Registrations For ‘Free Cuppa’ 2018

September 28, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Organisers of the award-winning ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme are inviting local businesses to register for phase eight of the driver fatigue awareness campaign which will run from 1st March to 31st May next year.

Drivers are encouraged to stop at participating businesses for a free cup of tea or coffee to take a break from driving.

Through the scheme partnerships are formed between participating councils and local businesses. The councils provide marketing and resources while the businesses provide free tea and coffee.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, says that the scheme is a win for everyone involved.

“Participating businesses have reported an almost 30% increase in sales and with almost three-quarters of vehicles participating in the scheme containing two or more passengers it was clear that other purchases were evident above the driver’s free cuppa.

“The scheme will operate in at least 24 local government areas in western and south western NSW stretching from the Victorian border to the Queensland border.”

Since its 256 participating businesses has given away 6,784 free cuppas in 187 cities, towns and villages in NSW, which included 17 participating businesses across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Council areas.

The closing date for registrations is Friday, 6th October. Contact Melanie Suitor on 6861 2364 or Melanie.Suitor@parkes.nsw.gov.au

Fun At Wirrinya Family Picnic Day

September 28, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Families had a great day out at the annual Wirrinya Family Picnic Day last Sunday.

Unlike the previous year’s wash-out, this year’s almost 200 picnic-goers were blessed with beautiful weather. The event was held in conjunction with the official opening of the revamped tennis courts at The Shed in Wirrinya.

There was more than enough fun to go around for all the enthusiastic children and grown-ups with this year’s theme the Commonwealth Games. From designing a medal to other events such as billy boil, paper plane flying, smash the jaffa, running races, coin toss and gumboot relay, family members had an action-packed day.

Wirrinya Progress and Sports Association president Monica Langfield said: “The Wirrinya Family Picnic Day has been going for at least 75 years. It’s a chance for the community to get together and have a bit of fun.

“The tennis courts were built around 1930 and they have always been played. We were lucky enough to get funding to contribute towards the new fence. Everyone is really excited about it and believes the courts have never looked so good.”

MP for Orange, Philip Donato, also attended the picnic and partook in some of the day’s events. Philip officially opened the new tennis court fence constructed by SLR Contracting Forbes.

“We were glad to support the local community’s application for funding under the Community Building Partnership grant to replace the old fencing around the tennis court. It’s a great focal point for the local community and brings people together,” said Philip.

Other sponsors who helped were GrainCorp and Evolution Mining.

Enjoyed by many generations over the years, the picnic day is a significant event in the Wirrinya community calendar.

The event was opened with a smoking ceremony followed by the flag raising ceremony.

There were also Aboriginal games and song and dance workshops to help better explain the language for attendees.

Rhonda Ryan specialist trauma councillor and volunteer for the event said, “We are here today to share culture and knowledge. The theme this year for NAIDOC is songlines and language. Today we would like to share the language.”

Rotary Connection Brings Seeds Of Hope

September 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Town Hall was recently packed to capacity with citizens who had come to hear the Seeds of Hope Choir from Ndola, a large city in Zambia.

The choir was composed of teenaged students of the Grace Academy, which is run by the Canadian charity, Seeds of Hope. The audience responded enthusiastically to the singing of songs in the student’s native language, accompanied by clapping, dancing and drums.

What many in the audience may not have known when they entered the Town Hall is that the students who sang and danced had all been affected by AIDS in their native country. Some of them told their stories. Most are orphans who have lost their parents to the disease, which had also been passed on to them.

Because of the improvement in AIDS treatment, they will now live normal lives with the help of Seeds of Hope which pays for this treatment and most hoped to become professionals who will help their country rise out of poverty and disease. They sang their hearts out in thanks for the future they can look forward to, thanks to Seeds of Hope and those who donate to it.

Many in the audience would not have realised also that the choir made only a few appearances on the East Coast of Australia, and two of these were Forbes and Parkes.

The Rotary Club of Forbes has helped the Zambian orphanage by sponsoring Daniel Greef, a policeman based in Parkes. Daniel’s expenses on his three visits to Ndola have been partly funded by Forbes Rotary, with the rest funded out of his own pocket. Daniel has been part of a team which has constructed classrooms and dormitories for Grace Academy.

If you wish to know more please contact the Rotary Club Forbes Secretary, Christine Hawke on 0409 661 358 or Google Seeds of Hope Australia.

Industrial Law…Payslips

Is your employer complying with the Fair Work Act and its regulations in providing payslips with the correct information.

Payslips are required to disclose:

• the employer’s name and ABN;

• the employee’s name;

• the date of payment and pay period;

• the gross and net amount of payment;

• any loadings, monetary allowances, bonuses, incentive based payments, penalty rates, or other separately identifiable entitlement paid;

Payslips maybe sent electronically to the employee provided it complies with the above and the employee agrees to such electronic posting.

Employers are also required to keep records of this information for at least seven years and a Fair Work Inspector has the right to inspect such records without any search warrant.

Prepare Now For Safe Summer Swimming

September 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Spring is upon us and it won’t be long before thoughts turn to summer and swimming, but is your pool safe?

Forbes Shire Council is urging residents to review their pool safety before summer arrives.

Forbes Shire Council’s Acting General Manager Max Kershaw said it was vital to ensure your pool has a compliant barrier. Pool gates need to be self-closing and the gap between the bottom of the barrier and the ground should be no more than 100mm.

“It is also very important that you check for bushes, vegetation and other climbable objects located in close proximity to the pool barrier and take appropriate action to reduce this risk,” said Max.

Portable and inflatable pools also have barrier requirements where they can be filled to a depth of 300mm or greater, however spas are exempt if they have a lockable cover.

Inadequate supervision is a factor in 59% of drownings and Max said supervision was vital to reducing drowning death.

“Pool barriers can and do reduce the risk but the most important safety measure is to ensure you are always supervising people in the pool, especially children,”Max said.

Grace And Charm

September 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Local woman, Grace Allen was sashed as the new Forbes Showgirl last Friday night. However, she hasn’t had time to bask in the splendour of winning the title. Instead, Grace is already back on duty fulfilling her role as a nurse in ICU at the Orange Hospital.

Grace was born and bred in Forbes and lived on their family property until she moved to Orange for work. Her goals for the future are to complete the Critical Care program through Orange Health. She is also looking forward to give it her all as the proud representative of Forbes at the zone judging held next February in Blayney.

Grace entered the Showgirl competition to ensure that the event would continue in future and that one day her children could have the same experiences as what she did at the shows.

Whilst representing Forbes as the Miss Showgirl, Grace is looking forward to promoting the show and getting everyone excited about the 2018 Forbes Show. She is also eager to meet up with the other Showgirl ambassadors at the etiquette course in January.

Are You Happy With The Rebate Your Health Fund Pays For Physio?

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Recent research by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) shows that many of the major Australian health funds have not substantially increased their rebate for seeing some physiotherapists in more than a decade. The APA has said that this is “inequitable and unfairly pressures patients into the health insurer’s selection of physiotherapist, despite choice being a core tenet of the Australian private health system.” Preferred provider schemes limit your freedom to choose the physiotherapist that is best able to treat their specific injury or condition.

The APA advises that when looking for a health fund that is right for you, you should look for one that not only meets your needs and provides good rebates for the services that you need but one that offers flexibility and allows you to see the physiotherapist that you want to see should you require their services.

The preferred provider schemes offered by health funds make no distinction between the level of experience or qualifications of your treating practitioner. The rebate you receive per consultation is the same whether you were treated by a new graduate on their  first day of work, or by someone like myself with an APA Sports Physio title, Masters degree and over 20 years of private practice experience. I am not part of any preferred provider scheme because I believe that, to achieve the best health outcomes, insurers should provide higher rebates for more experienced and qualified physiotherapists and they should allow you your choice of physiotherapist without you being financially disadvantaged. For the fitness of you.
