Flying Club’s Open Day Lures Large Crowds

The annual Open Day of the Forbes Flying Club was held last Sunday with a couple of hundred people attending the day. After unfavourable weather on Saturday, the exceedingly successful Open Day was met with clear skies and good flying conditions.

This year the club’s Open Day was held in conjunction with Bush Flyers Down Under in order to help raise funds for prostate cancer by running a fundraiser barbeque.

“The club was very happy to help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause,” said Mary Ewing, Forbes Flying Club Secretary and private pilot. “We are still finalising the numbers from the barbeque fundraiser but estimate that almost $800 was raised for this initiative during our Open Day!”

The club was thrilled with the fantastic response from the Forbes community with hundreds of people coming out over the course of the day. Crowds attending the day enjoyed taking part and admiring the aircrafts.

“Over two dozen aircraft flew in from Cowra, Parkes, West Wyalong and other surrounding areas to take part in the day, which was a terrific outcome!” said Mary.

“The club’s Foxbat aircraft was kept busy all day long doing trial instructional flights with potential students,” she continued.

The Forbes Flying Club would very much like to thank all those who helped with the day and all those who came out from town and showed their support in helping to raise funds for a very deserving cause.

Thank You For The Music Trundle

Trundle will come alive on 4th May to the only ABBA music festival in Australia. The festival is one of the most iconic events in NSW with ABBA fans arriving by car, bus and the famous ABBA train to enjoy the music of ABBA, performed by the world famous ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again.

There will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day with Australian artists including Ben Ransom, Ingrid Mae, Amitie and MRQ. The festival also features a range of fun activities including market stalls, fashion competitions and activities for kids.

It’s a great opportunity for ABBA fans, old and new, some wearing their best ABBA outfits from the 1970’s and singing along to the music that has captivated the world for many years.

Special guests, Alana Prentice and Tristan MacManus, known from Dancing with the Stars will be there teaching a few moves and judging the Fashion of the Festival.

Sanderson Memorial Day Shows Skills

The annual Sanderson Memorial Day was run by the Rugby Union Club on Saturday. This is a 4-Ball Ambrose event that brings many rugby players, some of whom are older, out for a bit of fun before the season commences.

This year, 60 players enjoyed the golf. The higher than expected scores seemed to reflect the overall skill level, with very few highlights for individual brilliance.

The winners were the team of Glasson, Matters, Haggarty and Wallder, playing off a handicap of 11 3/8 which produced a net score of 57 5/8. Runners-up were T West, C Moore, J Stewart and J Dobell with a nett score of 58 7/8. The third placed team was D Culley, B Parker, G Collits and K Sanderson (59.6), with 4th being C Alley, N McMillan, A Alley and L Alley on 60 ¼.

The organisers were a little disappointed with the numbers, although they did understand that there were many players away.This Memorial Day is an important event, held to remember those players and families who were affected by the Bali Bombings. As such it is a record in the history of the Rugby Union Club and hopefully will be supported for many years to come.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was well supported with nearly a dozen players participating. The winner was Jill Cripps with 38 points and the runner-up was Paul Pymont on 36 points.

The ball sweep went to Neil McMillan (35 points) on count back.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Drabsch, 18th – M Wood. The ASI Capital-sponsored Summer Sixes Competition Grand Final will be held on 7th April, with play commencing at about 2pm.

Players and guests are invited to come out and watch the teams contesting the grand final and be ready for the presentation that immediately follows play.

Season Finale For Forbes Junior Cricket

The 2018/19 season for the Forbes and District Junior Cricket Association concluded with the staging of the grand finals of the Under 17’s, Under 14’s and Under 12’s competitions.

The results were:

Under 17’s: Parkes Hawkes 9/133 in 25.2 over’s defeated Forbes Acheson’s 8/110 off 26 over’s. Hawkes won by 23 runs.

This game was played in a very competitive but very fair atmosphere by both teams under the supervision of Parkes umpire, Greg Morrissey and Forbes Junior Cricket President, Jeff Nicholson.

Batting first, Hawkes soon realised they had a battle on their hands after Acheson’s bowler, Jed Matheson took two early wickets in his first over. Sensible batting by Hunter Hawke and Mitch Wright restored the situation for Parkes before Hudson Hawke, Zayne Ehsman and Royce Simpson added quick runs towards the end of their innings.

Royce Simpson, in scoring 26 n.o., certainly demonstrated why he received the Most Improved Player Award for the Hawkes team at the presentation ceremony on Sunday. Jed Matheson, Connor Greenhalgh and Toby Hurford all demonstrated that they are talented bowlers by taking two wickets apiece for Acheson’s.

Abi Simpson gained an early breakthrough as she had Toby Matheson caught and bowled before Hudson Hawke had Josh Higgins snapped up by a smart catch taken by Corey Thompson.

Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the Forbes innings until some aggressive batting by Toby Hurford (51 n.o.) and Jack Cole (28) boosted their tally. Toby Hurford deserves full credit for his fine innings.

Parkes Hawkes bowler Harrison McGregor demonstrated very brisk pace and accuracy as he produced two consecutive searing Yorkers to skittle the stumps of Forbes Acheson’s batsmen.

Under 14’s: Parkes Sixers 1/55 off 8 over’s defeated Parkes Thunder 10/53 in 22 over’s. Parkes Sixers won by 9 wickets.

Full credit must go to both teams for making it through to the final after facing strong competition from the two Forbes teams throughout the 2018/19 season.

I would like to start by thanking Deputy Mayor, Jenny Webb for running the ship while I was away on a break. I have heard nothing but great reports on her handling of the business and Council meeting during this time.

This week I will be travelling with Councillor Jenny and our Community Relations Officer, Kimberley Harris to the ALGWA (Australian Local Government Women’s Association) State Conference in Liverpool.

This conference is an amazing opportunity to discuss the challenges women face in local government and how we can exchange ideas, network and collaborate in promoting gender equality in local government.

The Federal Budget was announced this week and I can report it looks like local councils will benefit from the promises. Big investments in natural disaster response, more road funding including $400 million for the Newell Highway and money for transport infrastructure will allow for regional development in our area. We will now have to wait to see if they are voted in at the next election. At a state level, I would also like to congratulate Phil Donato for being voted back in for the electorate of Orange.

Youth Week celebrations begin today with a movie screening at Bedgerabong Public School and continue through next week.

It is so important for us to interact with our youth to ensure they feel connected and celebrate their achievements in the community. Please get behind these Youth Week events.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Forbes for pretty much my whole life. I love the small community and how everyone knows everyone!

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work for Forbes Shire Council as the Youth Officer. It’s very rewarding to be able to offer fun and educational programs/events to the youth of our community.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? To spend time with family and friends.

What makes you proud? My son and my family, especially my twin sister for all she has achieved.

What is your all-time favourite movie? My favourite movie is 8 Seconds!

Tell us about your best holiday. My best holiday was to Darwin with my entire family. It was so beautiful and my first time on a plane.

What is on your bucket list? To travel the world, especially America!

Union Picnic Day Brings Support

Each year the Works team from Forbes Shire Council collects donations during their annual Picnic Day for a worthy charity and this year’s recipient was the Forbes Riding for the Disabled.

“We very much appreciate this support,” said the Riding for the Disabled Treasurer, Debbie Roylance. “These funds will go toward upgrades to the buggy.”

The Riding for the Disabled branch recently purchased a four wheel horse drawn buggy. The goal of the organisers is to raise funds to buy an enclosed trailer to store and transport the buggy, as well as a canopy to go over for sun and rain protection.

This important resource gives children with a disability the chance to ride a horse and experience safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic, horse-related activities.

The Forbes Riding for the Disabled Association is seeking three to four volunteers for an hour a week or fortnight to help assist disabled riders. The children require one on one support whilst on the buggy. They are also looking for qualified trainers and coaches. If interested and you are not qualified the Forbes Riding for the Disabled is willing to assist with these expenses. Contact the secretary, Kylie Ryan at forbes@rdansw.org.au.
