Great Victory For Forbes Pennants

March 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes no 4 golfing pennants team captured the Central West District Association finals flag with a 3-2 win over Cowra last Sunday.

Played at Orange’s Ex-Services Club, the Forbes players did not let a late night at the President’s Lunch deter their winning efforts. In fact some seemed to play better according to team officials.

Best for Forbes was Troy Howe with a 7-6 victory after winning the first six holes.

The team number 1, Richard Smith won 3-2, number 2 Stuart French sealed victory winning two up and number 3 Garry Py- mont lost on the 19th hole, while Gus Coles was behind all day going down 4-3.

Saturday’s 4-ball par event in Forbes was won by Barry Parker and Denis Culley with plus 8 from Lyndon Byrne and Frank Hanns on plus 7 on a count-back from Paul Kay and Paul Pymont along with Ronald Morris and Scott Kirkman.

Sunday’s medley was won by Jill Cripps with 36 points from Martin Woods, 35. Tomorrow is the Bali Memorial (formally Greg Sanderson Memorial) played as a 4-person medley ambrose. Members will gather to remember the late Brian Monaghan with drinks and chat from 4.30-7pm. Members of Brian’s family will be in attendance.

It is also rumoured Fred Collie, or is that Brian, let his partner down on Saturday fading late in his round due to condition. It is believed this has been caused by the shortage of chocolate in the family’s Wambat Street home…

Having A Laugh With Vince For A Good Cause

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Stand-up comedian Vince Sorrenti will be entertaining more than 800 guests at the sell out Forbes Rugby Union Club President’s Lunch tomorrow. In its sixth year, the lunch has become a social tradition to not only raise funds for the club but also for local charities and organisations. “We also love to get people together to celebrate our club’s achievements, especially this year as we go into our 50th season,” said Tracey Prior, Club President.

The unique purpose and simple concept of the lunch has proved to be hugely successful with long waiting lists every year of people wanting to attend. “It has just grown so much with 820 people attending this year,” said Chris Sweeney, chairman of the President’s Lunch. The proceeds of this year’s lunch will go to the Forbes Badminton Club, Forbes Toy Library, Forbes Running and Triathlon Club and Ava Garland & Family.

Additional funds will be raised with the gourmet dinner auction courtesy of Eat Your Greens (for ten people plus a champagne, wine and beer hamper) and in support of Batyr. It is a purposeful organisation that aims to engage, educate and empower young people to have positive conversations about mental health. Chris said by supporting Batyr, the club would like to bring the organisation to Forbes to run its programs for young people in the town. There will also be $1,000 prize money for a winning table in the Platypus charity draw. The tables are run by a table captain who sells nine tickets to friends. “This concept is very simple and easy to run, and it also makes the event very social and community orientated,” said Chris. “That is what rugby is all about: community, friendship and mateship.”

If you would like to be a captain at next year’s lunch, contact the committee on rugbylunchforbes@gmail.com.

Western Region Rogues Amaze Rest Of State

March 16, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The formidable Western Region Rogues dragon boat team took to the waters of Penrith International Regatta Centre recently and came home with silver and bronze. With true determination and grit and paddles thrashing in beautiful synchronisation, the team won silver in the women’s and bronze in the open sections. Both feats are amazing, as only four men were included in the Western side, where other teams had up to 12 men in their sides.

For the paddlers it was as if something magic happened on the water in front of a crowd of thousands, as they raced the 500m course six times. The team had six Lachlan Dragons: Carmen Stephens and Claire Davis of Forbes and Warren Edwards, Helen Rowbotham, Rochelle Smith and Beth Thomas of Parkes. The team, coached by Deb Clarke of Bathurst, was congratulated many times over on their spirit, enthusiasm and absolute determination. “I think we are all legends,” said Deb proudly. “We have certainly lifted the profile of Western Region in the state dragonboat community.’

Childhood Dream Comes True For Darcie

March 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Darcie Morrison’s blazing performance on the Rugby Sevens world stage the past year won her the Forbes Advocate 2016 Sportsperson of the Year last Saturday.

Darcie, who could not attend the ceremony, was honoured to be nominated and selected by her peers and the community. Ever since attending the Sportsperson of the Year Awards at the age of about 10 she has always wanted to win this award. “I encourage all sports people to give back to the community sporting organisations that have made all this possible,” she said.

The fact that she only started playing rugby sevens in 2015 makes her sporting achievement so much more impressive. It did not take very long for her to be noticed and she was selected to play for Australia at the World University Championships in Wales last year where she scored five tries and was awarded players player.

Darcie went on to captain the CSU Rugby Sevens team at the Australian University Games in Perth. The team went through the competition undefeated and won the gold medal. Darcie scored all but two of the tries. She was again named players player.

She was also invited to play with one of two Australian teams at the Central Coast Sevens in October last year and she played for NSW in the 2016 National Championships where they finished as runners-up to Queensland. The list continues with Darcie named 2016 Blue Belle – NSW Rugby Sevens player of the year, she was invited to play in the Australian Development team at the Darwin Sevens in January, she played an invitational game with the Australian de- velopment team against Ireland in Sydney in January and was invited to tour with the Australian development team to Japan in February.

Concussion

March 9, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

With pre-season training for winter sports commencing, it is a relevant time to discuss sports related head injuries and consider what can be done to prevent or minimize the impact a concussion injury has on an athlete. In the medical world, a concussion is considered a mild traumatic brain injury.

Concussions occur not only from direct contact of the head with a solid object but also when indirect forces cause the brain to move rapidly within the skull such as a fall on the buttocks or a whiplash injury. Contrary to popular belief, you can sustain a concussion without losing consciousness.

Common symptoms of concussion include headaches, memory and concentration dif- ficulty, decreased balance and coordination, drowsiness, vomiting and light or sound sensitivity. The ability to perform normal activities with the same speed, reaction time and precision as prior to the injury is often significantly altered. When managed appropriately most signs and symptoms are temporary and resolve within seven to 10 days, however complications can occur including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about the po- tential long-term consequences of multiple concussions.

The brain needs time to heal and rest after a concussion. This includes rest from both physical activity and cognitive loads. Returning to sport too early increases the chances of another concussion.

It is worth considering performing baseline testing such as a SCAT-3 or King Devick Test in the pre-season to establish a bench- mark offering comparison when an athlete has sustained a concussion. This helps determine when they are ready to return to sport.

A big thank you goes to the Forbes Council staff for the extra work to greening the lawns and to Tony Thompson for helping out. The heat has taken its toll on the lawns.

The last few weeks croquet games have been well attended as the mornings are becoming cooler. Our outstanding players with full scores of three games in golf croquet on Tuesday, 28th February were Jeff Liebich, Mary Hodges and Bruce Field. In Aussie croquet on Saturday, 4th March, full scores of three games were played by John Cole, John MacCullagh, Kevin Rubie and Bill Scott.
