Cowboy Logic At Sahara Park

November 17, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

img_0435

A dozen cutting horse enthusiasts joined world-renowned horseman Tony Ernst for a weekend workshop at the Sahara Park Riding School last weekend. The riders and their horses came from across the state to refine their skills under Tony’s expert instruction. Tony is one the most sought after and highly respected horsemen in the world. He has developed a unique approach to horsemanship, based on respect, attitude, and breathing. “Horse whisperers are for Hollywood,” he said. “You’ve got to be a horse listener.”

Tony stressed that his approach isn’t just about helping horses, it’s about helping people. And he has helped a lot of people. Aside from cutting horse enthusiasts, Tony has delivered workshops for troubled students, and has also run corporate clinics to help executives enhance their leadership skills. It all comes down to earning respect. “You have to prove you’re someone worth following,” he said. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Tony believes that a lot of wisdom is found in adversity. Listening to his story, it becomes clear where his wisdom was forged. In his youth Tony was involved in an horrific accident and was confined to a wheelchair for three years until he taught himself to walk again. He credits his recovery to a positive attitude, his practice of Kung Fu,
and the power of breathing exercises. This formed the foundations for Tony’s unique horsemanship program, which he has branded Cowboy Logic. “The only thing you’ve really got control of in this world is your attitude,” he said.

Golf Notes

November 10, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

This weekend will see one of the best field of golfers ever to contest a tournament in Forbes with 13 players on handicaps of three or less nominated for the $5,500 Nissan Classic. Players this year are from as far afield as the Gold Coast to all points across NSW. Tee off on both days for first players start at 7am with the last at 1.30pm. Spectators are welcome.

Chairperson of the Classic committee, Randal Grayson said support from sponsors was again excellent. Saturday evening a calcutta will be conduced with the cream of A grade players involved. “Come over and you never know you may end up with the winner. Last year’s winner collected close to $2,000,” Randal said. Last weekend’s results: A grade winner Phil Duke with 73 nett on a count-back from Todd Callaghan (runner-up), Peter Grayson and Ray Taylor.

Paul Kay scored best for the day, 72 in B grade and on a count-back from Jeff House. Tom Edols led C graders home with 73 nett from Ron Morris, 75.

Special Students Chase Cricket Dream

November 10, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The first Thursday in November was a special day for around 50 special class students from Parkes and Forbes public schools when they participated in DreamCricket at Parkes Pubic School. DreamCricket brings together children with a disability from years three to six. It was originally developed in the NSW Central Highlands as the result of a partnership between Rotary, the Bradman Foundation and the Movement Disorder Foundation.

The day was made super special when 18 Year 7 students from Parkes High joined in with their teacher Mark Ranger to help organise the games and cook lunch. About half the high school students completed Year 6 at Parkes Public School in 2015. The DreamCricket program allows the students to develop their hand-eye coordination, movement skills and balance in a team environment, while at the same time enjoying sport.

Students enjoyed the sporting challenges, which involved groups rotating around four specially adapted cricket-based activities. The participation and smiles on faces said it all. DreamCricket gives students that normally would not participate in sport a chance to be involved. It gives participants a chance to enjoy physical activity while developing self-confidence, self-esteem, levels of behaviour and citizenship.

The DreamCricket program has grown to schools and children throughout Australia and internationally. The day was organised as a joint effort by the Rotary Clubs of Dubbo East, Forbes, Parkes and Orange Daybreak. It was coordinated by Don Stephens, Chair of Dream- Cricket Australia and member of the Rotary Club of Dubbo West.

ahead of the Lachlan Valley Districts 613. John Betland was our best scratch score with 145, finishing in 15th spot. Steve Betland finished further down the list at 56th, and Peter Dawson, Andrew Dukes, Lee Grierson, Mark Collits and Dan Bayley finished further back.

November 3, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

012

Carmen Stephens is the new head coach of the Forbes Dragon Boat Club. She is supported by sub-coach, Chris Sweeney. Carmen, the drummer for the Lachlan Dragons, has accepted the role with enthusiasm and in less than a fortnight has successfully pulled the team together and trained them to a level fit for competing at next Sunday’s Orange regatta. Chris Sweeney already demonstrated his worth in the coaching arena, as sub-coach under Michael
Ryan.

Super Fast Mitch Wins Rookie Of The Year

November 3, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes local Mitch Roylance is making a name for himself in the sport of V8 Superboat racing. He won Rookie of the Year at the Australian V8 Superboat Championship in Temora last weekend against about 30 competitors from all over Australia. He also came third overall in the season series of seven races.

He competed in six of the seven races this year in his superboat called Blackjack. Mitch made sure to keep the Rookie of the Year award in the family as his older brother Justin won it in 2013. Justin also competed last weekend at Lake Centenary, a purpose built track. The two brothers competed against each other and took out second and third positions in one of the races.

“It was Mitch’s first year of competing and he has done fantastically,” said Justin. He has been a navigator for a driver previously. Mitch’s navigator at Temora was Matt Hearn. The sport of superboating is likened to a rally on water. A crew of two, a driver and a navigator, race individually against the clock through a twisting series of channels in less than a metre of water. The navigator uses hand signals to indicate to the driver where to go.

The race course normally has 25 to 30 changes of direction and generally takes just 45–60 seconds. Justin said a superboat accelerated from 1 to 100km in 1.8 seconds and reached a top speed of 120km/h. “When we turn
we have up to six G-force and therefore need to be strapped in with a five-point race harness.

The sport originated in New Zealand and came to Australia about 20 years ago.

Dawson Blasts To Medal Win

October 27, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

The Men’s Monthly Medal played last Saturday was a true test of controlled ball flight in blustery wind conditions.
Peter Dawson won the A-grade on count back with nett 73. Runner-up was Stephen Uphill with 73 nett. The B-grade went to Ian Bown who returned a nett 72, and carried his partner to a keno win. Runner-up was Michael Browne with 73 nett.

The C-grade winner was Frank Hanns who had 70 nett – the best round of the day. Stuart French had nett 73 to finish runnerup. The ball sweep went to 77 nett on count back given to those above plus: 74 – D Bayley, D Earl; 75 – P Maher, S Kirkman; 76 – F Donohue, C McMillan, B Chandler; 77 – T Sharpe, M Woods (Orange) and A Borger.
The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Betland; 18th – M Woods.

The winner of Sunday’s Stableford Medley was Andy Dukes scoring 33 points. Unfortunately there was not enough of a field for any other balls. However, there were NTP’s – 9th A Dukes; 18th B Carpenter.

The Nissan Classic weekend, with a 4BBB will be on 12th November and an 18- hole stroke on the 13th. This event is so popular we need more carts. If you are not using your cart, or willing to share a seat, please let Daniel know.
The Forbz Skinz begins today, and on Sunday it is the Condobolin Open. We wish our Lachlan Valley Districts team
well at the Country Championships at Goulburn this weekend.

The Club Championships has been moved to 19th and 20th and 26th and 27th November.

Dragons Up And Paddling

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

017

Lachlan Dragons President, Robyn Stephens, recently attended the Dragon Boating Federation’s AGM in Sydney with Neil Stephens where a number of constitutional items needed to be ratified. Robyn is working well to keep the Dragons united in team spirit after so many missed sessions due to floodwaters. Debra Tooley and Deb Churchill have taken on the demanding role of regatta coordinators.

Bev Pengilly recently travelled to Orange to complete a full day Official’s Course, enabling her to officiate at regattas.
Our club is sadly missing Michael Ryan, but our drummer, Carmen Stephens, has been doing a fabulous job keeping us on track with her interim coaching. Both Carmen and Warren Edwards will attend a twoday coaching course in Orange. Sweep, Bill Thomas, takes the new dragon boat on its maiden voyage of Lake Forbes.

Two of our finest dedicated paddlers are soon off to Windsor to take up the challenge of the 65 km Wiseman’s Dash. Claire Davis and Helen Rowbotham are taking part in this inaugural classic, which is aiming to raise $400,000 for charity. If you’d like to support them with their fundraising go to https://give.everydayhero.com/au/kombodragon-
boat-team . All money must be in by this weekend.

One of our new boats has finally hit the water now that the floods have receded. If you’d like to be part of this great sport, you are most welcome to come and have a go. Find us on Facebook, or just come and meet us on Lake Forbes behind the Sport & Recreation Club at 8:15am Sundays or 5:45pm Thursdays.

Golf Course Open Again

October 20, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

ian-bown-teeing-off

Last Saturday’s Individual Stableford attracted a field of 45 players who welcomed the opportunity to play on the surprisingly good greens and fairways after the floods. The winner was Andrew McDonald who produced a near flawless display to produce 42 points for the day. Runner-up was Matt Lawryk from Parkes with 39.

The ball sweep went to 34 points on count back, being distributed to those above plus: 38 – P Maher; 37 – P Duke, I Bown, R Morris; 36 – G Drane, A Grierson, C Barrett; 34 – S Sallaway, N Duncan. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – B Shine, 18th second – R Nixon. There were no 2’s scored.

There was one bona fide eagle scored on the 11th by Phil Maher. Phil’s drive drifted into the trees on the right, finishing near a trunk. Using his 2-iron, Phil punched a shot, which scorched out of the foliage, ran along the fairway, rose up the green, and dropped into the hole.

Once again the regular Sunday Stableford Medley crowd were out. The blustery conditions made it difficult to score well, but some players managed the wind well. The winner was Judy Hodge, with 36 points. The NTP’s went to: 18th first – J Hodge, 18th second – nobody. The FGA AGM will be held on Wednesday, 26th October at 6:30 pm. The first ‘Forbz Skinz’ competition starts on 28th October.

The Forbes Golf Classic is set for the weekend of 12th and 13th November.

Darcie Leads CSU Sevens to Gold

October 13, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

australian-uni-games-3

Forbes local Darcie Morrison is making a name for herself in the world of women’s rugby sevens. As captain of the Charles Sturt University (CSU) team she led by example at the 2016 Australian University Games in Perth. Her team won back-to-back titles in the competition without conceding a single game. Four teams competed for the title with
two full rounds played before the finals commenced. Darcie scored three tries per game on the first day and continued to clock points with a similar performance on the second day. CSU came up against Griffith University in the semi-finals and then took on James Cook University in the final match to claim the gold medal. Darcie was
unstoppable racking up five of the team’s six tries for the match and converted her last try on the bell.

Prior to the trip to Perth, Darcie was invited to attend the Australian Women’s Sevens camp in Narrabeen and was asked to play in one of two Australian Development teams to compete in the Central Coast Sevens Tournament in October with the hope of securing a contract.

The Rugby Sevens season is in full swing and Darcie will be playing in Noosa with the NSW Development team and also Byron Bay with the Sydney University team in the next two weeks before giving it her best shot to secure a spot in the Australian squad.
