Heat Challenges Croquet Players

February 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The biggest challenge last Tuesday for croquet players was the heat with some players not able to play all games.

The consistent players across the three games of golf croquet were John H Brown, Bruce Field, Bill Scott and Ken Styles with a score of three out of three. They were followed by Kathleen Broderick, Colleen Leibich, Joan Littlejohn, Neville Morrison and Carol Slattery, with two wins each across the three games. Congratulations to all – it’s a pleasure to see some strategic thinking happening on all courts.

Despite the cooler weather last Saturday, fewer members than usual came along. There were some in depth discussions between partners as to how to approach the hoop and knock the opposition out, with some hilarious results and laughter.

Alex Todd, with the assistance of his partners, was the only player to win all three games. Several players won two of their matches: John and Cherylin Cole, Lorna Field, Joan Littlejohn, Kevin Rubie, Libby Smart, Lorraine Todd and Barry White. Well done teams. Happy birthday to Jill Rubie.

February 2, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes will turn into a sporting hub on the weekend of 1st and 2nd April when a major event organiser takes on the Forbes Triathlon Festival.

The Forbes Running and Tri Club has called on NSW’s leading multisport organiser Elite Energy Events to put together a weekend of triathlon action.

It is expected that the weekend will not only bring large numbers of athletes, but also boost the local economy with more than $500,000,” said Sebastian Gallery of Elite Energy.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring a weekend full of events to the area and forming a strong relationship with the Forbes Shire Council and the local people. We look forward to welcoming hundreds of athletes from across NSW,” said Elite Energy’s CEO Mark Emerton.

The triathlon festival, held over two days, kicks off on the Saturday morning with the Sprint Triathlon(750m swim, 20km bike and 10km run), Enticer Triathlon(100m swim, 4km bike and 1km run) and Miniman for Kids Triathlon(100m swim, 2km ride, and 1km run). Later in the day there will be fun runs and the Island to Island swim at the Forbes Ski Dam.

Sunday will be another day of action with the Standard distance(1.5km swim/40km bike/10km run) and the main event the Ul- timate Triathlon (1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run). The Ultimate Triathlon is the newest entrant into half iron distance triathlon racing. Forbes is the sixth leg of the Ultimate Triathlon series of seven locations across Australia.

The event hub for the Forbes Triathlon Festival will be located at the Ski Dam. Registrations for the Forbes Festival are open at www.eliteenergy.com.au

January 26, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Last year 9-year-old Tom Drane became the youngest ever winner of the Forbes Sports Person of the Year Award.

Who will it be this year? You still have time to recognise and acknowledge the achieve- ments and contributions of the town’s local sporting heroes.

There is not much time left to enter nominations for all the categories including, Junior, Senior, All Round Sportsperson, Team, Administrator, Coach/Trainer, Referee/Um- pire and overall Sportsperson of the Year. The closing date is Tuesday, 31st January.

All sporting clubs are encouraged to nominate someone for every category to recog- nise and show appreciation to your clubs’ achievers for 2016.

Nomination forms are available on the Facebook page of the Forbes Sports Person of the Year Association.

All nominations are judged by an independent judging panel. The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Presentation Dinner on Saturday, 4th March at the Forbes Services Memorial Club commencing at 6.30pm.

Bayley And Dawson Dominate

January 26, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Dan Bayley and Peter Dawson won the postponed Deacon Dwyer Day last Saturday, contested by 37 pairings.

The jointly sponsored event by Forbes Catering & Packaging Supplies, and Shead & Nicholson was played as a 4BBB Medley.

The winning pair won with a score of 48 points: their scratch card was 8-under, with five birdies in a row on the back. Runners- up were Ken Sanderson and Garry Collits. They had consistency and teamwork to use their handicaps well, compiling 46 points.

The ball sweep went to 43 points on countback, including those above plus: 46 – P Pymont/P Kay; 45 – B Shine/J Fletcher, P Nixon/A McDonald, B Squires/F Dono- hue; 44 – Tony Cogswell/T Morgan; 43 – P Duke/L O’Connor, T Howe/G Betland, T Callaghan/M Collits.

The NTP’s went to: 1st – G Betland, 18th – B Parker, neither of whom got their 2’s.

Continuing the flavour of aiming for the hole, Dan Bayley helped their winning score along with a chip-in, and a putt-in. Also in that pool was Andrew House, whose chip- in on the 9th for 5 points really helped the team score.

On Sunday, the Stableford Medley field was a healthy 25 players, with many wanting to avail themselves of the good conditions.

The final result saw Andrew Dukes take the win with 41 points, on count back from John Zannes. Both were well ahead of the rest of the field.

The ball sweep went to 32 points, distrib- utedto:41–ADukes,JZannes;35–P Maher; 34 – J Haley, L Grierson; 33 – R Besgrove, S Bell; 32 – R Rhodes, M Haley.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Dixon (Pks); 18th – M Haley. There were quite a few visitors, with S Bell, R Bell, R Bell and W Bell from Peak Hill, P Dixon (Parkes), and W Dawson (Goulburn). The trip home to Peak Hill would have been noisome (look that up).

A reminder that the trial of the Play the Lie rule continues throughout the month of February. This will apply to Men’s Competitions, and for the Sunday Stableford Medley. The Sixes competition will retain its Preferred Lie through the Green rule, while the Ladies and Vets will make their own ruling.

The Pennants 2017 season starts on 5th February with the first round being played at Duntryleague.

The second running of the Cahill Footwear sponsored Australian 2-club 2-person Ambrose, one of the most highly prestigious events on the national calendar, will be played tomorrow. Get your name on the sheet.

Miraculous Scores In Men’s Golf Stroke Event

January 19, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Men’s Golf Stroke event last Saturday saw 56 players making miraculous scores with Scott Kirkman winning the A-Division with 66 net. Runner-up was Dave Mylecharane on 68. The B-Division saw Alby Callaghan, one of Forbes golfing’s true gentlemen, take the win with 66 nett. Close behind, was Geoff Drane on 67 nett.

The ball sweep went to 71 nett on count back. The visitors included Ray Beacroft (The Grange), making a welcome return, and Marty Woods (Orange). The NTP’s went to: 1st – A Dukes, 18th – A Davies. Alf managed three 2’s in total. The golfing gods helped Andrew House,
who chipped in twice and later holed a monster putt on the 16th,to get a good score. There was also a magician golfer playing the 7th hole. He had three tee shots but finished the hole with a birdie 4, because his first two tee shots struck the wires, so he got to replay them.

The Sunday Stableford Medley field was small due to the hot weather. Ray Taylor won the day with 35 points. There was no ball sweep, but the NTP’s were snaffled easily. The 9th went to B Carpenter (for the 2nd week running), while the 18th went to R Taylor. The condition of the course has improved over recent months and held its own through the summer. We will be trialling a “Play the Lie” rule for the month of February, to be applied to all men’s competitions, and likely for the Sunday Stableford Medley. The Sixes competition will retain its ‘Preferred Lie through the Green’ rule, while the ladies and vets will make their own ruling.

The Playoff for the AAA Cup was completed on Sunday. This is a points competition held throughout the year with points awarded to place-getters for each of the main competition games. Andrew Dukes finished in top spot showing the value of consistently high performances with a sprinkling of wins. The top- 12 points scorers competed in an 18-hole playoff. Phil Maher was 3rd on count back from
Lee Grierson, Peter Dawson finished in 2nd spot (bridesmaid for the second year), and Andrew Dukes took top honours. The prize for the Best Overall Points Average went to Steven Betland (110.38) ahead of Andrew Dukes (103.31). And the prize for the Most Games Played went to Scott Kirkman (33) ahead of Bruce Squires (31).

Ham Day Entices Golfers

December 22, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

wallace-cup-lee-grierson-vs-marty-cahill

Saturday’s play was an Individual Stableford sponsored by Kenny’s Baa-Moo-Oink. The field of 57 players were keen to snare themselves a ham. The A-division was dominated by Todd Callaghan who managed two very fine 9’s of 37 each amassing 40 points. Peter Grayson could only lament the missed opportunities in his round of 38, with two wipes. The B-division saw Brett Slack-Smith, who played early and posted 41 points, finish ahead of Stuart French with 40 points. The ball sweep went to 35 on countback, including those above plus: 38 – Bruce
Squires, Peter Barnes; 37 – Steve Grallelis, Barry Parker; 36 – Paul Kay, Niel Duncan, Michael Wood Jnr; 35 – Rob Webb, Peter Dawson, Jeff Haley, Peter Cowhan. NTP’s: 1st – Scott Kirkman, 18th – Garry Johnson. Scott got his Sunday’s play was the Stableford Medley with a small field but strong contest, this was won by Phil Duke with 38 points, closely followed by Dave Rhodes on 37. There was no ball sweep, and only one NTP. That was on the 18th taken out by Laurie O’Connor.

The semi-finals of the Wallace Cup were played and contested by Dan Bayley vs Ian Bown, and Lee Grierson vs Marty Cahill. Dan was victorious over Ian, while Marty was fortunate to score a win before Lee could gain an advantage on the longer final holes. On Saturday the annual presentations were made to Men’s and Mixed competition winners from the year’s events. Undoubtedly the highlights for the Ladies were the accolades to Julie Hurkett and Briana Duncan for their success. For the Men Doug Churchill stood out as a prolific receiver of many awards.

Tomorrow is a Stableford Medley, and again on Boxing Day, while on Saturday, 31st December will be the Canadian Foursomes. The New Year starts with a Stableford Medley on 1st January. I wish you all a Happy Christmas and enjoyable New Year, and look forward to seeing
you on the course in 2017.
