New Case In Dubbo As COVID Creeps Closer

August 13, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

With three states and numerous LGAs in NSW in lockdown this week including Dubbo, Forbes remains relatively unscathed, yet the COVID Delta strain continues to creep closer. At the time of publication, two people in Dubbo had tested positive to COVID on Tuesday evening. Both school’s impacted were subsequently closed as a precaution and all staff and students were encouraged to self-isolate until further notice.

WNSWLHD CEO Scott McLachlan has encouraged the community to follow public health orders and get vaccinated as soon as possible. With burgeoning numbers across the state showing no signs of abating, McLachlan echoed his sentiments from last week encouraging people to get the AstraZeneca shot – which has now been approved for those 18 years + and in ready supply.

As of last week, just over 40 per cent of the Central West have now had a first dose of vaccine with only a fraction more than 16 per cent having had two. About 41,000 COVID tests have been conducted in the WNSWLHD in the last month – numbers McLachlan hopes will grow along with vaccinations. The Federal Government also announced that NSW will also receive 180,000 Pfizer doses in the next two weeks with supplies expected to come into the district about August 16. Moderna vaccines should arrive in the district in approximately 4-5 months.

Community members with questions about COVID-19 can contact the Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. For information on COVID-19 testing locations go to the NSW Government website at www.nsw.gov.au and click the COVID-19 button to search for your nearest location.

Floodgates Open As Wyangala Over 95% Full

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

NEARLY FULL: Wyangala Dam is over 95% full with floodgates opened to let water out after strong winter rainfalls across the region. As of August 2, 2021 – Wyangala Dam was at 94.71%. Inflow 6,026 megalitres, release 12,213 mega-litres – flowing from gates 4 & 5 Photo courtesy of Farmer from Down Under.

As winter continues to provide consistent rainfall, one of the flow-on effects of above-average July precipitation is the filling of dams.

Airspace in Wyangala Dam has now been created and if rain continues to fall, we may all have no choice but to isolate. While no one is calling floods yet in Forbes, Wyangala sits over 95% with two floodgates open.

Forbes recorded approximately 85mm – twice its average and June was more than twice its normal falls with 117mm. The rainfall has caused flash flooding at Cottons Weir, road closures and redirections not to mention the impact on our roadways.

According to BOM, Forbes has been wet more than half the month with dipping temperatures (-2 only a nine days ago on July 28). Only three days later we had our hottest day with a top of 21 degrees.

Yet most attention remains on Wyangala Dam given that more rainfall in August could mean a very damp Spring.

Wyangala Dam is situated on the junction of the Lachlan and Abercrombie rivers about 48 kilometres upstream from Cowra in Central West NSW. The dam is about 320 kilometres west of Sydney and its storage capacity of 1,217,000 megalitres is more than twice the volume of Sydney Harbour.

The dam is named after Wyangala Station, one of the properties on which it was built. By the early 1900s it was clear that further development of the Lachlan Valley required a dam to regulate variable river flows. Following completion of NSW’s first dam for irrigation – Burrinjuck on the Murrumbidgee River – work started in 1928 on the state’s second major irrigation dam, Wyangala on the Lachlan River and was completed in 1935.

Today the dam provides water for a far larger area following the dam’s enlargement in 1971 and fourfold increase in storage capacity.

Forbes Shire Residents Support 2021 Feed Appeal At Woolworths

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Back in June, Woolworths and FareShare launched the 2021 Feed Appeal to help meet the 47% increase in demand for food relief in communities across Australia in the past 12 months.

One hundred percent of all funds raised in NSW are being distributed to local food relief charities either as grants, or the direct donation of ready-to-eat meals – including any from Forbes during June. Feed Appeal grants enable local charities to purchase equipment like fridges, freezers, ovens and vans, building their capacity to receive, prepare and distribute more food.

This year’s funds will also support many local charities with the direct donation of FareShare meals, freshly prepared in one of their two charity kitchens, the largest in Australia.

Last year’s Feed Appeal raised more than $1.5 million, enabling 52 cash grants of up to $50,000 to be provided to food relief charities across all States and Territories of Australia.

Woolworths now donates the equivalent of over 22 million meals in surplus fresh food per year to food relief, and supplies half of the fresh fruits, vegetables and meats donated to FareShare.

Woolworths Forbes Store Manager Kathryn Simpson said – “We thank those Forbes Shire customers who made a donation to the Feed Appeal – that 50c means a meal can be placed in the hands of an Aussie in need.”

Education Week Celebrates Lifelong Learners

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

EDUCATION WEEK: Class KD at Forbes Public School were all dressed up for Book Week as part of revamped COVID-safe Education Week celebrations in place across the state. Despite the restrictions, this year’s edition was arguably one of the best yet across Forbes.

It may not have been Education Week as we know it, but the 2021 edition still had plenty to get excited about. Forbes, like other schools across the region, celebrated the week in a number of ways as children and staff enjoyed the special occasion.

Forbes Public School commemorated the importance of learning and education via a COVID safe range of activities including the popular book fair and the dress up parade for Book Week. From all reports the costumes were fantastic and inventive from Crayons to the Queen of Hearts, Batman, Luigi, Harley Quinn and more.

At Forbes North, students also focused on fun learning activities from creating joint presentations on Quokkas to problem solving and mathematics games.

Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW public education and the achievements of our schools, students and education system.

This year Education Week was held from Monday 26th to Fri-day 30th July, 2021 celebrating the theme ‘Lifelong Learners’. This year’s theme celebrates education as a lifelong journey from before a child enters an early childhood setting, progressing to primary and secondary school, and continuing their learning journey into adulthood; learning a trade, entering tertiary education, or the workforce.

Education Week is one of the many ways the NSW Dept. of Education support and assist from the very first days in childcare and bridging courses to post-school pathways. The education system is preparing young people to be agile thinkers and lifelong learners. “Learning can look different for individual students and our system is equipped to provide learning support for all of our students”, the NSW Dept. of Education website says.

“Learning often takes place beyond the classroom and we should celebrate all types of learning that occurs at all levels across our education system”. For more on Education Week 2021 go to – www.education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/education-week

Large Numbers Turn Out For Tree Day In Forbes

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SPECIAL TREE-TMENT: The Forbes Waste Depot was the site for this years National Tree Day initiative with volunteers coming along to help plant a tree.

Despite the limitations of COVID and the wet and gloomy conditions, Central West Lachlan Landcare, Forbes Shire Council and Planet Ark along with a strong number of Forbes Shire volunteers came together to plant trees for National Tree Day 2021.

This year’s Forbes National Tree Day event was held at Forbes Waste Depot, Daroobalgie Road, on Saturday, July 31.

“This is such an important initiative for our community and our environment,” said Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM.

“It will be something we all look back on in the years to come with great pride,” Phyllis said.

National Tree Day, proudly sponsored by Toyota Australia, was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John. It has now grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature protection event as we strive to see over one million new trees, shrubs and grasses planted each year.

National Tree Day is a call to action for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. Each year, about 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them. It’s a day to venture outdoors and get to know your community, and most importantly, to have fun!

The last Friday in July is dedicated to schools celebrating Tree Day. Each year, more than 3000 students participate nationwide in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them.

Tech Boost For Regional Schools

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The technology upgrade for all regional schools in NSW is ahead of schedule, with stages two and three of the historic $365.8 million Rural Access Gap program under way. Following a successful pilot program in the Dubbo, Narrabri and the Northern Bor-der regions, 1000 rural and remote public schools are now receiving a top-to-bottom digital upgrade.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the program will ensure students living in the bush have the same access to technology as their city counterparts.

“The Rural Access Gap Program will pro-vide our rural and remote schools with superior connectivity, unparalleled in the country,” Mr Barilaro said.

“This means that teachers in our regions have the tools, training and support they need to deliver lessons in ways not possible before. This is about ensuring students have access to an education without boundaries.”

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the Rural Ac-cess Gap program connects students and teachers to the best educational resources available through cutting edge learning and teaching technology.

“Our commitment to regional students is that they have equal access to educational resources and modern equipment, no matter where they live,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Technology allows us to do this. More than 30,000 devices, including laptops and video-conferencing facilities, will be added to the network with more to follow.”

DROUGHT STORY: Forbes farmer David Kalisch walks into a dust storm in January 2020. Photo by Joel Brian Pratley.

Forbes farmer part of award-winning photo: Forbes farmer David Kalisch (pictured) is the centre of a remarkable drought photo taken by Sydney-based photographer Joel Brian Pratley.

Pratley has since accepted the National Photographic Portrait Prize from isolation in Redfern for the image taken in drought-affected western New South Wales last year.

He told ABC in an interview – “I was in Forbes in central NSW in January 2020 helping to create a film to raise funds for those doing it tough on the land, as both drought and bushfires caused devastation across the country. All at once, a huge dust storm swept over, obliterating the horizon.

“We were on the edge of Dave’s property and what you could usually see was fence line in the distance, the cattle, a bit of vista, but all of that kind of swept over and [there was] this kind of uncertainty,” Pratley said.

“We got Dave to walk off into the distance because his cattle were just out of frame and I just feel like that was a really strong moment when he was striding off with that kind of stoicism.”

Judges of the National Photographic Portrait Prize agreed.

“The vastness of the landscape turns farmer David Kalisch into an anonymous presence, leaving a space for us to consider our own place inside nature,” they said.

Farewell Emma: The Phoenix Group of Newspapers would like to say farewell to Emma Henderson who after only a short stay has decided to pursue other opportunities. Emma left quite an impression in such a short amount of time and we are sorry to see her go. All the best!

Scammer Alert: At least two businesses and one resident have been impacted by scammers the past week with everything from fake social media pages taking payments through to fake QR codes and phony ATO calls. Locals are asked to stay alert and contact police if they feel they have been targeted by scammers.

Local Government Week This Week: Local Government week is this week August 2-8 and is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the community. This year’s theme is “Locally Led” and Forbes Shire Council has been celebrating the role they play in the community by sharing some of the amazing locally led projects and programs they are doing.

TEMPLAR STREET: Templar Street has undergone multiple improvements and is one of many projects FSC has in the works for the shire.

Love Learning Through Reading At Forbes Public

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Students and staff were eager to celebrate Education Week this year by promoting a love for learning through reading.

The week started with the Forbes Public School Book Fair which encouraged many of our students from the most avid readers to those who simply enjoy listening to and/or reading along with others to purchase books for their home libraries.

Despite the limitations of COVID-19 restrictions, our school made record sales. We are thrilled to know that our students have added to home libraries, their imaginations and time with loved ones at home sharing a story or two having purchased books.

The highlight of the week however, was the Book Character parade, where book characters were brought to life by both staff and students who proudly showed off their costumes by parading to music in front of the school.

While we did miss having parents, carers and our wider school community on site to join in the fun of the book fair, parade and classroom activities, we were grateful during these current times to be able to come together as a whole school to celebrate a love for learning through reading.

Residents Urged Not To Ignore Life-Saving Test

August 6, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SILENT KILLER: Bowel Cancer kills 54% of men and claims over 100 lives each week making it the second most fatal of all cancers in Australia. Over 15,000 new cases are diagnosed each year – approximately the size of Parkes.

New figures from the Cancer Institute NSW show that in 2021, almost 226 people in Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) will be diagnosed with bowel cancer and around 81 will die from the disease.

However, experts say a simple test could change this. Taking part in regular bowel cancer screening can help detect cancer early and, in some cases, help to prevent cancer by picking up changes before cancer develops.

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program sends a bowel cancer screening test kit to all eligible Australians aged 50 to 74, every two years. This kit, which can be done in a person’s home, can detect potential warning signs of bowel cancer at a very early stage, before symptoms develop.

Currently in NSW, only 40.8 percent of test kits sent out by the
WNSWLHD Director Cancer Services and Innovation Dr. Ruth Jones, also urged men and women aged 50 to 74 to screen for bowel cancer.

“Around 81 people in WNSWLHD will lose their life to bowel cancer this year. My message to everyone in our community is do the test when it comes in the post. Don’t put it off. This piece of mail could save your life. We need people to stop putting the test away in a drawer and forgetting about it.”

Over the past five years, the NSW Government, through the Cancer Institute NSW, has invested more than $25 million in bowel cancer, including for public awareness and education campaigns, and grants to local community and health organisations to promote bowel cancer screening.

For more information on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, visit cancer.nsw.gov.au and if you have any symptoms or change in bowel habits, please talk to your GP.
