Our Gal – Donna Cain

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? We have been in Forbes for 11 and a half years now. I like the small, quiet, country town.

What was your first job? I was working as a legionnaires and water tester, a long time ago.

What makes you laugh the most? My kids.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? Spend every day like it was an adventure.

Describe your dream holiday? A nice long road trip all around Australia, stopping any and everywhere.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Hanging out with my cousins on the farm.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I would still live in Australia, but in the early colonial days. I would like to see it for myself.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My Father, my Grandmother and Great Grandmother West.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I am a born and bred Forbian. I love the river and country living lifestyle.

What was your first job? I was a paperboy with Nock’s Newsagency when I was 10 years old.

What makes you laugh the most? Good humour and my own jokes.

If money was no object, what would you do with your time? I’d camp, hunt, fish and travel.

Describe your dream holiday? The Maldives for sure.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? World Expo in Brisbane, 1988.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I’d live in the 1930’s, the mafia and gangster world back then.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My dad, my mum and my son Beau.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? We moved here in 2016, into our fifth year in Forbes now. I love the lake, the family-oriented culture and small-town community.

What was your first job? I’m a chef by trade and worked in hospitality since leaving school, spending 10 years in the industry.

What makes you laugh the most? My own personal jokes, I laugh at myself a fair bit. My boys’ sense of humour makes me laugh and so does being with friends.

If money was no object, what would you do with your time? I’d probably travel the world.

Describe your dream holiday? The one I just had. I went to Prague, Dresden, Berlin as well as a friend’s wedding in Ireland. I enjoyed catching up with friends, eating great food, shopping and sightseeing.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Family camping trips in the camper trailer, bonnet surfing on an old car, going to youth group and being silly with friends.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I think God has got me right where he wants me right now, so I am happy to be where I am.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? Jesus, Bono from U2 and my husband.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? Lived here for 40 years, more or less. I came out from Scotland in 1980. To begin with, I like farming and the town of Forbes with the lake is beautiful.

What was your first job? I was brought up on a farm in Scotland and worked on that farm in my teens with my father and brother until I bought my own farm.

What makes you laugh the most? Some things that I see on television makes me laugh but they aren’t supposed to be funny.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? Well I’ve got no wish to go on a cruise ship. If I could make everything could go back to normal for everyone I’d be happy.

Describe your dream holiday? I’ve been back to Scotland a fair few times and I love going back there.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Playing in the snow with my friends. We made our own fun back then.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I enjoyed my teens thoroughly, so throughout the 50s in Scotland.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? Winston Churchill, to pick his brains, Scott Morrison and Neil Armstrong.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? Nearly two years, I like babies in Forbes because they’re so cute.

What Year are you in? I’m in 1A and I go to Forbes Public.

What makes you laugh the most? Tickling.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A babysitter and a hairdresser.

Describe your dream holiday? Going to the beach.

What is your favourite game? Playing with baby sisters.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? At home, now.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? Layla, Bedelia and Ellie.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes for four years. I love the weather and the people. The community is active and there is usually so many events.

What was your first job? My first job was working in a cotton mill in Scotland.

What makes you laugh the most? People with a good sense of humour. The blokes I work with make me laugh constantly. I’m lucky.

If money was no object, what would you do with your time? If money were no object, I would take a trip around Australia.

Describe your dream holiday? My dream holiday would be to go on the Kidney rally.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Holidays with Mum and Dad to the seaside in England.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I think the 50’s and 60’s in Scotland.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? I would love to share a meal with Mum and Dad and my best mate Jeff Taylor.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I was born and raised in Forbes and came back to live after 31 years away. I love the beauty of Forbes and the people.

What was your first job? I worked in the old Hawkes Radio and Electrix store.

What makes you laugh the most? The Coronavirus fear mongering and toilet paper “crisis”.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I would have a kangaroo sanctuary and organic farm.

Describe your dream holiday? My bucket list dream is to cruise Alaska and see the Northern Borealis.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Being with my grandfather Teddy Tanks on our many adventures.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? Paris, 1955.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My Grandmother, Ida Tanks, my Grandfather and my dear friend Vicky Wilson.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? Eight years. I like the friendly people, great lifestyle and lack of traffic.

What was your first job? I worked as a Product Specialist for a nutrition company

What makes you laugh the most? The TV series Frasier.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I’d be doing exactly the same as I am doing now.

Describe your dream holiday? Brunswick Heads, playing with my kids at the beach and relaxing.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Celebrating Divali, the Indian Festival of lights, with my family by setting off fireworks.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I would be right here, right now.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My mum, dad and sister, they live in India and I don’t often get to see them.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? About two and a half years in Forbes and I love the lake, It is the best part of Forbes.

What was you first job? I was a receptionist in Sri Lanka at a clothing company.

What makes you laugh the most? Friends.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I’d definitely go to Paris and England. I want to go and see the sights and eat good food.

Describe your dream holiday? Walking the cobblestoned streets of Paris, window shopping in narrow streets lined with beautiful old buildings.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Climbing the wall to play with the kids next door in their treehouse. I remember my mum took me to the police station to try and scare me into not climbing the wall in between our neighbours’ yard.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I really enjoy being in Forbes but I’d love to be in Sri Lanka when I was young again, although I don’t miss how strict my parents were then.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My Mum, Dad and my childhood friend.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve been here for five years next month; I like that Forbes is a quiet little town with friendly people.

What was your first job? Butcher, I’ve been a butcher for most of my life.

What makes you laugh the most? Oh gee, hearing a good joke, or a dirty joke.

If money were no object, what would you do with your time? I think I’d party hard.

Describe your dream holiday? Sitting back on the beach in Hawaii, drinking out of a coconut with an umbrella in it and wearing a pair of Manly footie shorts.

What is a favourite childhood memory of yours? Meeting the Manly football team after they won the grand final in 1987.

If you could live in any time or place, where and when would that be? I’d probably go back to Broken Hill in the 1970’s and early 80’s. I did my schooling out there and it’s a good place. I’d also go to Wilcannia where my Pop had a property and I’d swim in the (Darwin) river.

If you could share a meal with any three people, past or present, who would they be? My dad, my uncle and my nan, they’ve all passed, and I miss them.
