Mahe Fangupo Named Women’s Platypii Coach

SUB ME ON: It was great to see rugby back last weekend during the annual clash for the Brad Ridley Shield played between Forbes and Condobolin each year.

Mahe Fangupo has been appointed coach of the Forbes Women’s Platypii Rugby Union side for 2021. Fangupo brings a wealth of knowledge to the role having plied his trade across the region.

The Forbes Rugby Union Club will also be holding a Sponsor’s Day on Saturday April 17 for those keen to come along.

A big shout out also to both the Platypii and Condobolin Rugby Union Club for a special night held with the annual Brad Ridley Shield. The game wasn’t held in 2020 due to COVID-19 and it was great to see so many support this special event.

The game has been played since both clubs tragically lost three players between them in the 2002 Bali bombings. Brad played for both Forbes and Condobolin and was well-liked and remembered by all. All class to both clubs for keeping this tradition alive!

NSW Senior Long Track Titles This Weekend

Organisers Bowled Over By Strong Turn Out

Players from Sydney and the Central Coast arrived in Forbes for last weekend’s $10,000 Easter Bowls Carnival at the Forbes Bowling Club. The Men’s Pairs Final was taken out by Sydney duo Terry Pappas from Waverley and John Fitzgerald from Taren Point in a tight affair with “Wallacia Wildcats” young guns Bradley Rowley and Zane Ballhouse. In a see-sawing battle, the elder statesmen got the chocolates 14-12 in front of a packed house in superb conditions. Congratulations to all 32 teams and organisers on a tremendous event.

Strong Field For Croquet Despite Rain

The rain beat us for Golf Croquet on Tuesday, 23 March.

We had 24 players for Aussie Croquet on Saturday, 27 March. There were 2 winners of 3 games, John Allegri and Ray Burridge. Big winners were 14—8 Neville Spry and Jeff Liebich, John Browne and John Allegri 14—9 Harley Stewart and John Allegri, John Browne. Close Games were:

Forbes Members Perform Well At Home

SUCCESS: Forbes Pony Club member Jake Tomlinson had a successful event including a first place last weekend.

Training has paid off for Forbes Pony Club members last weekend at the Forbes Showjumping competition with multiple placings won amongst strong classes of competitors attending from Canberra to Cobar.

President Laurie Norris said that he was very proud of all of the club competitors and that the stiff competition and tough courses they faced could only improve their jumping.

Jake Tomlinson and Ellie Glasson were placed first and sixth respectively in the 90cm in the “big ring” and in the slightly smaller levels Rachel Garland was first in the 45, 5th in the 60 and a 3rd and also secured a 1st in the 70. Rachael Morgan placed 4th in the 70, Tess Worland 3rd in the 70 and 5th in the 80 and Jemma Hodder 5th in the 70. Amy Richardson was 4th in the 80 and 2nd in the 70 and Chelsie Farmer 1st and 2nd in the 80 and 5th in the 90.

Of particular note was the 70cm on Sunday where all five placings were taken out by Forbes Pony Club riders. “Big congratulations to everyone and to all riders who represented our club so proudly.”

Netball Break For Holidays

Night competitions

The Netball competition will return on April 21. Any players who are not fully registered will not be able to take the court. Please arrive early to pay competition fees at the office.

Games were held up last week, as players paid their competition levy.

Registration to NNSW is completed online, and the links are available on the FNA Facebook page, and lasts for a full calendar year.

Competition fees are paid in cash at the office and are $50 per player per team for the first competition, and for players playing in their second night competition team it is $40 per player per team.

Rules sheets are also available at the office on Wednesday nights and must be signed off by the team representative.

Team representatives must also update their player lists on their team sheet, and confirm on their team sheets who is playing in another team in the second competition. Please be aware of the COVID restrictions that are on the FNA Facebook page.

Entry is from the Bedgerebong Road side of Stephen Field, and exit is between the canteen and the skate park.

Last week, two teams, Skadoosh and FPS did not supply an umpire as per the draw for the first time and must pay a $50 fine before they play this week.

Each team will lose two competition points and give their opposition in their next game a five goal start.

These umpiring penalties were proposed by the players in the competition and agreed to by the FNA Committee. Rulebooks are also available for sale at the office.

Forbes Little A’s Perform Well At State

FORBES LITTLE A’s TEAM: Forbes future Olympians were on show last weekend at the NSW Little Athletics State titles in Sydney.

Forbes Little Athletics Club had six children qualify and attend the NSW Little Athletics State Championship in Sydney last week in horrendous conditions.

“The kids performed extremely well and all performed personal bests,” said Stevie Jackson, Vice-President of Forbes Little Athletics Club. “It is a big deal for our little club,” she said.

Each event saw 24 athletes qualify from across NSW so competition was tough. Stars for Forbes were Laura Chudleigh who medalled in the long jump while Beau Wheeldon picked up silver in the Under 10s 70 metres overall and first place in the 100 metres. Ironically, Beau’s dad Mark won the same event 35 year earlier.

Results as follows:
• Brock Maynard U12s Javelin and came 9th overall.
• Laura Chudleigh U12s high jump came 10th, U12s 200m 21st and Long jump 2nd.
• Laine Jackson U11s 100m came 19th overall.
• Jackson Beaudin U11s Javelin came 4th overall and U11s 800m came 22nd overall.
• Beau Wheeldon U10s 70m came 2nd overall, U10s 100m came 1st overall and U10s 200m came 5th overall.
• Anderson McMahon U9s 100m came 16th overall and U9s high jump came 11th overall.

“The Forbes community was extremely well represented by these young athletes,” Stevie said. “These same athletes also received local yearly awards at Forbes Little Athletics Club recently,” she said.

Club results:
• Brock Maynard was the U12s Age Champion and the Jack Hadrill Memorial Award for commitment and training.
• Laura Chudleigh U12s age champion and overall outstanding performance and achievement.

Staines Stars In NRL Grand Final Rematch

After somewhat of a try drought, Forbes Magpies junior Charlies Staines scored a try and helped save two others including the matchwinner with Villiame Kikau in Penrith Panthers 12-10 win over the Melbourne Storm. The win leaves the Panthers undefeated alongside neighbours and rivals Parramatta with a game against wooden spoon fancies Manly last night. He also outran the fastest man in league Josh Addo-Carr!

St Pats Defeat Magpies To Win Stubby Collits Memorial

It is a friendly rivalry that has grown over the years and despite a disruptive 2020 and poor weather, the annual Brendon ‘Stubby’ Collits Memorial Day was again a tremendous success and a credit to both clubs.

The last two challenges had resulted in draws meaning this year had some extra tension despite the friendly atmosphere and it was Pats who got the chocolates with a grafting 28-22 win at Spooners Oval in front of a bumper crowd.

For Forbes coach Cameron Greenhalgh it was a great hit-out for his troops ahead of a big 2021 season. With many having had a long break from the game, the return of messrs Ben Maguire, Hayden Bolam and Mitch Andrews along with Nick Greenhalgh has been welcomed making the Magpies a force to be reckoned with in 2021.

In other games on the day, St. Pats Women’s League Tag dominated Forbes while the 18s showed why they will be a genuine threat this season with a resounding win. As for the 21s last Saturday’s contest against Bathurst St Pat’s was the final competition round for the new 21s, with the semi-finals of the six-side competition to follow.

Great To See League Back

Between rep footy, trials, memorial days and more it’s great to see the crowds back at Spooners Oval for rugby league. After a disruptive 2020, the Magpies are looking good from juniors to firsts and should be more than competitive this year. We will watch with interest. Up the Magpies!
