Scarlett Lets Her Hair Down For Ava

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Two days before her 14th birthday Scarlett Garland divided her thick long blonde hair into four ponytails so each of her sisters could cut one off. Trish Craft of Hair with Style finished the job giving Scarlett a number 3 haircut. “I’m proud to have raised more than $10,600 to fund research and support other families just like us,” said Scarlett. “Imagine if this money was enough to help them find a cure and end people being diagnosed with leukaemia forever. That would be amazing!”

Scarlett is the eldest daughter of Andrew and Kathy Garland of Wirrinya’s five daughters. Second oldest is Olivia (11), Polly (9), Willa (7) and Ava (3). Ava was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in June last year. “She was diagnosed within 12 hours of seeing a doctor in Forbes,” said Kathy and “commenced treatment within 36 hours.”

During Ava’s intense treatment, Scarlett boarded at Red Bend and Olivia, Polly and Willa lived with their aunt in Orange. Ava is now home whilst undergoing oral chemotherapy. “Things that may have annoyed me nine months ago, don’t even phase me anymore, it is just so nice to have the gang back together,” said Kathy. Scarlett made the decision to participate in the Leukaemia Foundation’s 2017 World’s Greatest Shave for a Cure to support her younger sister through two years of treatment.

“It was a long way out when Scarlett made her decision to shave her hair off, but she never changed her mind. She wasn’t even nervous on the day,” said Kathy. “It will be fun to grow my hair back at the same time as Ava does,” said Scarlett. “Thank you so much to everyone that
has left nice messages and donations, you have all helped me become the 14th highest fundraiser in Australia,” said Scarlett.

Tom Maslin, school captain at St Lawrence’s also participated in the World’s Greatest Shave as did Graeme (Dorsey) Uphill their bus driver. He had his eyebrows and moustache shaved off. In all, a total of nearly $13,000 has been raised. “We are truly overwhelmed by the support
the community of Forbes has shown us. Some parents at the Oncology Department at Westmead Hospital in Sydney do not even know their neighbours. I just don’t know how they would get through something like this without support,” said Kathy.

Having A Laugh With Vince For A Good Cause

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Stand-up comedian Vince Sorrenti will be entertaining more than 800 guests at the sell out Forbes Rugby Union Club President’s Lunch tomorrow. In its sixth year, the lunch has become a social tradition to not only raise funds for the club but also for local charities and organisations. “We also love to get people together to celebrate our club’s achievements, especially this year as we go into our 50th season,” said Tracey Prior, Club President.

The unique purpose and simple concept of the lunch has proved to be hugely successful with long waiting lists every year of people wanting to attend. “It has just grown so much with 820 people attending this year,” said Chris Sweeney, chairman of the President’s Lunch. The proceeds of this year’s lunch will go to the Forbes Badminton Club, Forbes Toy Library, Forbes Running and Triathlon Club and Ava Garland & Family.

Additional funds will be raised with the gourmet dinner auction courtesy of Eat Your Greens (for ten people plus a champagne, wine and beer hamper) and in support of Batyr. It is a purposeful organisation that aims to engage, educate and empower young people to have positive conversations about mental health. Chris said by supporting Batyr, the club would like to bring the organisation to Forbes to run its programs for young people in the town. There will also be $1,000 prize money for a winning table in the Platypus charity draw. The tables are run by a table captain who sells nine tickets to friends. “This concept is very simple and easy to run, and it also makes the event very social and community orientated,” said Chris. “That is what rugby is all about: community, friendship and mateship.”

If you would like to be a captain at next year’s lunch, contact the committee on rugbylunchforbes@gmail.com.

Happy 60th Forbes North!

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

In 2017 Forbes North Public School marks the 60th year of quality teaching and learning programs being delivered to students. Forbes North was gazetted in 1957 after a number of local residents petitioned to have a school established to service the growing area to the north of Forbes’ town centre.

This year’s 60th birthday will be marked by a number of events spread throughout the calendar year. The first of these was the Forbes North Public School 60th Birthday Fair, an expanded version of the school’s usual annual fete. The fair was held in the school grounds on Saturday, 4th March. A large crowd enjoyed the stalls, rides, food and entertainment on offer. It was wonderful to see so many past students and staff members in attendance.

Forbes North’s dedicated staff and energetic and supportive Parents and Citizens committee made sure that there was plenty to see and do for all. A very comprehensive display of memorabilia including class photos, newspaper clippings, old school plans, teaching and learning resources, text books and readers proved to be the biggest drawcard. Many ‘old boys’ and ‘old girls’ took the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and relive the glory days of their primary school years.

Former Forbes North school captain, and now Mayor of Forbes, Cr Graeme Miller was on hand to cut the 60th birthday cake with current captain Kobe Quirk in a fitting celebration of the past 60 years.

Forbes North Public School is on a journey – a quest for continual improvement, for the school as a whole and for each and every individual that walks through the gates each day. The school’s mission statement: learning for life through quality teaching in a safe and caring environment, is supported by the simple mantra of being better today than we were yesterday.

The dedicated staff at Forbes North work tirelessly to identify the individual learning needs of every child and to provide the most effective learning opportunities to address these needs each day. The level of support provided to the students at Forbes North is virtually unsurpassed, as the school has made significant investment in providing expert personnel to work with the children and to support the development of learning programs that target areas of need identified in individuals, groups and whole cohorts.

The students and the classroom teachers are supported in quality educational delivery by two learning support teachers, an intervention teacher, a reading recovery teacher and a speech pathologist. Coordinating this team approach is Forbes North’s instructional leader, who not only works with the students, but also identifies the best available professional learning for staff to access so they are well-equipped
to address their students’ individual needs.

Further support for the students and teachers is provided by Forbes North’s equally dedicated team of learning support officers – there are eleven in total – who work in every classroom every day, and the school’s Aboriginal education officer who provides a vital link to support
services for our Aboriginal students and their families.

Our learning support team are equally adept at providing extension opportunities for students who are working beyond their expected stage level in any number of key learning areas, or subjects. The primary extension program (PEP) focuses on the development of higher order thinking skills and include students in both stage 2 and stage 3 (years 3/4 and 5/6). Students are also able to access the Lachlan Enrichment
and Engagement Program (LEEP) through Forbes High School in conjunction with other neighbouring public schools.

The recent addition of a sensory room at Forbes North also allows our learning support staff to work with students who will benefit from activities that stimulate and improve their fine and gross motor skills.

For the past 60 years Forbes North has been recognised for the quality programs it provides to educate the whole child. As a foundation school in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, Forbes North promotes a healthy lifestyle encompassing the preparation of meals from the paddock to the plate. More than just planting, harvesting and cooking, the kitchen-garden program also provides students
with real world experiences in mathematics, biology, physics and chemistry, as well as opening up a wide variety of literacy-based activities to enhance reading and writing skills.

Class teachers are supported by a fully qualified and experienced chef and a garden specialist in providing high quality learning experiences. The focus on healthy living and, in particular, maintaining a healthy diet is further emphasised through our daily crunch and sip fruit break.
A strong focus on the academic, social and cultural well-being of the students is complemented by providing access to 150 minutes of structured physical activity throughout each school week. All students participate in the school’s structured daily fitness program, developing skills and learning the rules of a variety of sports through fun, progressive, modified games. K-6 vertical sport groups, which run
every Friday, further enhance the level of skill development as the older students have the opportunity to mentor and coach
their younger school mates. Forbes North also provides access to a range of expert coaches in a variety of sports through their involvement in the sporting schools program.

The opportunity to influence future planning and the direction of teaching and learning at Forbes North is a responsibility not taken lightly by the school’s Student Parliamentarians. The nine Ministers and eight Shadow Ministers play an important role in ensuring that the students’ voices are heard when it comes to establishing programs and activities that will enhance the educational opportunities for all students.

With portfolio areas including sport and recreation, entertainment and fundraising, communication and technology, and environment, health and safety, our student leaders have vital roles to play in planning, assessing and evaluating many aspects of school life at Forbes North. Focusing such importance on all aspects of student development can be quite a challenge for the staff at Forbes North Public School, but it is a challenge eagerly accepted every day.

The Tribe Is Back In The House

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

What a journey it has been since 2013 when local band House of Tribes first performed at the Calarie River Arts talent quest. The band originally had three members, siblings Paige and Jake Ellison and Greg Prow. “Greg was asked to play guitar with us so Jake and I wouldn’t fight, but we are older now so everything is different,” said Paige laughing. Stuart Maclean joined the band in the summer of 2014, and completing the current lineup is bassist Jasio Rimene who joined last year.

Paige remembers naming the band. “We were using a band name generator which came up with weird names, when I looked up and on our shelf was the book ‘House of Tribes’ by Garry Kilworth. It is a pretty cool name and the band is our second family made up of people from other families (tribes).”

Their debut album, Paint it Red was recorded in 2015 after ranking third in the People’s Choice Award at the Battle of the Bands in Orange. “The prize was 10 per cent off on our first recording so we thought we may as well. On hearing the recording, we thought it sounded good,” said Greg. “So we wrote more songs to record the EP,” said Paige.

Their second album, We Still Have Hearts was launched last Friday at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. Jake and Paige wrote all the songs. “I wrote my first song when I was 14, called Nightmares,” said Paige. “I can’t believe how much I have matured since then. The new album channels originality and explores alternative thinking to take you on a journey. According to Paige one track came about when she could see Winnie the Pooh in the one-hundred-acre forest listening to Jake’s music. “I started wondering if I would ever forget about Pooh bear, my favourite, and then I started thinking what if Christopher Robin ever forgot about Pooh…” The song will tell you the rest of
the story.

Jake took up guitar in kindergarten, Paige has always loved dance and music, while Greg always wanted to play in a band but as a father of four thought his opportunities had passed. “This is the first band I have ever played in and I love it. Don’t let age stop you,” said Greg. Jake is studying audio engineering in Queensland, Jasio lives in Bathurst and Stuart in Orange, but distance will not stop the House of Tribes. There is going to be a third album. “Jake will produce the third album on completion of his studies, so we are going to take our time with this one,” said Greg.

Mayoral Notes…

Last week I went to Bedgerabong Public School with Cr Jenny Webb, and we handed out reusable water bottles to the students. As previously mentioned this initiative is to encourage students to reuse water bottles rather than using disposable bottles that end up in landfill. All primary school students in the Shire will soon have a Council water bottle with Forbes Public receiving theirs next Wednesday.

Phil Donato hosted his first constituent day in Forbes on Tuesday. He had a number of appointments. He is very appreciative of the use of the committee room supplied by Forbes Shire Council. His next constituent day in Forbes will be 16th May. To make an appointment, call 6362 5199 or email orange@parliament.nsw.gov.au

Our March council meeting was held yesterday. One of the agenda items was the Forbes Community Plan 2027. This new plan will be on public exhibition and our community is encouraged to have their input. I will keep you updated on the engagement process. Tomorrow is going to be a big day for Forbes. The Forbes Rodeo is on at the Forbes Showground and gates open from 10am. The President’s Lunch is also on with almost 900 guests expected to attend.

Forbes Women Support Gender Parity

March 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Nearly 90 women met for breakfast at Lake Forbes on Wednesday to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD).

The women were entertained by the talented singer Maddi Collits, while Cheryl Shirvington and Sandra Nicholson provided a Tai Chi demonstration. The guest speakers reinforced the IWD message of celebrating women and striving for gender equality with Marg Duggan, President of the Forbes Business Chamber providing information on the initiatives the Chamber provides. Dianne Green, a McGrath Breast Care nurse reminded everyone of the importance of monthly breast examinations. McGrath Breast Care Nurses assist individuals, and their families, experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological and emotional support. This support is available for free no matter whether you’re in the private or public health system.

“A breakfast meeting is ideal for working woman,” said one participant Alpana Ma- hagankar. Mother nature was kind as the morning was sunny, yet crisp and clear. “It is so nice to have breakfast cooked for us, said Margaret Adams, “”especially bacon and eggs.”

International Women’s Day has been held annually since 1911 to celebrate the achievements of women and to strive for gender equality. This year’s theme was Be Bold For Change .

Throughout history women have joined together and vindicated inequality to build a better future for their communities, children and themselves. Whether through bold well-documented action or through humble resistance that never made it into history books, women have united for equality and achievement.

Support for students: The Forbes High School Wellness Hub was officially opened by the Director of Public Schools Maree Angus last Wednesday. The initiative was developed in partnership with local community services to provide students with professional support programs.

It was a day of celebration with the school captains and vice captains cutting the cake, Maddison Collits performing the Missy Higgins song Everyone’s Waiting and a delicious lunch prepared by the Year 11 and 12 hospitality class. Students enjoyed a barbeque prepared by Forbes Neighbourhood Watch, while a number of service providers, such as Binaal Billa, Centacare, and a National Disability coordination officer set up information stalls for students. Carewest provided Fun with Drums.

End of disaster relief: The Lions Disaster Relief Funding in the Forbes Shire will wrap up 31st March. The Forbes and Dis- trict Lions Club has been providing flood relief vouchers to local residents from September last year. As there is no longer any demand for the vouchers the Lions Club will close off the funding. Vouchers will still be valid until 30th June for use. For assistance until the end of the month call 0419 463 803.

Market day: The Forbes Handicraft Centre’s next market day is on Saturday, 18th March outside the shop in Lachlan Street from 9am to 1pm. There will be an abundance of home cooking, cakes, slices, jams, pickles and preserves, plants, and fresh eggs.

Radio news: At the Lachlan Valley Community Radio AGM held recently John Berger was re-elected as president. Other office bearers are vice president, Rod Brown and Bill Stevenson; treasurer, Kerry Stevenson and secretary, Alison Coe. The Forbes station broadcasts close to 105 hours each week with on-air presenters, and do community service announcements free of charge.

Clean Up Australia Day: A total of 84 vol- unteers turned up on Sunday for Clean Up Australia Day. The numbers were boosted by a good turn out of 64 Red Bend boarding students. The volunteers collected approximately 94 bags of rubbish around Forbes. The main items picked up were drink and food containers or wrappers. During the week nine schools also took part in the clean up effort. The NSW government plans to introduce a container deposit scheme with a 10-cent refund for empty beverage containers on 1st December to help curb littering.

Glittering History Secures Future For Many

March 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Gold has played a significant role in the history of Australia starting in 1851 with the Bathurst gold rush.

More than 150 years later, the Cowal gold mine near West Wyalong announced a modern day “gold rush” last month with its board approving an investment of approximately $270 million to increase production and extend the life of mine by eight years to 2032. Rated among the top five biggest gold mines in Australia, total production is set to increase to 1.2 million ounces.

Just as all the discoveries of gold all over Australia has boosted the economy, an immediate benefit of the Cowal mine expansion is an increase in employees with 48 new operators in the open pit and the plant.

Community Relations Officer at the mine, Tony Glasgow said interviews for the new positions had already started this week.

The mine currently employs about 400 staff and contractors from the Forbes, Bland and Lachlan Shires, with 64 residents catching the bus from Forbes.

The new investment will deliver two major projects over the next four years: the E42 stage H cutback and the dual leach pro- ject. The E42 stage H cutback will widen and deepen the existing open pit by at least 80m. The pit is currently 340m deep. This has been made possible by a 145% or 2.28 million gold ounces increase in Cowal’s ore reserves since Evolution acquired the op- eration in 2015.

The Dual Leach project will add an additional leaching circuit to the processing plant to target a four to six per cent increase in gold recoveries.

Situated on the banks of the largest inland lake in NSW, Lake Cowal, the mine site has natural beauty not easily found at mines. Hundreds of emus, locally known as bush chooks, roam freely, as well as wallabies, kangaroos, 277 bird species and the dealy tiger and brown snakes.

The environmental sensitivity of the mine site has not been without controversy, but according to Tony the mine operates to very high environmental standards to ensure the least possible impact. Cowal has received ISO14001 certification for mining and ore processing operations and support services for gold and silver production.

Evolution Mining bought the Cowal gold mine from Barrick Gold in 2015 and described it as one of the most attractive gold assets in Australia. Cowal is the biggest of the six mines in the group.
