Grace And Charm

September 14, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Local woman, Grace Allen was sashed as the new Forbes Showgirl last Friday night. However, she hasn’t had time to bask in the splendour of winning the title. Instead, Grace is already back on duty fulfilling her role as a nurse in ICU at the Orange Hospital.

Grace was born and bred in Forbes and lived on their family property until she moved to Orange for work. Her goals for the future are to complete the Critical Care program through Orange Health. She is also looking forward to give it her all as the proud representative of Forbes at the zone judging held next February in Blayney.

Grace entered the Showgirl competition to ensure that the event would continue in future and that one day her children could have the same experiences as what she did at the shows.

Whilst representing Forbes as the Miss Showgirl, Grace is looking forward to promoting the show and getting everyone excited about the 2018 Forbes Show. She is also eager to meet up with the other Showgirl ambassadors at the etiquette course in January.

Are You Happy With The Rebate Your Health Fund Pays For Physio?

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Recent research by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) shows that many of the major Australian health funds have not substantially increased their rebate for seeing some physiotherapists in more than a decade. The APA has said that this is “inequitable and unfairly pressures patients into the health insurer’s selection of physiotherapist, despite choice being a core tenet of the Australian private health system.” Preferred provider schemes limit your freedom to choose the physiotherapist that is best able to treat their specific injury or condition.

The APA advises that when looking for a health fund that is right for you, you should look for one that not only meets your needs and provides good rebates for the services that you need but one that offers flexibility and allows you to see the physiotherapist that you want to see should you require their services.

The preferred provider schemes offered by health funds make no distinction between the level of experience or qualifications of your treating practitioner. The rebate you receive per consultation is the same whether you were treated by a new graduate on their  first day of work, or by someone like myself with an APA Sports Physio title, Masters degree and over 20 years of private practice experience. I am not part of any preferred provider scheme because I believe that, to achieve the best health outcomes, insurers should provide higher rebates for more experienced and qualified physiotherapists and they should allow you your choice of physiotherapist without you being financially disadvantaged. For the fitness of you.

Climate Change Driving Dangerous Bushfire Season Ahead

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The Climate Council is warning Australia’s 2017/18 bushfire season will be more severe and dangerous, as a result of worsening climate change, following the release of a new critical outlook this week. The Climate Council said the new Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC outlook is a smoke signal for yet another worrying bushfire season, highlighting a largely warm and dry winter that has set the scene for dangerous bushfire conditions over the coming months.

Climate Council CEO, Amanda McKenzie said the latest southern Australia bushfire outlook, released, shows an earlier and more active bushfire season should be expected. “Climate change is the driving force behind southern Australia’s worsening bushfire conditions,” she said.

“As Australia’s pollution levels continue to rise, many parts of the country are poised to live through another dangerous bushfire season. Climate change, driven by the burning of coal, oil and gas, is intensifying extreme weather events – and bushfires are no exception.”

“We must rapidly and deeply reduce our rising pollution levels and continue the retirement of all coal power stations, in a bid to protect Australians from these worsening extreme weather events.”

McKenzie urged the Federal Government to follow the actions of state and local governments across the country, by rolling out climate and energy policy to support the transition to Australia’s clean energy future.

“The link between worsening extreme weather events and climate change is clear. Australia must act now to slash its rising pollution levels through clean, affordable and secure renewable energy and storage technology.”

No Bar Too High For Forbes High School Athletes

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Two students from Forbes High School have leaped into the State Athletics Carnival to be held in Homebush this weekafter qualifying at the Western Combined High School Athletics carnival in Dubbo recently.

Year 8 student Tyrone Clothier and vice captain Elysse Girot-Serplet have qualified in high jump and long jump respectively.

Tyrone qualified first in high jump in his age division, while Elysse qualified second in long jump in her age division. This is a first for both students and a fantastic result for Forbes High School, which had eight students attend the Western CHS Athletics carnival in Dubbo this year.

Students were given an extra boost with the school being successful in obtaining a grant through Charles Sturt University’s Rural and Regional Sports Development Program.

The funding supported the cross country and athletic competitors with travel this year to Western and State competitions. With distance and travel a challenge for many students in regional, rural and remote schools, this funding has been immensely helpful to students and families in providing opportunities and helping to reduce travel costs for families and students attending these events.

“Having two students reach state level for athletics is a fantastic achievement for our students and our school. Tyrone and Elysse should be extremely proud of what they have achieved so far,” relieving Principal Jason Nottingham said.

A Taste Of The Best

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

The wine flowed at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre last Friday, as fans strolled around the room in search of the perfect glass of vino.

The NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show public tasting featured an outstanding selection of the award-winning wines as well as the other wines entered into the show for the crowd to enjoy, along with finger foods.

President of the Wine Show Mark Watts said: “We get around 120 people on the public tasting night and they get to try really good boutique type wines. Some of the wines here have won awards overseas.”

The Wine Show awarded 16 trophies, 25 gold medals, 56 silver medals and 142 bronze medals in this year’s competition. In an unprecedented event, Rosé has been the second biggest class this year and won the best boutique wine at the show.

The show still has three members on the committee that started it 26 years ago. The show was started in what is not a traditional wine making region.

“According to our head judge the show is held in Forbes because of passionate people that want to put on a wine show, it’s neutral ground and we have no problem getting top quality judges,” said Mark.

The show also introduced a new electronic system this year by receiving all entries online and the judging was done using iPads. This saved a lot of time by eliminating transposing of numbers and expediting the result calculation.

Forbes Factory Reps In Canberra

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

Disability enterprises working in the region are doing fantastic work for their employees and the wider community, said Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack.

He met with House With No Steps director Andrew Richardson and executive general manager Brett Lacey at Parliament House in Canberra this week. Andrew and Brett were at a BuyAbility  following the Disability Enterprise Summit, an event for National Disability Services members.

“It was great to meet up with them and talk about their Aussie Biscuits factory at Forbes,” said Michael. “I was in Forbes only last week to have a look at the factory, which will relocate to better premises thanks to a $210,000 Building Better Regions grant.”

Fabulous Forbes Showgirls

September 7, 2017 by Maggi Barnard

After careful consideration, the Forbes Showgirl 2017 winner will finally be announced and receive her prizes at tonight’s opening of the Forbes Show at 7pm. The winner to be sashed will move on to the zone judging held next February in Blayney.

The Showgirl finalists had the opportunity to impress three judges during a 20 to 25 minute interview last Saturday followed by a high tea with invited attendees at the Forbes Town Hall. During this the four finalists were also given an impromptu question proving each one to be deserving of the title.

Forbes Showgirl coordinator, Susan Earl said: “Our four entrants all have different stories and backgrounds. It’s a hard job for the judges to choose our Showgirl for this year. The whole competition is looking at someone to represent Forbes as our ambassador and to let other towns know about the wonderful things that Forbes has to offer.”

Attributes that are looked for in a potential Showgirl winner, aged 18 to 24 years, is confidence, interest in the rural scene and community. Key qualities also include someone that is well groomed and well presented.

Susan passionately believes that the competition is a great way for girls to gain confidence and get experience in being interviewed. It is also looked upon as an asset on the girl’s resume.

Amelia Sweeney, Showgirl for 2016 said: “I was really pleased with all the entries we received this year. It’s amazing we got these girls who are happy to represent Forbes and the Forbes Show society. All the girls had something different to offer. They are all really proud of who they are in their local community and they are all really excited to be involved.”

One of the three judges, Tom Dwyer commented on the high standard of this year’s finalists.
