Improve Your Brain Power

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The figures are staggering and there’s little awareness that more than 413,000 people in Australia live with dementia. By 2050 that figure will rise to almost one million.

“Dementia can’t directly be prevented or cured but reducing risk is important,” Alzheimer’s Australia chief executive officer

Maree McCabe says. “Many people are not aware of what they can do to reduce the risk of getting dementia.”

Look after your heart: Look after your heart health by regularly checking your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Challenge your brain: Exercising your brain is also important. Find something that involves learning new skills – and keep on learning. Try a new sport, learn a new language, start a course, study for a new qualification at work or take up a new hobby.

Be active: “Being physically active increases blood flow to the brain and this stimulates growth of the brain cells and the connections between them,” Maree says.

Enjoy social activity: Social activity has benefits in a range of areas, including cognitive function. Make time to catch up with family and friends, join a social club or interest group, or volunteer in your community.

Follow a healthy diet: “We need a balanced diet to maintain brain health and function, and some foods may be more directly linked to dementia and reducing your risk,” Maree says.

Change For Change

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Life Pharmacy Group, including Flannery’s Pharmacy and Life Pharmacy in Forbes, have committed to raising funds to build a school in Nepal.

“With everything happening around the world I’m sure everyone would agree that we are indeed very fortunate to call Australia home,” said pharmacy owner Michael Flannery.

“As a business, we have been thinking about what we can do to make a lasting impact for change in 2018 and from that was born our ‘Let’s build a new Life Pharmacy Group – School – Change for Change’ school project appeal.”

While the Himalaya region is known to the Western World as a vast adventure playground for trekkers and mountaineers alike, for the local communities, life is anything but easy – with access to basic health and education services often well out of reach.

Without access to a quality education, children in remote communities like the Everest or Solukhumbu region of Nepal remain deprived of the life skills and knowledge gained from education.

“In response to this we are working directly in partnership with the Australian Himalayan Foundation and its flagship Teacher Training and Quality Education (TTQE) program that operates in the poorest region of rural Nepal,” said Michael. “Helping to ensure that post the earthquake all children have access first and foremost to a school and importantly an education.”

They say that by giving the gift of education you can change a generation. The devastating earthquakes in Nepal resulted in 9,000 deaths and injured over 20,000 people.

“The Life Pharmacy Group would like to help rebuild their lives by making a permanent impact in their community by raising much needed funds for a new school,” said Michael, “but we need help from our local communities here in Australia.”

Importantly, the rebuild project will also ensure that the school be made with a steel foundation and structure, becoming a safer shelter for the children and their community.

“The Forbes community is always extremely generous and the whole concept is ‘change for change’ so it doesn’t need to be a huge donation,” said Flannery’s Business Manager, Debbie Prior. “If you would like to help us raise funds for this worthwhile cause, you can donate at either Life Pharmacy or Flannery’s Pharmacy.”

Why Weight?

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Maintaining a healthy weight is vitally important to staying healthy as you grow older.

Being overweight can increase the risk of many health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and strokes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, kidney disease and osteoarthritis.

Gaining a few kilos during the year may not seem like a big deal. But these kilos can add up over time.

If you are considered to be overweight, losing as little as 5 percent of your body weight may lower your risk for several diseases, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Eating a balanced, nutritious diet and being physically active is the best way to stay healthy and help reduce your risk of disease. To maintain a stable weight, your energy (kilojoule) intake needs to equal the energy you use. If you use more energy than you consume, you will lose weight. On the other hand, if you eat more than you use, you will gain weight.

For some, the answer to losing excess body fat is to make small healthy changes to your eating and exercise habits.  These changes should be things that you can maintain as part of your lifestyle – that way you will lose weight and keep it off.

However, some people may need help to lose those extra kilos and the team at Flannery’s Pharmacy can help you with information, advice and a range of meal replacement and weight loss products specifically formulated to help you lose weight.

If you would like help to lose weight, call in to Flannery’s Pharmacy for information and advice and let us help you on your weight loss journey.

Croquet News And Results

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 10th February Tuesday saw a good number of players turn out considering the hot early mornings we’ve had recently. The morning was followed by a birthday lunch at the Chinese Garden restaurant for three of our members, Mary Hodges, Jill Rubie and Caryl Slattery.

Clean sweepers with three winning games on Tuesday were Harley Stewart, Libby Smart and John MacCullagh, Veva MacCullagh and Barry White. Congratulations teams.

Saturday saw another good turn out with a team of two following on and playing two balls each. Congratulations Barry Shearing, a visiting player, for taking on this task and making a very credible 11 points against Bill Scott’s 14 points.

Clean sweepers on Saturday were Merv Langfield, Veva MacCullagh, Kevin Rubie and Bill Scott. Congratulations teams. Club President Elvy Quirk welcomed Anne and Harley Stewart’s visitors, Helen Moore and Barry Shearing to our Saturday games and made a further announcement wishing Cherylin Cole a speedy recovery from her very recent heart surgery.

Zone 6 Showgirl Finals

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Grace Allen, the 49th Forbes Showgirl will be representing our town on Saturday, 17th February in Blayney at the Zone 6 Regional Showgirl Finals.

Grace will be interviewed by three judges on the morning of the 17th. She will then attend a lunch with all the other entrants (17 girls in total) and the judges. A presentation dinner will be held that evening which will complete the judging process. All the girls will be interviewed on stage in front of their invited family and friends, ASC and RAS delegates and the judges.

At the conclusion of the evening, the three winners will be announced. Each of these women will then proceed to the state finals of the Land Royal Showgirl competition in Sydney at the Easter Show on Sunday, 25th March 2018.

Grace has attended many local shows following Forbes’ show last year. She has genuinely embraced the whole concept of ‘Showgirl’. She has also contacted many past and present showgirls and those involved in the movement from all over the state. Recently, Grace attended the Personal Development weekend in Dubbo, which takes place annually for any interested showgirls to learn the ins and outs of presentation.

According to an excerpt from the Rules and Regulations of Showgirl Competitions, “The aim of the Showgirl Competition is to find a person most suited to represent young rural women of NSW. The young lady must be articulate and presentable with a pleasant personality. She will be required to meet a wide variety of people and should be able to converse intelligently about Australia in general and in particular her own district.”

The best of luck and support to Grace, as she meets the next challenge and endeavours to be our town’s representative at the 2018 Sydney Royal.

Chandler Aces Again Amid Good Scores

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes golfers were keen to put some decent scores on the board, but the day was capped off by a hole-in-one by Bruce Chandler during Saturday’s event.

Saturday’s event was an 18-hole Stableford, sponsored by Troy Howe Electrical.

The course was enjoyed by a field of 61 players who generally scored well.

The A-division winner was Phil Maher, who once again was in form and scored 42 points. Close behind was Scott Kirkman with 41 points. They each had numerous pars and birdies.

The B-division had a large group of players on 41 points. In the end Bruce Chandler took the honour with 41 points on countback from Tom Edols (41), who took runner-up on count back from many others.

The ball sweep went to 37 on count back, going to: 42 – P Maher; 41 – B Chandler, T Edols, L O’Connor, S Kirkman, S Grallelis; 40 – Andy Cogswell, R Borger; 39 – B Shine, P Grayson; 38 – C Alley, B Doyle, R Smith, S McAlister, R Besgrove; 37 – A Rees.

The NTP’s went to: 1st – Marty Cahill, 18th – Bruce Chandler. Nobody could beat Bruce on the 18th, but there were a few contenders for the 9th.

Certainly, the story of the day was Bruce Chandler’s ‘ace’ on the 18th. He used a 5-iron, seemed to hit it okay and watched as it landed on the front of the green and rolled forward. He and his group thought it may have rolled off the back, but it was most definitely in the hole.

Sunday was Stableford Medley day, played by 9 players who all enjoyed their day. It was an all-male day with the ladies on other business. The winner was Charles Dwyer with 37 points, followed by Steve Betland on 36.

There was no ball sweep, but the NTP’s were well received. The 9th went to Andy Dukes and the 18th to Steve Betland.

There were no visitors.

This Sunday, we have a Par-3 comp where both club players and social players are invited. This is aimed at giving the club golfers a bit of a lift, and enticing the social players out for a bit of fun.

The CWDGA Pennants played the 2nd round last weekend at Bathurst. Our teams did not fare too well, with the 2’s (3/2) and 4’s (4/1) losing and the 3’s winning 3/2. The Div 1 team had a bye.

Lachlan Dragons’ Magnificent Seven

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Seven members of the Forbes Dragon Boat Club have been selected to represent Western NSW in the upcoming National Dragon Boat Championships.

They are Bill and Beth Thomas, Warren and Donna Edwards and Rochelle Smith of Parkes; and Chris Favelle and Claire Davis of Forbes. The championships will be held at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, with Western NSW competing on 4th of March.

The ‘magnificent seven’ have been training hard under State coach Deb Clarke, and assistant coach Lou Linke. They took part in a regatta against the top ACT teams on Lake Burley Griffin on Saturday with some of the crew competing in as many as nine races, all over a distance of 500 metres!

“It was a fabulous day on the water,” said Coach Deb, “with everyone paddling so strongly and with commitment.” It was a rewarding day as the teams made all finals and won one gold and one bronze place.

“The feeling of being in a boat racing to first place is indescribable,” said Beth Thomas. “Paddlers are totally focussed on their individual part in the race, but are conscious as well of keeping perfect time and technique with their fellow crew members.

As our boat cut through the water, we were very closely flanked on either side by the fastest of the ACT teams. Neck and neck.

Stroke for stoke. Beat for beat. Then the Western team found their ‘inner mongrel’ (as the coach likes to quote) and we drew away in the last few metres to take the first place. It was an exciting end to a great day.”

If you’d like to join up and become a dragon boater, practise times are on Thursday at 5:45pm or Sunday at 8:15am at Lake Forbes.

Free Loose-Fill Asbestos Testing: The NSW Government is offering free tests for loose-fill asbestos insulation in the Forbes Shire Council area after a property in the area was confirmed to contain the product. Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless urged homeowners to sign up before 12th March for the free sample testing. “If you are the owner of a pre-1980’s residential property in the Forbes Council area, you are eligible to register for the free testing,” said Rick. “Once the testing has been completed, the outcome of those tests will inform any further action that needs to be considered.”

If your home is found to contain loosefill asbestos insulation there are options available, including having your home purchased at market value – as if it didn’t contain loose-fill asbestos. You can register for free testing online at www.loosefillasbestos. nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 13 77 88.

You can also speak to a NSW Fair Trading representative about the free testing on Tuesday, 20th February (11am – 4pm) outside Bernardi’s IGA; Wednesday, 21st February (9am – 2pm) at Bunnings; Wednesday, 28th February (9am – 2pm) outside Bernardi’s IGA and Thursday, 1st March (9am – 2pm) outside Woolworths.

Catch of the Week Winners: We have been receiving some great fishing photographs! Thank you for sending them in and please keep it coming! Jack Cole (December) and Colette Middleton (January) were our lucky winners. If you are a winner and have not yet done so, please collect your $25 voucher prize for Loomzy’s Fish ‘n’ Fix in Forbes, from Kate Small at the Ian Simpson office and enjoy!

Wirrinya Farewell: The Wirrinya community held a farewell luncheon for Jeff and Ann Moon, Trevor and Sandra Toole and Angus and Kim Maslin at the Wirrinya ski dam on Saturday, 10th February with just over 90 people attending. It was a great send off for them all; in appreciation for all the commitment and dedication they had given the community over the many years living in the district. The Toole and Moon Family have been in the district for two generations and the Maslins bought the farm from Fred Anderson 25 years ago. The Wirrinya Progress gave them all a cheese board with the name of their property on it. All three families have moved into Forbes.

Forbes Public School Market

February 15, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The countdown has well and truly begun for next weekend’s Market Day hosted by Forbes Public School. The gates will open to the community at 9am with over 70 high quality market stalls from across the central west region and a jam-packed agenda of entertainment and fun.

The focus of the day is on quality stalls and the committee is confident they have met the brief. “We are so pleased with how the day has come together,” said spokesperson Linda Van Coller. “We wanted to provide an atmosphere where families could come and enjoy a fun morning together. Music from local talent will also look to draw a crowd and add to the festivities on the picturesque lakeside oval.”

Keep an eye out for the Minions that will be taking over Forbes from next Friday. All are welcome to join this great community event from 9am to 1pm on 24th February 2018.
