Iris Farm Now Open: The Narromine Iris Farm is now open for the flowering season. Forbes Please Stand Clear

Please stand clear of the medical retrieval helicopters when in Forbes.

The Forbes Health Service is urging the community to stand clear when the Medical Retrieval helicopters are landing and taking off at the Health Service.

Lachlan Health Service’s Manager Liz Mitchell said, “The Medical Retrieval helicopters are an essential part of health care in rural and remote areas.”

“It can be exciting to watch the helicopters land or take off, but by-standers can put their safety, and the operation of the helicopters themselves, at risk if they’re standing too close.”

“The Helicopters are a fast and efficient means to transfer critically ill or injured patients to larger health facilities. It’s important we get patients into the helicopter and on their way to care as quickly as possible. The helicopters are heavy machinery and pose a safety risk to any people around the helipad during the landing or take-off procedure”.

The helipad is NOT public land. It is protected by the Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901, Members of the public must not be within 20 metres of the edge of the helipad during landing or take-off and must not approach the helicopter until the rotor blades are at a standstill, and only with the Helicopter pilot’s consent. People can be charged with trespass if they interfere with the helipad and/or helicopter. All vehicles must be parked at least 25 metres from the edge of the helipad. This restriction is clearly marked on the road.

The exclusion zone is to prevent injury to the helicopter crew and members of the public as the wind created during landing and take-off is very strong. Debris can also be sucked up into the rotor blades and cause damage to the helicopter which is a safety risk to the crew.

“We don’t want to see anyone suffer un- necessary injuries, so please follow the rules and keep yourself and others out of danger,” Liz said.

Changes To Slow Down Rule

Motorists are reminded changes to the rule requiring them to slow down when passing stationary emergency vehicles came into force in NSW last week.

From 26 September:

Drivers will no longer need to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or over.
Drivers will continue to be required to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 80km/h or under.
The rule will be expanded to include tow trucks and breakdown assistance vehicles which are displaying yellow flashing lights while stopped on the road.

On roads with speed limits of 90km/h or over drivers will need to:

• Slow to a speed which is safe and reasonable for the circumstances.

• Give sufficient space between their vehicle and the tow truck, breakdown assistance or emergency vehicle, as well as any people on the road.

• On multi-lane roads drivers must change lanes to keep the lane next to the stationary vehicle vacant if it is safe to do so.

Flannery’s Celebrates

Recently, Flannery’s Pharmacy celebrated their Guild Pharmacy of the Year win with the Forbes community.

“We wanted to reward our customers for their loyalty and support and decided to host a week long celebration,” said Business Manager Debbie Prior.

Flannery’s Pharmacy hosted various promotions throughout the week, including a nail bar, mini makeovers and blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. “We also had some special guests instore including Di Gill from the Rural Mental Health team and a representative from Webstercare who talked to our customers about medication management,” said Debbie.

The week culminated with a special fundraising morning tea for CanAssist on Friday 20th September. “The team at Flannery’s baked some delicious goodies and ROKFM were instore interviewing customers and team members,” said Debbie. “We were also joined by the CanAssist committee who work so hard to raise funds for local cancer sufferers”. The team at Flannery’s were very proud to raise $596 for Forbes CanAssist.

“Our customers also received free giveaways throughout the week,” said Debbie. “And everyone who used their LifeClub card went into the draw to win one of six gift bas- kets and a $100 LifeClub prize.”

Lucky winners of the gift baskets were Cloe Longobardi, Ellen Dehn, Chris Nicholson, Sarah Turner, Harold Collits and Robin Schall with Dianne Knox-Niven winning the $100 LifeClub prize.

“I would like to congratulate all our winners and to thank all our lovely customers for their ongoing support and loyalty to our Pharmacy,” said Debbie.

Thank You Dogs

Mental illness remains a heavy and wildly unspoken topic and through the connection people have with their dogs particularly in testing times, Thank You Dogs a new social media campaign aims to make the conversation about mental illness less cumbersome for many by incorporating their best mates of the fury kind into their stories.

Rural wedding photographer, Edwina Robertson, is the content creator for the project and said it’s all about helping people open up a little more.

“On the farm, your dog is probably your best worker, your best mate and they might just be your best listener too,” said Edwina If you have a story that you’d like to share about a tough time you’ve experienced and how your favourite furry friend helped you in getting through that time, then Thank You Dogs would like to hear from you. Rural Landfill Tip Time Changes

Forbes Shire Council would like to advise the public that the Bedgerabong and Garema Landfills will have new opening and closing times from the 2nd October 2019.

Bedgerabong will be open to the public from 1.30pm – 4.30pm on Wednesdays and 9am – 12 noon on a Sunday.

Garema will be open Wednesdays 8am – 11am and Sundays from 1.30pm – 4.30pm.

“With Spring in the air we encourage residents to do a little spring cleaning around their homes. It is important residents take steps to reduce the risk of fire around their properties,” says Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM.

“The weather forecast for summer is for a long dry one this year, so everyone should be preparing their homes and yards now,” continued Mayor Miller.

“Simple things like cleaning out your gutters, pruning bushes and cutting overhanging branches around your home can make the world of difference,” Mayor Miller says.

“The Bush fires have already started and it’s only September, so everyone please start preparing for this fire season, now,” urged Mayor Miller.

Each respective landfill will only accept residential waste from their respective villages and surrounds. For commercial, construction and demolition waste, please use the Daroobalgie Landfill in Forbes. This facility is open 7 days a week 8.30am – 5pm.

Residents are reminded there is also a Chemical Cleanout scheduled for 17 October for residents to be able to drop off unwanted chemical based waste such as; old paint tins, garden chemicals, fluorescent tubes and household cleaners to the Council Depot between the hours of 1-4pm.

Senepol Sale Results For 2019

The annual 5 Star Senepol Sale was held at CQLX Gracemere, in Qld on Monday.

Sarah and Clayton Maynard, Southern Star Rural, Canowindra sold 6 bulls through the 5 Star Sale this year. Southern Star Rural managed the top price Senelais (Senepol/Charolais) bull at $12,000 and also the top priced Senegus (Senepol/Angus) bull at $12,000.

There were 54 Bulls were sold on the day with an average of $7,425, a top of $17,000 and a 100% clearance rate.

Forbes Youth and Community Centre New Playground: Are you looking for the perfect birthday party location? Why not try the Forbes Youth and Community Centre. Soft fall has been installed and the renovations are now complete in the new playground. This project was funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Grant and Forbes Shire Council.

Bus to Les Miserables in Parkes: Neighbourhood Central in Forbes is organising a bus to Parkes for the Les Miserable show on 6th October for the 2pm matinee for those who have no transport. Places are limited, call into the HACC Centre at 7 Harold Street to register for this trip.

Pool Opening: Dust off the swimmers Forbes as the Forbes Olympic Pool will open for Summer on Saturday 5th October.

Jarrod Amery Named As 2020 Nuffield Scholar

Four of Australia’s leading grain growers focused on a more innovative, resilient and sustainable sector, have been awarded Grains Research and Development (GRDC) supported Nuffield Farming Scholarships for 2020.

Included in these four is Jarrod Amery from Forbes, who will research what it takes to build and maintain a successful farm business and achieve a sustainable Return on Assets Managed (ROAM).

As owner of Amery Ag, an innovative 2,300-hectare farming operation, Jarrod produces wheat, canola and barley, and manages around 4,000 ewes as part of the business’s annual livestock trading program.

“We strive to make every hectare work; earning the right to expand our business. As a young farmer myself, and with a quarter of the agricultural workforce between 18 to 35, there is a need to equip our future farmers with the tools to grow their businesses and the industry as a whole,” Jarrod said.

“On my study program, I plan to visit leading farm businesses around the world, to understand the common threads of success, including how to achieve a sustainable work/life balance, pathways to expansion and diversification, as well as how to encourage new entrants into farming.”

Jarrod will receive a $30,000 bursary to research new agricultural technologies and techniques and visit leading farm enterprises around the world on a 16-week travel program. Travelling throughout major agricultural producing countries, including China and the United States, Jarrod plans to share his findings with peers, to help build a culture within Australian farming that promotes entrepreneurship and knowledge sharing.
