COUNCIL COMMENTS

June 7, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

It’s been another massive weekend for sport in Forbes and it was especially great to see the town buzzing with a large range of junior sport.

We have had some big carnivals to town which have a major impact on the local economy. It’s a significant benefit to local businesses and accommodation venues with people travelling from right across the state. As well as providing opportunities to play against other teams and skill levels, these carnivals are vital to keep Forbes moving forward.

The National Carp Control Plan hosted a briefing to discuss the integrated strategy for the control of carp, as we know that they are a real problem in our Lachlan River.

The plan aims to help recover the health of Australian waterways and aquatic biodiversity and is based on thorough and measured approaches, ensuring the benefits and risks of carp biocontrol are understood and the right recommendations are made to government.

The carp virus, Cyprinid herpes virus 3, is a naturally-occurring disease first observed to kill large numbers of carp in 1997 in Germany. A critical challenge for the National Carp Control Plan is to demonstrate how we can manage carp that are killed by the disease in a way which minimises impacts on water quality, people, livestock and native species.

Congratulations go to Tom Drane for his fantastic effort in Illinois at the AMA Flat Track Grand Nationals. He has done Forbes proud.

Fireworks And The Family Pet

June 7, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

With it being the June long weekend, residents are reminded that this can be a trying time for dogs who may have an aversion to fireworks.

Director of Planning and Growth with Forbes Shire Council, Paul Bennett said that though it can be stressful for some pets there are a number of things that you can do as an owner to minimise the impact.

“Number one action to take would be to ensure that your pet is registered and the details are up to date. You can do this at council and the process is quick and easy and will help to identify your dog quickly if he or she escapes,” said Paul.

“Keeping an eye on them is also important but avoid fussing over your pet too much and try to engage them in normal inside activities.”

“Your local vet may also be able to recommend some new treatment options for managing noise phobias.”

For more information, contact council’s Environment Services and Planning department on (02) 6850 2344 or your local veterinarian.

June 7, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 2nd June

On Tuesday, 29th May golf croquet saw a large number of members attending the day’s games with two groups having to follow on. The morning had Veva MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Robin Pols, Libby Smart and Marj Styles as the winners of three games.

A frosty start to Saturday, 2nd June and yet again we had another good turnout, with four visitors bringing the number of people attending to 31 in total. Welcome back to regular visitors to our town, Barry Shearing and Helen Moore. Another welcome to Gay Mitchell and Jennie Arthur, on their first visit.

The winners of three games on this day were Cherylin Cole, John MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Robin Pols and Bill Scott. Well done to all!

The birthday lunch for this month was held at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Tuesday, 5th June.

The Croquet Club is always looking for new members. If you would like to have a game, we meet every Tuesday and Saturday.

Biggest Steer Weight Gain Ever?

June 7, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

A greedy Senepol/Angus cross steer has recorded a whopping 4.6kg daily weight gain during the Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition in Queensland, the highest mid-term weight gain in its 30 year history.

The 24-month-old steer, one of three entered by first time exhibitors Clayton and Sarah Maynard, Southern Star Rural, Canowindra NSW, currently leads the pack of 143 competition steers at the 53 day mark of their feedlot preparation.

Senepols are leading the way for breed results too with the top four exhibits doing 3.41kg/day, ahead of the overall competition average of 2.87kg/day.

Owner Clayton Maynard from Canowindra, integrated Senepols alongside a composite breeder herd when he began his operation eight years ago, with this indulgent steer sired by 5 Star 130509.

Clayton credited genetic selection as the secret to the steer’s surprising success having been a middle of the range animal when he left for the competition.

“At the time I didn’t think this particular steer was a stand out, he wasn’t an overly big calf and was middle of the range for weight,” he said.

“I think we are doing a good job, but entering a competition like this provides positive afirmation on the decisions we have made. I think that’s vital for decision making down the track.”

A selection of quality Senepol and Senepol/ Angus and Senepol/Charolais bulls are available for sale from Southern Star Rural in Canowindra. Call Clayton Maynard on 0439 029 204 for more information.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have been living in Forbes for seven years now. I’m not a city person and have always been a country boy.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? Since retiring I have been involved in the Forbes Country Music Club of which I am the current club president. I really enjoy playing music in bands.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I love playing guitar and listening to music on weekends.

What are you really good at? I’m a good guitarist and singer.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? If I had a super power, I would get rid of bad people and keep good people.

What is your pet hate? My pet hate would have to be liars and deceitful people.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. My best holiday has to be diving in the Maldives for sunken wrecks.

MAYORAL NOTES

May 31, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The General Manager and I attended the Centroc meeting in Parliament House last week. Here the Central West Councils were the first to form a new government recognised body to represent the area, in place of the volunteer body. Central NSW JO was launched and hosted its inaugural meeting with Lachlan Shire Mayor, John Medcalf elected as the chairman and Blayney Mayor, Scott Ferguson elected deputy chairman.

Mayors will vote and continue to push state and federal governments on important issues such as improved road links to Sydney, better telecommunications, upgraded health facilities and continued development for the regions.

There are 10 member Councils in the Central NSW JO: Bathurst Regional Council, Blayney Shire Council, Cabonne Council, Cowra Shire Council, Forbes Shire Council, Lachlan Shire Council, Oberon Shire Council, Orange City Council, Parkes Shire Council and Weddin Shire Council.

Maureen and I travelled to the Marina Prior and David Hobson concert in Dubbo on the weekend. It was absolutely fantastic and a truly wonderful afternoon of entertainment.

Best wishes to young Tom Drane as he represents our town in the US this week. We are all very excited for him to have done so well in his chosen sport.

We are very excited to host the Sydney Youth Orchestra for the State Showcase also featuring the Forbes Town Band tonight at the Town Hall. The doors will open at 6.30pm. What an opportunity to hear the wonderful acoustics of our Town Hall.

Michael McCormack Opens Parkes Office

May 31, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Nationals’ Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, will open an electorate office in Parkes on Monday, 4th June.

“The northern part of the Riverina electorate, which includes Parkes, Forbes, Peak Hill, Trundle, Tullamore and Cowra, is a vibrant region and deserves an accessible office to provide the best representation possible,” Michael said.

“I am in this part of the electorate frequently and the office will allow me to meet constituents in a private and comfortable environment.

“Having an office with a full-time staff member in the region will also provide a face-to-face service for constituents.”

The Parkes office will be located at 207A Clarinda Street and will have one full-time staff member. The office telephone number will be 6862 4560. “I am really delighted to have created a full-time job in Parkes and to have supported local trades in the outfitting of the building,” Michael said.

An official opening of the office will be held today at 5pm.

“From about 4.30pm I will take a walk through the central business district and would love to catch up with as many people as possible for a quick hello.”

Parkes Mayor, Councillor Ken Keith, welcomed the decision to open the new office. “We are delighted the Federal Member has decided to locate his office in Parkes in the northern part of the electorate to make it easier and more convenient for his constituents to meet with him and to discuss their issues,” the Mayor said.

Australians’ $21 billion online shopping spree: More Australians are shopping online than ever with total purchases topping $21 billion for the first time, according to new research from Australia Post. Australia Post released its annual Inside Australian Online Shopping Report, an overview of Australia’s eCommerce market, which identifies who is buying what and where online. The report showed that Australians spent $21.3 billion last year. Local retailers accounted for more than 80% of the total spend. To download a copy of the report, visit auspost.com.au/einsights.

Renewable Rooftop Record Smashed: Rooftop solar is surging in Australia, with the rate of installation jumping by almost 60% in 2018. The Green Energy Market’s ‘Renewable Energy Index – April’ shows a spike of 56% in the rate of rooftop solar capacity installations across the nation this year. Climate Councillor and energy expert Professor Andrew Stock said: “More and more Australian homeowners and businesses are turning to clean, affordable and reliable renewables like solar, harnessing the power of the sun and taking control of their power bills. We’ve got a never-ending and widely available power source at our fingertips, which can cut the nation’s rising greenhouse gas pollution and combined with storage, can provide cheap power across Australia on demand, 24/7.”

Sow crops safely near poles and wires: Essential Energy is urging farm machinery operators to stay safe when sowing crops near the electricity network following warmer than average autumn conditions across NSW. Prolonged heat can cause powerlines to sag and reduce line clearance heights from the ground. If machinery does contact overhead powerlines, operators are advised to stay in the cabin of their vehicle and contact Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80.” Electricity can arc or ‘jump’ across open spaces, so bystanders should remain at least eight metres away and treat powerlines as if they are ‘live’.
