Things To Do Before Leaving For Holiday
You have a million things to do before you leave for a trip, so it’s very easy to let some important to-do’s slip through the cracks. Read through the below to make sure you’re ready for your next travel adventure!
• Pay off your bills before you leave or schedule automatic payments for your bills.
• Sort through your wallet and remove items you don’t need for your trip. Think extra credit cards or reward cards that only apply in your country of residence.
• Update your calendar. Be sure to check your calendar to see what commitments you have made while you are gone. Reschedule them before you leave.
• Put mail on hold. You don’t want strangers knowing that you’re away with the pile of newspapers at your door, so be sure to request to hold your mail. You also don’t want a mailbox that is overstuffed when you’re back from your holiday.
• Unplug and switch off. Remember to turn everything off, or better yet, unplug them, to conserve energy and money.
• Create an automated email response or a personalised voicemail to let people who are trying to get in touch with you know that you’re out of town.
• Clean out your fridge and garbage. Clean out perishables from the fridge so you’re not in for a nasty surprise when you get back. Take out your rubbish as well.
Croquet News And Results
Week ending 27th March
Tuesday, 27th March saw a good roll up once again for croquet. Three wins were recorded by Bruce Field, Veva MacCullagh and Barry White. Congratulations to those players!
Seniors Festival is once more upon us and we are inviting seniors in our community to come down and enjoy a game of croquet with us on the 10th April. Play commences at 9am but players are asked to be there to check in at 8.45am. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a game and partake in a delicious morning tea afterwards. Croquet is a gentle form of exercise while socialising and keeping the mind active.
To all players, we have reverted back to the 9am start for the winter season and players should arrive by 8.45am to check in.

Community Hidden Treasures Recognised
Nadine Mattiske of Wirrinya and Ann Murray of Manildra were recognised for their enormous contributions to their communities. The two women were honoured at a certificate presentation ceremony held at the Forbes Country Women’s Association (CWA) hall last Monday.
Shooters Fishers and Farmers MP and Member for Orange, Philip Donato presented Nadine and Ann each with a certificate to recognise their service to rural communities during the ceremony. This comes after being named in the 2017 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.
“It was my absolute honour to recognise two outstanding women from our local community,” Philip said. “Both Nadine and Ann are passionate about their communities through their involvement in organisations over many years and it is only fitting their hard work and efforts be acknowledged in this way.”
“I am inspired by the dedication of women in our rural communities who volunteer countless hours to a variety of organisations to enhance the quality of life for so many people,” Philip said.
The 2017 Hidden Treasures Roll was officially launched at the NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Narrandera in October last year. “The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll is a wonderful opportunity to promote volunteer organisations and highlight the importance of volunteering within rural and regional communities,” said RWN coordinator Allison Priest.
Easter Weekend Golf
The Easter weekend had plenty of golf activity, producing very good scores.
Easter Friday saw the keen golfers participate in a Stableford Medley, with a field of 10 players scoring very well. Richard Nixon had a blinder, scoring 44 points and as well ahead of runner-up Scott Kirkman with 40 points.
There was no ball sweep, but NTP’s went o 9th: R Nixon and 18th: R Nixon. Yes, he got them both and he got the 2’s also.
There were no visitors.
Saturday was an Individual Stableford event, when 37 players continued the high scoring streak.
The A-division winner was Dave Rhodes, who used his recent golf lessons to score his 41 points. He got there on count back from Mike Spice. In the B-division Ron Morris hit form with 40 points. Geoff Coles quietly compiled his 39 points to be runner-up.
The ball sweep went to 36 points on count back, going to: 41 – D Rhodes, M Spice; 40 – R Morris, B Carpenter; 39 – G Coles; 38 – F Collie, B Bayley, R Taylor and C Barrett. The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Carpenter; 18th – Paul Fisher (Royal Park GC). Neither got their ‘2’.
The visitors included Quintyn Fisher (Duntryleague), Lee Grierson (Wollongong), Peter Sinclair (Nelson Bay), Paul Fisher (Royal Park) and Peter Jackson (Coffs Harbour).
Easter Sunday was a very quiet day, with only the most dedicated of golfers on the course. Once again the scoring was very good. Ron Morris won the day with 43 points, a good eight shots clear of the rest of the field. Needless to say, but I will, there was no runner-up, no ball sweep and no NTP’s.
Easter Monday once again had the golfers bringing in good scores. In the Stableford Medley, Bruce Carpenter was an early clubhouse leader with 43 points.
Todd Callaghan was in the last group for the day and also scored 43 points, but lost the count back to finish runner-up.
The NTP’s went to: 9th – Peter Jackson; 18th – Michael Spice. Michael got his ‘2’, as did Ron Morris on the 9th. The ball sweep went to 40 points on count back, going to: 43 – B Carpenter, T Callaghan; 42 – G Webb and 40 – M Spice.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in the Forbes area all my life. I grew up on a farm near Payton’s Bridge and moved to town in the late 1990’s. I love living in a small country town as you develop strong and long lasting friendships.
Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have been working at Flannery’s Pharmacy for 20 years in various roles. I really love the variety of my role, the people I work with and of course Flannery’s customers.
What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I usually go for a walk around the lake very early in the morning. On weekends I like to spend time with friends, reading, watching movies, sampling some Rosé and doing housework!
What are you really good at? Touch typing, general knowledge and arguing.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? Mind reading… although, I might not like what I hear.
What is your pet hate? People who don’t know the facts before they write mindless blogs or Facebook posts… and people who agree with them.
Tell us about your best holiday ever. Going to Europe with some friends and family and driving a boat up the Canal Du Midi in France. Can’t wait to go back!
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?
Business Coaching Empowers Young Farming Entrepreneurs
Two farming businesses and a fishing business run by young producers, will start a 12 month tailored coaching course under the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Young Farmer Business Program.
Jarrod and Emma Amery run a mixed farm near Forbes and have been successful in being selected as one of the three participants. They grow pastures, wheat and canola and run a sheep trading enterprise.
Jarrod and Emma are joined in the program by Coffs Harbour commercial fisher Danny Green and Manning Valley dairy farmers Adam and Sophie Cooke.
“I’m keen to learn and grow and to be able to keep expanding our business into the future,” Jarrod said.
“It takes a mentor or coach to point out the things that we are blind to… the ‘don’t knows’,” he added.
Jarrod believes that the course will be challenging, but in a great way as it will help them focus and grow their business.
The Young Farmer Business Program is a four-year joint initiative between the DPI, NSW Young Farmers Council and NSW Farmers Association, which aims to provide young farmers and fishers with access to new business ideas, tools, products and services relevant to their skills, knowledge and experience. It promotes and creates opportunities for young farmers and fishers to connect with other farmers and fishers and business networks. It also aims to increase the number of young people in agriculture across NSW.
NSW DPI Acting Manager Business Resilience Program, Pip Job said that the pilot program would make a huge difference for the young, passionate agriculture and aquaculture producers.
“The Young Farmer Business Program is committed to promote and create opportunities for young farmers and fishers to expand their business aspirations,” Pip said. “We understand the challenges young farmers and fishers face to improve their business skills.”
“The 12 month Young Farmer Business Coaching Program will provide personalised business coaching to help them to reach their goals.”
Pip said that these young farmers and fishers all have great passion and drive to improve their skills and knowledge to enhance their businesses for strong future growth.
