlah Molloy print, a wine pack and many other items,” said Marg. The day raised a total of $5,393.

“I have just been amazed with people’s donations and their support in my raising funds for this cause. A big thank you to the Forbes Rugby Union Club, the Forbes Inn, the Forbes Credit Union and anyone else that donated to my fundraising efforts,” she said.

Forbes Showgirl Shines Through To Sydney Royal

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Showgirl, Sally Downie, moved a step closer to the state finals of the Land Royal Showgirl competition after being announced as a finalist in the Zone 6 Regional Showgirl Finals held in Young last Saturday evening.

Sally, along with 22 other hopefuls attended the ceremony hosted by the Young Show Society for the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW.

She was accompanied to the event by her partner David Turner and his grandmother, Elaine. Forbes Show President, Doug Nadin and numerous other Forbes Show Society members also came out to support Sally. The CWA evening branch sent a card and a donation, showing very much appreciated support to her.

“It was a great night! The Young Show Society did a great job of putting it on,” said Sally.

Sally’s win came very unexpected to her. “I’m shocked I got through but it was a nice surprise. If you had told me I’d be doing this a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed it! The whole process wasn’t even daunting this time. I enjoyed it and have certainly learnt a lot from the process, especially how to use my voice to stand up for what I believe in,” she said.

“The girls I met were all amazing and are doing great things. They have a lot of passion for their community, so I think any of them could have gone through. It’s an honour and I hope I can do Forbes proud and uphold our strong Showgirl history,” said Sally.

In answer to how she will prepare for the next big round: “I don’t really know how to prepare. I know I’ve got some shopping to do as jeans and boots probably won’t quite cut it. I guess I’m kept well in the loop with what’s going on with my role at Council and I’m always listening to the Country Hour and so forth, so that helps.

“I just really want to use the opportunity as a way to promote Forbes. To show that the Showgirl movement isn’t a beauty pageant but an important part of our local shows and a way for young women to be involved in their community and learn life skills. Also for me, it is a space to talk about mental health in regional/rural areas,” she said.

Sally grew up on a family dairy farm and completed her schooling in Forbes. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Agriculture at CSU. She is passionate about agriculture and helping local farmers through tough times. Her aim is to see the industry prosper and continue to develop.

Sally was recently appointed by the Forbes Shire Council as the Drought Coordinator and spent the weekend before
last in Canberra promoting her Grassroots Blueprint initiative to political leaders.

Dubbo’s Showgirl, Josie Anderson and Coonamble’s Emily Ryan were also selected.

The state finals will take place throughout the course of the Sydney Royal Easter Show starting on 12th April. It is the second consecutive year that Forbes will have their Showgirl representing our town at the prestigious event.

According to an excerpt from the Rules and Regulations of Showgirl Competitions, “The aim of the Showgirl Competition is to find a person most suited to represent young rural women of NSW. The young lady must be articulate and presentable with a pleasant personality. She will be required to meet a wide variety of people
and should be able to converse intelligently about Australia in general and in particular her own district.”

Recognising Our Sporting Heroes

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association (SOYA) are delighted with the quality of the nominations they have received for the 2018 awards with the annual Presentation Dinner to be held on Saturday, 16th March at the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club.

The Forbes SOYA is a small yet hard working committee dedicated to recognising and celebrating the accomplishments of our local sports men and women as well as administrators and officials. Sport is an important= part of life and the awards are an opportunity to pay tribute to the athletes who excel in their chosen sport and thank and show appreciation to the many volunteers who give their time to ensure that children and adults of all ages have access to some of the best sporting facilities and competitions in NSW.

The awards being contested include the Junior and Senior Sportsperson, All Rounder, Coach/Trainer, Referee/Umpire/ Official, Administrator, Team and of course the Forbes Sportsperson and Runner Up for 2018.

The overall winner of the Central West Credit Union Monthly Achievers Award will also be announced on the night along with the President’s Award, Phillip Adams Encouragement Award, Merit Awards, School and Special Sports Awards and the Forbes Netball Association Terry Wade Award. The calibre of the nominations received for all the awards was of a very high standard making the job of the independent judging panel extremely difficult.

This year the special guest is Alana Thomas, former Australian Rugby Union player and Australian Wallaroo Development Coach. Alana hails from Glen Innes but has a local connection. Her career in Rugby Union commenced with the Forbes Platypi when she lived and worked in Forbes over 10 years ago and she was the winner of the Forbes Sportsperson of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Alana is looking forward to being part of the presentation and sharing her experiences representing NSW and Australia as well as her current role as coach.

The SOYA Awards would not be possible without the generous support of local businesses, allowing Forbes to be one of the last country towns in New South Wales who host a separate sporting awards ceremony.

Congratulations to all nominees and the SOYA committee look forward to seeing you all, your families and the nominating sporting organisations when the 2018 winners are announced on 16th March.

Providing More Choice In Palliative Care

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Thousands of families with loved ones who suffer from a life-limiting illness will receive more choice about the help they need from an additional 100 palliative care nurses at refurbished facilities.

Nationals Candidate for Orange, Kate Hazelton said that $45 million palliative care investment has been made possible by strong economic management.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure patients and their loved ones have access to the best quality palliative care at the best possible care facilities,” she said. The investment is on top of a $100 million package for palliative care that was announced as part of the 2017-18 Budget, which is already delivering more palliative care nurses and community-based palliative care services.

The additional 100 palliative care nurses will work in hospitals, palliative care facilities, and in communities and homes to ensure patients can access the care they need, in the setting they choose.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro said 64 of the 100 palliative care nurses would be assigned to regional and rural NSW. Hospitals in the Western NSW local health district will be assigned six nurses.

The commitment also includes $10 million for improvements to existing palliative care facilities across the State.

Local Communities Central In Newell Highway Study

February 21, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Local expertise to boost freight efficiency and road safety, as well as flood preparation, are front and centre as the Australian Government’s Newell Highway Corridor Strategy gets under way, with PwC Australia selected to deliver the study.

Deputy Prime Minister, Nationals’ Leader and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack said the strategy will provide a comprehensive picture of the current performance and future challenges along the Newell Highway.

“The Federal Liberal and Nationals’ Government is investing $2 million to the Newell Highway Corridor Strategy, because we know this highway is the backbone of country NSW,” said Michael.

“A better Newell Highway will mean more competitive agricultural and mining sectors, thanks to a more reliable freight network through regional NSW. This will in turn support the growth of regional communities along the length of the Newell Highway,” he said.

Efficient outcomes in the movement of regional freight, as well as challenges such as road safety and flooding, and the relationship between the Newell Highway and Inland Rail will be key to its inquiries. The strategy will be able to be used to inform the investment decisions of both federal and state governments.

Michael said community, local government and industry involvement will be central to the strategy, ensuring the Government proceeds based on the best transport and economic data and a thorough understanding of communities and businesses’ needs and expectations.

“Many towns, farmers and small businesses throughout the Central West, Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and Western NSW rely on the Newell to connect product from paddock to plate – that’s why we will work with communities along the Newell to ensure it continues to be at the heart of country NSW,” said Michael.

“Bland Shire Councillor, Tony Lord and Moree Plains Shire Mayor, Katrina Humphries – two experienced and respected local Councillors from either end of the Highway – will head the community consultation to encourage locals to get involved and have their say.

“A number of workshops will be held along the corridor at different locations so vital local knowledge can inform outcomes and recommendations of the strategy.”

The Australian Government is fully funding the Newell Highway Corridor Strategy. Further details about the Newell Highway Corridor Strategy, including its objectives, can be found at https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/.

Diabetes Wellness

February 14, 2019 by Maggi Barnard

Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies are focussing on diabetes wellness during February and March. “If you are living with diabetes, let’s talk about how your medicines and blood glucose monitoring are working for you and fitting in with your daily routine,” said Flannery’s pharmacist, Tracey Edwards.

“Your pharmacist can sit down for a one-on-one consultation with you to discuss your medicines,” said Tracey. “This process is called a diabetes medication review and helps the patient get a clearer understanding of their medicines and provides an opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns they may have regarding their medications.”

If you would like a diabetes medication review you can come into either pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist.

It also helps to have a good system in place that works for you when it comes to monitoring your blood glucose levels. You can talk to the pharmacists at Life Pharmacy and Flannery’s Pharmacy about your blood glucose meter, monitoring, strips or lancets.

Flannery’s Pharmacy will be hosting a Diabetes Awareness Day with free blood glucose testing on Thursday, 28th February.

“If you’d like to find out more about diabetes feel free to call in on the day and speak to one of our pharmacists or registered nurse,” said Tracey.
