Good Scores In Golf

On Saturday, 53 players contested an Individual Stableford event, sponsored by Marg Hurst in memory of her dear, Ron Hurst.

The A-division winner was Tony Cogswell, with 42 points. Runner-up was Doug Churchill with a good 39 points. In the Bdivision, Peter Tisdell won with a score of 43 points. Runner-up was Bob Borger with his 42 points.

The ball sweep went to 37 points on count back, going to: 43 – P Tisdell; 42 – T Cogswell, R Borger; 40 – G Webb, M Watts; 39 – D Churchill, R Morris; 38 – P Kay, G Collits and 37 – P Cowhan, R Nixon, L Little, P Grayson.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Pymont; 18th – M Watts.

The best story of the day goes to Tony Cogswell’s ‘2’, scored on the 10th hole. His tee shot was slightly left, from where he drew his second around the trees. The ball flew as he had hoped, landed, rolled and disappeared into the hole. His jubilation was shared by all in his group.

Sunday was a beautiful Spring day, which was enjoyed by a small but energetic field in the Stableford Medley. No doubt the show had tired a few regulars out.

The winner was Bruce Carpenter, with 33 points. He nudged in ahead of Rod Besgrove on count back. There was no ball sweep.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Bess Shields; 18th – Rod Besgrove. An enjoyable day was had by Kevin Rivett, a visitor from Portland GC. He was in the mix with the front-runners but unfortunately missed out on count back.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? We moved to Forbes in 2007. Our kids have gotten a better education and more opportunities here, plus it’s been a great town to enjoy life with friends and family!

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I recently started my own business Tara Kelly Real Estate. I love helping people solve their real estate dilemmas!

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I love doing an early morning walk around the lake and having barbeques and a few drinks on the banks of the Lachlan River.

What are you really good at? I would like to say singing, however I’m not really very good… but I wish I was!

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I always wanted to be able to fight like Bruce Lee.

What is your pet hate? When smokers throw cigarette butts out their car window.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. I went on a cruise in the Caribbean many years ago. The water was crystal clear and the weather was amazing.

Mighty Magpies Ready For Minor Premiers

The Forbes Magpies Junior Rugby League under 14’s team has made it all the way through to the Minor Premiers 2018. The Magpies will meet Red Bend in the grand final at Spooner Oval on Saturday afternoon.

“The boys have had an extremely successful year, with all growing as players and as young men,” according to Coach Chris Butler. “Their confidence and ability as a team is impressive,” he said.

A real team effort in 2018 has seen this team struggle with their fair share of setbacks and injuries. They became Minor Premiers for the second year in a row after a big win against West Wyalong on Saturday, 11th August, in front of a home crowd.

Now with a home ground grand final booked the excitement, anticipation and suspense was apparent at training on Tuesday. The boys were trying to remain calm and treat it as just another training session but with special attention from supporters and members of this wonderful club the change in mood was evident.

Speaking with supportive mums, Tracey Bray and Lisa Glasson, this excitement and anticipation was confirmed with both mums saying that their boys where extremely focused and excited. Both mums wanted to wish the team the best of luck and said, “We know you can do it!’”.

Monthly Medal Scores Surprise

The September Monthly Medal, sponsored by McFeeter’s Motor Museum, was played on Saturday with the field of 68 returning some variable scores.

Barry Shine won the A-Grade with 72 nett, on count back from Alf Davies. Both were consistent scorers but the handicap helped Barry.

The B-Grade saw Garry Collits defend his title from last month, proving that a good holiday lasts a long time. His 69 nett was a good margin ahead of runner-up Scott Kirkman on 73 nett.

James Morgan blitzed the C-Graders with his 62 nett, but unfortunately for him the medal went to Don Ridley with 68 nett.

James still gets his prize though.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, going to: 62 – J Morgan; 68 – D Ridley; 69 – G Collits; 71 – B Squires; 72 – B Shine, A Davies, R Besgrove; 73 – S Kirkman, M Cartwright, R Taylor, B Doyle; 74 – S Sallaway, D Bernardi, S Grallelis, A Borger and 75 – J Zannes, R Morris, D Churchill.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – J Morgan; 18th – S Kirkman. Scott scored the only ‘2’ of the day. Danny Acret was the lone visitor, enjoying the company of old friends if not the weather.

With the greens under renovation it seemed that 3-putts were the norm as well as challenging. The ‘borrow’ was sometimes difficult to determine and putts bobbled hither and tither. But the greens were generally receptive to high approach shots. ‘At Card Draw for the Day’s Comp’ went to Paul Kay.

COUNCIL COMMENTS

Life as a Councillor isn’t what most people think it is. I’ve been in the job for two years now and I can tell you it is very time consuming but also very enjoyable. It can be disheartening to hear negative comments from the public regarding the progress of things being done around town, whilst Council is very busy getting things done for our beautiful town.

I want to use my time here to explain how a week in local government looks. It involves talking to many groups in our community as well as other councils and governments.

To start the week, I attended a meeting with the Forbes Bird Show committee. The next day, I chaired a meeting with the Infrastructure committee regarding Spooner Oval, Lake Forbes, toilets at Grinstead Oval, heated pool, mobile grandstand to name a few.

Next, was a meeting with the Traffic Advisory committee as well as meetings with the Forbes Netball Association, the Jockey Club and with a disgruntled resident.

Being a Councillor is very busy and there are many things happening every single day. I do this job because I want to make a difference to the community and make it a better place for my family.

The Mayoral election is coming up this month and I will work with whoever is elected. I believe if Councillor’s are united, we can achieve great things for our community.

Inspiring Future Generations Through Cultural Education

Aboriginal culture and history were celebrated at the annual Forbes Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre NAIDOC Day held on Monday. The Forbes Indigenous community were joined in their festivities by various local schools, community members and service providers.

This year’s event was held under the NAIDOC theme ‘Because of her, we can!’. The theme celebrates the essential role that women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at community, local, state and national level.

The celebrations were started off with a smoking ceremony, an ancient custom among Aboriginal Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke to pay respect to the land of country. The smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties.

Proving to be very popular, especially among the children who attended, were traditional dances performed by the Lore men from the local Wiradjuri tribe Yarangirri Holmes, Uncle Kyle Baxter and Uncle Blake Baxter. Traditional dances generally portray battles, hunting and animals which were both prey and totems. Children who volunteered, were lucky enough to participate in some of the dancing activities.

The Forbes North Wiradjuri choir also performed and there were many activities to educate attendees about Indigenous culture and history.

The event also included traditional bush tucker, Indigenous games and much more. Forbes Shire Council will be hosting a NAIDOC Day, celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on Wednesday, 12th September from 10:30am to 1:30pm at South Circle Oval.

There’s No Show Like The Forbes Show

The Forbes community will be celebrating its 143rd annual Show starting today at 9am at the Forbes Showgrounds.

“On behalf of the Forbes PA & H committee, I have much pleasure in extending a warm welcome to the Forbes community and invite all to come and join us at the 2018 Forbes Show,” said Forbes Show president Doug Nadin.

This year the show will also be celebrating its 55th year of the Showgirl Competition. It will feature some new and fun attractions such as a mosaic section in the pavilion and the spectacular Ute Barrel Racing. Keep an eye out for the Grand Parade as well.

Traditional attractions return such as the horse events, sheep, beef and dairy cattle, poultry, caged birds and harness racing. Crowd favourites including the popular dog high jump, antique machinery, animal nursery and of course, pet show will also be at the show.

“I encourage the public to visit the trade displays and support these businesses that make a huge effort to exhibit at the Forbes Show.

“To all the businesses and individuals who support the Show through sponsorship, we thank you!” said Doug.

Learning Through Play

Leading up to the show, Forbes Preschool has nonstop been creating, growing, and experimenting with visual arts. The educators and children have enjoyed preparing for the many displays and will be picking produce, collecting eggs and taking Lego to the showground for all to see.

The Preschool have been reminiscing about past shows and looking forward to the 2018 show. Vist the Preschool stand to see the fun things you can do at Preschool. Project work of term 2 will be on display.

The Forbes Show is always an impressive and fun family event which has become a tradition in rural life, holding an important place in connecting regional families and the whole community.

Netball News

The first round of the Forbes Netball Spring night competitions for both mixed and ladies teams were played on Tuesday night.

There is still time for a team to enter into both competitions to take up the bye teams. All team representatives are asked to please complete the nomination form and update any changes to player details. This can be done at the office.

All registration and competition fees should be paid by this week.

Anyone with enquiries about registrations should contact the registrar, Kerrie Priest.

The next meeting of the Forbes Netball Association will be held on 20th September at 7pm at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. Agenda items must be emailed to secretary. forbesnetball@gmail.com.

All teams must have a representative and will receive two competition bonus points. The format of the night competitions will be on the agenda.

Volunteers are needed to help run the competitions. Anyone who would like to help in any way is asked to please contact the committee on Wednesday. The committee all work full time and volunteer their time after work to run the competitions.
