Cowra Get Revenge At Home Against Platypi

May 28, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Platypi suffered a shock defeat to 2021’s big improvers Cowra Eagles in Cowra on the weekend 36-10 in front of a boisterous home crowd.

The loss has left the Platypi just holding onto second spot on 18 points behind high-flyers Orange Emu’s (24 points) but in a gridlock with Cowra (16 points), Bathurst (15 points) and Dubbo on 14 points heading into their top of the table clash at home this Saturday May 29 in round seven of the Blowes Menswear Cup. Even sixth placed Orange City on 11 points are four points and one good game out of finals contention.

Seconds went down 27-16 in a dogged match against the Eagles as well and will be looking to turn their fortunes around this weekend as well after a mixed run of results. The Women’s side had the bye while the Colts drew 17-all with Dubbo in arguably one the best games of the year.

Forbes play Orange Emu’s this weekend and will be looking to reverse the round two loss in Orange when the ladder leaders triumphed 38-26 at home in a quality game. A win for the Platypi and a double on Orange City the following week will hold the side in good stead as they enter a run of crucial games against other finals contenders Bathurst and Dubbo.

Riley Pike Wins Hodges Memorial

May 28, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

SHOT TRACKER: Bruce Chandler tees off with a cracker down the centre in the Saturday Stableford comp in Forbes.

Riley Pike used his early start to score 47 points which was good enough to outlast the 61 players in the field and capture the ‘Wilf Hodges Memorial Trophy’.

The Division 1 was won by Luke Flakelar (41 points) from runner-up Paul Pymont (40 points). The Division 2 results followed the Division 1 trend with high scoring. Riley Pike (47 points) was a clear winner from Andrew Quirk (43 points).

On Sunday a large contingent of Forbes players participated in the West Wyalong Open, contested by 99 players. This was the second in the ‘Trilogy of Golf’, with Condobolin Open (Sunday, 30 May) the last to be played. Forbes players featured highly in the prize winners.

The Open Winner, and winner of the ‘Don Hatch Memorial Trophy’ was Steven Betland with 69 Scratch. This is the third year in succession that a Forbes player has won the event.

This weekend has an 18-Hole Stroke event, sponsored by Country Mile Motor Inn. On Sunday there is a Stableford Medley, and the Condobolin Open, open to both Mens and Ladies.

Netball Proving More Popular

May 21, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes junior mixed netball continues to attract new players to both programs that are running on Saturday mornings.

NetSetGo is for all players aged from 5 years to 9/10 years to learn the skills of netball and have lots of fun doing it. NetSetGo is played at 9:30am each Saturday morning.

Training for any players aged from 9/10 years to 13 years is held each Saturday at 10:30am immediately after NSG. This session is also training for the carnival teams that are playing on Sundays, for those players who are available on Saturdays. Although players playing in the carnivals must be registered with NNSW, anyone can come along on Saturdays and try the programs before they register.

When players register, the registration will carry through to the Netball Forbes Junior Mixed Competition that will be played in the spring on Wednesday nights, inline with the very popular adult competitions.

Wednesdays will be a family affair, when players will join the Junior Mixed competition and play at 5pm and 6pm, and the adults will play in the usual timeslots of 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. Parents have already volunteered to help run the Wednesday junior mixed competition so junior netball can be played in Forbes.

Teams have been entered into the Parkes carnival on Sunday.

The next carnival will be Bathurst on May 23, and entries close today (Friday). Dates for future carnivals after Bathurst are Dubbo May 30, and Orange or West Wyalong on June 6. Parents are asked to please check with team organisers for nomination closing dates.

Playoff Decides Forbes Golf Open

May 21, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

BOOM: George Falvey of Forbes launches one off the tee at Forbes Golf Club.

In cool autumnal weather 164 players competed in the Forbes Men’s Open, with the winner earning an entry into the 2022 NSW Open. This year’s event was sponsored by Forbes Shire, Golfie Hotel and Golf Harvest. At the end of the day four players finished on 2-under, requiring a play-off to decide the winner.

The A-Grade scratch winner, and winner of the Forbes Open, was Thomas Heaton (The Australian GC). Thomas scored a birdie on the second play-off hole, the par-5 2nd hole, to push Joshua Gadd (Penrith) into the Runner-up position.

On the first play-off hole, Will Moody (Avondale) and Joseph Curran (Moore Park) each made bogey to end their tilt at the title.

The B-Grade results saw G Hooper (81 – Forbes) take the Scratch win over S Kirk-man (85 – Forbes). The Handicap winner was G Webb (68 nett) over J Dobell (69 nett), both from Forbes.

The C-Grade results were: Scratch win-ner A Richards (Condobolin) with 86 ahead of N Ryan (Forbes) on 91. The Handicap winner was J Wood (68 nett) ahead of A Quirk) 70 nett, and again both from Forbes.

On Saturday a 4BBB Stableford was played, sponsored by Forbes Livestock & Agency. The field of 116 managed to produce some very good results.

The Scratch winners were Penrith players M Organ and J Gadd with 41 points. Scratch Runners-up were local players J Betland & P Dawson with 40 points. The Handicap winners were D Bayley and A Quirk (both Forbes) with 43 points, on count back from G Webb (Forbes) & L Cotterill (Brisbane) with 43 points.

This weekend has an 18-Hole Stable-ford, with the West Wyalong Mens Open, the second event in the Trilogy of Golf’, on Sunday 23 May.

Dominos Sports Brief

All-Stars Go Down To Stingers

Forbes All Stars have succumbed to the slick Grenfell Stingers 3-1 in an entertaining affair at Forbes Botanical Gardens. In what was Forbes first home game of the season, the All Stars were expected to dictate but their rivals had different ideas, dominating possession and territory aa they launched raid after raid on the Forbes goal. The loss sees Forbes start the 2021 season 0-2 after a loss last week to Parkes.

FPS Serves Up Tennis Clinic

Last Wednesday Laura Chudleigh, Zara Bruem, Jono Webb, Will Watson and Jackson Beaudin headed to the Forbes Tennis Courts to face West Wyalong Public School in the second round of the PSSA Western Tennis Knockout. They faced some tough competition but managed to come out on top, winning with a total of 42 games to 18. All students displayed fantastic sportsmanship on the day and should be proud of their efforts. Depending on the results of the other round two match, they will now move on to play either Parkes East Public School or Tottenham Central School next month. Good luck for round three!

Mixed Results For Platypi

It was a mixed bag on Saturday at Forbes in the May Day fundraiser for Tracey and cancer research. Firsts won against Dubbo Roos 42-7 while the 2nd XV scraped home 7-3. The women went down 54-10 while Colts were outmuscled 15-0. Forbes travel to Cowra next week to begin round two in an important clash for the Platypi if they are to go all the way in 2021.

Polding Selection

Cyms Make Big Statement As Maggies Remain Winless

May 21, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

FAMILIAR SIGHT: Dubbo CYMS players celebrating another try on the weekend as Forbes Magpies went down in all four grades. (Pic courtesy of Dubbo CYMS)

Dubbo CYMS steamrolled Forbes Magpies in a 42-16 rout last weekend to send a warning to rival teams they are not here to make up the numbers in 2021.

The classic rivalry between the two clubs never really materialised as Forbes were always playing catch up despite a lively start against a slick CYMS side lead by familiar names Thurston and Ramien.

A huge second half effort saw Tongia Fox crash over before Mitch Burke also grabbed one. Nick Greenhalgh kicked four goals for Forbes who have one draw and two losses to start season 2021.

In reserves the script read much the same with Dubbo trouncing the Magies 38-4 with doubles to Craig McLean and Mark Merritt. Kristian Markwort nabbed one for Forbes.

In Under 18s it was a much more dour affair with Dubbo again prevailing 24-12 in a cracking game. Forbes will rue the two early tries that gave Dubbo a 12-0 lead at the break after both sides scored 12 points in the second half.

League Tag unfortunately also followed the same thread with our ladies going down in the match of the day 14-6 despite Forbes leading 6-4 at the orange break. Courtney Hodge grabbed the Maggies only try of the game.

This week also saw representatives from NSWRL come to Forbes to discuss the future of the game in the region in what was described as a productive and informative night for stakeholders at the Post Office Hotel. The meeting was called to discuss the future of the group competition and touted merger for 2022.

Aussie Croquet Produces Some Close Games

May 21, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

On May 15 there were a small number of 25 players who participated in Aussie Croquet. Those who recorded close game scores were: Jill Rubie and John MacCullagh 14 def Bob Murray and Dorelle Scott 13, Neville Spry and Merv Langfield 14 def Ray Burridge and Jeff Liebich 13, Elvy Quirk and John Cole 14 def Geoff Coles and Jill Rubie 13, Lorraine Todd and Lyn Simmonds 14 def Dorelle Scott and John Job 13, Barry White and Bob Murray 14 def Harley Stewart and Dorelle Scott 12, Jill Rubie and Barry White 14 def Doreen Rogers and Merv Langfield 12, Elvy Quirk and Robin Pols 14 def John Cole and Cheryl Toohey 12:

Our valued member Ray Burridge cracked the jackpot winning all three games once again which made his the winning tally for eight consecutive weeks.

The framework is now standing for the small shed and it should be completed in the next week or so with a great deal of thanks going to a small number of members responsible for its erection.

Well done and much appreciated to those responsible volunteers who continue to come and assist.

Staines Wipes Hapless Titans With Double

May 21, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

The Penrith Panthers continued their unbeaten run making it ten on the bounce with an emphatic victory 48-12 over the depleted Gold Coast Titans on Sunday night .

Charlie Staines scored a double early in the comprehensive drubbing that also saw Nathan Cleary bag three which could’ve been more.

The Panthers shot to a 30-0 half time lead after Ese’ Ese was sent off for a high shot on Brian To’o, the pocket rocket who continues to set the league alight with his impressive record.

Tries to Moses Leota, Villame Kikau and Kiwi prop James Fisher Harris, who must be a contender for forward of the year saw the Panthers reach an unassailable lead. The Titans tried but the sin binnings, quality of the opposition and some 50/50 calls against them inevitably proved too much.

Penrith’s unbeaten start makes them the seventh team to do so after ten rounds.

Next week in Dubbo, Penrith face Souths in Dubbo in what many believe may be the game of the season. See you there!

Can Anyone Stop Flint Tropics In 2021?

May 14, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

JOSTLING FOR POSITIONS: Like the players from Maybe Babies and KMS, teams are battling for semi final spots with four teams vying for three spots.

The latest round of Forbes Basketball Association Men’s Competition means that after ten rounds, Flint Tropics remain undefeated with an imposing 10-0 record – three wins clear of defending champions Misfits after their 38-31 victory last week in a potential grand final preview.

In the battle for third and fourth leading into the semi finals, Cespitorians held on 37-33 over Zinger Blockers in a dour affair where neither team could get away. The win was vital for Cespitorians, who remain the real dark horse for the title and who now sit at 6-4 only one win behind Misfits but more importantly, two wins clear of Zinger Blockers (4-6) and three clear of KMS (3-7) who are battling for fourth. KMS won 49-32 over the much improved Maybe Babies.

With the semi finals in sight, the ladder is starting to take shape and the real question everyone is asking is – can anyone stop Flint Tropics and steal their thunder? Will 2021 be the year they breakthrough? Watch this space…

Staines Leaves Marks On Sharks With Three

May 14, 2021 by Maggi Barnard

It is nearly becoming a weekly occurrence for Forbes Magpies junior and Penrith Panthers flyer Charlie Staines, though this week he scored three tries in a 48-0 strong showing against the Cronulla Sharks last weekend.

Buoyed by the Panthers scintillating start to the season that has seen them go 9-0 in the NRL, undefeated in NSW Cup and only one defeat in Jersey Flegg, Staines continues to shine in a star-studded side that has also won 26 of its last 27 and plays a Titans team this Sunday that may be without star player David Fifita.

It was Staines seventh try against the Sharks in only two games leaving the former NRL powerhouse languishing near the bottom of the ladder. Sharks fans must be sick of the sight of Staines, a phrase previously unheard of after former Queensland Origin prop Dan played with the club during the 80s and 90s.

Yet bigger tests lay on the horizon for the young Panthers with Origin meaning up to six players may be out which will certainly test the team’s depth. Games against Souths this month and the Roosters and Eels back-to-back in late June early July also loom as a real litmus test for the club before Melbourne again in August in what may well be the precursor to this year’s decider.

A rematch between last years combatants looks certain at this point and nothing short of a win on their 30th anniversary since their first title will be enough for the Panthers.

As for Staines, its Magic Round next Sunday against the Gold Coast Titans in Brisbane and a shot at the perfect 10!
