Local Riders Set To Shine In Showjumping Weekend

March 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

LEAP: Freya Hooper goes through her paces with her horse at a recent Forbes Pony Club event.

The huge weekend of show jumping coming up this week at the Forbes Showground will feature strong representation from local Forbes Pony Club riders.

Pony Club president Laurie Norris said that the club members had been working hard training in preparation for the event and are really looking forward to doing their club proud.

“We have over ten members registered to ride at levels from 45cm to jumps over a metre,” Mr Norris said.

“Professionally run events such as Forbes Jumping give our club members a chance to compete against strong fields and to improve their show jumping”.

Forbes Pony Club meets regularly and membership has grown significantly over the last twelve months to over thirty riders aged from four to sixty years. New members are welcome at any time.

“Please come along and see not only our own great riders, but some of the best show jumpers in Australia” says Mr Norris “with hundreds of riders at the showground this is set to once again be a spectacular event”.

Maynard The Allrounder Has Bright Future

March 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

GREAT EFFORT: Despite not having a coach or training like the other competitors, Brock Maynard finished 9th in the state at the NSWLAC in Sydney last weekend.

Some people are blessed with one skill if they’re lucky then there are those like Forbes Public School youngster Brock Maynard, who after finishing 9th in the NSW Little Athletics Track and Field Javelin competition on the weekend, is now gearing up for a run in the Western Region AFL side to travel to Byron Bay in May.

Along with Maddox Bruem, the pair have been picked to headline a U12s side that some say are an outside chance for the title. Toby Smart is the shadow reserve.

Yet for the affable 11 year old, it all comes naturally and he takes each selection and award with the same no nonsense and grace as he does everything.

“I like playing sports as it’s fun and a great way to meet people and make friends,” said Brock.

“AFL is a little new to me as I know and prefer rugby league but it’s fun,” he said. “Both are very different to javelin!”

Maynard threw 24.3m, only 64cms short of 8th which would’ve seen him take a place in the money round top 8 shoot-out but poor weather and the fact he is still learning about the sport and gaining big match experience counted against him at the last moment.

“It was a great experience and I hope I can go back again,” he said. “I do enjoy javelin though if I had to pick I would say I love rugby league the most,” Brock said.

And who’s his tip for the NRL title in 2021? “Penrith Panthers of course!” Of course.

Forbes Netball Looking For New Players

March 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday Junior Mixed Netball
The Forbes Netball Committee is calling all boys and girls to come and play netball Saturday mornings, in two programs. NetSet-Go will be offered each Saturday for players aged 5 years to 10 years, and the Tri Towns Tournament will be played for ages 17 years and under. Players turning 9 and 10 this year can choose to play in the NSG program, and, or in the Tri Towns Tournament.

A Come and Try day will be held on Satur-day, from 10 am till 12 noon, where players both new and returning, can come and have fun playing netball. Help with the online registration process will be given on Saturday. A BBQ will be running after the games on Saturday.

The competition, called the Tri Towns Tournament, for all junior boys and girls kicks off on May 1. A training morning for all teams will be held on April 24, and the team uniforms will be given out. Registration is just $100 per player and parents can use their Active Kids Voucher to register.

If it is raining and too wet for the Come and Try Day on Saturday, families are asked to come and register from 10 am till 12 noon. Parents help will be needed for all the teams, as coaches, managers and umpires. Anyone who would like to volunteer for any jobs, should also put their name down on Saturday. Help will be given to learning umpires, and short coaching sessions will be offered to everyone who is interested.

Panthers Set 102 Year Record In Win Over Dogs

March 26, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Penrith Panthers have won their second straight game with an impressive 28-0 win over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs keeping their opponents scoreless for the second week in a row and matching a 102 year old record in the process. In soggy conditions at Bankwest Stadium, the Panthers were never headed with Forbes junior Charlie Staines having a mixed game with some handling errors in the wet conditions tempered by outstanding defence. On Thursday Staines and the young Panthers play defending premiers Melbourne Storm at home in the grand final rematch.

Count Backs Decide Golf Results

March 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The Individual Stableford on Saturday March 13 was keenly contested with count backs needed to determine winners.

The Division 1 was won by Robb Webb with his 39 points, finishing ahead of Harry Callaghan on 37 points. Division 2 had three players finishing on 39 points with the winner being Matt Duff, ahead of Jeff Haley, who was a whisker ahead of Joel Tongue (Dubbo).

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Matt Duff, 18th – Dan Bayley, while the 3rd Hole Pro Shop Super Pin went to Richard Nixon who near-ly scored a ‘hole-in-one’, with his shot finishing just 2cms short of the hole.

There was no Sunday Stableford Medley, with many put off by the indifferent weather.
Our CWDGA Pennants teams did not fare well. The Division 1 team lost to a strong Mudgee side by 5-0, while the Division 4 team went down 4-1 also against Mudgee.

Hopes for a pennant flag rested with the Division 2 team, but unfortunately they lost in a close contest also to Mudgee.

The sixes competition finished the second week of finals with Still Trying and Hook, Drive & Sink It going straight to the main draw grand final. Play-offs involve Just for Fun vs Jit n Miss, and Cowhands v Part Time Putters.

The plate finalists are Hackers & Wacker’s and Forbes Auto, with Bush Divas vs Lost in the Trees and Banana Split Pants vs Grant Howell AE in the play-offs.

Players names are needed for the presentation dinner while the Sanderson Memorial day is set for March 27.

Red Bend And Magpies To Host Junior League Carnival

March 19, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BRAINS TRUST: Red Bend league coaches Kai Merritt and Troy Read (U16’s), Colum Hopkins (U17’s league tag & president), Rodney Morrison (U10’s), Daniel Buckmaster (U12’s), and Paul Kelly (U14’s).

Red Bend along with Forbes Magpies will be co-hosting a rugby league carnival on April 24 between Red Bend fields and Spooner’s Oval.

In a real plus, organisers are getting plenty of registrations for older divisions but seek anyone especially U10s to U16s who wants to try league in a non-competitive, fun environment.

Colum Hopkins (3rd from left), President of Red Bend Junior Rugby League said nominations had come from as far as Cobar with others throughout the Central West also registering.

“We encourage anyone from all ages to come on April 24. There’s no obligation to play on and our emphasis is on having fun,” said Mr Hopkins.

“This day wouldn’t be possible without our co-hosts Forbes Magpies and sponsors who are all committed to developing rugby league in our region.

“The carnival is also a tremendous opportunity to try something new, keep fit and meet new people while existing players get a chance to have a hit out before the season starts next week.”

More info can be obtained from the Play Rugby League website or the Red Bend College Facebook page. All U8’s wanting to play this season are encouraged to register.

March 12, 2021 by Maggi Barnard
