Teddy Bear’s Picnic Fun At Lions Park

The annual Forbes Teddy Bear’s Picnic was held at Lions Park last Saturday, October 19th.

The free community event formed the Forbes Shire Council’s celebrations of Children’s Week.

“It was yet another amazing Teddy Bear’s Picnic this year, with over 2000 people at- tending this great community event,” said Forbes Shire Council’s Community and Tourism Manager, Nina Hooper.

“In tough times such as the current drought, Teddies is a perfect low cost, fam- ily friendly event for everyone to enjoy. Of course, the event wouldn’t have been the success that it was without the help we received from Maree Yapp from Schools As Community Centres and Danielle Welsh from Forbes North Public School.”

The family fun event saw over 30 community groups and organisations attend to hold free activities for the youth and children of the community and surrounding areas. Activities included pedal boats, crafts, face painting, emergency services talk and displays, 2 jumping castles and a number of food vendors.

There were also live performances by Mainly Music, the Forbes North Dance Troupes and Kristen’s Dance Studio.

Children were invited to bring along their favourite teddy bear, with many participating in the Teddy Bear Parade on the day. Each child received a token for participating. Thanks to Forbes Toy Library and Bunnings Forbes, there were also lucky door prizes up for grabs.

The event was proudly supported by Forbes Shire Council, schools and community centres.

Taste On Templar Fundraiser

Menus are finalised and local produce has been sourced for the Taste on Templar fundraiser.

Throughout the evening, the Taste On Templar committee is pleased to showcase local products and regional wines, boutique beer and local entertainment. “Taste On Templar offers guests the opportunity to dine outside, listen to our fabulous guest speaker, Rebecca Walsh from Ronald Mc- Donald House and dance in the street,” said Marg Duggan, Chair of the Business Chamber.

Pop ups will be dotted along Templar Street featuring local and regional wines, boutique beer, cider, soft drinks and water. There will also be local chefs producing a three course dinner using local produce and products from within a 100km radius of Forbes.

The fundraiser will be raising money for Ronald McDonald House in Orange and is on Saturday, 9th November, starting at 6.30pm.

Forbes Riverside Community Garden Launches Annual Competitions

The Forbes Riverside Community Garden has launched its 2019 annual competitions with winners to be announced at the annual Open Day.

Entry forms with all the competition details are now available on the Forbes Shire Council website, at the Community Garden in Reymond Street between the hours of 9am and 11am Monday to Saturday, or by emailing forbescommunitygarden@outlook.com. Entry is free and there are great prizes to be won.

There are two competitions, Best Vegetable Garden and Best Scarecrow. Best Vegetable Garden is a vegetable garden which is located within the 80 Kilometre speed zone of the town of Forbes and Forbes Shire villages. Entries close on Thursday, 8th November. Best Scarecrow is judged by popular vote on the morning of the Open Day which is 16th November. Entries close on Thursday, 14th November.

The winners of both competitions will be announced at the Community Garden Open Day at 2pm on Saturday, 16th November. Head down between 10am and 1.30pm to vote for the Best Scarecrow in each category as the winners are awarded by popular vote on the day.

There will be stalls with various products for sale, including plants and vegies from the community garden. Also available, for a small price, will be morning tea, cold drinks and a sausage sizzle.

Entrants in the vegetable competition will need to be home on a pre-arranged date and time to make their garden available for the judges to visit.

More farmers to get a hand with drought: Horticultural farmers with permanent plantings can now access the On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate in four states and the ACT. Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT have signed up to the extension. Minister for Water Resources David Littleproud said the rebate will help save trees and vines. “This helps secure long-term prosperity in horticultural regions,” Minister Littleproud said. “Trees and vines can take years to produce fruit. Growers shouldn’t have to start over once the drought breaks.”

An additional $13.2 million in funding is being made available to make sure demand for the scheme is met. “This will let eligible growers claim the rebate on installing new bores or desilting dams. This will both make better use of water and make water more available across valuable permanent plantings.”

“Growers in drought affected areas can claim 25 per cent of expenses, up to $25,000 on eligible projects started after 30 June 2019. This will both improve water access now and make better use of farm water in the future.” The scheme can be accessed through the relevant state or territory agricultural department.

Lachlan Valley Fishing Club Gone Fishing Day: The Lachlan Valley Fishing Club will be hosting a Gone Fishing Day this Sunday, 20th October. It will be a carp-a- thon and runs from 9am to 12pm. Funding For Wyangala Dam Upgrade Welcomed

Central NSW Councils have welcomed the announcement of a joint investment of $650 million by the federal and state governments to upgrade Wyangala Dam.

“The region supports investment in long term options that offer substantive improvements in security and reliability of water for town, agricultural, industrial and mining needs,” says Cr John Medcalf, Chair of Central NSW Councils Joint Organisation and Mayor of Lachlan Shire.

The proposed upgrade of Wyangala Dam will see the dam wall raised by 10 metres to increase its capacity by 650 gigalitres.

Since the millennium drought exposed the vulnerability of the Lachlan catchment, Central NSW Councils have advocated for increased storage for the region. “While we have immediate water security concerns, the augmentation of Wyangala has the potential to provide increased reliability and security of supply for towns in the Lachlan River catchment including Cowra, Forbes, Parkes, Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo, as well as flood management benefits into the future,” he says.

“The long-term reliability of water supply is a major factor in having the confidence to plan ahead, invest and run a profitable business. In the face of the drought, we need this to ensure our local communities are sustainable and thrive into the future. The reality is that with the right storage and pipe network there is plenty of water for town water supplies for Central NSW communities and to enable substantive growth in high value agriculture.”

“At the moment, our focus is very much on working with the state government on solutions to get our communities through to the next drought breaking rains,” says Cr Med- calf.”

Racing And Glamour At Forbes Spring Races

The Forbes Jockey Club hosted a successful race day when the Forbes Spring Races was held at the Racecourse on Saturday.

It was a six race meet, headlined by the 2019 Forbes Spring Cup, which was Race 5 in the program and proudly sponsored by Lachlan Ready Mix. The 2019 Forbes Spring Cup was won by 6 year old bay gelding, Bring A Beer Along. The gelding was ridden by Dubbo based jockey, Ken Dunbar and trained by Narromine’s Wayne Collison.

The ever popular Fashions on the Field was hotly contested with a total prize pool of over $3000. There were five categories to cover a range of entries. Winner of the Tiny Tots (3-8 years) category was Tui Rivera from Condobolin. Winner of the Junior

(8-16 years) category was Stella Bull from Forbes. Winner of the Cutting Edge category, which is for individual style and distinctiveness, was Katie Ralph from Forbes. Winner of the Most Elegant Lady category was Melissa Parslow from Forbes. Winner of the Best Dressed Gent category was Mitchell Andrews from Forbes.

Forbes Jockey Club would like to send a huge thank you to all their sponsors, particularly major sponsors Lachlan Ready Mix and Independent Cement & Lime. Without the support of sponsors, this race day couldn’t happen.

The Club is planning to host an even bigger and better event next year.

Teddy Bears Picnic Is Back For 2019

If you go down to Lions Park on Saturday 19 October, you are sure of a big surprise! The popular Teddy Bear’s Picnic is returning this year and on a Saturday.

It truly is a day for the whole family to enjoy. This year’s event will include over 28 activities and rides for the children, including a crash course, bandage a bear, face painting and unicorn land, to name a few. “We are overwhelmed by the success of previous picnics and cannot wait to bring our biggest and best to the community so far,” says Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM.

Taste of Greece, Sweet Three Vintage Van and BBQ by Forbes Lions Club will all be on site. Coffee by Larz and an ice cream van will also be available to supply treats for big and little kids alike.

Children are asked to bring along their favourite teddy to participate in the Teddy Bear Parade. Each child will receive a token for participating. Make sure you have your name tag on your bear in case he or she accidently gets lost.

The musical performances on the day will feature Mainly Music, Maddi Collits and Georgia Sideris who will get the children ready to have some fun. Both Forbes North Dance Troupe and Kristen’s Dance Studio will also perform.

“Food and refreshments will be available on the day or bring a picnic,” says Mayor Miller. “It is a lovely event the whole family can enjoy for little to no cost.”

Teddy Bears Picnic forms Council’s celebrations of Children’s Week and the picnic starts at 10am and concludes at 2pm.

Conveyancing

Buying and selling land can be fraught with difficulties and there are constantly changing laws.

The vendor (seller) needs to have:

• All swimming pool owners are required to have a Certificate of Registration of compliance from the local council attached to the contract.

• The Federal Government requires owners selling property for $750,000 or more need a Foreign Investment Clearance Certificate from the ATO whether you are a foreigner or not.

• The Land Registry Services now require most conveyancing transactions to settle via electronic settlements (i.e. PEXA).

• The law requires all auctions of land and all sales of a house and residential blocks of land (even by private sale) to have pre- prepared contracts for sale of land, re- quiring inclusions of searches, Land Tax Certificates, zoning certificates, sewage diagrams or particulars of registration of septic services, plus more depending on the type of land to be sold.

• Residences need to have a smoke alarm, plus more…

The purchaser (buyer) needs to have:

• Finance: sufficient money in the bank or an organised loan, plus a deposit (usually 10% of the purchase price).

• A pest and building inspection prior to entering a contract, plus a survey of the land in some circumstances.

• Check what chattels (moveables) the vendor is including in the contract.

• Check whether the purchase price includes GST or not. Most house and farm sales are exempt from GST, but still check.

Lions Park Safety

In the interests of public safety, Forbes Shire Council are initiating a temporary exclusion zone around the new container café in Lions Park.

“We are really pleased that so many tourists and members of the community are keen to enjoy this wonderful space by the lake,” says Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane. “But we need to ensure that people are able to do this safely.”

Exclusion works in the park will include the erection of temporary bollards in front of the container café to separate pedestrian traffic from the road. Lions Park will also be extensively signposted with safety and shared zone signs.

The park features play equipment for children and the temptation for them to run over to this equipment is high. The BBQ area and new fishing platform share the space and the public need to be on the look-out for children in this vicinity.

“Our parks must remain safe places for the whole family,” says Steve Loane. “Cars don’t really belong in our parks, except to set up and pack down for events and markets. I’d encourage the community to relax and unwind in our beautiful open spaces, such as Lions Park and leave the car parked outside the park, or leave it a

Community Supports Boys To The Bush Camp

Another successful Boys to the Bush camp was held across three locations last week, Forbes, Howlong and Lake Cargelligo.

Half of the boys attending the camps came from the Forbes and Parkes area, with many now regular attendees. The boys visited local farms, learning about shearing/ crutching, went fishing for cod, kayaked along the Lachlan and trekked through Nangar National Park.

The Forbes camp was coordinated by Jared DeMamiel and he was assisted by lo- cals Jarrad and Sam Tyack. Local legends Bailey Hartwig and Grant Acheson also gave up their time to spend some time with the boys on the camp.

Forbes Camp coordinator Jared DeMamiel was delighted with how successful and enjoyable the camp was for the local

boys that attended. “I’m blown away by the support we have received. From local businesses, farmers and volunteers, it’s truly been a team effort in making this camp such a huge success.”

The camp was well supported by the Forbes community, with goods donated by Flint St Butchery, Bernardi’s IGA and Forbes Bakehouse. Members of the Forbes Men’s Shed and Tyack and Maguire families cooked delicious meals for the camp and Blake from Bernardi’s IGA delivered a box of marshmallows for toasting on the fire. Darren and Carly Cowan supplied the venue for the camp.

Boys to the Bush will continue to conduct camps in Forbes thanks to the support of the community and plan to start MENtoring programs in the near future.
