May 25, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Fiona Hayward of Eyewear Specs says having regular eye checks is the most important thing you can do to take care of your eyes.

Word of mouth has seen Fiona’s business grow since she opened the shop at 95 Rankin Street last year, and she is celebrating with a special offer for the Forbes community.

Each month, the person whose photo has the most likes will receive a $100 voucher. At the end of the year, all names will go into the draw to win an iPad mini.

If you’ve noticed any changes in your eyes, Fiona says it’s important to have them checked as soon as possible.

Tips To Survive Winter On A Budget

April 27, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

After such a hot summer it is hard to imagine feeling cold again, but as the weather starts to change, you will start feeling the chill of winter.

Here are seven tips to keep you warm this winter, without blowing your budget on heating bills.

1. BE STRATEGIC ABOUT WINDOWS AND CURTAINS
What time of day does the sun shine through your windows? When it does, open your curtains to soak up the heat. Once the sun’s gone, close them up to keep out the winter chill.

2. BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR HEATER
If you have heaters installed at your place, make sure they’re working correctly and that nothing is sitting in front of or on top of them. If you’re renting and the installed heaters aren’t working, remember that your landlord has a responsibility to make sure that they are. You should also find out if you have a gas or electric heater and then check if you’re getting a good deal from your energy supplier. The Australian Energy Regulator has some great online tools to help you com- pare the prices of different energy offers. If you plan on buying a heater, do some research.

3. SHUT UP UNUSED ROOMS

Keep the heat where you need it most by always shutting the doors on any rooms you’re not using, especially when you have the heater running.

4. GET DOOR DRAUGHT BLOCKERS

Cold air often creeps in underneath doors. Snake draught stoppers are a budget way of keeping out a lot of cold air. You can even make one yourself.

5. STAY WARM WHILE YOU SIT

You’re most likely to want to turn the heater up when you’re sitting still because your body temperature will naturally start to drop. Use a hot water bottle, blanket or beanie baby to prevent being tempted to turn the heater on while you’re lounging around.

6. COVER BARE FLOORS

Place rugs and mats on top of any bare floors to stop chill from rising.

7. SHOP SMART FOR WINTER CLOTHES
Don’t waste your budget – always read the labels when you shop for winter clothes. Avoid cotton and look for polyester (es- pecially polyester polar fleece), wool and things with down filling. Nylon is particular- ly good for windproof outer layers. There’s also no harm in getting some thermal un- derwear, for those extra chilly days.

Stay warm this winter and remember… there’s always an Aussie Summer waiting around the corner!

Aussie Women Put Foundation Before Friends

March 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Many Australian women would ditch their friends or risk their credit rating rather than go make-up free, according to new research. The research commissioned by leading online Australian beauty and haircare retailer RY.com.au, reveals the extremes to which Aussie women will go in the name of beauty.

It found 46 per cent of respondents would rather cancel a dinner with friends or scrimp on the weekly food shop if they needed the money to replace their foundation.

An even more hardcore bunch, 12 per cent of those surveyed, were prepared to borrow money, skip paying a phone bill or even overdraw their bank account rather than be forced to go foundation free.

RY.com.au co-founder James Patten said the research uncovered the extent of Australian women’s love affair with their beauty products.

“It has echoes of the so-called lipstick effect, which suggests that consumers will still buy luxury goods even when facing a crisis,” he said.

RY.com.au’s research also provides clues as to which age-groups are more likely to indulge in this make-up mania, with women aged under 35 leading the pack on how much they spend each month on skin, hair and beauty treatments.

A quarter of women aged under 35 spend more than $150 a month on treatments compared to just seven per cent of those aged over 55. The younger demographic was almost twice as likely to splurge on beauty products when they felt down or stressed.

And it was the youngest women surveyed who are reaching for top shelf items; with women aged under 25 the most likely to buy top-of-the-range expensive products, perhaps overdrawing their bank accounts in the process.

Ten Tips For a Happier, Healthier Life

March 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

1. Eat primally: Common sense dictates that the best diet is one based on foods we’ve been eating the longest. Studies show that a diet made up of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, as well as meat, fish and eggs, is best for weight control and health.

2. Keep hydrated: Water makes up two- thirds of the body and performs a plethora of functions, including acting as a solvent, carrier of nutrients, temperature regulator and body detoxifier. Drink enough to keep your urine a pale yellow colour.

3. Eat mindfully: In our fast-paced world, we often eat while distracted and shovel in more than we need. Avoid eating when dis- tracted, eating more slowly and taking time to taste food properly. Also chewing thoroughly – not only will it help to savour food, but it also assists the digestive process.

4. Get plenty of sunlight in the summer…:Sunlight, and the vitamin D this can make in the skin, is associated with a wide spectrum of benefits. As a rule of thumb, vitamin D is made when our shadow is shorter than our body length, ie when the sun is high in the sky. While burning is to be avoided, get as much sunlight exposure as possible for op- timal health.

5… and in the winter: Low levels of sunlight in the winter can cause dark moods. It pays to get some external light exposure in the winter, say during lunchtime.

6. Get enough sleep: Sleep has the abil- ity to optimise mental and physical energy. About eight hours a night are linked with reduced risk of chronic disease and improved longevity. Shutting down the computer or turning off the TV early in the evening is often all it takes to get to bed earlier.

7. Walk regularly: Aerobic exercise, including walking, is associated with a vari- ety of benefits for the body and the brain. Aim for a total 30 minutes of brisk walking every day.

8. Engage in some resistance exercise: Resistance exercise helps to maintain muscle mass and strengthens the body. Do exercises at home, such as press-ups, sit-ups and squats.

9. Practise random acts of kindness: It is good for givers and receivers alike. It could be a quick call or text to someone, showing a fellow motorist some consideration, buy- ing someone lunch or giving a spontaneous bunch of flowers.

10. Practise the art of appreciation: It is easy to fall in the modern-day living trap of acquiring material. Spend more time focusing not on what we don’t have, but on what we do, and give thanks for anything from our friends and family to a beautiful land- scape or sunset.

End Summer With A Feast

February 23, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

February may be coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of time to make some magical summer food.

From the veggies you can pick up at a farmer’s market or in a shop ― such as zucchini, eggplant and basil — to the sweet summer fruits and berries that are still hanging around, you’ve still got plenty of options. And of course, the weather’s still warm enough to fire up your barbeque.

Here are some ideas to make before the summer ends. Why not invite your friends over to celebrate summer with the best seasonal food on offer.

Just Google these ideas to find recipes where needed.

If you have basil growing in your garden, try making pesto.

What about making a buttermilk blueberry pie or peach donut cupcakes for dessert?

With Summer vegies you can make zuc- chini pancakes, sweet corn polenta with eggplant sauce, grilled sourdough with herbs, tomatoes and honey drizzle or mac and cheese stuffed fried zucchini, Round it off with that all time favourite strawberries and ice cream or peanut butter and jam ice cream sandwiches.

For your next breakfast try to make fried egg BLT, and for the kids make raspberry and white cherry yogurt pops or pineapple mint popsicles.

Salads are a great summer food to enjoy – what about an avocado, onion and toma- to salad or a lemony roasted potato salad. Be more adventurous and try a grilled egg-

plant and zucchini salad with feta, chickpeas and mint or grilled watermelon salad!

Keen on a burger – try a grilled beef and mushroom burger and fried green toma- toes… While you are busy on the grill, try grilled halloumi and peaches with dukkah.

Last but not least celebrate summer with a colourful fruit salad with all your favourite fruits in it.

Bon Appetit!

Keeping Resolutions Is Achievable

January 25, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

If you love food, here’s a little guide to shaping up, minus the dieting.

  • Make friends with food: Think healthy, moderate eating!
  • Make your own food: Know your ingredients and influence what ends up on your plate.
  • Focus on the experience: If you enjoy what you eat, you’re less likely to fall into the restrict and binge cycle.
  • Reinvent your favourite naughty dishes: If you like ice cream, try making it with coconut milk and stevia instead.
  • Keep it social: Invite your friends to bring a dish.

If you are struggling to stick to your resolutions – try these tips:

• Make one change at a time.

• Break it up into smaller goals.

• Lift your Spirits.

• Give your willpower some wiggle room: avoid making 100% resolutions.

• Write down things you’re proud of, right down to ‘I get out of bed when I don’t want to.’

• Draw on the strength of images: put up a photo of a thinner you on the fridge, or a picture of a Caribbean beach in your wallet to remind yourself of the holiday you’re saving for.

Vital Support On Offer Over Festive Period

December 22, 2016 by Maggi Barnard

download-1

With the final week of 2016 upon us, it’s a time to reflect, but for some this time of year is challenging. Fortunately, many online and phone services, like headspace and Cancer Council will remain open this festive season. The holiday season can pose many challenges for people affected by cancer. The new Cancer Council Online Community provides the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and find information and support in a safe forum. It’s available 24/7 from any online device, regardless of location.

Cancer Council NSW’s Lead Supportive Care Manager, Hannah Baird said the online community aimed to reduce isolation by encouraging people to share their stories with others in similar situations. “What we are seeing through our peer support programs is more and more people are turning to digital platforms for information and support, to connect with others who can relate to what they are experiencing.”
The Cancer Council 13 11 20 telephone information and support service is available over the holiday period. For more
information visit: www.cancercouncil.com.au/OC

The beginning of a new year can also be a turbulent time for many young people. They may be facing some big life changes like starting a new school, awaiting exam results to get into higher education, or commencing employment. When normal routines change and daily structure is altered it can cause pressure. During these times, it is valuable for families and friends to be aware of signs and symptoms that something might be wrong with their loved ones. Being withdrawn, expressing ongoing worry, or irritability are just a few changes to look out for.

If you need support or advice, headspace can help. The National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace, provides support to young people aged 12-25 years who are going through a tough time. This includes support for mental health, physical health, work and study, or alcohol and other drugs. It is also open to parents. Visit headspace.org.au or access help via eheadspace.org.au for online and telephone
support between 9am-1am seven days-a-week.
