Croquet week ending 28th July

A pleasant start to the croquet week, with beautifully prepared courts and a sunny day on Tuesday.

A committee meeting was held after the games had finished to discuss some current issues. This will make the competition a little more competitive in a friendly way.

This week, huge congratulations go to one of our newer members Ruth Cheney, who won her three matches and also to Lorna Field and Bill Scott.

Saturdays Aussie croquet had only 22 players willing to brave the expected rain which did not eventuate. Kevin Rubie was the only winner of three games. Congratulations Kevin!

We also received some good feedbackon the recovery of those on the sick list.

The Croquet Club is always looking for new members. If you would like to have a game, they meet each Tuesday and Saturday.

Netball News

The Forbes Netball committee is requesting nominations for the end of season awards, which will be presented at the annual presentation on Saturday, 25th August after the grand finals are played.

The nomination forms for the Chris Read Memorial award are available at the office on Saturday. The award will be presented to a person who has helped the committee during the season, where ever and when ever volunteering was needed. Anyone may nominate a person they think has helped out in any area, with the winner to be announced at the presentation.

Every team in Division 2 and 3 will have a nominated player for the Edna Jenkin Memorial Junior Encouragement Award, who has shown outstanding sportsmanship, co-operation and enthusiasm throughout the season.

Nomination forms are available from the office and thank you to all the coaches and parents who have already nominated their players.

Orange Gala Day: The Orange Netball Association will be organising a Gala Day on 12th August. It is hoped that Forbes players will be available to participate and enjoy a day of netball. No representative teams are able to play in the Gala Day. Private transport will be required.

11’s Carnival Dresses: There are still some carnival dresses to be returned. Can all players please check to see if you have a dress that has not been returned? The dresses will be handed out on the day for any players who will be playing in the Orange Gala.

Friday Netball: Anyone can join in the fun of Friday netball and boys and girls do not have to be registered or play in the Saturday competition. Friday netball will be organised every week, during the semi finals through to the grand finals. Any players or teams wanting some extra practice are very welcome to come along from 5pm till 6pm.

Forbes Business Chamber Introduces New Committee

Forbes Business Chamber AGM was held at the Forbes Services Club last Wednesday and saw a new Executive Committee come into place.

We have a name: Our lovely bronze dog outside the Post Office was named last week. Meet Rosa. Her name came from the winning entry by Amy Callaby. Amy thought this name seemed significant and relevant, as Rosa was the wife of the architect who designed the Forbes Post Office, James Bannett. Amy lives in Tooting, United Kingdom, with her husband and three children. Pictured here is Amy’s sister, Jemma McLennan who made the suggestion on her sister’s behalf.

Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank: The Australian Red Cross Mobile Blood service is visiting Forbes in Harold Street behind the Cenotaph in Victoria Park on Monday, 6th August at 9:45am to 2:45pm (three more donors needed); Tuesday, 7th August at 9:45am to 2:45pm (seven more donors needed) and Wednesday, 8th August 9:45am to 2:45pm (15 more donors needed). Bulky Waste pick-up: Need to get rid of an old fridge or lounge or even a bbq that won’t make the cut this summer? Forbes Shire Council has you covered with the Bulky Waste Clean-Up service happening on Monday, 6th August. Leave your items out over the weekend prior on the edge of the kerb. Separate your waste into scrap metal, white goods and e–waste; general bulky waste and bundled organics. We will do the heavy lifting! Snap Send Solve: Another way to connect with Council is through the Snap Send Solve App. This App lets you notify Council of any problem areas you might spot around town. Snap Send Solve allows you to photograph the problem using your smartphone and report any dangerous potholes, broken playground equipment and rubbish dumping to Council. The App is available through the App Store or Google Play.

School uniform policy: The NSW Government has announced that girls at all public schools will be given the option of wearing shorts and pants instead of skirts and dresses if they prefer. Schools will have up to three years to make the change. The state’s new policy also calls on all school items to be “affordable, comfortable and suitable” for all body types.

Mark Collits Wins Inaugural Trophy

Saturday was the inaugural competition for the Kristie Carpenter Perpetual Trophy, an Individual Stableford Medley for handicapped and social players, and sponsored by Terry Griffiths and Veronica Rebellato.

The overall winner was Mark Collits, decided by count back from four players who all finished on 40 points. In presenting the trophy, Veronica was full of excitement by Mark’s win, making reference to his and Kristie’s close friendship over many years.

Prizes were awarded for the men (presented in two divisions), the ladies and for social players:

• Mens Division 1 winner: Mark Collits 40 pts

• Mens Division 1 runner-up: John Betland 40 pts

• Mens Division 2 winner: Geoff Drane 40 pts

• Mens Division 2 runner-up: Brett Slack- Smith 38 pts

• Ladies winner: Jenny Hubbard 40 pts

• Ladies runner-up: Bess Shields 38 pts

• Social winner: Geoff Tilley 30 pts

• Social runner-up: Veronica Rebellato 27 pts

• The ball sweep went to 37 points on count back, going to: 40 – M Collis, G Drane, J Betland, J Hubbard; 39 – B Carpenter, A Dukes, M Haley; 38 – T Griffiths, B Shields, B Doyle, M Cartwright, J Carpenter, B Slack-Smith, A Callaghan and 37 – S Grallelis, R Nixon, B Drabsch, I Bown.

• The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ladies: J Hubbard, Men: B Carpenter and 18th – Ladies: B Drabsch, Men: P Dawson.

Scoring overall was pretty good with some eagles and many birdies being marked on the cards. Terry Griffiths had the best 9-hole Stableford with 25 points on the back-9. John Betland recorded the best scratch score, a 5-under par 67, shooting 32 on the front-9.

Today’s Schools Creating Tomorrow’s World

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from 6th to 10th August as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018. Education Week kicks off on Monday, 6th August, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama Public Schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year’s theme, Today’s schools – creating tomorrow’s world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the ‘Game Changer Challenge’, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today’s students were learning at a time of great change. “From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state’s schools will celebrate not only what we’ve achieved, but the future we are creating,” said Gladys. “We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally.”

Education Minister, Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure. “The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system.”

The Secretary of the Department of Education, Mark Scott said ensuring today’s students had the skills they would need to “not just survive, but thrive” in the future underpinned the department’s evidence-based approach to learning.

Learning Through Play

Forbes Preschool has an ongoing and developing program to include all aspects of play based learning for preschool aged children. The Girinya (play) Room was incorporated when the new preschool site was built to increase the current play based learning environment.

One program, the school readiness project has been developed to ensure a smooth transition for all children and makes use of the Girinya Room to develop children’s physical needs for school readiness.

Forbes Preschool’s school readiness project has been developed for all children due to start school the following year and is supported by a paediatric occupational therapist, speech therapist and preschool facilitator.

The programs are mainstream and do not target individuals. The school readiness project is also embedded into the whole day’s program of play and learning.

MAYORAL NOTES

Last week Councillors Phyllis Miller and Jenny Webb, along with the General Manager Steve Loane and Central West Livestock Exchange yard supervisor, Cassi Walmsley attended the ALMA Conference held in Casino. The conference highlighted the need for IT systems in relation to the saleyards industry. The other major element to come out was the Chain of Responsibility legislation in relation to the weighing of vehicles on site and leaving the Central West Livestock Exchange. Council has been speaking with lawyers and members of government on how to respond to the order we have recently been served.

Council welcomes the recent announcement for drought support from the State Government. Forbes Shire Council has strong connections with our farming community and seeing support being given to our farmers is one we celebrate.

Maureen and I are attending the Forbes Preschool 60th Anniversary dinner on Saturday night at the Forbes Golf Club. With their wonderful achievements in educating and preparing young people for school, Forbes Preschool has been and continues to be, a part of many households in our community.

Our Bulky Waste pick-up starts next Monday. We ask everyone to place all of their unwanted bulky items on the kerbside this weekend in readiness.

I will formally open the ‘Be Road Ready For Harvest Field Day’ at the Central West Livestock Exchange on the 8th August. This will be followed by a Performance Based Standards Demonstration for heavy vehicles.

Hand And Finger Injuries

When you think about how much we use our hands especially when playing ball sports, it’s not hard to understand why hand and finger injuries are so common.

Most of these injuries heal spontaneously, which is why they are often neglected by athletes. Many people don’t seek help until it is too late for effective treatment. However, an early, accurate diagnosis to identify potentially serious injuries can prevent long term functional impairment and deformity.

Knowledge of the mechanism of injury or how the injury happened can also help with an accurate diagnosis. A punching injury often results in a fracture to one of the metacarpal bones, commonly the base of the fifth metacarpal. A direct blow to the point of the finger often causes a dislocation or sprain of one of the finger joints. Sometimes the finger flexor tendon can pull a plug of bone off its attachment causing an avulsion fracture. This most commonly involves the ring finger and occurs when a player grabs an opponent’s clothing during a tackle.

As a general rule of thumb, if there is any deformity present, either with the hand open or closed, persistent swelling or any of the hand or finger joints don’t move as they should, it is important to have the injury checked out by a professional. Some fractures may require surgery, some immobilisation or splinting. Sprains or dislocations may require swelling management with ice or an oedema glove and exercises to prevent loss of range of motion.

An early diagnosis and appropriate management can prevent a lifetime of deformity and loss of function.

Andie Hodder: I travelled to Sydney to compete in State Age Netball. It was a huge event and I got so much netball experience. It was awesome!

Melandri and Marno van Coller: We went on a ski holiday to Falls Creek in Victoria! It was lots of fun.

Alex Drewes: My family and I had some of our relatives over that we haven’t seen in a while. We visited the famous Dish in Parkes and showed off Forbes… a town we are proud to call home.

Netball Notes

The Forbes Netball Association (FNA) completed the 2018 representative season during the school holidays, when the 12 and 14 years representative teams competed in the Netball NSW State Age Championships.

Both teams played in Division 3 at the Eastwood Ryde netball courts, over three days of very competitive netball.

A huge thank you must go to Kristy Butler, who organised the full weekend on behalf of the parents and the teams. Thank you also to Marg Spackman, for organising all the representative uniforms, supporting the teams and laminating the tent posters.

Congratulations to players and umpires, who all displayed outstanding sportsmanship, and played and umpired to the best of their ability.

Umpires to represent the FNA were Aurella White, Hannah Staines and Karen Hargraves.

The 14 years team consisted of: Gi Gi Stitt (Captain), Lauren Bate (Vice-Captain), Ellie Flick, Ella Higgins, Elsa Cusack, Gabby White, Amy Cusack, Tilly Aveyard, Bianca Tzioumis and Leah Catzel. Also to mention Robyn Kenny (Coach), Deb Bate (Manager) and Kristy Butler (Primary Carer).

All players have made huge improvements in their standard of netball, with only half of the team previously playing in the higher Division 3, in their age group.

When the team first came together in early March, the difference in the playing standard of the girls was very noticeable but by the end of the training preparation, the less experienced players had made major improvements. This improvement continued during the three days of championships, with all players taking vital roles in their playing positions.

The girls played many exciting games and rose to the occasion, working together as a team, with all players trying their best at all times.

The wins and losses were nearly even over the three days, with the team easily holding their own, to be able to compete in the same division in 2019.

A huge thank you to all the parents who supported the team.
