Bogan Gate CWA News

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

After having a relaxing break from meetings and spending time celebrating Christmas and watching the tennis and cricket, Bogan Gate CWA were pleased to have eight members present at their February meeting.

President Marion McIntyre welcomed Maria Buchanan to the meeting and Gail McKay gave the thought ‘A joyful heart makes a cheerful face’.

The branch has much planned for this year, which includes the hosting of the Oxley Group Handicraft/Land Cookery Day on Tuesday, 6th March.

They will again be hosting the annual Bridge Day between Forbes, Parkes and Condobolin on Sunday, 15th April. They are also very pleased to welcome back to Bogan Gate, the Orange Male Voice Choir appearing on Sunday, 3rd June at 1.30pm.

Planning for this event is well underway and many visitors to town wanting to hear some wonderful singers are expected.

Although it seems like busy times ahead, there will always be lots of laughs and friendship and some hard work.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 15th March at 1.30pm at the hall and any new visitors are most welcome to join.

Golf Fun In The Sun

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s 18-Hole Stableford, sponsored by Forbes Bus Lines was played in good sunshine and yielded many good scores from the 67 players.

The A-Division winner was Michael Wood who scored 42 points, having completed the back-9 in 1-under. Only slightly behind was Laurie O’Connor, who similarly scored well on the back-9 to finish with 40 points.

The B-Division went to Richard Smith with 44 points. Close behind was Joshua Coulthurst with 43, which could have been better if he had scored a point on the dreaded 7th hole.

The ball sweep went to 36 on count back, going to: 44 – R Smith; 43 – J Coulthurst; 42 – M Wood; 40 – L O’Connor, N Duncan, B Thomas; 39 – P Dawson; 38 – S McAlister, S Bate, M Collits, P Pymont, J Maloy; 37 – T Griffiths, Martin Woods, C Alley, M Spice; 36 – P Barnes, S Kirkman, D Rhodes. The NTP’s went to: 1st – Mike Wood, 18th – Bob Borger.

The big event of the weekend was the second running of the FGC Par-3 Championships, sponsored by Brine Cure. A field of 41 players fought for prizes in Club and Social categories.

The Club Men winners were: A Grade winner – Phil Duke (41 c/b); runner-up – R Taylor (41). B Grade winner – L O’Connor (46); runner-up – B Carpenter (51). C Grade winner – D Williams (37); runner-up – B Slack- Smith (42).

The Club Ladies winners were: J Cripps (41 c/b); Runner-up – D Dingwall (41).

The Social winners were: first prize – Mark Webb (55), second prize – Scott Webb (67) and third prize – Veronica Rebellato (75).

The CWDGA Pennants played the 3rd round last weekend at Cowra. Our teams had mixed results, with the 1’s (3/2) and 4’s (4/1) winning while the 2’s (4/1) and 3’s (4/1) lost.

In a one-in-a-million event, one of Niel Duncan’s fairway shots was struck in mid-flight by another ball played by a person on the adjacent fairway. It took some time to find each ball, with more amazement as to where they had finished up.

On Sunday, 4th March we shall be hosting the CWDGA Pennants here. Come out and see some really good golfers do their thing. The course will be closed during this play, but open in the afternoon.

Opportunity Knocking At Your Door

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

12 Cross Street, Forbes is sure to impress in your portfolio with huge potential situated so close to town. Create a home with eight bedrooms into whatever your heart desires. Vendors wanted it gone yesterday and have given the property a makeover in a way where you can imagine designing your long awaited modern kitchen area along with lounge room and maybe even a stylish bath room. It’s your call for this once called doctor’s surgery to be now made into a well-located family home with huge potential.

107 Flint Street, South Forbes home offers to the market a very well maintained three bedroom home situated in a highly desired area of town. Set back off Flint Street allows for this home to have plenty of privacy when entertaining guests. Vendor needs gone as maintenance and upkeep is becoming unrealistic. If you’re thinking about investing your money in the rental market or occupying a desired home in South Forbes, then 107 Flint Street could be yours.

8712 Lachlan Valley Way, Forbes. We all know that finding approximately 5 acres just outside of town with a very tidy three bedroom cottage set amongst established grapevines, gardens and lawns is like finding a needle in a hay stack. This once off opportunity has now risen to the market’s attention with so much potential.

Chislett’s vineyard was well known around the district for his divine red and white wine. The estate is being wound up and vendor has done a wonderful job maintaining the property like Mr Chislett had done some years ago. It’s now your time to buy such a rarity.

Local WIRES Branch Needs More Volunteers

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The local WIRES branch has been busy with a seasonal influx of microbats and flying foxes.

Recently, a local resident called for help with 22 little forest bats which were roosting in a pool umbrella when it blew into the pool.

An orphaned grey-headed flying fox baby, nine days old, was found by another local resident with injuries from a raptor (bird of prey) attack.

All are recovering in the care of WIRES members and will eventually be released.

WIRES assists all orphaned, injured or displaced native fauna and they are currently in need of more local members.

Anyone interested in joining the Weddin Lachlan WIRES team can attend the next WIRES RICC (Rescue and Immediate Care Course) to be held in Cowra on Saturday, 17th March. For more information please email training@wires.org.au to register. The course includes an online theory component which is completed prior to attending the course.

If you find a sick, injured or orphaned bat or flying fox, please do not attempt to handle or catch it yourself as there is a potential health risk. Please call WIRES on 1300 094 737 immediately with the location details and they will facilitate a rescue by a trained and vaccinated member.

If you find an injured animal or bird, please call WIRES or ‘Report a Rescue’ following the links on the website www.wires.org.au.

Showgirls Head To Sydney

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Showgirl Grace Allen and Eugowra Showgirl Caitlin Herbert were selected to represent our zone at the state finals of the Land Royal Showgirl competition in Sydney at the Easter Show on Sunday, 25th March.

The two girls were selected from 17 entrants at the Zone 6 Regional Showgirl Finals held in Blayney on Saturday.

The entrants were interviewed by three judges in the morning and attended a lunch with all the other entrants and judges. Finally, a formal presentation dinner was held in the evening which completed the judging process. All the girls were interviewed on stage in front of attendees and the judges. At the conclusion of the evening, the three finalists were announced.

The Showgirls were judged on rural knowledge, presentation and speech, personality, general knowledge, confidence and ambition and life goals. Knowledge of their local community and current affairs and their involvement in and experience of rural affairs were taken into account.

Grace is a registered nurse completing her studies at Sydney University. She is now employed in the emergency department at the Orange Health Service.

Caitlin is a oral health therapist and runs a dental education program providing presentations to rural schools.

According to an excerpt from the Rules and Regulations of Showgirl Competitions, “The aim is to find a person most suited to represent young rural women of NSW. She should be able to converse intelligently about Australia in general and in particular her own district.”

Matt Prow: I love Madonna because she is such a talented person and she’s a pretty good dancer.

Peter Clifton: Winston Churchill because of what he did for the Second World War.

Kathy Prow: It would have to be Jesus. The reason being he loved humanity and set a great example.

Rodeo Horse Is Jewel In Crown

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

A local cowboy never dreamt a work horse called Jewel N Half that he bought to use on cattle would live up to its name by winning a national rodeo title in his first year of competing.

Tim Childs and his partner Belinda are very proud of their eight-year-old gelding after winning the 2017 Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) Team Roping Heading Horse of the Year title.

“We are pretty stoked about it,” said Tim, who owns a property between Parkes and Forbes where he has a horse trainer facility and his own rodeo arena. “We have been training Jewel N Half for the past three years, but this was his first full year of competing.” According to Tim his horse’s performance “was a pretty good effort” considering he is only still a baby.

Tim and Belinda spend a lot of time on the road travelling to rodeos all around the country. “We have won a lot of rodeos, but never a national title.” ABCRA is the only association incorporating camp drafting and rodeo under one umbrella, and holds an annual competition Australia wide.

Tim takes part in the team roping event featuring a steer and two mounted riders, called a header and a heeler. Tim is the header and he is first out of the chute. It is his responsibility to throw a lasso around the steer’s horns and turn the animal back so the heeler can throw his loop around the steer’s hind heels.

Team roping events are only considered complete when both horses are facing the steer with both front feet on the ground and with the ropes dallied and tight.

Looks like a long rodeo career awaits Tim with this diamond performer in his ‘crown’.

NSW remains one of the last states in Australia to prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in smokefree public spaces. Lessons From A Life Of Addiction

February 22, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

After almost 40 years of addiction, all she saw in the mirror was a sad, angry, overweight, unemployable and ugly person with no self-respect. “I hated that reflection.”

Fast forward 20 months and you meet 52-year-old Robyn Lewis – a picture of health and fitness. She has found a purpose in life and many people guess her to be six or seven years younger than her age.

You’d look far to find a more contrasting before and after story which Robyn is now using to motivate others tackle the long road to recovery to living a fulfilling life. “I grew up in a very violent home with an alcoholic father. I only found out after his death that he was also the victim of domestic violence as a child.”

At 15 Robyn turned to drugs and started using marijuana, which was followed by drinking and smoking. “At 17 I turned to amphetamines and at 18 ran away from home.”

She had a relationship with an older man, also a drug user, “and he got me into needles, which I continued for the next 35 years.”

In 2009 her partner at the time was murdered and she was prescribed an anti-psychotic drug. “I got addicted to that for four years and picked up 30kg.”

She was also on ice for 15 years, had developed a gambling addiction and was drinking heavily.

“I was a complete wreck, suicidal with no self-esteem or self-respect, and very angry.

I had tried all types of rehabilitation, counselling, doctors and psychiatrists. None of them worked for me.

“Those people have no clue what it’s like when you’ve been on ice for five days not eating, drinking or sleeping. I always felt they patronised me. I had no respect for them.”

The turnaround came when her new GP introduced her to the Smart Recovery program. “This program did not label me, there was no judgement and I managed my own recovery with the support of the group.

“The weekly meetings focused on the last seven days and the next seven days.

Through self-management I reached a point one day when I realised I did not need any drugs and threw it all in the bin.”

Robyn has been clean for 20 months and her latest ‘addictions’ are being fit and healthy, and doing speaking engagements to tell her story.

“I have wasted almost 40 years of my life. I feel like I need to tell my story in order to help others. So many people have been really helpful. I’ve had so much reaction and never realised just how big the problem is.”

Robyn receives a lot of calls and emails from family members who are concerned about their loved ones. “People’s stories and tears keep me motivated. I will never go back.”

If you would like to hear Robyn she will be the speaker at the Canowindra Phoenix International Women’s Day event in Canowindra on 8th March, and on 17th March she will be in Bogan Gate during Mental Health Prevent Week.

She has started a Smart Recovery group in West Wyalong where she lives. The group meets every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Contact her on 0403 523 711 or dunromin1965@hotmail.com
