Flannery’s Pharmacy

July 27, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Parent’s Room
Flannery’s Pharmacy is now proud to offer a dedicated Parent’s Room to the Forbes Community. The parent’s room was included in the design for the newly refurbished pharmacy following the identification of a need for such a service in the central shopping area that provides a private area for feeding and changing as well as a toddler play area.

Given that we live in a rural community and a large number of our customers travel from properties or smaller communities outside of Forbes, we felt this was an important service we could offer our customers. As well as offering parents a private room for feeding and nappy change, the room also boasts baby weigh scales and length measure with these measurements able to be recorded at the pharmacy as part of the pharmacy guildcare program, and compiled into an easy to read printout on request.

We would love to invite all new and expectant parents to call into the pharmacy to collect a free bounty bag which contains samples and lots of great information. In addition to our friendly retail staff, Flannery’s Pharmacy has experienced Pharmacists and a Registered Nurse
available to answer any of your questions or concerns regarding baby and children’s health.

Flannery’s Pharmacy has been serving the Forbes community for nearly 60 years. Our aim is to provide excellent customer service, professional support and advice to our community through an enthusiastic, caring and knowledgeable team.

Holly Bradford is an award-winning photographer who loves being part of her client’s special day as there are so many beautiful moments for her to capture! Be it the proud look on a father’s face, the nervous but excited anticipation of the groom, the cheeky flower girl or of course the joy of a couple who are deeply in love.

These are the important moments that tell the story of a wedding day and you want to have full trust in your photographer that they will capture the memories for you. Holly is all about giving her clients confidence to relax, have fun and enjoy every minute!

Throughout the day she aims to be as unobtrusive as possible during the important moments like the ceremony and speeches as there is nothing worse than a photographer who steals the focus. She also likes to have a bit of fun with her bridal parties and often asks lots of silly questions, as the best images are often captured when you’re having a good old laugh!

Although based in the country town of Young in NSW, Holly regularly travels for weddings and has even gone as far as the Kimberley, Fiji and Ireland! Holly takes a great deal of pride and care in her work and after the wedding spends on average 40 plus hours editing behind
the scenes to ensure her clients receive the highest level of quality in their final images.

Once the wedding is complete the bride and groom are invited to come into her lovely studio in Young and view all the images on
the big screen while enjoying some bubbly and sweet treats. She also has a range of professional products and clients have the option to
turn their images into either gorgeous canvases, beautiful prints for the wall or stunning custom designed wedding albums.

Playing Safe With Our Kids

July 20, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Around Australia, about 20 per cent of onfarm injury fatalities are to children under 15 years of age. There are many more injuries to children each year, some with lifelong consequences. The biggest risk is drowning, especially for children under five years old. Other major dangers include machinery and vehicles, particularly quad bikes.

National Farm Safety week runs from 17 to 23 July, and chairman of Farmsafe Australia, Charles Amstrong, is encouraging people on properties to take extra care, especially with kids. “Too many children are injured, or worse, killed on our farms each year,” said Charles.
“We recommend all farms have a secure safe play area for children under 5 years. Whether you are parents of young children, a grandparent, or simply have kids visiting on your property every now and then, a secure play area is a must.

“As an industry, we have reduced the number of farm injury deaths by almost 60% over the past two decades, but we need to do more,” he said. He adds that there are two things people can do right now to provide a safer environment for children who live on or visit their property. “Make sure you have a secure safe play area and not to allow children on quad bikes. In 2016, three children were killed
riding quads. The risk is not worth it. Kids don’t have the physical size, strength, coordination and emotional maturity to safely operate such a dangerous piece of equipment.

“It’s not about wrapping them up in cotton wool, it is about taking sensible steps to reduce the chance of things going wrong”. Further information can be found at: www.farmsafe.org.au or by contacting Farmsafe Australia on (02) 6269 5622 or your state Farmsafe group.

Guy’s Superpower? Carbon-hungry Fungi!

July 20, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

When you have an idea worth spreading, the chance to pitch it at a TED conference is a dream come true. This is just what happened to Forbes agronomist, Guy Webb. Guy was one of 6 people selected from 100 applicants to pitch a 30 second “fast idea” at the 2017 TEDx Sydney conference in June.

As co-founder of not-for profit organisation Soil C Quest 2031, Guy took the opportunity to pitch their major idea, which is to develop a way to use “carbon capturing fungi” to take carbon dioxide from the air and store it in soil. Farmers would then become “carbon saving superheroes” in the fight to reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

Guy made his 30 second pitch to thousands, including a live audience and viewers watching via the live simulcast and at satellite events around Australia. Guy’s presentation captivated everyone, and he was voted the winner with thunderous applause. “This is an exciting and timely opportunity for the Soil C Quest project, with support being offered to the project from TEDx through Change.Org, a major marketing organisation.”

“The project still has a long way to go though and we are commencing a crowd funding campaign in October to enable us to raise funds to undertake the research and development required,” said Guy. To find out more about the project and how to support it, visit the website at scq.net.au or find them on Facebook or Twitter.

A Year In Country Practice For Medical Students

July 20, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Forbes Medical Centre has welcomed three new medical students to their practice. Bradley Spackman, Laura Sunderland and Charne Quayle started their 12-month placement last Monday. The third-year medical students from the University of Wollongong (UOW) are here as part of a five-year partnership between the UOW and the Forbes Medical Centre.

“This is the fourth year of our agreement with UOW. Due to the success of our teaching program and the positive feedback from students
placed at our practice, we now have three students undertaking their placement with us each year,” said Dr Neale Somes. Brad and Laura were drawn to medicine by a desire to combine their interests in science and helping others, and are excited to be here.

“Past practical placements have been in acute settings, where we only tend to see patients once. It will be great to get to know patients over the next 12 months as we work with their regular doctors,” said Laura. During their placement in Forbes the students will spend time learning about general practice and working in the emergency department at the Forbes Hospital. They will also undertake placements in the community and with allied health professionals and visiting specialists.

“In the city medicine can be very specialised but here the students are exposed to general medicine, from the cradle to the grave, from obstetrics to palliative care and everything in between,” said Dr Somes. Dr Somes is hopeful that after spending a year in Forbes, the UOW students will be more likely to return to the country to work. “I’m optimistic that exposing students to the life of a rural generalist means they will be more likely to come back to the country to practice when they have completed their training,” he said.

Mayoral Notes…

The 70th Anniversary of the Rotary Changeover Dinner at Garema Hall was a great night on Saturday. The Garema Hall is looking fantastic and the work that has been done out there is a great credit to the community members involved. Next week Councillors Jenny Webb and Phyllis Miller, Director Engineering and Technical Services John Zannes, and myself will be attending the Australian Livestock Markets Association annual conference and annual general meeting in Rockhampton. This will be my last board meeting as the meeting dates clash with Centroc meetings.

On Saturday, I met the Deputy Premier John Barilaro when he visited Forbes. It was a great opportunity to discuss grant funding that may be available for Forbes to repair heritage buildings and infrastructure, especially old sporting infrastructure. The Mixed Bowls Competition held on Sunday was a great event with credit to the organising committee. The weather was beautiful and teams came from across the Central West, one team was even from the Philippines.

Yesterday was our July Council Meeting and I will report more on this next week. The Delivery Program was one of the items on the agenda and will be on display for comment if it was endorsed for public exhibition at the meeting.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Funding boost for Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Centre: Nationals’ MP and Minister for Small Business Mr McCormack said patients in Forbes will soon realise the benefits of improved facilities. The Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Centre in Forbes is one of 67 medical practices that were offered grants across the nation, with a total of $13.1 million allocated under the Government’s Rural General Practice Grants program. “This grant will provide assistance to the Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Centre to develop a holistic approach to Indigenous healthcare,” Mr McCormack said.

Forbes Lions Changeover: The Ninth Annual Changeover for the Forbes and District Lions Club was held at the Vandenberg Hotel last week. President Ray Judge was re inducted for his second term, and will be supported by a committee of experienced members. The Forbes Lions have had a successful and busy year. In addition to regular activities, members were involved in hosting the State Finals of the Youth of the Year Competition which brought visitors to town from all over the State; and were quick to respond during last year’s floods, setting up a Relief Office in the HACC centre to provide assistance to affected individuals. Ray presented Certificates of Appreciation to Peter Bright for his work with the Flood Relief Centre and State Youth of the Year Final, and to Neil Lambert for his work with the State Youth of the Year Final. Ray is happy to speak to anyone who would like to find out more about the Lions Club. He can be contacted on 02 6852 2143.

Why Are Minutes Of Your Meeting Essential?
The answer is that they are required by Section 50 the Associations Incorporation Act, 2009 and must be kept by the Secretary. Similarly, corporations are required to keep minutes of meetings too. Members may at all reasonable times inspect the minutes, although shareholders of corporations have only limited ability to view minutes of Directors’ meetings.

There are no absolute rules about how minutes of meetings should be set out, other than they need to be in English and be reasonably
understood. We suggest that minutes should include; a list of attendance, apologies, correspondence (including electronic) and a Treasurer’s report. The meeting date and location should be recorded, along with the meeting’s start and finish times.

Motions need to be accurately set out by the Secretary in the minutes and he or she should indicate if they were carried, lost, or amended and carried. The Chairperson might ask for a show of hands or may pass the motion on the voices. Too often the Chairperson fails to declare the motion as passed and that can lead to controversy. Some laws or rules require motions to have secret ballots, and these must be strictly observed.

There should always be a motion to confirm the previous minutes with or without amendments. The Chairperson should sign and date the minutes to certify they are correct. Circulating minutes via email eliminates the need to read out minutes at subsequent meetings, saving time.

All Chairpersons, the Executive, and members should read articles on the internet about meeting procedure. If you have questions on Minutes, Meeting Procedure or anything else, please contact any of our Solicitors at Matthews Williams.
