Holy Fundraisers, Batman, It’s On Again!

July 20, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The dynamic duo will take no prisoners at Platypi Park this weekend as Forbes Rugby Club superheroes do battle with the competition in the annual Charity Day. The Mudgee Wombats will face the First Grade Platpyi who, donning Batman jerseys, are expected to “Smash”, “Bam!”, and “Pow!” their way through a hard-fought game.

Meanwhile, in red and black, the Wolfpack will channel Robin’s enthusiasm to “Crunch!”, “Kapow”, and “Thunk” their opponents in a feisty display. After the games, the caped crusaders will offer up their jerseys for auction to the highest bidders. The Charity Day is one way the Club and players give back to their supporters and sponsors. It aims to raise funds for the local community and causes that are close to the club’s heart.

Club Manager, Phil Prior, said that some of the funds this year will support The Long Walk for Lungs. Organised by AGnVET Services in conjunction with the Lung Foundation Australia, the walk will be supported by many participants who will be walking part of the journey with Bill Van Nierop. Bill was diagnosed in 2015 with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a rare progressive lung disease associated with scarring of the lung tissue that makes it difficult to breath. The five-year survival rate is as low as some of the more devastating cancers –
approximately 20%.

Bill set up The Long Walk for Lungs to raise awareness of IPF in rural Australia and raise funds to support research into IPF and lung disease more broadly, as 7 out of 10 research programs in this area will receive virtually no funding.

The walk will begin in Narromine on 14 August, and follow a 697km route through Central Western NSW passing through the towns of Trundle, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Griffith, Leeton, West Wyalong, finishing in Forbes. Walkers AGnVET in Forbes have had a long association with the Rugby Club, and are grateful for its support in helping their colleague, Bill.

So, if you have time on Saturday, come along and support the teams and their fantastic efforts to support The Long Walk for Lungs and other local charities. The Colts will kick off at 12.45pm.

Croquet Notes

July 20, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

This week we are sending best wishes for a complete recovery to one of our major stalwarts in Alec Todd. We hate to see any of our members not well enough to join us at Croquet, so hurry and get those tests done and get back to us Alec. We all miss you and Lorraine. Thanks to John and other members for stepping up to help Libby set up. Another one out of action is our Secretary Anne. Hope you are mended soon Anne.

Shane Sallaway Scores An Ace

July 13, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday, Shane Sallaway eclipsed all the Monthly Medal contenders with his Hole-in-One on the 18th hole. The shot was straight and true, rolling in for only his second ‘ace’ ever.

The field for the Monthly Medal 18-Hole Stroke sponsored by Walkers AGnVET, saw 69 players compete against the tight fairways and well-placed pins.

Richard Nixon won the A-grade with a nett 72, which included only one birdie. Runner-up was Barry Shine with 73 nett and on count back from two others.

The B-grade went to Malcolm Langfield with a cool nett 72. Behind him Adam Borg- er got the nod on count back with Nett 74.

In the C-grade the winner was Denis Culley with a 73 nett. Don Ridley was the best of the rest with his nett 75 to finish runner-up.

The ball sweep went to 77 nett on count back, going to: 72 – M Langfield, R Nix- on; 73 – B Shine, P Dawson, D Culley, D McAuliffe; 74 – P Cowhan, S Sallaway, A Borger, M Spice; 75 – P Grayson, P Py- mont, D Ridley, G Coles; 76 – R Sander- son, B Carpenter, R Smith, P Kay, J Ridley, D Churchill; 77 – S Hayes.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Tilden; 18th – S Sallaway. Peter got his “2”. There were six 2s overall, with the 3rd being the easiest target.

Sunday’s Stableford Medley had a good following once again. Bruce Carpenter won the day with 37 points, slipping away from Ray Taylor with 35 points. The ball sweep went to 33, being awarded to Jill Cripps. The NTP’s went to: 9th- J Cripps; 18th – E Coombes.

Membership fees are due and must be paid for players to be eligible to win any of the closely scheduled Championship events.

In addition to existing membership categories, there are two new options. The new limited membership allows a player to compete in 15 Competition events through the year; and new social membership al- lows a player to pay members rates for Social, Summer 6s and Winter 3s golf. More details are available at the Pro Shop or from a Management Committee member.

Sat July 15 and Sun July 16 is the Men’s Foursome Championships, sponsored by S & S Welsh Transport. There will be a Stableford Medley on Sunday 16, with tee time preference to be given to the Four- somes Championships.

Forbes Ladies Win Cannon Merritt Trophy

July 13, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

As defending champions two years ago, the Forbes Ladies Bowls Club hosted this year’s Cannon Merritt Trophy in Forbes last week.

The 2016 event had to be cancelled because of the devastating floods that struck our region last September.

Three teams of triples played 21 ends against three teams from Parkes. Our bowlers did extremely well, winning two rinks and only losing one point on the third.

In the end, it was a well-deserved win to Forbes on 64, beating Parkes on 40 points. Well played everyone.

Forbes Croquet

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The cold weather hasn’t deterred local Cro- quet members. The Club still has plenty of players arriving each day for some good scoring games. Most of the strong scores are coming from newer members, so a big pat on the back for everyone.

Congratulations to Joan Littlejohn and Veva MacCullagh, who scored hat tricks at Golf Croquet last Tuesday. Congratulations also to John Cole, Dorothea Croker, Col- leen Liebich, Evelyn Mahlo, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Harley Stewart, Ken Styles, and John Allegri, with two wins each.

Aussie Saturday 1st July

Depite the sub-zero night temperatures, Saturday turned on the sunshine for some great croquet. It was lovely to see mem- bers Elvy and John back from their holiday. John turned up inspite of battling the flu, which proves that you can’t keep a good croquet player down.

Members with three winning games were Dorothea Croker, Alec Todd and Lyn Sim- monds. John Allegri, Cherylin Cole, Veva MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Libby Smart, Harley Stewart and Barry White each came up with two wins.

Golfers Enjoy The Winter Sun

July 6, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

On Saturday, 35 players enjoyed the winter sun as they played in the Men’s 18-hole Stroke event, sponsored by Forbes TV and Video Repairs.

The A-Division winner was Shane Sall- away with 72 nett. Runner-up was David Earl with 73 nett, scraping past Steve Up- hill and Ted Morgan on count back.

The B-Division winner was Milton Cart- wright, with 76 nett and a winner on count back. Runner-up was Don Ridley, also on 76 nett, as well as on count back, from Bruce Chandler and Brett Slack-Smith.

The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back, going to: 72 – S Sallaway; 73 – D Earl, S Uphill, T Morgan; 74 – J Betland, J Haley, P Pymont; 75 – B Everest. The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Callaghan; 18th – J Betland.

On Sunday, many players enjoyed the Stableford Medley and, despite the brace of “newcomers”, none could get past the Sunday stalwarts.

Once again Bruce Carpenter showed his “Steady Sunday” form, producing 37 points to take the win. Runner-up was Ash Tucker on 36 points, and getting there by count back from Digit McAuliffe.

The ball sweep went to 33 points, go- ing to: D McAuliffe, B Shields, A Dukes, R Taylor and R Besgrove. The NTP’s were: 9th – G Nicholson; 18th – A Dukes.

The Wallace Cup draw is up and look- ing bare. With only two weeks to complete your 1st Round matches we need to get things rolling.

Strong Competition In 4BBB Championship

June 29, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Last weekend was a big one for local golfers, with the 4BBB Stroke Championship sponsored by John Davis Mazda held on Saturday, followed by the Stableford Medley on Sunday.

In Saturday’s 18-hole 4BBB event, the Scratch winners were Steve Betland and Tim West, who combined well to record a 68 scratch score, in a field of 56 competi- tors. Todd Callaghan and Peter Dawson were Runners-up, beaten on count back. They level-pegged with the winners during the initial stages of the back-9, but stum- bled home.

The Handicap Champions were Paul Kay and Paul Pymont, who finished with a nett 62. Runners-up were Linden Byrne and Barry Parker with 63 nett, getting there by count back from Ron Morris and Scott Kirkman.

The Stableford Medley on Sunday was well enjoyed by many players in spite of the lack of sunshine. Ray Taylor was unstoppable with his 39 points, finishing ahead of Mick Wood on 37 points.

The ball sweep went to 36 points, going to Rod Smith (from Tully) and Barb Drabsch. The NTP’s were: 9th – M Wood; 18th – B Shields. The only 2’s were scored by Mick Wood and Rod Smith.

This weekend will also be busy, with an 18-hole Stroke event on Saturday, sponsored by Forbes TV & Video Repairs. Sunday includes the local Stableford Medley, and Opens being played at Grenfell and Tottenham.

The Monthly Medal, sponsored by Walkers AgnVet, will be held the following Satur- day with the Stableford Medley.

The ‘Winter 3’s’ competition continues strongly. The week 5 winner was Jeff Haley with an honest 30.5 25 nett. Others to collect a ball were P Kay (31), R Taylor (33) and A Tucker (33.5).

Upcoming competitions include the Sand/Grass Green Championships, being held at Grenfell and Forbes Golf Courses on 19/20 August. Nominations are now open. Groups can register together to take advantage of the ‘4 for 3’ package to enter four names and only pay for three. A dinner is available at the Grenfell Club on Saturday, with presentations at Forbes on Sunday. More information is available on the Go to the Golf NSW website.

Also on the horizon are the Lachlan Val- ley DGA Mixed 4-Ball, scheduled for Sun- day July 23 at Parkes, and the Mens 4-Ball vs Par, set for Sun 6 August at West Wyalong. After the success of our Mixed Foursomes, there should be a few good pairings attending at Parkes.

Bowls Round Up

June 29, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Indoor bowls

Every Monday from 6pm a group of happy players get together to enjoy a friendly game of indoor bowls. Their love of the game and a good laugh helps them face the cold night air in these winter months.

Last Monday, there were peals of laughter from the outset, when Squirt (John Read) turned up with tickets on himself. He has since been reminded to take the tags off his new shirts!

Everyone is welcome to join the group at the Forbes Bowling and Sports Club. Just come along any Monday night from 6pm to have a go.

Ladies bowls

In the ladies competition last week, Alison Cutcliffe and Hazel Prince faced Glenys Ryan and Loris Stewart in the final of the Club Minor Pairs. Both teams were new to the competition and impressed everyone with their skills. Playing 18 ends is chal- lenging, and requires intense concentration throughout the game. In the end, Hazel and Alison won 23-10. Congratulations to both teams for a great effort.

Forbes Netball At State Champs

June 22, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Forbes Netball Association representative 17U team played in the State Championships in Sydney over the long weekend.

The team won three games, had one draw and played 19 over three days to end 17th overall in one of the hallmark events of the NNSW calendar.

“The girls played great and really came together when it counted,” said coach Kristin Read. She said the team had been training hard starting at the end of last year. They played at four regional training carnivals in Orange, Dubbo, Cowra and in Forbes winning their division.

The Forbes Netball Association repre- sentative 17U team of 10 players are: Alyssa Godden (captain), Jessica Priest (vice captain), Sophie Cowan, Hannah Cudaj, Claire Maslin, Sarah O’Neil, Kate Hanley, Pypah Montgomery, Tanika Hill and Brooke Toole.

It was the 49th year of the NNSW State Championships with 69 associations from across NSW represented by 103 teams in six divisions.

Kristin thanked the parents, State Cham- pionships rep convenor – Melissa Cowan, manager – Kerrie Priest, primary carer – Sondra Godden, scorer – Coral O’Neil, bus driver – Gavin Montgomery, umpires – Jack Piercy and Leisa Kenny. Sponsors – Bunnings and MBR Clothing.
