What are some ways you can support drought stricken communities?

February 7, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Andrew and Virginia Rice visited Forbes, from Parkes, to attend the ‘We’re Still Here’ Tour.

Andrew Rice: Generally supporting community events, not everything needs to be free. It is a good idea to have a variety of options for people, but we are happy to pay modest fees for events like this (Tom Curtain tour).

Virginia Rice: Having new events brought in and giving people the opportunity to travel and attend various shows, concerts, festivals brings a significant amount to rural economies when they spend on food, tickets, accommodation etc.

Leonie Miles: Give more support in helping. Being on the farm in floods it meant a lot when people offer to help mend fences or look after the cows or even having someone to talk to.Help doesn’t always have to involve money.

What does being Australian mean to you?

January 31, 2020 by Maggi Barnard

Julie Kearney: Safety. We are safe from the rest of the world.

Glen Kearney: It means everything to me, I’m proud to be Australian.

Dan Wright: The great part of being Australian is that my family and I are safe wherever we go. We have so many opportunities and experiences at our fingertips.

What is your new year’s resolution?

Jacinta Slaven: I don’t have one because I’m perfect.

Daryl Mowbray: To go on a big overseas trip.

Graeme Mowbray: I don’t have one.

What are your thoughts about the planned upgrades to public areas around the Lake Forbes?

Steven Jarick: I reckon they’re great. What Council has done around the lake is brilliant, the cricket fence and the lights.

Andrew Barrass: It’s fantastic, we were at the opening of the pontoon and it’s just fantastic, the changes being made.

Jill Rubie: It’s all very beautiful, I just wonder if we needed that many lights and if the money could have been spent elsewhere.

How is Forbes different from other places you have lived?

Cheryl McDonnell: This is the friendliest place in Australia, and I’ve travelled around Australia four times. The people here are friendly, warm and authentic.

Alison Lockheart: It’s hotter, a lot hotter and the people are very friendly.

Rebekah McCloud: The community is so welcoming.

Question of the week

What are some ways we can help those in need in the lead up to Christmas?

Isabel Haley: Invite them for a meal, shout them or have them over.
Jodi Williams: Help out with essentials by gifting a hamper.

Charlie Foster: It is important for those in need to feel acknowledged and accepted, there are lots of people in need and they should feel that they are part of the Forbes community too. Acknowledging them and accepting them through community events also gives those in need emotional support and encouragement, which is important.
