Croquet News And Results

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The cooler weather has been with us on some occasional mornings but warming up later during the day. It will not be too long before we start looking for warmer clothes. We have changed our starting time to 9am with check-in by 8:45am. Numbers are drawn at 8:55am.

We also celebrated Seniors Week this week and organised to have social games of croquet on Tuesday, 10th April. Anyone who liked to come and join us for a social game and a delicious morning tea catered for by our members was invited.

We love to see some new faces and also others whom have played in the past who are now unable to do so. You are welcome to join us for a cuppa.

On Saturday, 3rd April in golf croquet, Marj and Ken Styles won all three games. Congratulations!

On Saturday, 7th April, Dorothea Croker, Jeff Liebich and Joan Littlejohn also won all three games. Congratulations must also go to those players.

Croquet is becoming a very popular sport with the numbers increasing. If you would like to have a game, we play each Tuesday and Saturday.

Our Bloke

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Jason Nottingham

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived on and off in Forbes for a little more than three years. It is a very welcoming community and is keen to support the public education of its young citizens. It is also an extremely generous community willing to chip in when the call goes out.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I am the Relieving Principal of Forbes High School but also a geography teacher. I enjoy creating opportunities for students to see what a big world they live in.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like to spend time with my wife and our three kids. I listen to music, garden, watch movies with my kids, bush walk and cook!

What are you really good at? Listening, which is an essential skill in my position. I’m also a pretty good cook.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? The power to absorb every other super power and then utilise it!

What is your pet hate? Excuses… they serve no purpose!

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Hiking and motor-homing in the South Island of NZ with my family. Getting to fly around and land at the base of Mt Cook and climb over glaciers. Excellent food and beer too!

Climate Smart Innovation

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Climate Smart Innovation for the Central West is a conference being held in Cowra on 18th and 19th April exploring the future of agricultural practices.

The conference will showcase the latest in the region’s agricultural, environmental and conservation projects. It will promote new and sustainable production methods for land production and environmental stakeholders in the Central West.

Major speakers at the conference include Mick Callan of Central West Council’s Environment and Waterways Alliance who will speak about Environmental Protection Projects in the region. Mick is the current winner of the Jo Ross Memorial Award for his contributions to the environment of the Bathurst Region for implementing projects such as “Racing to Save the Mount Panorama Woodlands” and “Protecting and Connecting Bathurst Copper Butterfly Habitat”.

Dr Paul Gibson-Roy, the lead scientist for Greening Australia will be speaking about “Bringing native biodiversity back into rural and urban landscapes”, which will touch on both ecology and amenity and the techniques used. Paul will speak about how native species are not only used to reduce soil or water surface loss but are also useful in farming systems for fodder or for their integrated pest management attributes.

A visit to one of the country’s leading dairy, “Moxey Farms”, will also feature. See how the farm of 6,000 cows manages innovative technology to run sustainably, including a tour of their new biodigester which is turning farm waste into fertiliser.

Kristy Good, the Splash Program Coordinator for Sydney Water will be running a workshop on “Living Waterways Framework”, providing participants with the skills to identify, design and promote solutions for water sensitive urban design strategies.

Tough Day For Medals

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Saturday’s event was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Terry Bros Carpets. The field of 67, which included eight players from Orange, seemed to have the scoring opportunities covered but let them slip.

The A-Grade winner was Ray Taylor with a nett 66. His scratch score of 78 equalled his age, which is a major achievement for a golfer. Runner-up was Richard Nixon, who scored 75/68. He had a good start but the back-9 let him down.

The B-Grade saw Adam Borger storm home with a nett 70. Runner-up was Jeff Haley with a very handy 71 nett. The CGrade honours went to Andrew Norton- Knight (70 nett), ahead of Greg Webb with his 72 nett.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, being distributed to: 66 – R Taylor; 68 – R Nixon; 70 – A Borger, A Norton-Knight; 71 – J Haley; 72 – B Doyle, D McAuliffe, G Webb; 73 – J Davis (Orange); 74 – L O’Connor, D Churchill, L Little, Mike Wood; 75 – A McDonald, T Leach, R Morris, B Chandler and J Zannes.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Steve Bate; 18th – P Pymont.

The Lachlan Valley Districts Golf Association annual Pennants and Championships were held at Grenfell on Sunday. There were 54 players from Grenfell, Forbes, Parkes, West Wyalong, Peak Hill and Bogan Gate clubs.

Forbes took out the A-Grade Pennants, with contributions from M Collits, A Dukes, D Bayley, T Callaghan and S Sallaway.

The LVDGA ‘Champion of Champions’ went to Mitch McGlassan from Parkes.

Many Grenfell players featured among the other grade championship prize winners but Steve Grallelis did snatch a NTP prize.

The Summer Sixes grand final was played last Sunday. The winning team was the ‘Bush Divas’, ahead of ‘Boys and Girls’, ‘Postie Top 6’ and ‘Bushrangers’.

Rockmelon Property Begins Recovery

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The NSW Food Authority again released details last week of testing for Listeria that identified Riverina property, Rombola Family Farms, as the source of the recent outbreak. It follows reports that there was no clear link to the property.

Genetic sequencing was used to test samples. More than 30 samples of melons through the supply chain, including retail and on farm, tested positive to Listeria monocytogenes.

Additional testing found L. monocytogenes in the packing area. All L. monocytogenes samples had the same genetic sequence as human cases. NSW Food Authority believes the cause of the outbreak was a combination of environmental conditions and weather contaminating the surface of the fruit, with low levels of the bacteria persisting after the washing process.

Throughout the incident the NSW Food Authority worked with the Australian Melon Association to support its members, providing a written letter advising of its confidence that all affected product has been removed from the supply chain.

The Biggest Morning Tea

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club will be hosting The Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council Australia at Kiacatoo Hall on Friday, 25th May.

The club held the same event last year and managed to raise $922 for Cancer Council with the help of some locals calling in for a cuppa and lunch.

Once again, the event will offer morning tea at 10.30am and lunch at 12.30pm.

If you are in the area, feel free to join them for a cuppa, morning tea, lunch or stay for some fun and entertainment during the afternoon. There will be raffles, skits and musical entertainment. Everyone is most welcome.

The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club is based in The Lachlan Valley around Forbes and Orange. The club was formed in 2003 as Forbes Country Caravanners. In 2007 the name was changed to The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club, drawing members from far and wide, including Dubbo, Nowra, Wooli, Molong, Orange, Bathurst, Parkes, Tumbarumba and one member from Victoria.

The club conducts approximately nine rallies per year as well as a roving rally over a three week period. The most popular rally is the week long bush rally in May, usually along a river. This gives members the chance to try their hand at camp oven cooking, often getting very competitive.

The club currently has a membership of 132 and a total of 70 caravans/motor homes and is the fourth largest caravan club in New South Wales.

One of the joys of belonging to a caravan club, are the new friendships that are formed and enabling members to embark on journeys in the safety with others.

If anyone would like to know more about our club and caravanning life, visit our website lachlanvalleycaravanclub.org.au.

April 12, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

An amendment to the road rules was announced this week by Ministers Melinda Pavey and Troy Grant. It is aimed to enhance the safety of SES volunteers and other emergency personnel at the scene of an incident where they are working in close proximity to traffic.

The new rule will require drivers to slow down to 40km/hr when approaching a stationary or slow moving police or emergency vehicle with its red and blue lights flashing, and not to accelerate until safely past.

This important amendment will be trialled for 12 months from 1st September and is the result of close collaboration between NSW SES, the Department of Transport, The Sheep Field Day has a variety of demos for sheep OEM and other emergency services.
