Platypi Play Dogs In Do-Or-Die Semi

August 13, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

CRUNCH TIME: The Forbes Platypi First XV will take on third placed Bathurst Bulldogs this weekend in Bathurst in a bid to stay alive in the Blowes Menswear Central West Rugby Championship.

For those who attended the Ronald McDonald House Orange fundraiser at Grinstead Oval in Forbes last Saturday, they would have been given a preview of semi-final football come early when the Forbes Platypi XV held on to beat the Dubbo Kangaroos 29-26 in front of a parochial local crowd in what was their last home game for the season.

Despite the difficult task of now having to win the Blowes Menswear Central West Rugby Championship on the road this sea-son – a feat not beyond the Platypi, it was also the ideal tune up for what lies ahead this weekend when fourth placed Forbes – who finished with a record of seven wins, seven losses and a draw and a neat 0 points differential, take on the Bathurst Bulldogs in Bathurst in a winner-takes-all minor semi-final.

Cowra will host Orange Emus in the major semi after beating them last week 23-12 at home. The winner will progress to a home grand final while the loser will play the winner of Bathurst v Forbes.

Seconds meanwhile will have an off season to ponder where it all went wrong after their year wound up with a fifth placed finish. Despite glimpses of brilliance, the COVID pandemic, a lack of continuity and squad changes made season 2021 a trying one indeed but one the club can still build on.

In brighter news Forbes Junior Rugby Club were confirmed as Central West Junior Rugby Champions for 2021 and hosted the semi-finals over the weekend for Under 12s through to Under 16s. It has been a massive effort from the club.

With the end of season here mark it down in your calendars, the Forbes Rugby Union Club will also hold it’s presentation night on September 3 with more information available closer to the date.

Supporting Ronald McDonald House Orange

Forbes Rugby is playing its part in the Central West Rugby Fundraising Challenge. This is an initiative supported by Blowes Menswear, who is not only a major sponsor of our competition but also a supporter of RMHC Orange, and has called upon our zone to help raise funds in support of the phenomenal work of Ronald McDonald House Orange.
Since opening in 2015, RMHC Orange has assisted at least 95 families from Forbes and surrounds. All money raised will stay in Orange to support families from the central and far west as their child is receiving specialist and life-saving treatment in Orange Hospital. Magpies Lose Local Derby To Spacemen

Forbes Magpies 18s were the only side to get a win on the weekend in the clash between Forbes Magpies and rivals Parkes Spacemen. Reserves were unlucky not to get the win in a bold display while the Women’s were outclassed by the Spacecats. In the top grade, Parkes showed many why they are a formidable outfit in 2021 with a strong 38-22 victory over a gallant Magpies outfit.

• Women’s – Parkes 24 – 4 Forbes
• Under 18s – Parkes 4 – 36 Forbes
• Reserve Grade – Parkes 14 – 10 Forbes
• First Grade – Parkes 38 – 22 Forbes

Allstars Fight Back For Draw 2-2 With Vipers

Forbes Allstars did it the hard way and late to earn a well-deserved draw against Parkes Vipers last weekend. In another bold showing in tough conditions, the Allstars came back from 2-0 down to equalize late and share the points.

Roylances Take the Medals

August 13, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

In Saturday’s Monthly Medal comp, sponsored by Bernardi’s Marketplace, the 78 players faced dreary conditions, but nevertheless still managed to produce good scores leading to close contests for the Medals.

The A-Grade was won by Jono Roylance (69 nett) who has ventured out of the golfing wilderness to ‘score one’ for the family. Runner-up was Neil McMillan who also had a better day than recent form, finishing on 71 nett.

The B-Grade went to another Roylance, this time Matthew with his 71 nett. Runner-up there was Ben Robinson with his 72 nett.

The C-Grade was won with the best nett score of the day, going to Dave Tildsley on 67 nett. He was comfortably ahead of Runner-up Allan Rees on 70 nett.

There were no players in the Sunday Stableford Medley.

This Sunday there is a 3-Person Ambrose Medley, offering $1000 in prize money. It is a 10 am shotgun start, with limitations on the combined handicap for teams. Give the Pro Shop a ring to get your group on the tee time sheet.

Panthers Drenched By Storm

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Ferrari Charlie Staines Penrith Panthers were humbled by title rivals and defending premiers Melbourne Storm last Sunday in a COVID rescheduled and contentious game in Brisbane.

With Penrith missing five Origin reps (Cleary, Yeo, To’o and Koraisau) as well as new short-term signing Tevati Pangai Jr, Kiwi prop James Fisher-Harris and Tyrone May – it was always going to be a tall order for the NRL’s youngest side to beat a full strength inform Storm team.

As gallant as the Panthers were, the Storm were far too classy (and lucky) winning 37-10 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The Craig Bellamy lead side ran in six tries to two flexing their premiership muscle over the Panthers yet mindful that titles aren’t won in August but they can be lost. Penrith will now welcome back some troops for this Saturday against the Roosters while sweating on the outcome of numerous incidents from the weekend’s loss.

With both sides having won once each against each other this season, it sets up a potentially exciting third game which may yet be in the 2021 decider and a 2020 GF rematch. Should that happen, the Forbes Ferrari may just return with a premiership ring.

Blustery Conditions For Hawke Trophy

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

TEEING UP: Max Haley teamed with Heather Davidson for the Hawke Trophy as golfers braved wintry conditions to tee up for the popular event.

In blustery but sunny conditions on Saturday, a good field of 87 players contested the Annual Hawke Trophy, a 4BBB Stableford Medley event.

Terry Griffiths is in a purple patch and this weekend teamed with Paul Kay to score 43 points for the day. Terry and Paul romped home with six 3-pointers on the back-9 to take the winners honours on a count back.

Andrew Dukes and Shane Sallaway also had 43 points, doing their best work on the front nine. Their highlight was a 4-pointer on the 7th which helped score 24 points for the front.

The ball sweep went to 38 points on count back. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Men: P Barnes; Ladies: B Duncan; 18th – Men: A Dukes; Ladies: N Deathh. The 3rd hole Super Pin went to Steve Betland.

The Sunday Stableford Medley was played in dreary conditions, but the scoring was certainly not the same.

Isaac Vale carried his form from Saturday to score 40 points and win the day. Runner-up, and also partner for the Saturday comp, was Jake Hemming who managed to get at least a point on each hole and finish with 35 points.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Jake Hemming, 18th – nil, as they all missed the green. There was no ball sweep.

Don’t forget the 3-Person Ambrose on Sunday August 15, which carries a substantial prize for 1st place. Cowra has its 2-day Open on August 7 and 8.

Saturday August 7 is the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Bernardi’s Marketplace. Sunday August 8 has a Stableford Medley.

From The Bush Wins Forbes Cup

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FORBES CUP WINNER: Gayna Williams trained From The Bush holds out Reward Seeker and Toulon Brook to take out the Bankstown Sports Club Forbes Cup for 2021 last Sunday at Forbes Racecourse.

The Gayna Williams Bathurst trained From The Bush has beaten Reward Seeker by 3/4 length with Toulon Brook third in a time of 1:38 to win the Bankstown Sports Club Forbes Cup over 1600m last Sunday at Forbes Racecourse in wet, gloomy conditions.

With rain and COVID dampening the flagship day, a solid turn-out was on hand all things considered, to watch the “deepest field to ever contest the Forbes Cup” according to caller Col Hodges who was celebrating 50 years as a caller. It didn’t disappoint.

Forbes Jockey Club started with a strong eight-race-card and $270,000 in prizemoney on offer. The record prize money saw some very competitive racing with She’s Smart taking the chocolates in the Shead Nicholson Class 2 Handicap for Claire Lever while Lockdown Gamble won the preceding event.

Yet all eyes were on the main event and jockey Anthony Cavallo rode the five-year-old brown gelding to perfection holding off more fancied rivals on a heavy track that copped more rain throughout the day.

Coming from barrier 14, From The Bush was carrying 55kgs and had brought solid form into the showcase event with four wins from only ten starts to go with two seconds and a third. The horse had never won at this distance having only won at 1400m so the challenge was there to go where it hadn’t gone before and it did.

Sitting among the leaders with the straight in it’s sights, From The Bush scooted to the front leaving challengers in its wake as they headed for the post. The Poet’s Voice cross Endaxi sprinter had just enough to keep a swarm of contenders at bay.

Cavallo was ecstatic with the win, with $22,000 going to winning connections from the $50,000 purse, while second claimed $8,950 and third a handy cheque for $5,000.

LPSSA Success For Forbes Students

Both Forbes North and Forbes Public School have plenty to be happy about after some outstanding results at the Lachlan PSSA Champs last week. With restrictions playing havoc with postponements and delays, the anticipated carnival was finally held last Friday July 30 in Parkes. Both schools have a number of students off to Dubbo for Western Athletics in Week 8. Well done and watch this space for more stories over the coming weeks!

Magpies Soar In All Four Over Jets

Forbes Magpies first grade side returned to the winners circle in emphatic fashion with a resounding 54-18 win over an injury ravaged Narromine Jets at Spooners Oval in Forbes last weekend. It was a timely win for the Magpies and a reminder of the potential the club has after reserves also got the job done in a hard fought 12-10 win of their own. The Magpie juniors also took care of business saluting 52-14 while in the League Tag the local girls also got the nod in a tight tussle 8-6.

Platypi Have Tough Day At Office

Forbes Platypi First XV side look set to finish fourth after losing to Bathurst Bulldogs 28-19 at Anne Ashwood Park in Bathurst last Saturday. Ironically, it also appears likely both sides will clash again in two weeks in a rematch on the same ground irrespective of last round results. Forbes play Dubbo tomorrow in Round 15 of the Central West Blowes Menswear Cup at Grinstead Oval with First XV kick off at 3:15pm.

Forbes Winter Show Postponed

The Forbes Winter Show has been reschedule for the 24th October. The lockdowns in three nearby LGAs, together with the restrictions on anyone who had travelled through those areas, combined with the fact that we shouldn’t be encouraging travel through those regions, made it too difficult to run our event as planned, a Facebook post stated.
We are looking forward to our new date in October when the COVID situation has hopefully settled down. Sorry for the disappointment and thank you all so much for your support. Refunds on all pre-entries, less nomination processing fees will be put through the system today.

Magpies Go Down In Arm Wrestle

After last weeks loss to CYMS, Forbes had a point to prove this week and while they didn’t get the chocolates, the 24-14 loss to Macquarie Raiders was a big effort. Forbes will be kicking themselves for the litany of missed chances and could well have beaten their more fancied rivals. Onwards and upwards though in some promising signs for first grade.

Little Magpies Win Goodwin Molloy Cup

Forbes has taken out the 2021 Goodwin Molloy Cup. Stemming from a rivalry that goes back to 2014 and named after former West Wyalong and Penrith player Matt Goodwin as well as Forbes Stalwart Craig Molloy, the cup is played across all competitive grades with the glory going to the team with the most wins on the day.

Allstars Back To Drawing Board

It was a game to forget for Forbes Allstars who came crashing back to reality with a 3-0 loss to Parkes Wanderers at home. After a good run of results, the Allstars had every reason to be confident but the Wanderers got the win.
