Netball Full Steam Ahead

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Regional All Age Carnival
The Forbes Netball Association hosted their annual Regional All Age carnival on Sunday, with numbers showing a great support for the day in Forbes.

Over 500 hundred players played more than 260 games of netball during the action packed day. Teams travelled from all parts of the state from West Wyalong, Temora, Gilgandra, Leeton, Orange, Dubbo, Cowra, Blayney, Griffith, Parkes, Cootamundra, Junee and Forbes.

The carnival was cancelled last year because of COVID and players of all ages made up for the lost year. Thank you to Forbes Shire Council for preparing the grounds at Stephen Field so the carnival could be played.

Junior Mixed Netball
The Tri Towns Tournament scheduled to start this week has been cancelled. Parkes Netball committee informed Forbes last week that they were withdrawing from the competition, and a meeting with parents was held and it was decided to move the Forbes Junior Mixed Netball competition to mid-week.

The Junior mixed competition will be run on a Wednesday night, in line with the very successful Spring senior night competitions. Games will be played at 5 pm and 6 pm starting in August and the competition will continue through the spring.

NetSetGo
NetSetGo will continue each Saturday during the winter months at 9:30 am for one hour and will be a stand-alone program. Players aged 5 years to 10 years can join in the fun of NetSetGo and learn all the skills ready for competition games.

Netball Night Comp

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

There are still four rounds to be played in the Forbes Netball Night competitions for both mixed and ladies teams. Finals will be played on June 9 between the two top teams on the point score ladder in each division.

Last week Chili Netters did not supply an umpire for the first time and will pay a $50 fine, give their opposition a 5 goal start in their next game, and lose two competition points.

All umpires who are representing their teams in their umpiring duty are reminded that they cannot use their phones while they are umpiring. The majority of games will either have a badged umpire or committee member as one of the umpires, for support for any umpires. Teams are only allocated to supply one umpire per night.

Platypi Win Firsts, Seconds And Women’s

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Platypi XV pipped a gallant Orange City side 25-22 at home in round three of the Blowes Menswear Cup. Seconds had a handy win 40-14 while the Women’s won by forfeit and the Colts were thrashed 52-13. Over the next few weeks the Platypi will face Dubbo and Bathurst in what will give the club a better idea where they sit in sea-son 2021.

Ray Sets Record With Another Three Game Day

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

HAMMER SHOT: Participants enjoyed Aussie Croquet last Saturday May 1 with some 21 players turning out.

Aussie Croquet on 1 May saw a small number of 21 players as some were involved in the Heritage weekend, some on the sick list and others holidaying.

There were only three winners of all three games namely Ray Burridge, Bob Murray & Kevin Rubie. Congratulations to all three players. In the recent scores I notice that Ray Burridge has won all three games in Aussie Croquet for the last seven weeks. Congratulations Ray, I am sure that this is indeed a record.

Close games: Jill Rubie and John Mac-Cullagh 14 def Bill Scott and Helen McQuie 13, Cheryl Toohey and Merv Langfield 14 def Jeff Liebich and John MacCullagh 12, Colleen Liebich 14 def Jeff Liebich 12 and Elvy Quirk and Cheryl Toohey 14 def Marie Spry and Colleen Liebich 12.

Our new shade area is certainly going to be a popular spot as was seen on Saturday on a very warm morning. Once again many thanks to the small number of members who volunteer – it is very much appreciated.

Red Bend Special Sports Day 40 Year Anniversary

May 7, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

When Diane Decker started the Red Bend Special Sports Day with some other dedicated volunteers she could have never envisaged it would remain one of the flagship local events on the social calendar some 40 years later. After COVID canned last year’s event it was great to see all the NDIS providers in the region make an effort to come back and support the event.

Lachlan PSSA Cross Country Held In Forbes

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

OFF AND RACING: Students from across the region converged on Forbes this week for the Lachlan PSSA Cross Country trials.

This week the Lachlan PSSA Cross Country were held at Forbes Racecourse with a strong turn-out of students from across the region from many centres and towns including Dubbo, Cowra and Eugowra.

Winners on the day were guaranteed a spot in the Western Trials on Wednesday June 9 at Geurie with the top 6 making it through. From there the winners proceed to the State PSSA titles on July 16 to battle it out against the top junior distance runners in the state.

Forbes turned on beautiful weather and the action track side was just as spectacular with some tight and intriguing racing throughout the day to keep the large crowd entertained in one of the first PSSA events since COVID.

Participants arrived at 10:30am for a walk through before the main action began at 11:15am with the Under 12/13 years boys over 3000 metres closely followed by the Under 8/9 years girls 2km run.

Fresh from the recent State titles at Homebush, Forbes was well represented with many local hopes in the field including Brock Maynard who has enjoyed previous success at the same meet previously. The trials finished with the Under 10 years girls at 12:30pm before official presentations and formalities.

A big congratulations to all participants and we can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Thanks again to all the local volunteers and families who also made this happen. Your support helped make the day a raging success and we could not have done it without you!

More MX Action This Weekend After NSW Champs Success

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

RACING: Forbes Auto Club will be holding another event this weekend at the track in what is sure to be a bumper day. Photo courtesy of Sheree Griffin and Forbes Auto Club.

Forbes Auto Sports Club hosted its first-ever championship meeting earlier this month on April 10 and April 11 in a real boost for the club.

In an action-packed weekend full of racing, the 2021 New South Wales Senior Track Championships produced five different class winners after two days of very competitive action.

Junior classes were dominated by Forbes local riders with Forbes’ Michael Price claiming second place in the U12-U16s and in U9s to U12s race hot prospect, Sam Drane, just shaded his Forbes clubmate Hugh Hope-Hodgetts for first place.

In other news, the Forbes Auto Sports Club are looking for experienced riders to come aboard as club coaches. For more information visit the Forbes Auto Sports Club’s Facebook page.

MX Round 1 will also be held this weekend May 1. Entries are closed for this event.

The track is in superb condition due largely to the efforts of numerous volunteers. Participants and attendees should also be aware there are limited transponders for hire so please ensure you are organised to avoid disappointment. See you Saturday!

Turnbulls Win Five But Hewitt Wins Diggers

April 30, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

WINNERS: Connections of Robert Lee Memorial winner SUBSTITOOTH who was very impressive in its victory against a strong field.

Steve, Josh and Nathan Turnbull may have taken five of the eight races at Forbes Showground on ANZAC Day at the Diggers Cup meet but it was Bernie Hewitt with two wins including the Forbes Diggers Cup that had tongues wagging.

Trained and driven by Hewitt, “Make Mine Memphis” the $1.75 pre-race favourite was always going to be hard to beat and despite the best efforts of Dazzle Me NZ and Maximus Red, the bay gelding won a short head over the two-kilometre journey.

Make Mine Memphis ran the first quarter in a solid 32.7 on what was a good track before splitting the field in the second quarter with a scintillating 28.8!

The Turnbull family meanwhile had a day to remember with five of the eight winners coming from their stable. Steve was the most successful of the trio with three wins and it could’ve been more had he had some luck in the others.

Saint Julien was arguably the pick of his chargers with the $1.15 favourite storm-ing home in the last quarter in 28 seconds – the fastest split of the day to knock off Royal Feeling and Promise to Rock back in third.

Saint Julien pocketed $1,852 for the win in the Forbes RSL Sub Branch Les Findley Memorial and the horse is only going to get better.

Next race meeting is this weekend as part of the Diggers Cup week in Forbes. Gates open midday Sunday May 2 for the Tab Carnival of Cups in what should be a tremendous day of harness racing. Entry fee is $10 for adults with children Under 16 free. Bar and TAB facilities will also be available.

Feature races are the Forbes Diggers Harness Racing Club Final and Jack Honan Memorial Final.

See you trackside!
