The South West Slopes (SWS) Stud Merino Breeders Field Day will take place on Tuesday, 4th September commencing at 10am at the Harden Showgrounds. The annual field day provides a day full of interest and enjoyment for sheep breeders and visitors alike with a wide range of Merino sheep genetics on show. The stud displays are undercover of marquees in an ideal venue for this time of year. Reading Downtown Brings Children And Books Together

There were countless little scurvy scoundrels that couldn’t wait to dig their fingers into the sand to find possible hidden treasures buried in Victoria Park last Friday.

The ever popular Reading Downtown Day coincided with Book Week and shared the theme, ‘Find Your Treasure’. The theme depicting the search of discovering your next great book and an incredible story feeling like a treasure found.

Children celebrated story books by bringing their favourite characters to life. From pirates to clowns, Spiderman, Little Red Riding Hood and Where’s Wally, approximately 800 very excited children could be seen exploring the park with inspired costumes and makeup.

The Reading Downtown Day is hosted annually by Forbes Birth to Kinder and aims to raise awareness about reading to children from a very young age.

Forbes Birth to Kinder committee member, Maree Yapp said that they were delighted to be having such a successful day.

“This is our 14th year of the Reading Downtown Day in Forbes. The weather is superb and we’re really excited to have all the schools and early childhood centres here, and lots of families with young children,” said Maree.

The day was packed with fun activities at various activity stations to keep the little book-loving ones busy! Among these stations were students of Forbes High School who put on a very entertaining drama of The Three Little Pigs. Familiar faces, such as Member for Orange Phil Donato, captivated the children with theatrical storytelling at another station.

Strong Growth For Small Winemakers Show

Judging for the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show started on Monday and concluded on Wednesday at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre.

This year 553 wines were entered from 90 wineries across NSW and the ACT, marking an increase of 40 entries from last year’s show.

The show is open to all NSW and ACT wine producers that crush a maximum of 500 tonnes annually.

This year the Chairman of judges is Jeff Byrne, who is also the Chief Winemaker at Agnew Wines in the Hunter Valley.

“Jeff has served as a Panel Chair and judge with us for many years and brings a wealth of experience to the judging team,” said NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show President, Mark Watts.

“Jeff and the committee have chosen judges from across NSW wine regions and diverse parts of the industry, who would have selected the top wines based on their appearance, aroma, body, taste and finish.”

The public tasting will be held tonight at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre.

The event starts at 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Tickets are on sale at the door for $25 and includes finger food.

The continuing dedicated efforts of Forbes & District Meals On Wheels volunteers, will be celebrated as part of National Meals on Wheels Day on Wednesday, 29th August.

The inspiring team at Forbes & District Meals On Wheels, help make up Meals on Wheels’ 76,000 strong volunteer network, which is spread across 600 grass roots organisations that have nourished their local communities for 65 years.

“You get more than just a meal from Meals on Wheels,” said Australian Meals on Wheels Association (AMOWA) President, Sharyn Broer.

“Our fantastic volunteers take the time to say hello and make sure you’re okay. A hearty meal warms the tummy, but a simple chat can warm the soul,” said Sharyn.

Support from local Meals on Wheels services makes a real difference in improving health outcomes while reducing health and aged care costs. As well as delivering tasty and nourishing meals that are designed to meet the nutritional needs of older people, Meals on Wheels volunteers bring a daily dose of companionship and human connection, and peace of mind for clients and their families.

Today, and every week day, volunteers will help to produce, prepare, select and pack more than 35,000 meals. Together, Australian Meals on Wheels volunteers make around 10 million house calls each year, making sure that clients are safe and well, and brightening the day for more than 120,000 people who need a little bit of support.

“On National Meals on Wheels Day, we are appealing for more volunteers to join our teams across Australia. If you have a few hours to spare to deliver meals or lend a helping hand in our kitchens, and make a huge impact in your community, we would love to hear from you. And if you can’t donate your time, consider donating a few dollars to help keep our wheels turning.”

Meals on Wheels services across Australia are planning local celebrations to recognise, pay tribute and congratulate our volunteers whose commitment and support is immeasurable.

Forbes & District Meals On Wheels, employs three staff, has 160 volunteers and provides a meal service for 93 people.

Forbes Badminton Club: The Forbes Badminton Club will be entering their second season. Set to start on 8th August, every Wednesday night from 6:30pm to 9pm at Forbes High School. Forbes Town & District Band: The Forbes Town Band is hosting a free concert on Monday, 27th August from 6pm to 7pm at the Forbes Services Club Auditorium. The concert and meeting is a chance for the public to share ideas in order to assist the band in developing a strategic plan for the future.

Men’s Yarn Up Circle: Join the Men’s Yarning Circle in Forbes. This is a men’s group to talk about all issues such as domestic violence, rough past… your choice. Men listening to men! Trundle Royal Far West: The Trundle RFW branch is hosting the ‘Old Time Dance’ on Sunday, 2nd September from 2pm to 6pm in the Trundle Memorial Hall. Not sure what to do for dad on Father’s Day but want to do something special?

Last Sunday the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull and Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack visited Forbes to announce the government’s $1 million drought assistance to 60 councils in drought affected states.

Forbes Shire Council being one of them, the funds will secure for projects that have the biggest impact on our community during these times of drought.

It was agreed at our Forbes Shire Council meeting last Thursday, to make water from our depot available to rural ratepayers free of charge. As it stands our standpipe at the depot needs upgrading to ensure it is safe for public use and the money from this government assistance will therefore be put to good use. A special mention must be paid to the hosts of Sunday’s announcement, HE Silos and the Morrison family, who did an outstanding job representing the Forbes business community, the farmers and manufacturers of grain handling equipment. The announcement was held at their premises in Forbes and I personally thank them for their hospitality and how they handled the situation.

Level 1 water restrictions are now in place for our shire. This level of restriction is more about time constraints than quantities but we ask that the community be considerate of this as well.

The wonderful Reading Downtown Day is on again this week. This year we have Philip Donato coming to Forbes to read to the school children in what should be a great day for all.

Sand Grass Green Champs Results

Over the weekend, the third staging of the Sand Grass Greens Championships was held at Grenfell and Forbes courses. The event, managed by GolfNSW and sponsored by Forbes Shire Council, was attended by over 70 players, travelling from 16 clubs across regional and city NSW.

The first round was played at Grenfell on Saturday. A brief shower of rain did not help the putting on the sand greens but conditions improved as did the scores.

The Round 1 Men’s Handicap winner, on count back, was Ash Whitechurch (Grenfell) with 38 points. The Ladies Handicap winner was Sally Mitton (Grenfell) with 35 points and also a winner in count back. The NTP’s went to: 9th –Men – A McDonald (F), Ladies – nil; 18th –Men – Z Kelly (Parkes) and L McCutcheon (Trangie).

On Sunday, the players were at Forbes playing on grass greens. The Round 2 Men’s Handicap winner, on count back, was Geoff Read (The Ridge) with 36 points.

The Ladies Handicap winner was Chantelle Greaves (Dunedoo) with 39 points.

The NTP’s went to: 9th –Men – B Shine (F), Ladies – J Fletcher (F); 18th –Men – Gerry Bassingthwaite (Cootamundra), Ladies – V Forsyth (G).

The 36-hole event prize winners were:

Men

• 36-hole Scratch winner: M Hale (Mudgee) 67 points.

• 36-hole Scratch runner-up: G Harding (Young) 51 points.

• 36-hole Nett winner: B Hughes (Grenfell) 65 points.

• 36-hole Nett runner-up: I Bown (Forbes) 64 on c/b.

Ladies

• 36-hole Scratch winner: C Greaves (Dunedoo) 52 points.

• 36-hole Scratch runner-up: L Harding (Young) 43 points.

• 36-hole Nett winner: K Solberg (Dunedoo) 71 pts.

• 36-hole Nett runner-up: V Forsyth (Grenfell) 66 pts.

There were also prizes for a team event, where the prizes were $500 from GolfNSW to go towards junior promotion programmes at the club. The winners were:

• 1st: Grenfell (V Forsyth, B Hughes, C Johnson, A Whitechurch).

• 2nd: Forbes (S Grallelis, I Bown, A Rees, G Drane).

• 3rd: Cootamundra (G Bassingthwaite, G Byrne, G Ward).

Croquet News And Results

Croquet week ending 18th August

There was a smaller group of players on Tuesday for our golf croquet. The game of the day was the team of Neville and Marie Spry who had their first win as a team since joining the club. They defeated two seasoned players in a close game, seven points to six.

We have two players in hospital and two players who are sick at home. We wish them well and hope they have a speedy recovery.

The only winner of three games was Robin Pols. She has been playing very well the last few weeks. Well done Robin!

Saturday’s Aussie croquet was played in a strong wind but did produce our best turn out of the year with three follow on groups.

Five players won their three games. They were John Allegri, Cherylin Cole, John Cole, Bruce Field and Kevin Rubie. It was great to see Libby Smart back on the courts. She has been on the sick list for a few months.
