Our Gal

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Veva MacCullagh

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
I’ve lived in Forbes since I was a toddler and have enjoyed a good life among good friends and a supportive family.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I’m retired and love volunteering at Jemalong Residential Village, teaching Tai Chi and helping with Friday’s Happy Hour. I’m on the Forbes Riding for the Disabled (RDA) committee, and organise the roster and volunteers. I am on oxygen 24/7 but I help as best I can.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
I love country music musters and festivals and go when I’m able. Along with volunteering, I play croquet twice a week and attend Tai Chi at the Hospital with Master Trainer Libby Godden. I guess I’m a people person and love to help. I crochet to relax.

What are you really good at?
I’m good at keeping busy. I don’t have time to be bored in retirement.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?
I would get more retired people out to participate and enjoy life in the great outdoors, perhaps volunteering at RDA, or having a friendly game of croquet.

What is your pet hate?
It’s not being able to do what I once could, but now I have my oxygen sorted I’m thankful I’m not housebound.

What was your best holiday ever?
My best holiday was travelling Australia in our caravan seeing all the wonders Australia offers.

Window Myths Busted

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Several myths exist when it comes to windows in homes, and we’re here to help you sort the fact from the fiction.

Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows.

Fact: This is not true for most homeowners. Replacement of existing windows and doors (provided the opening size remains the same) does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed.

Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency.

Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70 percent of energy is lost through windows and doors, and that 90 percent of this heat loss occurs through the glass. There are several products and options that can impact positively on the energy efficiency of your home.

Myth: Double-glazed windows work best.

Fact: This is not true. While double-glazed windows can work well in both hot and cold climates, reflecting energy back into the room, Low-E Glass works very well in our climate.

Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glassTM, or Comfort PlusTM, Low-E glass works in three ways. Firstly, it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun. Secondly, it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside and outside of your window. Finally, if you choose the tinted version (grey or green), it also cuts down glare. Low-E glass is also cheaper than double-glazing.

Myth: Anyone can install windows.

Fact: While technically this is true, not everyone can install windows correctly. Window installation is an acquired skill, so the more expe- rience an installer has, the better the result will be. Issues that can arise from a poor installation can include leaking, drafts, and difficulty opening and closing. It is always recommended that you use the services of a professional window installer. If you are not confident installing windows, or are not sure where to start, the team here at GlassPlace can help you find a licenced professional installer to help with designing and installing your new windows.

Golfers Enjoy The Winter Sun

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday, 35 players enjoyed the winter sun as they played in the Men’s 18-hole Stroke event, sponsored by Forbes TV and Video Repairs.

The A-Division winner was Shane Sall- away with 72 nett. Runner-up was David Earl with 73 nett, scraping past Steve Up- hill and Ted Morgan on count back.

On Sunday, many players enjoyed the Stableford Medley and, despite the brace of “newcomers”, none could get past the Sunday stalwarts.

Once again Bruce Carpenter showed his “Steady Sunday” form, producing 37 points to take the win. Runner-up was Ash Tucker on 36 points, and getting there by count back from Digit McAuliffe.

The ball sweep went to 33 points, go- ing to: D McAuliffe, B Shields, A Dukes, R Taylor and R Besgrove. The NTP’s were: 9th – G Nicholson; 18th – A Dukes.

The Wallace Cup draw is up and look- ing bare. With only two weeks to complete your 1st Round matches we need to get things rolling.

Council Comments

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The past two weeks have been an extremely sad time for our community following the loss of Peter Corliss. Peter was a much- loved Forbes citizen, who was involved in many organisations and sporting groups and did a lot for the community. He will be greatly missed.

In the 10 months since the Council election, new Councillors have been getting to know each other, and share their skills and personalities. We’ve also received many nominations following Council’s invitation for community members to express interest in joining our working groups. We will re- ceive the formal report at our next meeting on Thursday July 20 so we can keep working with you.

Under the new Section 355 Committee structure, I’m privileged to Chair the Eco- nomic Development Committee, which includes Councillors Jeff Nicholson and Steve Karaitiana. Don’t hesitate to contact us about your ideas for Forbes.

Council has resolved to establish a master plan for the old Lachlan Vintage Village site. The plan will solve some of our drainage issues, and enhance residential developments on the Camp Hill side of town. The Newell Highway frontage block is classified as a tourist zone, which opens up several opportunities.

It’s been great to communicate with you again through this column and I look forward to the next time. If you have ideas or issues you wish to discuss with me, don’t hesitate to call me on 0419 600 877 and organise a catch up.

Have a great week, stay safe, and God bless.

Montefamous’ must have album for July: Taryn La Fauci’s debut album “Cycling” is the perfect combination of stripped back melody and exquisite vocals. This neo-folk album will take you on an adventure filled with music. Taryn’s voice and lyrics will infuse your mind and heart, delivering a message of love, hope and determination. The simplicity of the melody and basic beats enhance all of the tracks on “Cycling”, highlighting the most powerful instrument on the album, Tayrn La Fauci’s voice. The perfect album to listen to on your own on those cold winter days or as background to an intimate dinner, the songs on “Cycling” will generate a conversation. “Cycling” is my #Montefamous must have album for July.

Keep clear of emergency crews in the cold: Essential Energy is asking motorists to remain vigilant around emergency response crews repairing the electricity network in challenging working conditions during winter. Regional Manager Northern, Mark Summers said, “The nature of unplanned outages means Essential Energy crews can find themselves working in freezing conditions, on frost-laden or wet ground, and potentially near roads. And motorists travelling near worksites in cold weather should exercise extreme caution.”

Essential Energy crews wear high visibility clothing, operate fog and hazard lights in poor weather conditions, and always display safety signage. Where possible, motorists are encouraged to plan a route that avoids areas where repairs to the electrical network are being undertaken or to allocate extra travel time to get to their destination.

For more information on electrical safety, visit: www.essentialenergy.com.au/safety or call Essential Energy on 13 23 91.

Forbes Riding for the Disabled: Every week volunteer teachers and helpers help groups of special children enjoy the pleasure of horse riding. To see and hear the joy of these children is something you have to experience for yourself. If you would like to become an RDA volunteer please contact Leanne Smith on 0473 509 752 or Veva MacCullagh on 0427 511 770.

Lions Club Supports Future Disaster Relief

June 29, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Wednesday 14 June, Forbes and District Lions President Ray Judge visited the Town Hall to present cheques to two local organisations. Robert “Rocky” Walshaw from SES, and Andrew Rawsthorne from Forbes Shire Council, accepted cheques to the value of $5000 each on behalf of the SES and the Bedgerabong Community Flood Fund respectively.

The SES donation will be put towards the purchase of a heavy duty dual axle trailer which can be used for transporting sandbags during times of flood. The money donated to the Bedgerabong Community Flood Fund will be put into an account administered by the Forbes Shire Council and made available in times of floods and emergencies to cover the immediate costs for catering, fuel and electricity.

The local Lions Club in conjunction with the Australian Lions Foundation were quick to assist when the local area was inundat- ed in September 2016. Funds were made available initially to help those in need of assistance for Food and Household goods with a second round of vouchers for Fuel, Fodder and Fencing. Over $56,000 was distributed to 51 flood affected families to aid in their recovery while waiting for government disaster funding to become available.

Lion Peter Bright was the local coordinator of the Lions Flood Relief and manned the office at the HACC centre with the assistance of other Lions members for several months.

The cheques given to the two local organisations are residual money from the account which was set up to handle donations from individuals and groups in the days following the flooding. One of these generous individuals was local farmer Brad Shephard who, while flood affected himself, took the time to produce a Flood Calendar, the proceeds of which he shared between the Condobolin and Forbes Lions Clubs for their Flood Relief work.

Our Bloke

Peter Bright

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here?
Elaine and I moved to Forbes from Canberra in 2005 and haven’t had a dull moment since. We especially love the locals who have welcomed us.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I’m heav- ily involved with the Lions Club and CWA. Managing the Lions Club disaster response team and helping over 50 local farmers during the recent floods was incredibly rewarding.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends?
I enjoy watching Elaine master her latest crafty project; caravanning; and helping friends with their computer and “Smart” phone problems.

What are you really good at?
I’m a bit of a nerd. These days, mastering new versions of whatever Microsoft, Apple, or Android has thrust upon us is a suitable challenge.

What was your best holiday ever?
Elaine and I once took a job on a half a million acre cattle station in the Kimberley region during the wet season. We enjoyed a lot of new experiences and hard work while looking after around 15,000 head of cattle.

NAIDOC Week Film Screening – As part of NAIDOC week, which runs from 2-9 July, Lachlan Reconciliation group will show the film “Yindyamarra Yambuwan” (respect is everything) to local audiences in Parkes and Forbes, and launch a book of the film. This year’s NAIDOC theme is “Our Languages Matter”, so it is apt that the 15 minute film is in Wiradjuri language, with English subtitles. The film includes intro- ductions from members of the Wiradjuri Council of Elders, Dr Uncle Stan Grant Senior and his sister Aunty Flo Grant.

Parkes Shire Council will offer multiple screenings at the Coventry room in the Council building on Saturday 1 July, between 12noon and 4pm. The Forbes Aboriginal & Community Working Party will host a single screening at Forbes Ser- vices Club on Saturday 8 July. Gawaym- banha biyambul (welcome all).

Leave The Gun – Pick Up A Boscar! Yes, we can now reveal that the spectacular theme for the 2017 BOSCARS Forbes Business Awards is The Godfather.

The Godfather story spans 1945 to 1955 and chronicles the life and times of a fictional New York Italian crime family. It tells the Mafia story from the inside, revealing its secrets, charms, and loyalties to questionable causes.

For the women wearing beaded dresses and gorgeous jewellery, and the gangsters in their dark double-breasted suits, tilt hats, and dark glasses, there is one commandment, “Don’t ever take sides against the family.” See you at the Forbes Services Club on 15 September.

Red Nose Day – Celebrating its 29th year today, Red Nose Day is fundamental in highlighting the devastating fact that each year in Australia over 3,200 babies and children die suddenly and unexpectedly – with causes including stillbirth, SIDS and fatal sleep accidents.

Since Red Nose’s inception, over $16.7 million has been devoted to researching stillbirth, neonatal death, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and other causes that contribute to the 3,200 unexpected in- fant deaths that devastate Australian fami- lies each year.

Red Nose relies on public support of Red Nose Day to help fund its life-saving research projects as well as education and bereavement support programs. You can get involved today by buying a red nose or other Red Nose Day product, or making a donation.
