Forbes Phoenix

Parkes Phoenix Editor

Maggi Barnard has been with the Forbes Phoenix since 2021 and loves writing about her community.

Which leisure, sporting or shop facility would you like to improve or have in Forbes?

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Meaghan Gallagher: Nothing in particular. In my line of work, I travel around a lot and can get things from all over.

Leah Byrnes: Under 18’s have to be accompanied by an adult for all movies at the cinema. That used to be a bit inconvenient. More affordable clothing stores would be nice.

Gayle Williams: I think we are fairly well supplied. Especially since the cinema was opened and the Bunnings and Spotlight development, I’ve been very happy.

Storm Season Prompts Safety Precaution

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Essential Energy is encouraging residents across regional New South Wales to be prepared for storm season and aware of electrical safety during wild weather events.

Manager Community Relations Northern, David Crough said severe storms could damage homes and the electricity network, causing unplanned power outages for customers. “Traditionally, the storm season occurs from October through to March but it’s never too late to prepare your property for severe weather by removing debris and overgrown vegetation from around the home and clearing gutters,” said David.

“Residents are advised to have a battery powered torch handy, along with candles and waterproof matches, and a list of emergency contact numbers including Essential Energy’s 24-hour 13 20 80 number.”

“It’s also useful to have a portable radio with spare batteries to keep you informed of the situation, non-perishable food, a can opener, some spare clothing and fresh drinking water.”

During a storm, residents are advised to stay indoors, unplug sensitive electronic equipment like televisions and computers, and check social media via mobile phones for updates.

“Take care when walking or driving after a storm as fallen powerlines can be hidden by vegetation or other debris,” said David.

“Stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines or any objects in contact with them, always assume they are live and report any network faults to Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80.”

Sharing The Road With Oversize Vehicles

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The grain harvest is getting underway across the region and this means that there will be a lot of extra trucks and agricultural machinery travelling on our local roads.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils are reminding drivers to share the road safely this harvest.

“Many road users are unaware of the size of some of these agricultural vehicles and hey can find it confusing or daunting when aced with these vehicles on the road.

“Farmers will be driving tractors, combine harvesters, augers etc. These are slower moving, occupy more of the road and take longer to stop. This usually on roads where car drivers and other vehicles are accustomed to driving at high speeds.

“When approaching an oversize vehicle you should be patient, reduce your speed and wait for a safe opportunity to pass. Start slowing down sooner than you normally would. Give the vehicle a lot of room. Don’t drive right behind the agricultural equipment because the farmer can’t see you,” said Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor.

Please take care this harvest and share the road safely.

For further information please contact Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor on (02) 6861 2364.

Menopause The Musical

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Inspired by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, Jeanie Linders created Menopause the Musical as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived ‘The Change’. Since its first performance, the show has evolved as a ‘grassroots’ movement of women who deal with life after 40 and all the challenges they conquer mentally, physically and spiritually.

Do you think that 500,000 Australian women could be wrong? We don’t think so. After all, that is how many have seen this hilarious show over the last two and a half years. And they love it! So much so, many of the audience members have come back time and time again to join with their sisters in this 90 minute, one act laugh-a-thon!

Maybe the attraction is the songs that everyone grew up with – The Great Pretender, Only You, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Stand by Your Man, I Will Survive and twenty more – all sung with gusto and all with their ‘new’ lyrics. Or maybe it is the realisation that there is a wonderful life waiting after ‘The Change.’

Come and see for yourself. We guarantee that you will leave the theatre uplifted and joyous.

Menopause the Musical will be showing at the Bathurst Panthers on Sunday, 19th November from 7pm with tickets for $45. It will also be showing at the Dubbo Regional Theatre on Wednesday, 29th November at 8pm for $65 per adult ticket and at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Thursday, 30th November with tickets for sale at $40 each.

To book your tickets today for any of the three locations go to www.abstractentertainment.net.

FSMC Christmas Festival Find It In Forbes

November 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes central business district will once again come to life at this year’s annual Find it in Forbes Christmas Festival.

The Find it in Forbes promotion will be running from mid-November until 14th December, when it will be celebrated with a Christmas carnival from 4pm to 9pm in Templar and Rankin streets.

The Christmas carnival will include activities from schools, local artists and musicians, a visit from Santa as well as markets for food, and hand made and home-grown items.

The Forbes Business Chamber is aiming to reach many members of the community to make the celebrations even bigger and brighter.

Forbes Services Memorial Club is the naming rights sponsor after awarding a $3,000 community grant to the Find it in Forbes Christmas Festival Parade.

Forbes Services Memorial Club General Manager, David Fitzgerald said: “We are very appreciative of the opportunity to be part of the community. At the end of the day, we are a community club, owned by the community.”

Business Chamber President, Brett Rout said: “We would like to thank the RSL club for their very generous donation and sponsorship.”

Forbes Shire Council is the gold sponsor as they have supported the initiative by giving a $2,000 grant.

Silver sponsor, Terry Bros Carpet Court (Forbes) said they were very excited to be supporting the Christmas Festival.

Members of The Forbes Business Chamber who are not located in Templar and Rankin Streets are invited to have a free of charge market stall to bring a display or parts of their business.

MAYORAL NOTES

November 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Monday we received great news with two community groups receiving a substantial amount of grant funding for two important projects.

The Forbes Museum received $64,215 to facilitate the installation of a lift. The funding will be of enormous benefit to the museum as it will allow them to open up the second storey. Access for people with a disability will be vastly improved and the museum will be able to display far more items of historical significance.

The Forbes Jockey Club was also successful in obtaining $100,000 to repair the racecourse grandstand. It’s been a long road for the jockey club with the grandstand having been out of commission for two and half years. This will be of great benefit for race days and the camel races. I am looking forward to the day when we see the grandstand packed full of spectators again.

Our Grants Officer Andrew Rawsthorne, assisted with both these applications. Andrew has done a great job with them and I’d like to remind community groups that

he’s available to assist with grant applications.

The Forbes Men’s Shed continues their efforts to get their new facility funded and built. They have done significant fundraising to bring this vital community project to fruition. I will be meeting with the Deputy Premier and the Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW and I can assure residents that we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to assist this vital community group.

It All Started 60 Years Ago…

November 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Flannery’s Pharmacy evolved from a partnership between Joe Finn and Ron Flannery just over 60 years ago.

Ron was a local lad whose family owned hotels in the town. Flannery’s Hotel, as it was originally known and later renamed The Australia Hotel on the corner of Lachlan and Templar Streets, was in the family until around 1965.

Ron went to Marist Brothers College, Forbes, and then moved to Sydney to study pharmacy at the University of Sydney. He returned after completing his apprenticeship in Bondi Beach circa 1952/3.

Ron went into partnership with Joe Finn and formed the Finn and Flannery Pharmacy in Rankin Street. At the time there were two other pharmacies in Forbes.

After a few years Ron purchased Joe Finn’s share and renamed it Flannery’s Pharmacy around 1956/7. The business has since operated under that name and moved to three different locations in Rankin Street.

In 1975 the pharmacy moved to the current News On Rankin site, merged with Michael’s Pharmacy in 1994 and finally moved to its current location in September 1994.

Ron married Mary Rein in 1957 and they co-owned the pharmacy until Ron’s death in 1990. Ron’s son, Michael, went into partnership with Mary and ultimately merged the two family businesses in 1994.

Upon Mary’s death in 1997, Michael took over sole ownership until 2001 when he was joined by Tania Dwyer (nee Baker).Tania and her family moved to the South Coast in 2007.

In 2006 Sarah Hazell (nee Miller) joined the partnership. Sarah and Michael remain owners of the business today.
