Paul Kay Leads The Field

Last Saturday’s Individual Stableford was won by Paul Kay in the A-division with the Wilf Hodges Memorial Trophy up for grabs.

Paul was very focused to record 42 points, which earned him the trophy. Run- ner-up was Tim West, who had a disaster on the 2nd hole, but managed to score points on every hole thereafter, finishing with 39 points. The B-division saw Milton Cartwright take the honours with 39 points. Only two points back was Gus Coles with 37.

The ball sweep went to 35 pts on count back: 42 – Paul Kay; 39 – M Cartwright, Tim West, Tony Cogswell; 38 – J Betland; 37 – Andy Cogswell, R Borger, Gus Coles; 36 – F Hanns, M Haley, B Collie, B Shine, M Watts, A Alley, 35 – P Dawson, P Barnes, R Webb and P Tisdell. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Dawson, 18th – D Churchill.

The field for Sunday’s Stableford Medley was small, and the scores low. The winner was Ethel Coombs with 34 points, win- ning on count back from Bruce Carpenter. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Kirkman, 18th – Ray Taylor.

A large group of Forbes players attended the West Wyalong Open on Sunday with Steve Betland the eventual winner, scoring 74 scratch to finish one better than a local player. The Forbes guys also picked up an NTP and a handicap award.

Fantastic Finish For Betland In Forbes Open

It took a play-off between two top players to decide the winner of the 2017 Forbes Open.

The Forbes Open, jointly sponsored by the Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel and Daniel Newton On-Par Golf, attracted many top line golfers with the opportunity to qualify for the GolfNSW Open as the event is a regional qualifying event.

The place in the GolfNSW Senior Open was won by Rob Martin from Lakelands with a par round of 72. The spot for a play- er and two friends to play in the NSW Open Pro-Am was won by local stalwart Peter Cowhan with the best nett score of the day of 68.

Nearly half the field of 114 comprised A-graders (of whom 12 were on zero or lower) with many of those travelling from Orange, Sydney, Narrabri, Newcastle and the Hunter, Nelson Bay, Condobolin, Canberra, West Wyalong, Young and Southern Queensland.

The main winners included many Forbes players: A-Grade scratch John Betland 70; B-Grade scratch Peter Cowhan 82; C-Grade scratch Ron Morris 96; A-Grade handicap winner Dan Bayley (69); B-Grade handicap winner Will Hurley, Condobolin (72 on c/b); C-Grade handicap winner Anthony Alley (74); Veteran handicap winner Mark Collis (71); Junior handicap winner Cameron McMillan (73); Visitor handicap winner Josh Gadd, Concord (73).

70 Players In Monthly Medal

The Monthly Medal 18-hole stroke sponsored by Luke Hurford Painting was con- tested by 70 players last Saturday.

Visitor Daryl ‘Digit’ McAuliffee won the A- grade with a nett 70. Only two shots behind was Tim West, who got the runner-up prize on countback from a group of four others. He also got the medal for the best Forbes golfer.

The B-grade went to Warwick Judge, who compiled a tidy 69 nett. Finishing in second spot was Paul Kay, with 70 nett. The C- grade was a family affair. Don Ridley took the honours with 70 nett, ahead of John Ridley with his 73 nett.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, going to: 69 – W Judge; 70 – D McAu- liffe, D Ridley, P Kay; 71 – D Rhodes; 72 – T West, J Betland, P Dawson, T Callaghan, T Cogswell, B Everest; 73 – M Collits, S Betland, J Ridley, S Kirkman, B Collie, C Dwyer, B Shine and M Haley. The NTP’s went to: 9th – M Collits; 18th – S Betland.

Unfortunately Ray Taylor’s game was ruined early in his round. His 9 on the 4th hole comprised a few trips to the water, a bung chip and an errant putter. Thankfully his driving was okay – driving of his cart that is.

A group of golfers ventured to the Young Open on Sunday. Our boys did not fare too well, however Dan Bayley got the NTP on the 5th, only to have his prize stolen by Kim Herbert.

Tomorrow is the 4BBB, sponsored by Forbes Livestock Agency, and on Sunday is the Forbes Open, sponsored by Golfie Hotel and Dan Newton Pro-Par Golf.

The Legends Pro-Am is on Friday, 19th May. Ladies, men and juniors are encouraged to participate with some legends pro- fessional golfers. We still need as many club players as we can.

A Winter Three’s competition will com- mence on 22nd May and run to 28th August. Pick up a team nomination form from the Pro Shop. The Wallace Cup will start soon, ensure you have your name there.

Winners Aplenty For Forbes


Local golfers took out many prizes at the Lachlan Valley District Golf Association Championships and Pennants held in Forbes on Sunday.

Peter Dawson won the Moulder Cup with a score of 69, closely followed by John Bet- land on 70. Forbes also won the A division, B division and handicap pennants.

The field of 97 also came from Parkes, Grenfell, West Wyalong, Condobolin and Caragabal. Trundle, Bogan Gate and Peak Hill were unable to send players.

Other Forbes prize winners were: C divi- sion scratch champ to T Sharpe (82), with runner-up S French (89). Steve Uphill was runner-up in the B division scratch. Veterans handicap winner was A Rees (71), A grade handicap winner was D Mylecharane (71), A grade runner-up was A Dukes (72), B grade handicap winner was L O’Connor (71) from tunner-up P Barnes (74).

Justin Sutton from Parkes won the Cham- pion of Current Champions with a par score of 72.

On Saturday a field of 33 pairs played the 4BBB Stableford Medley event for the prestigious Hawke Trophy.

The winners were Rod Besgrove and Barb Drabsch, scoring 47 points. Runners-up, on count back, were Lee Grierson and Craig Simmons.

The ball sweep went to 44 points on count back, going to those above plus: 36 – S French/ T Cogswell, Richard/ Fran Smith, K Sly/ C Jarvis, B Slack-Smith/ H Steel-Park;

45 – G Collitts/ K Sanderson, D Ridley/ G Johnston; 44 – T Morgan/ A McDonald.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Chandler; 18th – B Chandler. Some delightful chip-ins were Deb Tilley on the 13th (for a 4-pointer!) and Terry Griffiths on the 18th.

Players are reminded the proposed changes to rules do not take effect until 1st January 2019. Current rules are valid for all official competitions – no leaving the pin in while putting! Players will be penalised for using the rules incorrectly.

Golf In Great Weather

The Easter weekend was full of golf, played in great weather conditions.

Saturday’s Individual Stableford was won by Rob Webb in the A-division. He scored 43 points in a roller-coaster ride. Runner-up was Ray Taylor with 42 points showing con- sistency throughout.

In the B-division, Paul Kay steadily im- proved to score 36 points. Runner-up was Troy Howe who had good and bad patches to score 35 points.

The ball sweep went to 36 points on count back, going to those above plus: 39 – D Bayley, K Herbert, T Griffiths, P Dawson, J Haley; 38 – N McMillan, M Haley; 37 – S Hailstone, S Uphill; 72 – K Sanderson.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – K Herbert; 18th – B Parker.

On Easter Friday the golfers played a Sta- bleford Medley. A small field played well, with Martin Woods taking the honours on 40 points and Shane Sallaway runner-up on 35 points. There was no ball sweep, but NTP’s went to – 9th: D Churchill and 18th: S Sallaway.

Easter Sunday was also a Stableford Medley, won by Jill Cripps with 38 points. Runner-up was Bruce Carpenter on 37 points on count back. The ball sweep went to 37, with R Morris and R Cross (Wyong) collecting a ball. NTP’s – 9th: Sue Cross; 18th: nobody.

Easter Monday had a Stableford Medley won by Dave Mylecharane on 42 points. Runner-up Andrew Dukes scored 40 points, which included three birdies and an eagle to finish 1-under the card.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Dawson; 18th – B Drabsch. The ball sweep went to 35 points, going to those above plus: 38 – T West; 37 – P Dawson, G West, M Cahill; 36–RBaker,BEverest;35–GDrane,M Browne.

Important dates

The Lachlan Valley District Men’s Pennants and Championships is on Sunday.

The Vets ‘Week of Golf’ runs from 8th to 12th May. Nominations must be in now.

The Forbes Open will be on 14th May, and 13th May will be a 4BBB.

On Friday, 19th May is the Legends Pro- Am. Ladies, men and juniors are encour- aged to participate alongside Legends pro- fessional golfers.

Remember to keep our course good by re- pairing pitch marks on the greens, filling in your divots and keeping your carts away from the greens. We want Forbes course to be at its best for the Open.

Successful Golf In Mixed Conditions

Last Saturday’s Men’s Monthly Medal saw a solid field competing enjoying balmy weather conditions.

The A-grade winner was Tim West with 68 nett. Runner-up was Andrew Grieson with 70 nett. The B-grade was won by Neil Duncan, with 71 nett, and runner-up Michael Spice with his 74 nett.

The C-grade was won by Ross Williams with a powerful 68 nett. Runner-up was Steve Grallelis, with 72 nett. The NTP’s went to: 9th – R Nixon; 18th – B Parker.

The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back, going to: 68 – R Williams, T West; 70 – A Grierson; 71 – Niel Duncan; 72 – B Shine, S Grallelis; 73 – A Alley, B Squires; 74 – M Spice, R Taylor, B Carpenter, L O’Connor and S Betland.

On Sunday the Grand Final of the ASI- sponsored Sixes Summer competition was played. Conditions were not summery, with some heavy storms before play and strong, cold winds during the afternoon.

The overall winners were Forbes Toyota, with a score of 114. Runners-up were Boys & Girls on 118.5. Equal third were F-Troop and Kool Kats, both on 123. The scores were not scorchers, but good efforts in try- ing conditions.

The best net score of the day went to Jake Hanley of Forbes Toyota with 35.5. He was blessed with a bit of luck, but also had strong game to contend against the wind.

The presentation prize night and dinner was held upstairs in the Golfie, and en- joyed by over 100 players and guests. The sponsors, Jeff and Vanessa Herdigan of ASI Capital, were thrilled with the partici- pation by social and serious golfers alike. They also affirmed their sponsorship for next year’s competition.

There were a number of prizes handed out across a range of categories including – Weekly Winners, Most Games Played, Most Team Points, and more.

It was a fun night rounding off a fun sum- mer competition.
