Police Graduates A Benefit

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The Central Police Area Command will welcome a new probationary constable following last week’s attestation parade of Class 333. Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless congratulated tall new recruits on graduating from the Goulburn Police Academy and thanked them for their extraordinary commitment to the safety and security of the people of NSW.

“The new probationary constable appointed to the Central West will be great asset to the community and will undoubtedly play a vital role in identifying, disrupting and combatting local crime.”

“Becoming a police officer is a tremendous honour, however it can be an extremely challenging and demanding profession.”

“Having recently completed eight months training at the Police Academy, the new officers will continue to receive on-the-job training under the guidance of experienced police to ensure they are adequately prepared for this important new role,” said Rick.

Minister for Police Troy Grant said the NSW Government committed to increasing the authorised strength of the NSW Police Force to a record 16,795 over this term, and that has been achieved and more.

Class 333 brings the number of sworn officers to pass through the Goulburn Police Academy to 4,596, since 2011.

Drought, It’s A Natural Disaster: Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party Member for Orange, Philip Donato MP this week called on the NSW Government to reinstate uncapped state-wide freight subsidies for stock, fodder and water for drought affected farmers. “I am calling on the New South Wales Government to reinstate state-wide uncapped transport subsidies for stock, fodder and water for our farmers who are suffering drought. Drought is considered by accepted definitions as a natural disaster, however no natural disaster has been declared for the drought despite the official DPI combined drought indicator shows that 11.2% of NSW is now in drought and 26.5% is in the on-set of drought.

New Aussie Biscuits Factory Coming Soon

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Leading disability services provider, House with No Steps will soon start construction of a new Aussie Biscuits factory in Forbes, which will increase employment opportunities for people with a disability.

Aussie Biscuits, which is one of nine businesses owned and run by House with No Steps, has been operating in Forbes for over 40 years and has developed a strong community presence. It provides not only employment and training opportunities for people with disability, but also the sense of connection, pride and independence that comes from working.

Last year, Aussie Biscuits received $210,000 from the Building Better Regions Fund towards a $456,000 project to scale up its operations.

Brett Lacey, House with No Steps Executive Director Businesses, said the new factory will create much needed employment opportunities for people with a disability in the area.

“Construction starting at our new location marks a new chapter for Aussie Biscuits. We will be able to bake more biscuits and deliver them to even more people.

“Employment opportunities for people with a disability are scarce in regional areas. We’ll be able to provide additional opportunities for Australians living with disability in the Central West region of New South Wales,” said Brett.

The fit-for-purpose factory will include new ovens, a specialised cool room and mixing room for biscuit production. Employees will also have access to a new lunch room and a welcoming reception area.

Matt Pronesti, one of 30 supported employees who works at Aussie Biscuits, has been with the company for 21 years. Construction starting on a new location has been a long time coming.

“I’ve worked here for 21 years. I do mixing, biscuit making and control the hopper in the oven, as well as some oven maintenance.  I love making biscuits. I’m looking forward to the new equipment so we can make even more biscuits,” he said.

The new factory is located at Rankin Street, Forbes, across the road from Aussie Biscuit’s existing factory. Construction starts on Monday, 7th May and is expected to be complete by late July.

April 2018 Hottest On Record

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Australia’s warmest April on record (for mean maximum temperature) has just been confirmed, with multiple records broken across the nation, according to the latest Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) data.

The BOM’s ‘Australia in April 2018’ summary also shows that the mean monthly temperature was the second hottest for April, climbing 2.38°C above average, with daytime temperatures reaching exceptionally high levels in each state. Alongside this record-breaking heat, Australia also experienced below average rainfall with last month going down as the driest April in almost a decade.

Climate Councillor and international climate scientist Professor Will Steffen said the ‘abnormal April’ records highlights the impact climate change is having across the country, driving more severe and more frequent heatwave events that are lasting longer than ever before.

Professor Will said the window of opportunity for Australia to tackle climate change was rapidly closing, as climate change driven extreme weather events continued across the nation.

“Australia must urgently slash its rising greenhouse gas pollution levels through continuing the transition to clean, affordable and reliable renewable energy and storage technology,” he said.

Low Scores In Golf Comp

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

The golf on Saturday was an Individual Stroke event, sponsored by LINX. The field of 69 produced a range of scores from very low to very high.

The A-Division was decided on count back. Todd Callaghan was tied with Ecky Dawson on 66 nett, but Todd had the better back-9 to take the win. In the B-Division it was a case of ‘catch me if you can’, as Brodie Hodges blitzed the field with 62 nett. Runner-up was Stuart Gordon, who had two 41’s with a nett 65.

The ball sweep went to 72 nett on count back, being distributed to: 62 – Hodges; 65 – Stuart Gordon; 66 – T Callaghan, A Dukes; 67 – B Squires; 68 – A Dukes; 69 – T Leach, B Tooth, K Herbert; 70 – A Borger, L O’Connor; 71 – S Sallaway, P Tisdell, R Morris; 72 – G Webb, G Pymont, J Maloy and T Howe. Club pro Simon played but was disappointed with his 70 scratch.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – Andrew Dukes, 18th – Richard Smith. Andy Dukes nearly had a hole-in-one, but did finish the day with three 2’s. Alas, Richard missed his ‘2’.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday had a healthy field. The winner was Neil McMillan who managed to avoid the trees and score 38 points. Runner-up was Ben Mackey (Bathurst) with 34 and who would have done better but fell victim to the 7th hole.

There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to Ray Taylor on the 9th and to Mark Collits on the 18th NTP. Mark scored the only ‘2’ on the day.

Please note that the 27-Hole Mixed Foursomes Championship will now be held on Sunday, 3rd June. Speak to your captains if you are seeking a partner.

This weekend will have the Forbes Ladies Open played on Sunday. This does mean that the course will be closed until 1pm. A Stableford Medley will run once the course is open.

The Forbes Open is set for 13th May. Get your name on the time sheet and also snaffle a place in the 4BBB on Saturday.

Why is Anzac Day so significant to you?

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Jemma McLennan: It is important because of all the people who fought for our country and who are still fighting.

Hugh Mackay: To remember the soldiers who died in the war for us so that we could have a good life today.

Shirley Taylor: My father was in the war and he went through terrible things afterwards

Our Gal

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Jade McGovern

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have been in Forbes for just over seven years now. I like the country lifestyle… I never thought I’d be a “farm girl” but I actually enjoy it.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work for Council and operate out of the Visitor Information Centre. I really like meeting visitors and residents alike and hearing some of their incredible stories of travel or the history of our town.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I love to dance. I dance two to three nights a week doing ballroom and modern and have recently taken up women’s soccer. I’m not sure that soccer helps me to unwind though.

What are you really good at? I can sing pretty well. I think I am pretty good at my dancing too.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would probably have to go with flying or teleporting. This way I could visit my family and friends scattered all over the country and overseas and see the world in a flash… and save a few dollars too!

What is your pet hate? Spelling errors, not being listened to and people dragging their heels when they walk.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. Travelling overseas with my sister to Italy (Rome, Naples and Florence), also France (Paris and surrounds) and then on to New York and Nashville solo.

Croquet News And Results

May 3, 2018 by Maggi Barnard

Week ending 28th April

There was such a perfect start to each of our days last week, sunny with a little chilly breeze and then warmth later on. We’re having terrific turnouts each playing day and lots of fun and laughs as we work through the games.

Anzac day saw a good number of members turnout for the march and service with the croquet club laying a wreath in memory of the fallen in all wars.

May is going to be a big month, with lots of birthdays to be celebrated on Tuesday, 1st May at the Bakehouse in Templar Street at 12 midday.

Saturday, 12th May will see a contingent of members walking in the Relay for Life in the hopes of raising funds for the Cancer Council. Come along and support us all.

A huge welcome back to Cherylin Coles, who has returned after a long sojourn in hospitals and at home. It’s good to see you back.
