Spring Photo Competition: The Forbes Phoenix has teamed up with Farmer From Down Under Photography to launch a spring photo competition. CWA of NSW Drought Relief: The CWA of NSW is providing grants for drought relief in NSW. This money is available for farming businesses that are drought affected and dependent on farming as their primary source of income. The monies are available for a wide range of household expenses; not business or farm related expenses. Eligible applicants are farmers or farming dependent contractors, and/or a farming dependent family (including families servicing farming, such as farming contractors and local rural businesses). Grant payments will be made up to a maximum of $3,000 per individual applicant and/ or household. National Police Remembrance Day: Central West Police District Commander, Superintendent Chris Taylor, is inviting the community to join police in paying tribute on National Police Remembrance Day. A service will be held at 10am on Friday, 28th September at St George’s Anglican Church in Parkes. National Police Remembrance Day on 29th September each year holds a special significance to police throughout Australia and the Pacific region and is one of the most important events on the NSW Police Force calendar. It is a day where members of the NSW Police Force and the community remember those officers who have given their lives in the course of their duties.

Ruby Stitt, Sally Rout, Isabelle Francis and Olivia Garland of Forbes Junior Rugby were selected as part of the Central West Rugby 7’s side. Deryck Ward got the girls involved on Walla Days and the team thoroughly enjoyed learning different skills.

More Than $1.9 Million For Forbes

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless on Wednesday announced funding of $1,963,680 to breathe new life into community and local sporting facilities across the Forbes Shire Council area. This comes through round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Forbes Shire Council secured NSW Government funding for four projects which include upgrades and funding to community services, sporting and community facilities.

Rick said country communities are the backbone of our state, and by investing funding into much needed projects such as these, we are making our regional economies and state stronger.

“Local projects make a huge impact on communities and can have a huge impact on boosting local business and community cohesiveness.

“Under this initiative projects range from small to large and each one is as important as the other. Every project is about bolstering our country areas and ensuring they continue to grow and contribute to our state.

“This program is about bringing communities together, strengthening and supporting our social connections, and creating vibrant rural and regional communities for the future,” said Rick.

Mayor of Forbes Shire Council, Graeme Miller welcomed this funding, saying that Forbes has benefitted greatly under Round One of this program and further funding under Round Two will continue to help develop this growing regional town.

“This funding will go a long way towards providing upgrades to sporting equipment and building community facilities which are greatly needed and will support Forbes into the future,” said Graeme.

Forbes Shire Council area will be granted to upgrade and fund community and local sporting facilities including:

• $1,019,734 to build and support a community focal point at Lake Forbes,

• $573,000 to activate Forbes Iconic Main Street,

• $150,092 for upgrades at the Wirrinya Aquatic Centre and

• $220,854 for a multi-purpose equestrian facility in Forbes.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?

I have lived in Forbes for 17 and a half years. I love the country feel and lifestyle that Forbes resonates.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work?

I work at H E Silos as a welder/sheet metal fabricator and I enjoy producing a first class product.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends?

I enjoy listening to music and watching my children do whatever they are involved in.

What are you really good at?

I believe that I am good at listening and using my hands to create things.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would love to have the power to rid the world of chronic diseases.

What is your pet hate?

Negativity, lazy and rude people who have a sense of entitlement.

When my two children and I did a cruise of the Pacific Islands.

American Foursomes Winners

Saturday saw the playing of the American Foursomes, sponsored by Milton Cartwright, and which there is usually much amusement. Many of the 24 pairings were intent on producing some very good scores.

The winning pair comprised of Simon Houston and Shane Sallaway, who returned a score of 69 5/8 nett, on the back of the best stroke score of 70. This was Simon’s last game as the Forbes head professional, and he was very pleased to finish as a winner. Simon and Shane scored three birdies on the front-9 to turn in 33, and then finished with a 37 on the back-9.

Runners-up were Dan Bayley/Kim Herbert on a nett 71, scratch 77, with their handicap very nearly got them home, but in the end it was a case of too many bogeys.

The ball sweep went to 72 ¼, going to: S Houston/S Sallaway, D Bayley/K Herbert, P Dawson/B Thomas, R Borger/ P Barnes and B Carpenter/ F Hanns. The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Grierson and 18th – P Dawson.

While the recently scarified greens ensured the pins were vulnerable to good chips, the vagaries of scared lines and grass tufts played havoc with many short putts.

The pair of Peter Barnes and Bob Borger used a beautiful tee shot on the 1st which had easily found the green, but then they four putted. If it was not the putts that caused problems it was the dry creek bed that found players in difficult positions.

Meniscus Tears Part 2

Whether due to trauma or degenerative changes, a torn meniscus will often present with pain and swelling in the knee joint and difficulty straightening the knee. Sometimes there may also be a history of painful clicking or locking. Manual testing and MRI can confirm the diagnosis of a meniscus tear.

Whenever possible, physiotherapy is considered the first line of treatment when there are symptoms of a meniscal tear. This involves strengthening exercises, icing to reduce swelling and avoiding activities that put pressure on the joint such as pivoting, squatting or repetitive bending of the knee.

One of the main functions of the knee joint meniscus is to absorb shock. Luckily, the muscles around the knee also function as shock absorbers. Research has shown that as muscle strength around the knee increases bone stress decreases and therefore pain and dynamic stability improve.

If, after a few weeks of conservative management, pain and dysfunction are still present your doctor may recommend surgery.

This is usually day surgery and involves arthroscopic repair or removal of the torn piece of cartilage. As part of the recovery process the muscles around the knee must be strengthened in order to minimise secondary degenerative changes.

If osteoarthritis is also present in the affected knee, as is often the case with degenerative meniscus tears, surgical treatment may not provide the pain relief or return to optimal function normally expected of arthroscopic repair. In fact, the research indicates that arthroscopic surgery for this population offers no advantage over physiotherapy for relief of symptoms or improvement in function.

This evening I will be attending the annual Small Winemakers tasting. This year saw an increase in entries, with 40 additional winemakers showcasing their wine.

In regards to the Federal Government’s announcement for $1 million to local councils, we are still waiting on the formal guidelines as to how we can use the money to help our drought affected community.

I attended the Reading Downtown day last Friday in Victoria Park. It was a beautiful, nearly Spring day, with hundreds of children dressed as pirates or their favourite book character. It was great to see our local member, Phil Donato dressed up as a pirate for the occasion and read stories to all of the children.

The recent Freight Focus Group meetings are proving a huge success. A wide range of topics have been discussed and much interest has been placed on how we handle the road trains and b-doubles traversing our Shire.

As Spring approaches, so too does the Forbes Show. Forbes Shire Council will have a stand at the show and we invite you all to drop in and say “hi”. It is important to support the local show as they are primarily run by local volunteers and they work tirelessly to keep the show going.

The Naidoc celebrations will be held on the 3rd September at the Wiradjuri Centre.

I look forward to being part of this event and then a second celebration on the 12th September.

PHIL THE PIRATE… Local member for Orange, Phil Donato dressed up according to the theme of the Reading Downtown Day held last Friday at Victoria Park. Phil spent the day entertaining the children by reading captivating pirate stories to them. Mason Mcmillan helped Pirate Phil with his story-telling.

Region Enforcement Squad: Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless announced this week a new specialist police team for the Central West that will proactively target mid-level crime and bolster community safety. Rick said the Chifley Region Enforcement Squad (RES) will work hard to prevent drug and gun crime across western NSW including the Orange electorate. “With the capability to identify, prevent and disrupt mid-level crime, the specially-trained squad will focus more on proactive policing rather than reactive policing,” said Rick. Consisting of one sergeant and three constables, the Chifley RES will conduct investigations into drug supply, firearms offences, property crime, and any criminal syndicates in the area. Deputy Commissioner, Gary Worboys said our city neighbours have always benefitted from specialist police, but crime can happen anywhere and resources are now being allocated to regional NSW where they are needed.

Changes to Farm Household Allowance: The Coalition Government passed legislation last week to amend the Farm Household Allowance to boost help for farmers in drought. Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud said the changes will deliver the $12,000 FHA supplement from 1st September for couples and $7,200 for singles.

This brings the total payment for a couple to around $37,000 and to around $22,000 for a single. The Department of Agriculture estimates 27,000 farmers are potentially eligible for FHA and have not applied.

“Farmers should not guess at whether they’re eligible for FHA. We recently announced an extra $5 million for the Rural Financial Counselling Service to support increased demand so please get advice from the free service,” said David. Farmers already on FHA will not have to apply for the extra payments – it will be paid automatically. Contact the free Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) on 1800 686 175 or the Department of Human Services Farmer Assistance Hotline on 13 23 16.

Forbes Badminton Club: The Forbes Badminton Club will be entering their second season. Set to start on 8th August, every Wednesday night from 6:30pm to 9pm at Forbes High School. Forbes Showgirl Grace Allen, who came third in the Sydney Royal Showgirl competition, officially opened the 2018 Parkes Show on Tuesday, and crowned the 2018 Parkes Showgirl, Amelia Tanswell.

Croquet News And Results

Croquet week ending 25th August

Roll on spring! The croquet courts could possibly have been somewhere in the Arctic Circle on Tuesday morning. However the bitter freezing wind did not deter our faithful members who turned out rugged up and ready to give their best.

The winners of three games were Merv Langfield, Bob Murray and Robin Pols. We send our best wishes to two members who are in Orange Hospital receiving treatment. It was also great to have Bob Murray back.

He must be feeling better because he won his three games with no trouble at all! Saturday’s Aussie croquet started well before the August wind swept everyone off the court. The club membership is growing and this is reflected in the attendance of 30 players on Saturday.

There were four winners of three games namely John Allegri, Bruce Field, Joan Littlejohn and Lyn Simmonds. Tony Thomson and John Brown are in hospital recovering from operations. We wish them well and a speedy recovery.
